Why do you play Single Player?

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

My reasons:

1. I can play at my own pace, taking long breaks and returning whenever I want, not worrying about chars/mules expiring, or ladders resetting;

2. 100% sure that my items are not tainted or duped, and no contact or benefit from characters who may cheat or use duped/illegal items ("indirect taint");

3. No one to criticize my weird builds or "poor man/crap" items; :)

4. No server lag or issues, can download lots of stuff while I play.

That's about it. :)

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

I simply enjoy the setting my own pace as well with various builds and the static maps in SP. The community at the SPF is great as well, ATMA or GoMule is fantastic

Of course! I forgot the static maps! They are excellent for full clears/tourneys and just to know that it's *your* map and not some random bnet map, giving the game another sense of it being your own work.

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

My reasons:

1. Hording
2. p8
3. Weird Builds ( I have none but I'm full of weird plans)
4. The SPF (the most important reason for me)

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

Its interesting, since i used to think that D2 should be played on b.net and not in SP. But now im the complete opposite.

The reason is that i can't stand alot of the people on b.net! I enjoyed playing with the people from the HC-forum here on dii.net, but it was impossible to play in public games due to hacks like TPPK. I also despise the dupes and economy. I grew tired of all the bots, hacks, cheats and the general attitude.

So i slowly started to play SP instead. As i learned about RWM, Atma and /players8 i liked this way of playing more and more. ATMA is such a great tool, and i can't imagine going back to b.net and the hassle with mules.

The SPF is also a great community with alot of knowledge and creativity that keeps the game fresh and fun. Without the community i would probably have stopped playing a long time ago.

And you don't miss out on anything really, im glad we don't have Annihilus and Torches. You can even trade and MP! And the economy is far superior.

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

Other than the numerous good reasons listed above, I found that I just ended up playing by myself when I was on bnet anyway, due to lack of trust or just meph running etc.So it seemed pointless not to switch to single player as I was effectively playing single player anyway. I think the best experience I had on bnet was when myself and Melianor (Sorceress Mod) played together, it was fun, relaxed, well mannered and generally a pleasant experience. One of my primary reasons for not playing any internet games is that I have a large family and thus the bandwidth would get sucked up by diablo causing my family to get annoyed with me...which is not conducive to a long and healthy life :P

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

Long ago, when I first got D2, I played single player for my first couple of chars beacuse I wanted to know what I was doing before going online.

But I felt invested in those characters so I only went to open battle.net, where I found that trading was a travesty of cheating. (someone traded me forstburns for a p gem, I presume because it was duped). So I lost interest.

But some friend at work convinced me to restart on bnet, because bliz enforced the rules on the servers so it was legit. They played HC, which was a huge step for me to get used to, but it made even normal Andarial an adreneline rush.

Played HC on bnet for months and months. Had a WW barb die in normal cows to Black Wall of Doom. Had 2 necros die in Hell Arcane sanct, and 1 die in NM arcane sanct, all 3 trapped by my minions (this was before you could move past your minions) Lost like 5 sorcs to various lag, including one in act 1 hell, entering the barracks, when the necro I was teamed with Save/Exit out because of the lagspike, so everything decended on my little sorc.

The crowd I played with, switched games to Everquest, and so did I. Quite fun for a long time.

I came back to D2 on bnet for D2X, but it wasn't the same. At that point, d2 classic had decended into just endless cow runs, and d2x was constantly doing bloody foothills runs, or whatever. And lots of lvl 20 ppl begging for you to power them past the ancients.

Meanwhile, the dup hacks were getting worse and worse. Between the hacks and the lag, I just didn't want to deal with playing HC online anymore.

So I started to play offline. But I quickly didn't like it. Online, since I played with a coop group, it was easy to xfer items and to store them on mule characters.

offline, I couldn't save anything. Very frustrating. Plus, I was used to my HC characters having a pretty decent chance that if they died, someone in the group would be able to loot my items for me, and I'd get them back.

So, to deal with the item problem, I started making non-HC chars, but if they died, I would load them up to xfer their items to a new char, and then I deleted the dead guy. But even that was hard because I had to arrange with my bro to be able to xfer items.

I was getting ready to just give up and quit D2 for good, when I found the SPF. I was looking for a utility which would let me store items. All I could find was "cheat" utilities which would let me edit my character. I didn't want those, I just wanted my sorc to be able to find a nice sword for my barb, or my barb find a nice wand for my necro, or my necro to find a nice shield for my pally, etc.

Well, I found the SPF (kinda funny, the original coop HC group on bnet had used purediablo.com's forums) and found Atma. ATMA saved me. Without atma, I would have just been too frustrated at seeing a great sorc item drop for my necro, but know that my brother was getting tired of helping me xfer items.

In the end, with the SPF, I found a helpful community of legit players.

