Homebrew Port of Diablo 1 Works on Nintendo Switch

A YouTuber reveals how he got the reverse engineered Diablo source code working on his homebrew Nintendo Switch.

The original Diablo source code was reverse engineered by a fan last year, creating a version called DevilutionX. This opened up new possibilities for modders who have the skill and motivation to change the game to do so, which includes bringing it to different consoles.

YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer has done just that, bringing Blizzard’s original descent into hell to a homebrewed Nintendo Switch!

But don’t get too excited about the possibility of playing the original Diablo on a Switch console. The DevilutionX version doesn’t work on all consoles, and it requires a Switch that can run homebrews. So, try at your own risk. There’s also the very strong possibility that messing around with your Switch could either brick the console or cause Nintendo to ban it from going online. Currently, the only Diablo game that officially works on Switch is Diablo III: Eternal Collection, which includes the original game along with some exclusive content.

MVG made a detailed video about bringing Diablo to Switch, which extensively discusses the history of reverse engineering source codes. Strangely, Diablo involved using the Japanese PlayStation One port of the game.

While we certainly don’t recommend messing with your Switch to play with an iffy port, the video is worth checking out.
