Wind Druid tips

Hi all.

Well, since MF'ing has lost some luster lately, I have been questing mostly. I wanted to start another powerhouse character too, and have decided on a Wind Druid!

Ok, so I read and bumped strijdje's guide to it, and then asked a question about what I read. It doesn't seem that topic is getting responses, so I will ask in my own little thread.

1. It seems like a bear is a nice thing to have. At what point is it suggested to get it? Either right away, to have the little bit of summons help, or after all the elementals are maxed, to make your killing go faster.

2. Someone mentioned solar creeper, which is intriguing. I don't want too many points in energy (read: none!) and this was interesting. Does anyone think its worth 3 points? I know you max Oak Sage last, but actually I am not that big a fan of that dam little spirit after its performance with my Fire Druid, so I won't be let down if I dont get it maxed.

3. There is no three. Unless you have more good tips!

Honestly, you won't really need the bear until later in the game...Wind Druids seem rather useless until they're in the higher levels, well past level 30-40, so you may prefer to get the bear before hand. It's really dependant upon how you want to do it. I got mine last and I had no adverse effects.

2. To be honest, with a pair of Silkweaves, Frosties and a SoJ or 2 and some light sprinkles of energy, you won't need solar creeper. That's just my opinion. When I had mine, I could sit there for about a full minute and spam Tornadoes like nothing.

1. i always get a grizzly asap with any druid build. he is awesome for casting at badguys to distract them while you close in to use your skills. definetly get him
2. i never used solar creeper but i have used carrion vine on most druids(the rabies druid couldn't use it otherwise would screw with his charged psn creeper synergy) and it works well for keeping casters and meleers on non-leech targets alive. a windy should be able to get enough mana away to spam tornadoes. especially if you go with jalals as it has+20 nrgy and +5 mana after kill

3.resists arent too important as cyclone armour works at 0 resists all the time. but they can still be handy if your clone armour is done against gloams and other strong elemental attackers.

what gear set-up are you planning on using?????

I would say add to Bear as soon as you reach 30 (I'd suggest keeping 2 points so you can add to both Hurricane and Bear at the same time...) I'd only suggest putting 1 into it, as at higher levels your wind should be good enough to only need him to tank. With Oak Sage and his high normal life, that shouldn't be a problem.

Oak Sage all the way. Yes Solar creepers are good, but you can buy mana potions in town, so why bother? If you really want to, add 1 point to it. Any more is wasting good points :cheesy:

Suggestions:
Fun is always good to have.
Make sure you regularly cast Hurricane, you don't want it to wear out on you.
Tornado is difficult at times to aim, so good luck with that.

thanks for the quick responses. I have no uber gear, I have some decent gear, but not much. Not a one elemental skiller either, darn it. He is going to be mostly untwinked for a while. I am playing through this guy with my *friend* (dont worry, I am not picking ANYTHING up) and he is going Wolf druid, so I probably dont need the bear till later.

Thanks!

yeah what Mil said.

I just Pat'ed a windy - nowhere near the experience strijdje or Mil have but here's my view -

In Normal and NM, casting ravens and dire wolves helped defeat all the monsters while I hadnt maxed up the Twister/Tornado/Hurricane spells. (I spent one skill point down the tree to summon grizzly)

Once the wind attacks were maxed and I was in Hell, the wolves and ravens didnt last long against the critters of Hell, since I only had one point in each. +skills items does help of course. However, I found the grizz to be quite helpful along with the defiance merc in distracting bosses away from little windy spamming 'canes and tornadoes. Grizz really helped w the travincal council dudes and Bremm's pack

I personally didnt put 20 into Oak Sage cuz after 5-6 points, it seemed like the little guy kept getting whacked by any ole quill rat or devilkin in Hell. I didnt get any of the creeper/vines either. believe me by that time you will be more interested in your casting rate and mana consumption.

Yea, me to, i feel the forum is not so active recently, maybe it is exam season or busy season on most western country.

1. Big bear is useful later in late nightmare and hell to act as a longlife tanker while you keep spamming tornado, especially against big boss. 1 point is enough though.

2. Depend on your playstyle, if u go twinked, i think it is not very useful.

3. Currently i'm building my Windruid and he stuck at early levels that i was forced to spend 3 point on dire wolf to help me progress further (untwinked HC).

4. For early level i suggest you to do lots of exp run and hurry reach the tornado on early act2, dont waste any point on Twister, its too weak! i regret have wasted 5 points on it. max it out after tornado and hurricane. You will rely on melee for some while before tornado is avaiable for use.

Windruid will shine when he reach higher level, say 60+.

good luck on your effort

Just a bit of hijack...

Does anyone here have a suggestion for wind druid (planning on) using the Aldur's Set. I'm a sucker for Sets and I want my characters to wear their specific set as much as possible. Is this viable with a Wind Druid? Or will it be under-powered due to the lack of +skills. And if do wear that set (I still can't, my druid is still lvl 65 and in NM Act4), what other items should I use to complement the set and go through hell.

And another thing... does anyone here use an Earthshaker (that +7 elemental hammer/mace) for their wind druid? I think the strength requirement is too high for mine.

Thanks for any suggestion/s or comment/s on this. :)

Bear is *very* handy and I haven't had any problem with him staying alive with only 1 point and +skills. As someone else mentioned, resists aren't a big worry either because of the way cyclone armor works. Oak sage does tend to get beat on, but the life bonus is more than worth it. And at higher levels (it's getting close to maxed now) it survives through pretty much anything so I'd definitely go with Oak sage. For a vine, I always use carrion as healing pots don't do squat when you're using an Oak sage.

A windy needs fair gear as he's totally dependant on +skills for dmg. OTOH, I'm surviving just fine with a +1 ammy, Lore/Tarnhelm, Dark Clan Crusher, Que Hegan's or some other +1 armor, Rhyme shield, SOJ, Manald Heal, Rare boots and gloves and no elemental skillers. I'm killing a little slower than I would like, but he's still fun to play and a couple of choice items will change his dmg and mf alot (like a shako and a skullders).

As far as aiming the tornados go, you'll get the feel after some practice. I've become very suspicious that they actually "seek" a little so if I'm having trouble hitting someone like Baal, I just back off a bit and cast off center a little.

Also, keep cyclone armor going and you can tank gloams fairly well. Very handy little bonus ;)

As far as your merc goes, try to get a Reaper's Toll. The decrep helps slow everyone down and increases your dmg as tornados are physical.
