Will D2 last forever?

Was talking with my brother today, actually trying to get him back into the game and possible into the SPF. And he mentioned sometrhing that did kinda scare me. He said since basically losing all his stuff to Bnet(becasue he's letting them fade away), why lose them again when prob 2 yrs into the future or so, wont be able to play D2. He said hes got a game right now that his recent comp wont play, and thats the future for D2..to fade away becasue of systems outdating it......and this has basically freaked me out since!
So this is possible right? I mean XP wiped out several games I'm sure for people. Outdating them. Will D2 join that list of "to old to be played anymore".

Sucks badly I think. I've been going on 3 yrs. And I actually see me going another 2 yrs easily..possibly more with the SPF keeping it interesting.

So..what ya think fellas?

hmmm... I guess there might be some outdated games, but as long as there is winblows, they'll probably have a backwards compatibility mode to run older games, like they do now. I wouldn't be too worried about that...

It probably will still last on for a long time for some people, but its practically dead for me unfortunately :(

I keep starting characters, then getting bored very quickly (ie. before even doing the Den of Evil) and deleting them.

Its been this way for a few months now to be honest. The only thing that really got me back into the game was my Assassin, but when I reached Guardian with her and completed every goal I ever set for myself at once, well that kind of completely burns you out :(

I'd try playing one of the older versions, but I can't live without /players 8 :grrr:

No, it will not last forever. People will loss interest at some point, and it's already been quite sometime since it's out.

Nope... not forever. The human race wont last that long. Our planet will have boiled away into vapor as our sun explodes long before for ever.

Will it last a long time? Yep. It's got quite a following, and like chess, there will be people to play it as long as there are boards left to play it on. Pretty soon, these computers we're using will be replaced by a much more efficient device... kinda like the computer on Star Trek, and we'll see the end of games on a video screen. Perhaps a Holodeck idea, though I could bet you that if they invented a programable Holodeck, someone would make a D2 mod for it.

Far fetched? Probably. But rememeber that 25 years ago a young and foolish Bill Gates delcared that no one could possibly ever need more than 256 K of memory.

Diablo is still alive because there is still no alternative on the market. Once there is there will still be people playing the game now and than. There are still people playing Diablo 1 after all.
A bigger problem would be when people stop visiting this site and they take it down :horror:

Future computer technology will always be able to emulate prehistoric computers, so that should not be a problem. You can still play pacman and that is almost older than I am.

I wholeheartedly disagree that some product will replace it. I still play Diablo, and hell... I still play rogue.exe from what... 1970(ish)? I pulled out a Trek emulator the other day and recalled my early childhood playing on a PDP1170 before there were even monitors. Yep... we played on printouts. Still love that game. There are games that are classics within every genre. DII is a classic, and will retain a playing community even if a new nifty game comes out.

Well now I wasnt talking abut replacing D2..I'm talking about it becoming outdated from PC's. Like some games/controllers that I used to have that wont work on XP..maybe the next edition might not let games older than 5 yrs old work?? This is what I was talking about.
Basically making us keep a old comp, and playing on thisgame on it..which isnt a bad idea btw....I'll do that..:)
But what if the comp breaks!..and no tech will work on this dinosaur!1..OMG :scared:

I've had it since the day it's come out, and I've loved every minute of it, myself. I've taken breaks at times, sure, but I still come back because it's such a great game to play. The only thing that made me stop playing D1 was D2, and it's likely that the only thing that would make me leave D2 would be D3 (or, like tweety mentioned, an alternative), and so forth. This game is just too damn fun!

And really, the only games that XP squashed were the DOS-based games, which is understandable. Windows games will likely only be phased out when Windows itself is obsolete and changes to something else. My friend and I used to play Impossible Mission back on his Commodore 64 when we were kids, and a while back I was able to play it via emulator on my P4 2.66ghz. So yeah, as long as there's a need for it, an emulator will be written by someone at some point.

:worship: Diablo will live forever!!! :worship:

Of course Diablo II will be around forever. It'll probably take me that long to play all the variants I want to. ;)

will diablo last forever.....

dude....
serious, stop with the stupid questions, off course

diablo > all

*stands up*
hi im robin, and im a diablo addict!

why do people always steal my comments :( stupid shagsbeard

i was gonna say "can you even fathom how long forever is? a billion trillion million years is less than a single drop of water in the ocean." :p cause im like that...

personally, i can expect to be playing this game when im old, i know that eventually ill take a long break from it, but ill be back... they always come back...

diablo will be around along time for me yet. seeing as i still have 1 million and 1 goals to achieve and im too cheap and poor to buy anything new

d2 wont ever truly die any IMO. it'll be one of the classic games you can always get out and have fun doing. like Doom 2, excite bike and Duck hunt

What helps DII out is that it is not really overbloated with graphics. It has some simple graphic images that are crude by today's standards. It is the gameplay that will keep the game going. People just live with the antiquated graphics because it is only background for the game. For this game, the graphics are fine for what it does. Think about it, I think the graphic resolution is only 800x600.

Will it last forever? No, nothing does. But the game does have potential to keep running on newer systems by utilizing basic graphic sets that will probably retain backward compatibility.

Another thing that could possible make D2 last longer is..as we all know some make GOOD money selling items at certain places. And are very crafty poopers of such to keep a game going for a loong time. I mean they could prob even make the new patch and such to keep all their busniess going.
So as long as I can keep playing..;)

I've heard rumors of such people actually making a living on D2 items. Whew..one thing I do know..never make what you love your money maker..loses its luster I would think. *stops there be4 this thread becomes something else*

hi im robin, and im a diablo addict!

You can't be an addict unless you have a level 99.. :cheesy: wait...

You ARE an addict, uh.. *runs away*

some people are addicted to drugs, others to alchohol, we here at the single player forum and tied together by our one true love and addiction, DiabloII

Gaming addictions are almost worse than drugs sometimes. Your wife/gf/whatever always gets on you to stop and spend some time with her/him/other. There will come a time when our loved ones (if there are any left) will force us to make a trip to the addiction detox center.

I think it will be ok. Guess we should be prepared for certain games to reach a cult status much like movies are, Rockie horror picture show and all that.

There are some people out there that still play quake 1, either original or heavily modified.

Which is why I think that old games will still be able to be played on new os & hardware. If bill gates realises the market need for such A thing, he will incorporate it into his future os's. after all, he wants us to buy and use the latest version of windoze. The more motorvation he gives us to upgrade, the more billions for him.

Or, alternatively, if there is enough enthusiasts out there, Im sure some bright spark would write an emulator program. Besides, I wonder how long blizzard will contiune running d2 on its battle.net servers not that WoW has hit the band width and at $x per month when d2 earns them didly squat for server access. battle.net's days of d2 could be numbered but us single players will carry on!
