Tournament: The Gish

Before I begin, some background for the uninitiated:

In PnP role-playing games, the "Gish"-type character has been a perennial favorite, at least as far back as the Elvish Fighter/Magic-User in 2nd Ed. D&D. This sort of character is typified as primarily a warrior of sorts who uses utility magic or buff magic to increase their (usually) melee fighting capabilities. In D2, there are many examples of single classes who are Gish "out of the box," so to speak: Assassins use Venom, BoS and Fade along with claw attacks and shadow magic; Paladins use potent auras, HS, and a variety of combat techniques.

The real kinds of Gish-y characters in D2 are the Enchantress and Melee Necro, and those are the sorts of characters I wish to model this tournament after. (If this is starting to sound familiar, there was a previous Tournament with similar intent, but our permitted skills differ greatly -- cf. http://www.purediablo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=658533.) Every class in D2 has the capability to be a Gish. The strict definition of a Gish in this sense is as follows: a Gish is a character who uses normal, unmodified melee attacks to kill enemies, and cannot use any skills that directly damage enemies or create summons whose sole purpose is to damage or tank enemies. To wit, here are the permitted skills for each class, by class:

Amazon
Bow and Crossbow Skills - None.
Passive and Magic Skills - All, except Decoy and Valkyrie.
Javelin and Spear Skills - None.

Assassin
Martial Arts - None, except Cobra Strike*.
Shadow Disciplines - All, except Psychic Hammer, Mind Blast, Shadow Warrior, and Shadow Master.
Traps - None, except Blade Shield**.

(*Cobra Strike deals no extra damage. Not sure how useful it'll be on its own.)
(**Blade Shield has a pathetic enough damage output that it shouldn't hurt anything; included more for flavor than anything else.)

Barbarian
Combat Masteries - All.
Combat Skills - None, except Leap.
Warcries - All, except War Cry.

Druid
Elemental - None, except Cyclone Armor.
Shape Shifting - None, except for Lycanthropy, Werewolf, Werebear, and Hunger*.
Summoning - All, except Poison Creeper, Spirit Wolves, Dire Wolves** and Grizzly.

(*Hunger does not increase damage at all. Chow down!)
(**Dire Wolves may have a 1-point investment for corpse-eating purposes.)

Necromancer
Curses - All.
Poison and Bone Spells - None, except Bone Armor, Bone Wall, and Bone Prison.
Summoning Spells - None, except Skeleton Mastery*, Clay Golem**, Iron Golem**, Golem Mastery, and Summon Resist.

(*I don't know why you'd invest in it, but hey, it's allowed.)
(**These Golems are capped at 1 point each, for their utility effects; that is, slowing from CG and Auras from an item used to make an IG.)

Paladin
Combat Skills - None, except Holy Shield.
Defensive Auras - All.
Offensive Auras - All.

Sorceress
Cold Spells - None, except Frozen/Shiver/Chilling Armor and Cold Mastery.
Fire Spells - None, except Warmth, Enchant, and Fire Mastery.
Lightning Spells - None, except Telekinesis*, Teleport, Energy Shield, Thunderstorm**, and Lightning Mastery.

(*Telekinesis is permitted only for picking up or activating items and using its synergy with Energy Shield. Not that you'd want to actually use it for killing...)
(**I went back-and-forth a lot on Tstorm, but if you think it's a little too much like a direct-damage spell, feel free not to use it.)

Any skill that is not allowed may be pumped for synergies but cannot be cast on its own.

Build rules aside, here are the other specifics:
  • Version 1.10+
  • HC only, or SC until first death.
  • Untwinked.
  • RWM and any colored-rune mods are the only acceptable mods.
  • /Players settings can be changed freely.
  • Muling items off the character is OK.
  • ATMA is OK as an extended stash.
  • Single clears only, but full clears are optional.
  • Any merc is acceptable.
  • Charges and "oskills" are allowed as long as they are otherwise permitted skills (e.g. Curses are OK, Zeal is not). Items with CtC skills are fine.

First to Mat/Pat wins! Or, failing that, whoever gets the highest level. The winner shall receive bragging rights commensurate with their class choice and completion, and likely their patience as well. This tournament will end when no updates are posted for two consecutive weeks. Good luck!

Re: Tournament: The Gish

Well, I think you should at least post an introduction thread before you host a tournament, but that might just be me being nitpicky:) You seem to know your way around the forum since your post is this good, and I think your idea is pretty neat.

