What version of game is most common?

Hey everyone,
I'm not new to the forums, just newly registered. I browse the forums pretty frequently. Planning on coming back to Diablo 2 tonight after just playing off and on for the past few years. Was pretty hardcore player for first 5 years or so.

I really like the SPF community and forum here on diii.net forums, so I'm looking to play SP and all that good stuff. :)

I've been reading through the posts here and read stuff about different versions, version switchers, and whatnot.

Just wondering what version of the game do most people play as far as SP goes? And how does the version switcher thing work? I was still a little confused after reading about it.

Pretty sure it is 1.12a, that is the most recent version.

As soon as 1.13 is out, people would switch to it too, is my guess.

I don't know much about version switching, I don't do it (and I find it a bit abusive to bring forward broken recipes, overpowered items, etc, but to each his/her own of course).

Most people play 1.12. If you want to do any substantive MP or trading, that is the version you will want.

If you are interested in time traveling and starting fresh, you might want to start in an earlier version. Let's imagine you build a good 1.09 classic character and find a few good items. You can then use those items to build a second 1.09 character and convert him/her to 1.12 expansion. With a minimum of effort, you now have a good foothold in both versions -- 1.12 for most play, 1.09 (or 1.06/1.07/etc) for whatever time traveling goofiness you want to engage in (presumably HF rushing, in this example). One of the biggest barriers to time traveling is the pain of starting from scratch with no gear, but since you have to do it anyway after a restart, you might as well do it in an earlier version so you only have to do it once.

There is very little difference between 1.10, 1.11 and 1.12 for SP play. But what ever the current patch is, right now 1.12b is recognized as "standard".

Considering they never released 1.12b, I'm going to guess that 1.12a is probably the most common version right now. ;)
