Hellgate London

i wondered that too...i had my hopes dashed for a zon/rogue type character...apparently they think that bows are too outdated...this is a game set in the future....future? why the swords and thumping sticks then?

If it's an apocolyptic future, it could be that there is a limited supply of ammo. At that point you would have to do with anything you can find. There have been many movie/book scenarios played out in this regard. The war starts with nukes. Then the nukes run out. Then you use other rockets, then guns, then swords/clubs/sticks/stones. It is a depressing future if that is the future of this game. But it sounds like fun to me!

The one thing I see that I dont like is the weapons/equipment and PvP situation. The one thing I LOVE about D2 (at least classic because Rares rule) is the random MODs. Are they going to have that because its almost needed for some good PvP. I guess I just am comparing this game to much to D2. I dunno. D2 is so amazing for things like balanced PvM and PvP skillz and equip.

D2 WAS so amazing for things like balanced PvM and PvP. In 1.09 any class could clear out Hell CS during the time it took a group of 7 to clear out cows. Sure, cow level was bogus, but who played that anyway? in 1.10 and above, classic has no balance in terms of PvM (hammerdin overpowered, barb essentially worthless, etc) and in PvP there seems to be a lot less skill involved now that leech was changed. Duels in 1.09 and before seemed to be a lot more dependent on skill and getting a setup with equally balanced leech, AR, damage, and life. Now it's basically cookie cutter barbs, using angelics and the twitch/swordback (softcore) or the rattlecage/grim shield/block shield set (more hardcore).

Barbs are great MFers, much better than any other char IMO.
The newb BvB setup works against some BvA builds and other newb BvB builds, but my defense BvB has needed only goblin toes, not even angelics, to dominate BvB on non ladder from 1.10a through 1.10b (retired now, sick of dueling)
1.09 duels did have a nice balance though.
Zon < Smiter < Speeder < BvB < Zon

I still like classic sorcs in 1.1x though, although it would be a lot nicer without 3soc saph shields and hawkmail.

i think that's because sor is the only class the patch didn't butcher. The saph shields and hawkmails weren't common back in the day because like dougdady wrote pvp was.. well.. better and if you were wearing those crap items against good players you weren't wearing them for long.

Is that you playing hockey? and nice to see you posting again weep.

So, where's the beef?

So when is this game supposed to come out, anyone know? I went over to the hellgatelondon.com site and it wasnt specific. Then I went to their forums and still nothing specific. Then I went to a link to the AB, which has a set of HL forums up already, and they claim that late December was supposed to be the release date of a limited, but growing, beta testing program.

Edit: ok, earlier in this thread there is a link to a site hosted by Flux here:
http://hellgate.loadedinc.com/

There is says, and this is 2 day old information folks, that the best estimate is March 30, 2007. And yes, they sure better hurry with any kind of beta. People are pre-ordering this game already, so there is economic pressure!

thanks fearless, totally forgot about this game.. looks good but i'd still probably come running back to diablo if there was a patch or reset.

Time for a thread res....

Well, for a few months now it's been known among the gaming support community that HGL was being released on Halloween. It's TRUE. If you dont believe me, just look at the advertisement on this websites homepage.

Now the problem is: you want to find out all about HellGate London, is the game for you? you want to gush what you know to friends. But then you want most of the game to be a pleasant surprise and not pre-spoiled. At this point, I'm interested in the game's format and what sort of requirements. What sort of pvm/pvp mix is it? Will my system need an upgrade? Monthly subscription? How big is London? Suburbs and eccentric retreats included?

go to hellgatelondon.com for the official site folks

I am playing the beta atm, if you preorder it you get a beta code. As a game think of it like seriously a D3. You can play FPS,3rd,overhead if you like just by scrolling out. There are 6 classes, normal,nm,hell mode and hardcore modes. Item based gameplay so "mfing" is a big deal. There will be pvp (but not implemented yet so dunno). So far I find it really fun, other than the server problems but its beta what can I expect. If you have thought about trying a new game I would try it out. It is going to be free but you can pay 9.99 subscription for extra content (or 150 lifetime if you preorder) . I think this one may take me away from d2 forever.

Sure, but come back here after you have played it to tell us folks in the classic world what its like. I trust a classic person more than a shiny bauble overpowered LoD person's opinion.

whats that mean?
I havent played it? ( I said above I am playing beta)
I dont play classic? ( I played classic until act 5 ruined it for me)
I play LoD? ( I actually dont play d2 since a5)

Sorry, after the collapse of classic hell games last month some of my posts may be incoherent. This website might be my only connection to diablo soon. I meant for you and others to come back here and give us the lowdown on the new game, and not just go to some generic forums at another website. The opinions I trust are those of classic players, not of LoD'ers who lust for shiny loot.

Since the endgame and the runs connected with it are what gives a game longevity, it may be some time before we really know if that game is a 'diablo killer'. LoD's endgame is boring, its not worth playing after you reach lvl 92. The cs runs over there are chock full of mid levels who cant get to baal yet = sucks.

