upping arreat helm!!

I've just upgraded a normal arreats face but the def didn't increase - why?

Now I'm a Lem+Ko short, and have a higher clvl + str requirement guardian crown - I'm sad

as far as i remember now its a little gamble:

uniques spawn with max possible base def on this itemclass.
( the def on helms varies when u find them in white color.)

when u use the upgrade recip the base def on this class is calculated new for the elite version and u might end with the lowest available def for it. i am not talking about the %def on the arreat of course.

Any item with a percentual bonus to defense will have base defense = max+1. A Harlequin Crest doesn't get a % bonus, for example, so its base defense varies.

still don't quite understand guys - can you elaborate on a bit more pls!

does that mean upping gore ridders may generate similar results - potentially similar def + higher clvl/str?

OK this is how I understand it works.

Say an elite unique item has base defense of 100-200. It gets 100% enhanced defense as one of it's properties. Since it gets a % enhanced defense, the base defense is automatically max +1, so this particular item has 201 base defense. The 100% defense gives it 402. You decide to upgrade it. The elite version of the item has base defense of 180-280. The upgraded item doesn't use the max +1 defense that the item had. Instead, it's picked at random (so the 100% gets applied to the 180-280 defense) Lets say that when you upgrade, the random base defense you get is 201. You end up with the same defense as you had before, but with higher requirements.
