What is the highest level you get by staying in normal?

My orb sorc is at lvl 67 after countless baal runs in normal. She has yet to beat normal baal. My goal is to get her to lvl 70 so she can use anni (or even level 75 for torch). Is lvl 70 in normal like lvl 96 in hell, and level 75 in normal is like lvl 99, in term of time spent to level her?

Normal is the only difficult level I play now. I find it is fun and do-able without getting rushed, and use only the self found gear.

Re: What is the highest level you get by staying in normal?

Umm... Dude. A lvl 67 Orb Sorc in Normal will slaughter everything in sight with one single Orb. So yes, it's 'doable', but is it fun? I guess it can be; for me it isn't. Besides, don't you want to get... Wait for it... Better items? You know, that's what this game is mainly about for many people. But hey, since people listen to grindcore and Britney Spears, who am I to judge the pleasures of the human race? :scratchchin:

As for your leveling question - Baal and his Minions are lvl 60 in Normal, so the exp should already be 5% of the normal amount, i.e. infinitesimal. However I'm not sure that the xp penalty applies yet in Normal. Someone more knowledgeable may be able to answer your question in detail, but I'd say you're close enough with lvl 75 as the upper limit in Norm.

well accodring to this

http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/basics/experience.shtml

nothing is stopping you to reach 99, but it might be that the sun explodes before you reach it :)

if I understand that correct, you will only recieve 5% of the exp if you are 10 lvls higher than the monster. In Normal Baal is lvl 60, so you will start to suffer when you hit 70. Then comes the penalty, at lvl 70 you start gaining smaller amounts of exp, which is calculated after you have recieved the original penalty 95% penalty. So by just killing Baal and trying to level from 98 to 99, the math would look something like this:

216862 (Baal exp) * 0.05 (too high lvl penalty) * 0,0059 (lvl 98 penalty) = ~64exp/Baal kill
291,058,498 exp needed to lvl 98->99, so you would kill baal over 4.5 million times :D
(think in Hell the number of Baal kills was ~11.000)

please don't do this, you'll end up in the loony house

[edit] if someone has the time to play with Excel, you could do the math on lvl 70 to lvl 99, but the number of Baal kills should be tens of millions
[edit2] there might be some other restrictions, not mentioned on Arreat and yes I know, you have to clear the throne room, where the real exp is; but just wanted to play with the numbers, not investigate how much exp you get on average to clear the throne room in Normal;that would send me to the loony house :)

[edit] forgot my conclusion, I think lvl 70 will be the max that you'll reach, because the leveling from 70->71 will take over 20 times longer than 69->70, as you will then only get 4,5% of the exp you were getting earlier

level 67 in normal?

thats insane.

I think the highest I've waited was level 58 or so with my old HC druid (because those baal runs and loot were just so bumpin.)

Re: What is the highest level you get by staying in normal?

How many Baal runs did it take to get to 67? I usually move on to nightmare at 40-45, and even then I found getting to that level through Baal runs extremely tedious. I applaud your patience.

Exp shrines at blood moor/cold plains ftw

If you're lucky, there might be one waiting for you at River of Flame.

Re: What is the highest level you get by staying in normal?

I know this is kind of insane to play just normal. I used to play different builds and acquire gears and try them out. It is extrememly time consuming and most of time I spent on trading which is a different type of fun. Now no need to trade. It's nice to see all the games in normal and do a few rushes

Re: What is the highest level you get by staying in normal?

lol this thread is awesome...
"umm...dude."

I'm amazed someone with so many posts is posting about staying in normal until level 70...

It's funny. I think you're getting a little carried away.

Re: What is the highest level you get by staying in normal?

I recently levelled a sorc to 66 in normal. It's very easy to pk now that I can see all the normal games.

Talk about being strong against everyone :strong:

Those lvl 15s dont have a chance LOL :rolf:

The best is when they bring back their high lvls and I just stay in town like a whore...

Not lvling any more though, it's starting to take a long time. I bet you could hit 70 though.

This is why I log over to my mule when doing this. Not because I enjoy staying in normal difficulty.

Well the point is: I never intend to let this char pass normal difficulty level. Is this not clear to you?

With all the answers I got, it appears that going beyong 70 is just too time consuming. I like normal difficulties - people are generally nicer and game is less addicting.

Re: What is the highest level you get by staying in normal?

Once on a boring day I made a barbarian and I leveled him to 14 by killing mobs blood moor only. After that I gave up, it became extremely slow :whistling:

How many Den of Evil runs should one do in normal to reach 99?

Seen a couple above 70. Can't remember how far above though, 74 maybe?

That wouldn't work, since the exp penalties will drop your experience earned to zero.

As for the maximum level: I've seen a thread a few years ago where someone made it to lvl76 before he got too bored.
