Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

I've been moving at a snail's pace... Slapdash has done Hellforge (received an Infernal Torch, Ort Rune, and Perfect Emerald - why couldn't it have been Topaz, why?) and is waiting at the WP before entering Diablo's Lair. Didn't level in all that maggot bashing! I'm nervous about Diablo, frankly, but am determined! :)

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Pete had a scary start in Nihlathak´s garden. My greed prevented me from destoying any corpses. More than once, those darn skeletons found Pete when he was cowering in a corner. Luckily, no Charges hit those times, and I could send them off with Terror. The merc and the golem had a huge pack each surrounding them.

I had brought The Spirit Shroud with me, which was a good thing. It goes a lot quicker for the merc to defeat Nilly if the merc has CBF.

The last ice caves had some nasty bosses. Revive is a godsend in those fights. The OW from Riphook was very useful to bring down the bosses faster.

Ancients were quite troublesome. I restarted the fight three times (two merc deaths). On the fourth attempt, I managed to teleport (using staff charges) away from the Extra Strong Korlic and Holy Freeze Madawc. Only wimpy Magic Resistant Talic was around. He got defeated, and then I lucked out and the merc faced Korlic outside the HF influence area (golem kept Madawc busy). With the occasional hit under Life Tap, Drus could kill the quite hard-hitting Korlic. Then Madawc was not much trouble.

One of Pete´s toughest tests in NM came at the start of WSK level 1. A boss pack of spawners, plus some Zealots and Defilers. Worms with worms inside them, en masse, oh my!

WSK level 3 took forever against imps, huge hordes of Flayer blowdarters and massive packs of Doom Knights. Drus suffered a lot of IM deaths. That´s OK, it´s just money...

With Rattlecage equipped on the merc, and CG + Decrepify, I wasn´t worried about the Baal fight. Once we got into position, Baal got really "dumbed-down" by the slowing. The occasional flamethrower on the merc was all he could accomplish. Spirit Forge unique Linked Mail was the only slightly interesting drop from him.

Cow level next. Red portal started in a corner, and it was really busy close to it. Three boss packs: one Extra Fast, one HF and one Cursed! Drus died and I fled head over heels. Luck was smiling on Pete, because he found a large quiet place. It was quite OK from there.

Now followed some amazing MF luck. A grailer dropped, and not just any grailer, it was possibly the very best item that could have dropped! I knew about this item (many guides recommend it) but I did not know its abilities. That thing is just obscene. How the heck is a rare head ever going to compete with that?

On the other side of the Farm, a number of cows later, this dropped. Nearly useless for Pete (2400-something gold!? You gotta be kidding me...), but another grailer for me. Unbelievable...

Having reached Hell, I had quite some fiddling with gear to do. First of all, I sold my 140+ items worth >30k. Then I put together some gear with lots of resists and +life. I also found a decent +2 skills wand with some small resist bonuses in my "valuable crap" stash.

Character screen looks like this at the start of Hell. More about the gear in my status report coming later.

Conqueror Pete the Necromancer and Drus the Barbarian merc, level 74, Hell Blood Moor next.

@Butzull and Rhia: congrats on the good progress.

@buraz: Ouch!
That´s gotta be annoying - when you have defeated something much harder before...

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

jiansonz,

Wow, great progress, my char has been put on hold for quite a while as of now, in the middle of getting a new apartment and getting everything ready to move! fun fun....

But that has to be the best drop you could have gotten! I really enjoy reading the updates everyone! Good luck and keep it up!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Jiansonz, what /players did you do Cows on?

Love reading the update! :)

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Jiansonz, what /players did you do Cows on?

/players 5. I did not trust my ability to handle huge mobs on a higher players setting, and the XP you gain in the cow level at clvl 74 is really low. I figured /p5 was a good compromise - the no-drop risk is much lower than on /p1.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Thanks! I've never really run Cows ever except to go in out of curiosity with a finished character. (Laughed and laughed at the Moo's) I think on these single pass characters, I'll definitely try it out. Of course, Slapdash has to survive Normal first!

I'm determined to face Diablo on Wednesday and live! :)

Congrats on reaching Hell (not that I expected anything less from you...)

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Well done all! Especially you, Jiansonz. It sounds like you had good luck all through the tournament with your character, I hope it keeps up and guides you through Hell.

