It'll never happen, but it's a nice thought!

I'm with Colorless Green, consider having some sort of cut-off date/time for putting in bids. If this goes on for 6 months(perish the thought) then it'll be awfully silly. Tossing my name in for 6k. Here's hoping he's nice to you, but not TOO nice. Look forward to hearing updates as you go =)

I don't know how many sets/uniques per run, but you have about a 50% chance of having found it by 5500 runs.

I've actually been thinking about this and don't really have a good solution yet. Obviously as I report finds and time goes on, one could get a decent idea of how big the stash is and make better guesses.

Does anyone have any ideas that would help make it fair? I don't really want to limit people from joining but there should be some advantage to joining early.

I've been kicking around some ideas about allowing people to make changes if the stash gets to a certain level or letting people sign up later but having some disadvantage (like needing to win by a certain percentage over the next person, etc.) So far, I'm not happy with anything yet and I don't want to make it too complicated. So, I'll think about it for a few days and am open to any good ideas.

Over the next week or so I'll be on vacation so Meph will probably get a break and I'll allow guesses at least until I return from vacation.

Unless one of them is eth, I'll keep the best one and throw the other 2 into the pot. If Meph is generous, I'll be generous too.

I don't know if it's a "good" solution, but what I did for one of my gambling projects (similar to this thread) was to add a certain arbitrary minimum number on from the last update for anyone that wanted to join late.

So if that arbitrary number was 2000, and the last update mentioned that you'd found 750 items so far, the lowest any new participant could guess was 2750. You could adjust the number as desired to make it larger/smaller too, to hopefully not shortchange the early participants while not discouraging new participants at the same time.

... as I said, it's not perfect (maybe not even good). But it's an idea you might consider adapting/mutating to your purposes.


Since you're the one managing the contest/giveaway, I'll leave it in your hands to choose something you feel is fair enough (and since it's your thread, those that don't like your solution need not participate :grin:).

Why not put a deadline on joining? If somebody is crazy enough to guess 30,000 or something like that, and after 30,000 runs someone else joins in and guesses 30,001, that'd be really unfair to the person who took the crazy risky guess!

What's your run schedule like? in other words, how long do we have to wait in anticipation?

and i'm on the fence about taking loot. I'm enjoying playing self-found atm, but i'm getting to the point of diminishing returns messing that up (an entire afternoon mfing with maybe 1 grailer, knowing that it's just going to get slower and slower!) Do i need to decide if i'd take the loot in advance or can i just decide to pass or not when the epic day arrives?

I think CG did it the right way. He has by far the most room to win loot =P

That's exactly what I'm saying. I'm taking the long shot at the beginning, but it stops being a long shot if people can still add guesses when/if he hits many thousands of runs.

I'm not going at a crazy rate but I will try to get an hour in every day. Some days I may play some of my tournament characters but I'll try to at least keep making progress. Like I said earlier in the thread, I'll be on vacation for a week or so and probably won't see any playing time at all.

You don't have to decide now. In fact, even if you say you want no loot now, you can always change your mind later.

All right, I think I've got a good idea on when to cut off entries. I'll allow entries until the lowest guess on the list is out of the running for the top 5 prizes. So as it stands now, Zalaqai guessed 598. For him to be out of the running, Bassen through nualum would be the top 5. nualum's guess is 2789 so once I hit 1694 S/U's, nualum would be closer than Zalaqai and Zalaqai would be out of the running for the top 5. At that point, I'll make a post saying that entries are closed and we'll see how things shake out. Now if people continue to make guesses on the low end, that 1694 limit may decrease but for now, that's where we're at.