I will join for sure as I`ve been thinking about a project like this for a long time. To be true to my ideas I have to change the rules for my character a little bit (don`t worry, I will just make it harder:)). I will enter with a necromancer, Mahatma, who hates all kinds of violence. He will not harm a monster intentionally at all. That means; no attacks of any kind, no golems, nothing that hurts any monster besides the mods attacker takes damage of X and Chance to cast X when dealt damage along with mercenary damage, of course. Otherwise it would have been pretty much impossible. He will specialize in curses with some minor use of Bone wall, prison and armors.

Re: Tournament: The Gish

I'm aiming to max CM, Fade, Venom, WB, and BS on my 'Sin. I almost deeded to Coldcrow, but 3 TPs later and I dropped her and her entire pack. Now I just have to run through CP (already cleared) to the Stony Field. I also hit two nearly-adjacent Dark Rogue boss packs, one with a Might aura and one Extra Fast. Not my smoothest start for a character, but I think I handled it well.

Re: Tournament: The Gish

I've started a sorceress named MaeLee. Her main skill will probably be Shiver Armor, and no, she won't be using Thunderstorm. Her (melee) weapon will be whatever she finds that does the most damage...right now it's a club with 2 chips, ruby and skull.

She's doing well so far, except for a spot of trouble when she entered the Cold Plains. There she encountered Devil Jade, a LE spearwoman, and her minions along with a bunch of Fallen. She did some running, but managed to finish them all off.

How about making a column in the table for the character's name?

Re: Tournament: The Gish

As a child, MaeLee didn't enjoy practicing cantrips and simple spells with the other young sorceresses. For her, fun was a rousing game of barbarians & demons with the neighboring tribes of fallen (who didn't enjoy it as much as she did). Her only interest in spells was to make herself a more formidable warrior. As she grew up, she became more and more rebellious, till finally the matriarch of her clan kicked her out to fend for herself. And fend she did, until she wandered into a camp of women whose inclinations were similar to her own. And they needed her help...

After an NDE encounter with Blood Raven, MaeLee had little trouble with the rest of the Burial Grounds, Cold Plains, and Stony Field. She got a rogue sidekick named Gwinni, found a rare scepter, and finally learned Shiver Armor, all of which made the trip through the Underground Passage easier. Now she's searching the Dark Wood for the scroll that will open the portal to Tristram.

Thomh Mahatma Mojomancer 1 Rogue Encampment

Edit: Got Cain. Found Stoutnail (unique spiked club)! It does only slightly more damage than her scepter, but the ATD 10 enhances her Shiver Armor and the nasty-looking club enhances her barbarian image. An odd thing happened on the 4th level of the Tower: MaeLee opened a chest and along with all the usual potions etc. out popped seven rare items... :) ...none of which were particularly useful. :(

MaeLee lost out to Andariel. Good tournament, AureliusTiber...too bad it doesn't seem to be attracting more players.

I know, it's a shame. But hey, I wasn't expecting too much with my first tourney, especially since I've only been a member for a week.

Soshi got a huge drop from the sparkly chest in Underground Passage 2, but it was all junk (despite the multitude of rares). I only had about 30 minutes to clear the Stony Field, UP, and find the DW waypoint, so I still have to clear DW tonight. However, I should have 1.5+ hours to hopefully at least get into the catacombs. Not having any blade attacks (or even Dragon Claw) is pretty painful for pure melee, but CoS, BoS, and high CM are making short work of even large packs. Let's hope she can keep up her killing speed.

Re: Tournament: The Gish

Huge NDE in The Pit level 2 -- CE Archer pack plus Cursed Fallen plus Extra Strong Skeletons. Even with CoS, the uniques themselves were on me hard, and being slowed the whole time made it very hard to get a word in edgewise, let alone actually cast the freakin' cloak. And even with my topaz'd helm and ring mail, still no good drops. I did gamble some decent blade talons, so my damage is remaining on par with my expectations, although it could be much better. Also, I should note that so far I've been doing full clears of all areas, which isn't necessary but keeps my rogue near my level and keeps my stash full. If it hadn't been for that cluster in The Pit I might have made it farther, but there's always next time.

Tempted to join this tourney, although I'm not a huge fan of full clears so I might lack behind in levels :scratchchin:
There are no merc or gear restrictions if i understand this correctly?