Suprisingly, offline play, once considered the haven for cheaters, is where I found the most legit players. Players who are legit not because Bliz will ban them if they aren't, but players who are legit because they hold themselves to high standards.

So, to answer your question: Why do I play single player?
-- to avoid lag, to be legit, to know that I passed all the obstacles solo, to not worry if my play schedule doesn't fit my friend's schedule, and to have fun.

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

ps. been a long time, i forget to mention PK's (I used to play HC, so PK's are not just a momentary annoyance) and the 3-month delete policy. I lost an entire account full of mules to that; it was part of what gave me the push to play offline.

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

I was reading up on stuff in the Amazon forum here and found a link to Jiansonz' Impaleazon thread. Just reading this got me hooked on single player, and in no time I was joining / creating tournaments.

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

Hi, I'm new here.

I play single player so I don't lose all of my stuff when I don't feel like playing for 3 months. I also got tired of not being able to play public Hardcore games. It's much easier to just play SP and keep all my stuff without fear of hack death.

All that aside I think the main reason I like SP is I can play at my own pace. I never did like rushing and now I never have to if I don't want. :)

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

Welcome DeadLights. You should post an introductory thread in the main part of the SPF.

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

So I finally re-registered here after years of away time. I'm an old school release D2/LoD player, used to be as hardcore as some of you still are.

I really enjoy both parts of the game, but I just made a new account this weekend because of the D3 announcement of course.

Where did I set it up? BNet. I spent most of my time before here so I'd go back. Granted I'm one to pretty much solo play for quite awhile and not just fall into the typical rushing mentality. Plus BNet also has the ability to find people for in-game help relatively quickly. When I played with my friends back in the day mule'ing was easily done.

Single player is pretty fun too, 'pause' is nice, and the lack of internet connection requirement is nice too :D

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

Er ... what is "Battlenet"?

SP for me, all the way. My pace, my goals, no lag, no interference and a great community

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

-/players 8
-ATMA
-being able to keep my characters, rather than them getting deleted every few months
-doing the lan thing with friends

i think that about does it for me, there are a few good perks to battle.net, like being able to trade with others for that item you don't have. but ive mfed enough with my hammerdin to have pretty much all i need, save for the stuff hell mephisto doesn't drop(and 2 or 3 choice items that haven't yet dropped in the time i have farmed him).

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

My top ten reasons.

  1. No temp bans = more efficient harvesting & better gameplay experience
  2. No realm downs = more efficient harvesting, better gameplay experience & more safety
  3. No lag = better gameplay experience
  4. Atma = leisure & safety
  5. No hacks/dupes/cheats/whatever = better gameplay experience
  6. No dumbasses = better gameplay experience
  7. Access to previous patches = unique, powerful equipment
  8. No camping games for Diablo Clone anymore = less real-life distraction
  9. No spam/Baal/whatever bots = better gameplay experience
  10. No expiration of any kind = leisure

There's only two downsides: having to backup savegames and no World and no Pandemonium Event.
However, having to backup is still infinitely better than being restricted to eight characters per account and having to semi-perm everything and then once more after a couple of months of no play.
Also, it's not the unique charms I miss. I mean, I'm kinda relieved not having to plan so far ahead anymore in terms of strength & dexterity, the two charms having a total range of 20-40 to each stat. It's the challenge that I miss. Then again, challenge can come from other things as well, such as non-cookie cutter builds. And really now, once you've succesfully completed the 'quest' with the standard smiter the first time, the next times most excitement comes from hoping not to get a realm down.

Re: Why do you play Single Player?

A horribly bad connection to the net. And I dont find coop that attractive anyway. I like Diablo as a real-time nethack variant, and as such I play it at idle times, like other people might play Doom, or Minesweeper. I like building the characters over time.

Besides, I can still play open battle-net or TCP/IP private games with my SP chars, if I want. The contrary is not true.

PD: Also, and as other people have commented: having your chars stored in your Hard disk is handy. I play D2 from time to time, but between time and time there might be varying spans of time. I hate having to start from scratch not because I want to, but because Bnet deleted my chars (such as my Bnet 67 necro, or my 72 sorceress (which had a good number of decent uniçues :( )

I used to play b.net. I played with an SPF'er(asdfgah) there.

By the time I lost my 6th fishyzon in HC battle.net(I thought that build was supposed to be foolproof?!), I was wondering how can you get them to guardian in SP:scratchchin:. None of them died to lag or pk's, all were my fault. Me thinks SP teaches you to play better, just as HC does.

Also, I started to hate muling by the time my 4th fishyzon was running nm act bosses. I had to unload her after almost every run. ATMA>Bnet mules!

Having the players8 command at my disposal is sweet ofc:nod:

I also like the SPF crowd, the non-cookie-cutter builds, the mat-pat-guardian threads, the great writeups by AJK, etc..etc...