No one has any clue how the endgame of it is going to be since for beta they have a soft cap of level 22 and you are only allowed to go through 3 "Acts" So far though it has been very fun to play, and I dont see myself getting bored with it for some time to come. They have taken away alot of the d2 faults such as no unwanted pking (no tppk possible in HC mode), you only see your own drops (no pickit possible) such little things like that I believe will make this a stellar game in the end.

As crazy as it sounds, pk'ing, scrambling for drops, and periods of cheating seem to attract an awful lot of ppl into buying Diablo2. There are just alot of punks who like that kind of stuff. I seem to remember from high school that the deadbeats+punks+cheaters at basketball outnumbered the goodytwoshoe crowd. It all boils down to $$ in the marketplace.

Aside from Diablo, I've heard that Blizzard is bending over backwards to limit cheats in WoW. I just have this sneaking suspicion that Blizzard has appointed Diablo as its cheaters-come-here game. If they allowed rampant cheats in Starcraft, the Korean legislators would probably vote to censure the company and threaten to arrest them promptly on the airport tarmac.

Hellgate is out! 3 weeks now...what do u think?

go to hellgatelondon.com for the official site folks
... I think this one may take me away from d2 forever.
Not me, not what I've seen. I laid down 50 smackers and within a few minutes had to adjust to the fact that what u are pointing at is for firing and not moving towards. Maybe there is a way in options to get around this. I have a Guardian (Paladin type), lvl 12 now...

Played the game for 3 days, heavily, and have since slowed way down. Still prefer Diablo and Guild Wars and plenty of other games. There have been some threads posted comparing HGL and D2. One of them at the hellgatelondon.com site was closed in 45 minutes by an administer, certainly cuz it was critical and in my opinion, very accurate:

Hmm, cant find the link. Basically, he complained that the underground areas and even above ground looked too similar, it got boring. The xxxx steam tunnels look like the xxxx approach and the basement complex to such and such place, its the same pattern. Also the subway tunnels look all the same. (To be fair, it is indeed all under one city, so lots of variety is hard). The end of act1 is barely perceptible, and then u go into next act and see the same artwork for the subway there and its connecting steam tunnels and basements. (to be fair, there are special areas in the game with unique artwork and feel). He called HGL just another rpg. This guy played lots of D2. These are the main reasons why i put the game on the proverbial backburner.

Other threads: the hellgatelondon.com site is just packed with people complaining about the bugs in the game. Didn't it have a long beta? Also they are openly asking things like: "What was Bill Roper thinking?". Even major supporters are starting the most positive threads like: "I love HGL and I dont care what all these other people are saying". It doesnt take too long to peruse these threads to figure out that alot of people are dissatisfied.

My own additions to this...You can join games in progress, and can meet people in the same 'instance' which is equivalent to GuildWars districts. I havent had the opportunity to do this cuz it says my char is NOT allowed to join any parties, the day I tried, and i made a post about this and no one answered me, so blechh. The numbers of people in the same town or instance or district is small, maybe 5-25. No one seems to be talking, you wont see chatter or comments. You apparently have to have the chat open for this. At first I thought these people were NPC's!

Game is buggy, there was a major bug about mods being added to weapons and it wasnt working, but got patched apparently. Many people like myself played against the act1 boss and either got repeatedly hung up or lost the drop (I lost the drop). For me, items disappeared about 40% of the time went I went to town and came back 5 min later. That seems to be better now. Lag and hanging up isnt too bad for me, some people though are going bonkers about it. I've only died 3-4 times, the mobs seem to be too easy. The idea of starting out weak and being determined to get better to overcome weakness, a hallmark of many rpg's, seems to be absent here. I've heard its much harder in hell or elite or godly level difficulty, whatever it is.

There are 'subscriptions' u have to pony up either major loot, $150, or 9 bucks a month to get extra stuff, otherwise its free after your 50 bucks.

This game is primarily First Person Shooter, and just saying "oh, u can alter it to get a 3rd person perspective" is lame, most players are using some sort of rifle shooting rapidly with all sorts of mods attached to it, and creaming the monster mobs.

Well, lets not make any final decisions here. Its still new, and I'm only halfway thru normal mode...

I will buy Hellgate when it comes out. It really sounds like D2 but with guns. It looks like a very cool game. Speaking of playing other games, but coming back to D2, I recently did just that. I made a deal with my kids that I would give up D2 for lent. So, there is 6 weeks with no D2. I bought Oblivion during that time and started playing it. It is an amazing game. But I missed D2 and have now been playing it exclusively again for the last couple of weeks. I think I will be playing D2 forever. I wonder if I will give it up for D3?

haha when diablo2 first came out, i said i wouldn't leave diablo1 to play it, at first i didn't like it at all (except for being able to run)

that changed by 1.04

Starcrafts is pretty bad if you dont play on private servers with anti-hack launchers (best was PGtour, nowayds ICCUP - but I dont play anymore)
