What is pvp like in WoW?

I've been tempted to try WoW but university and life priorities dictate that i cannot allocate 14hours of my day into a video game lol. So i ask those of you who have tried WoW...what is the pvp like?

And whats the difference between regular servers and the pvp servers? Can you just get ganked in pvp servers versus having to accept a dueling challenge in the regular server?

thanks!

Have mercy on his soul. Lock the thread.:prop:

(I've never played, at the rate I'm going, I never will, and that's probably for the better)

on pvp servers you can flag yourself as a pvp char and possibly get PKed or PK the other faction

but if you go to "contested territory" anybody can get whacked, pvp flagged or not

He means PVE servers. While this is an Off Topic Forum I think this question falls into the "What should I do with my life kind of thread".

The great thing about WoW as compared to a lot of games I've played is that you really can't get left behind. You can have fun at your own pace. You can play an hour a day or you can play the whole day away.

But with most online MMORPG's.... it's highly addictive and can derail you plans if you don't monitor how much time you sink into it.

I quite enjoyed open pvp for the few months I played WoW last year. Hunting gnomes in Stranglethorn Vale (don't let their size fool you!) with four friends was some of the best mmo experiences ever, mostly because we got killed almost every time, hehe.

I didn't really like arena combat, it reminded me of Guild Wars' repetitive pvp. Still it was a pretty good game until the grind became intolerable.

pvp in wow is ok... it's a lot different.. there's no trash talking, no nking.. although you can camp the graveyard which is kind of like someone camping the cp wp if you died there.. the dueling scene in wow just isn't up to snuff. maybe it was my low pop server but dueling outside org was never too exciting..

PvE servers: You can raise the PvP flag and participate in world PvP. This is done via a command, though not an awfull lot people uses it. If you attack an NPC of an enemy faction(As in horde or alliance), you'll get flagged too.

PvP servers: In the low-end zones(Meant for people under level 15-20 iirc) you cannot be attacked by a guy from an enemy faction, unless you put up the PvP flag. In all other zones, it's all out PvP. In the begining, you'll most likely only experience ganking.. Again and again and again. Specially in the level 20-40 zones.
That's the real difference.
On both servertypes, you got access to battlegrounds.
But.. How is the PvP like? WoW is an PvE games, with PvE gameplay. They slapped on the PvP part, to lure some extra players. In the begining, PvP was great - This was before battlegrounds. There would be huge fights around certain key points(South Shore versus Tarren Mill for example) and raids on enemy capitals. Then battlegrounds got released, with the honor ranking system. PvP in WoW instantly converted to just another type of farming. And you wasn't really playing against your enemies, but rather your own side(Your progression in rank was based on how much honor you had gotten this week, compared to everyone els from your alliance). I've heard they changed the honor system to a more DAOC-like system - Honor points are more like gold, you stash them up and can buy items with them.
The PvP isn't interresting in itself. The 3 battlegrounds are mindnumbingly boring after the first few games. Not many different builds, you often know what to expect. Gear plays an amazing role, compared to skills.

If you want an MMORPG with lots of PvP, i'd suggest you to try DAoC. There is still life on the US servers. It's just meant to be a PvP game, and Mythic have done a great job imo, as long as you just stick to classic servers(Servers that doesn't use Trials of Atlantis, it's filled with raiding and leveling of items. An PvE expansion. All the other expansions are avaible on the classic server though, including those newer than Trials of Atlantis.).

this is how pvp works in wow

1) you encounter a warlock

2) the warlock farts in your general direction

3) before you can say "WHAT!?" you explode in a shower of blood

lol.. you know how you join like a mid lvl dueling game in d2 with your lvl 70 whatever ad some lvl 85 comes in and owns you?.. then you go get your lvl 90 and own him.. you go through that in wow all the time on pvp servers.. your lvl 25 gets ganked by some lvl 45 or maybe even some prick lvl 60, then you go get your lvl 60 and duke it out for a while.. the only difference is in d2 that process takes about 5 minutes and in wow it can take an hour. everything in wow takes sooo long.

WoW is a OK game, I've tried it, it can be kinda fun at times, but the thing that always got me was the action pace of the game was so slow. Sometimes it just becomes kind of a drag, not just the leveling factor. But then again, all the new games have been pretty slow paced, but thats why I stand with games like Diablo II, Quake styled games, fast paced is where its at, who likes waiting in queue to kill when you can get to the killing right away? Every second theres a death. Hehe.

Another thing that got me about WoW was I have no control over my character really, its all auto attack, and press a few hotkeys, I can't swing on my own, I can't shoot on my own, I can't do anything on my own, so I feel like my fate is only sealed by what i'm wearing and level, compared to the monster or player. I kind of like games that require some skill, but I guess I would say its more than that, I like games where I actually have control of whats going on and what goes wrong on my side.

Plus, WoW has a few balancing issues, and it'll probably always be like that one way or another. I think Blizzard should stick true to itself by giving us more Starcraft, Diablo, and Warcraft, but especially Starcraft and Diablo, i'm kind of sick of Warcraft at this point.

But as long as WoW is growing and more people lose their lives to that game everyday, Blizzard probably won't be coming out with anything new anytime soon. Now don't get me wrong, I know people who have lives that play that game, but that game can sometimes really get in some people's heads, especially mmorpg vulnerable people who have kind of what I like to call, weak minds. Don't know if you guys know what I mean by that but thats how I see it.

Most of the best PC games were released around (before and just after) the new millennium. Like Baldur's Gate series, Fallout series, Starcraft, Diablo 1&2, Unreal Tournament, Quake 1-2-3, Max Payne, I mean, the list goes on and on.

i really liked WoW initially, but like the folks here said..it gets old fast. d2 is something that you'll play..then go away for a bit..then come back again. I don't think i'll go back to WoW