As for me, I won't be playing much with old Scarface. He has safely butchered Andariel, and is now in Lut Gholein, but I don't expect much action, seeing as how I game a lot less these days anyways.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Whew! I finally got the courage to go into the Chaos Sanctuary. To be honest, I put it at /p5 and it still took a good long time! Fortunately, it's a nice big area so I could set up Charge chains pretty easily. Lord De Seis with Conviction was easier than I expected mostly due to his only having a few Doom Knights with him. The Venom Lord pack was much more difficult with extra fast/strong.

Diablo himself was tedious and my merc died twice but only on returning after TPing back to get more potions (heh.. had to do this three times!) and when we entered, I got bone prison and she died immediately. But once I got her set up, it was just a matter of downing potions while Slapdash tanked and the rogue did a touch of damage. ;)

He dropped nothing but rares for other classes. :( Oh and he got yet another point in Cold Resist for his troubles.

So now Slapdash is exploring Harrogath!

Slapdash, level 34 Paladin, Harrogath

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Hey everyone, after a long break from diablo 2 I have decided to return. The last and only tourny I played in was the Green with Envy II tournament which i really enjoyed. Hopefully I will enjoy this one just as much

Keeping with the Random theme my random name generator means im playing with Lottie an Assassin with a Act III cold merc. Glad I avoided some of the other classes whom im not familiar with i.e Druid.

Ill be playing Hardcore v 1.12 ill update with posts and screenshots as i progress, good luck all

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

The Story

Scarface finally managed to reach Lut Gholein, and he gladly said goodbye to Warriv and the nasty brutish camel that had carried him.

He slowly ambled through the city, taking in the sights. But he forgot that he himself was quite a spectacle to behold. More and more of the girls he saw started to look upset and pointed at him, and finally he heard some sort of stampede a street away. When he reached the square, he just saw a large cloud, with the occasional girlish bare leg sticking out, and it was moving in the general direction of the palace.
Scarface felt uncomfotably certain that this rapid trek had a lot to do with him, a supiciion turned into certainty when the guard rudely barred his way. The lord tried to smoothtalk it a bit, talking about troubled times, but Scarface had heard enough. He meandered miserably through the streets, now so devoid of female life. Then he saw another woman, and she was sobbing.

Scarface snapped.

"Allright! I know I'm not very pretty to look at! I know I look like the bastard love child from Andariel and Diablo! But you people don't have to rub it in every time I pass! I'm on your side, dammit!"
The woman looked up, her face flushed with anger: "You clot! You dunce! I don't care about you one way or another! My fair husband and son have been taken by some disease ridden devilspawn in the sewers. And to add insult to injury, it seems that this devilspawn's uglier brother is here mocking me!"
Scarface flushed, and the felt a bit ashamed. At least he lived, but this poor woman's family was dead.
"How about I seek him out and kill him a little bit for you?"
"The thing is dead already!"
"Oooh, that's alright. By the time I'm through, it'll be dead again. And not rise up. Promise!"

The woman seemed somewhat happy with that, and Scarface was happy too. He had a mission now. All he had to do was check out the local mercha...
"Stand still! Stand still, you foul fiend! I will rip the flesh from your evil bones and..."
Scarface wheeled about and faced a rather angry woman with fire in her eyes and a weapon in her hand.
"No, no, wait, I fight evil. I'm not eviil myself! Ask Warriv! Ask Cain!"
The woman lowered her weapon: "That old coot? So you are the one he was talking about. He said it was a good thing his eyes were failing him, because he was forced to deal with you so often, and he was afraid he couldn;t keep his food inside. From the looks of it, he was understating your ugliness..."

Scarface sighed and sat down: "You desert people are supposed to be the soul of civil behavior. Instead, I have been received as if I'm the leprous offspring of Andariel."
"You're a druid, right? Perhaps you should walk through this city shapeshifted. It can only be an improvement in appearance."
"Oh, go hump a zombie. Do you have some decent weaponry?"
"Not interested. In humping zombies that is. I have a standing agreement with Meshif, and that really is none of your business anyways. As far as weapons goes, feel free to look around. Elzix also has some stuff. And Drognan deals in those sceptres. I see you are wielding one as well. They are our turf, you know."
"I can see why. Like you, the weapon is blunt and has no finesse."
She smiled: "Like me, it is most sought after by kings. The only people looking for you are probably trying to find the 7 greatest horrors on the world."
"Good, they can find two here. My face and your wit. Now show me the weapons!"