Re: Tournament: The Gish

I'm in. Cael the melee sorceress has been born! The plan is to go for Enchant as my main skill, maxing it, Warmth and Fire mastery, possibly getting energy shield up a bit. Will probably try to max block.

Item-wise, I'm feeling very fortunate. I had a Biggin's Bonnet drop early on from a chest. The 30% damage might prove interesting. Next I found a pair of Hotspur boots in the Underground passage. Not as interesting, but nice fire res (and the color!). The Arctic set belt dropped somewhere in the Jail, hoping to gamble or find another set piece for the MF. Andy herself gave me the somewhat useless Cleglaw's shield.

For weapons, I quickly snatched a magical Large axe from Charsi, which served me very well on p7, and I wore it until..in the Pit level 1, a unique dagger clanked on the ground. My first Gull ever! With that and my rings, I'm sitting on 120 MF, hoping that will help me get geared up.
I also found an Eth rune just before Andy, and used that along with my Tal from the countess to make a Stealth (TalEth) runeword in a shabby hard leather armor.

Monster-wise, not much to report. Met a fair share of LEs, but nothing I couldn't handle. A few semi-close brushes with death. Andy herself was cake.

Last thing I did was to sail to act 2 normal and get a defiance merc. Will be interesting to see the effect on his damage once I get enchant up to a decent level.

Re: Tournament: The Gish

I was thinking for a build to join this tourney for some time. Ranger paladins and enchantress sorcs seem tempting. But i decided to follow a different route to start on a project i had in mind at the same time.

I will be attending with a passive/leaper Barb. I will dump points in leap and then then start maxing one of the weapon masteries depending on what i find, maxing BO as soon as available inthe process. My latter points will go into utilities and Item find, eventually maxing it and turning this barb into a goldfinder barb. I will be playing SC so that i can continue playing even if i die and get disqualified.

Thus Greed the leaper, soon to be goldbarb is born =)

Full clears are optional, but it is single-pass so full clears may be in your best interest. There are no merc or gear restrictions, but remember, even if gear grants a forbidden skill you aren't allowed to use said skill (even though you can still use said gear).

And wow, two more join the fray! My expectations have been shattered. I'll see if I can get some more sweet, sweet claw/claw action in tonight for an update.

Re: Tournament: The Gish

Are items that proc offensive spell effects when struck/on striking allowed? Found some decent gloves, but they have 5% to cast frost nova when struck and not sure if I can use them.

He said that CtC items are allowed, so you're good:yes:

Re: Tournament: The Gish

Hi people, I will enter this tourney with an amazon.
I have played a similar build before till the 50s, but that was SC and no restrictions.
I think this time it will be more fun :)

I can only start coming weekend and then probably get in about twice a week.
Hope that is all right for updates.

Re: Tournament: The Gish

Soshi met her valiant end while surrounded by a Champion pack of Devilkin Shaman, which of course were reviving slain Devilkin through CoS, while her rogue was kept busy by a LE boss pack. In the end, she was cornered, and though she had a full belt of pots, the 1 point she had just invested in Fade wasn't enough to keep away the sparkling bolts of death.

Undaunted by his friend's death, Gronk (the Loneliest Druid) began his journey. I'm thinking max Lyc, WB, Cyclone Armor, HoW, and either a Cyclone Armor synergy or one of the Vines. And 1 point in Hunger to keep the shakes away.

Re: Tournament: The Gish

I think I'll give this one a shot as one of the characters on my "to-do list" is possible within the skill restrictions of the tournament.

I'll be playing a Paladin, probably Holy Shock with Holy Shield, but I haven't decided the makeup 100 for sure yet.

I do have a question though, just so I know before I get started. In the writeup, melee is often stressed, but then it did mention "usually" melee (as quoted below). Does this mean bows can be used, or can be used but sparingly (i.e. occassionally to get through particular challenging scenarios), or not at all? (NacRuno did also make a passing mention of Ranger Pallys).

This sort of character is typified as primarily a warrior of sorts who uses utility magic or buff magic to increase their (usually) melee fighting capabilities.

Good luck to everyone playing! Some classes are really going to have a *cough* fun time when the PI creatures start appearing in earnest!

Cheers,
Butz. :coffee:

Re: Tournament: The Gish

Butzull has a good point.

I would like to join the tourney as a bow-wielding paladin, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do that.

Re: Tournament: The Gish

Ranged is kosher. I think Enchantresses and Ranger Paladins will have the easiest time overall, but naturally, this involves a loss of style points.
