Someone's on my cd key!

 I played Diablo 2 fine for.... like one year. But then now someone is using my cd key! I can't log on to my US East Account! Someone whose named mtu_Lanni24. I have no idea who that is. I called Blizzard Tech support and they said it looks like people used cd key generators to steal my cd keys. DAmn! So looks like I have to do some stuff for getting a new one.

Let's see, just for the sake of it.
-Have you ever used any third party program, such as a loader, maphack or anything like it?
-Do you use an antivirus and anti-spyware programs, and make regular scans to make sure you don't have fishy spyware on your computer?
-Do you use programs for filesharing, and for some reason share your entire computers hard drive?

If the answer on any of the above is 'yes', that might be a reason. Else you can be really unlucky and have a keygen come up with your key, but I'd guess the chances for that are somewhat slim...

Nope. I have never gotten a single virus. I try to run a tight security. Avast + sygate all the time, and I don't use d2loader or maphack or any other 3rd party programs. I also don't p2p or download music illegally or share my entire computer's hard drive.

I have no idea how the hell this can happen. I palyed d2 fineee for a lonnnnngg time. :(

is the name of the person being used the name you used when installing d2?

if so, then look for game.exe in the task manager and end it, sometimes d2 crashes and leaves the part running that is logged into bnet

Have you ever used the bnet forums? The ones that require your cdkey for some unknown god awful reason? I've seen a lot of scams involving links to rather convincing yet bogus bnet pages. Log into those and it's bye bye everything.
On a side note, I wonder how much banning of cdkeys and whatnot takes place as a direct result of what a person does on the bnet forums. I've seen on more than one occasion people talking about hacks and whatnot on there.
Perhaps thats the REAL warden. lol. Idk, something to think about. Why else would they want the key and account?

Maybe a random keygen got yours?

Who knows.
Also...I read LOOOONG ago that there was a specific type of "spyware" that actually searched for D2 cdkeys when on your computer.

1. My cd key was purchased from a game store.

2. Someone else is using it, not me.

3. I already checked the taskmanager.exe

4. I guess I will just start a new char in the Us West. :(

There's your problem, you bought a cd key from a game store .... turnabout's fair play.

Next time buy the retail version of the game .

Game store doesn't mean online game store. There are stores in real life you know? When you installed it did you use mtu_Lanni24 as the name? If not then it really is strange.

A couple of non-hack possibilities:

1) If the game you bought was used, the original owner may have kept the cd key and started using it with another disk.

2) Did you ever install D2 on another computer, then sell, loan or give it away without uninstalling it?
If so, someone could just plop a D2 cd into the drive and start playing with your cd key.

3) Is it possible that someone copied down your cd key from the case?
People get their cd keys banned all the time for violating the terms of use (using hacks, selling items for cash, spamming, etc). It's not unheard of for someone to copy a cd key down if they were left alone in a room and happened to see a d2 cd case lying around.

Anyway, here's a link for reporting this and getting a new cd key:

http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=adt0641p

Note: There will be no charge to replace your CD-Key as long as you send in the original CD-Case with the original CD-Key sticker attached to it. Once we receive your package, we will disable the existing CD-Key and assign you a new one and return it to you by mail. You will need to mail in the CD case for the replacement CD-Key to the P.O. box listed below.

Yeap. I'm gona have to do that new cd key thing as blizzard's site is doing. sigh...

actually it says i have to send them 10 bucks. hell no. I can just buy the battlenet chest for like...5 bucks for a retail version. :)

The "NOTE" in my post is right off the link. Read it closely. As long as you send in the cd case with the sticker on it, there is no charge. You only have to pay the $10 if you don't have the cd case.

I hear this an awful lot, but have never actually seen battlechest go for anything less than $30 on sale. Where is it that people are getting this for this price?

Here in France you can buy D2 (Original + Expansion) for a bit less than 10€, in reallife shops of course. But it's not the Battlechest edition, it's a much simpler package with (probably no) game documentation or extras within it.

I've bought the Battlechest some years ago, but I really can't remember the price.

This one got me thinking though, what prevents someone in a store from simply taking a snapshot with his mobile phone from cdkeys from the games in the racks?

(if not on the case itself, the little book inside, if they put the cd in it at the cash register, you can open the case in the rack)

The CD-key is a sticker in the manual.

Excuse me, but wouldn't you ask for a new manual if you saw the employee taking pictures of the manual of your game that you just bought with your money? And the likelihood of the employees actually playing D2 isn't exactly huge either.

I meant a random person in the store... it can be done fast and without anyone noticing it, so...

Hmmm.
I own two platinium edition of D2 Lod and in both cd key is printed on sticker on cd case (europe version). Cd key on manual i have on EA products (BF2) and also on HL2 and CS.
