Why do you think Blizzard haven't given Mercs gear to wear? You could with mercs in D2 and followers in D3.

Gear would make mercenaries over powerful and would make it even more noticable between playing with them and then swapping to party play where you can't have them.
The build you need with a Mercenary would be so different to without. There is no Armory like Diablo 3 so you can not swap between 2 builds, you have to change your own items and skills.

Rares are just crafting materials now, I salvage them without even checking them. If money is short I will just sell the whole inventory.