There was little that appealed to Scarface, but Elzix had some very nice gloves.
Wearing his new clothes, Scarface went down into the sewers. As expected, they were old, dusty, smelly and filled with bones. The only distrubing part was that most of theose bones were moving around. Luckily enough, Gris had enough boulders in his backpocket to deal with everything he encountered. Finally, deep deep down, he found a very evil mummy. It had a tarrible case of halitosis, you could see the green fumes walming out of the orifice Chrysantheum assumed was his mouth. He felt not particularly inclined to smell that breath up close, so he more or less bouldered the thing around, until it got bored with the concept and died... again.
One of those black walking boneheaps dropped a nice green amulet, apparently some poor dude named Civerb had wondered in the wrong part of the sewers on his night off. Oh well, it looked like a decent thing to have, so Scarface stashed it.
Next, he took his hard earned money and started gambling with Elzix, mainly focusing on Morning Stars, Flails and Circlets. He finally found a rare flail with some cold damage and mana steal, so he decided to use it. With an almost full stash, Scarface decided to sleep in one of the rooms so conveniently vacated by those squeamish girls. He didn't really want to go out into the desert, but according to Cain, those scrolls he found pointed to the existence of a nice staff he should try to find. And a cube. Scarface had no idea what a cube was, but listening to the man's explanations made his head hurt, so he just let it be. Eventuslly, he was bound to bring the proper item home...

TheStats
The very first thing Scarface found at Elzix was a set of gloves with 28% CR, 25% MF. Granted, it wasn't LR, which would have been better, but Chris wasn;t complaining such great stats. He also shopped a light belt with 14% LR and 66% GF a bit later on.
One level up on the second lvl of the sewers netted him 1 strength, and 2 each in vitality and Dex. The better weapons are out of reach for his strngth, even with the +10 bonus from the set item buckler. But that was ok, both the flail and the sceptre/grandsceptre, and the morning star were within his strength scope, and the warhammer was just 2 above his strength with the +10 bonus.

The sewers were fairly uneventful, although the fire resistance shrines (2 of them) really made a difference. it turned out radament was easier (by far) to kill then a hero archer with minions and Extra strong. Scarface found a tir rune, which means he just needs a nice Superior flail with 2 os to make Steel in.

The two skillpoints both went into the summon tree, the first opened up Heart of the Wolvernie (nice), the second strengthened the Carrion Vine (not so nice).
I found another blue druid pelt, this one had +2 to lycanthropy, +2 to Werebear and +1 to Feral Rage. So now I have three in my stash, one with +1 to molten boulder (skill of choice), one with +2 Werebear and +1 oak sage (used for summoning the thing) and the third one will be used when I switch into Werwolf fighting style.

Here is the skillpoint list so far:
Elemental -
Firestorm 1
Molten Boulder 4
Fissure 1

Shape Shifting -
Werewolf - 4
Lycanthrophy 4
Feral Rage 1

Summoning
Poison Creeper - 3
Oak Sage - 1
Carrion Vine - 2
Heart of Wolverine - 1

Stats
Str 41, Dex 50, Vit 50, En 39.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

@StevehRogers: Welcome to the tournament, and good luck!

I will be out on some botanical adventures in other parts of Sweden for more than a week now, so don´t expect any updates from me during that time.

It´s been going really well for Pete and Drus. It´s one of the strongest character/merc setups I have ever played. They dominated Act I Hell on /players 3! And Drus´ has been getting a much better weapon. Twice....

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Hmm, "botanical adventures"...curiosity kills the JayeM. Sounds like a druidish thing for a necromancer to be doing.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Some small progress in Act II. I managed to acquire the Horadric Cube. Since I had plenty of chipped topazzes from Act 1, plus a normal topaz (two gem shrines), I immediately started to powershop for a 3os breastplate, and quit when I got it.
The hollow ones weren't too hard, due to their mummy status they don't deal with fire damage very well after all.

I made Steel in a normal 2 os Flail, but that's ok, it's a definite improvement over the sceptre I had before.
I'm lvl 23 now. Stats for lvl 22 were +3 Str, +2 ene, skill point opened up the Werebear, and lvl 23 gave me 1 Str, 1 Dex, 1 ene and 2 Vit, and another point in Poison Creeper.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Ok so heres my progress so far.

Act 1 was played at players 8 throughout and was reasonable apart from some nasty boss packs and one of those fire monsters in the lower levels of the catacombs who decided to run across the majority of the map away from me. bbviously I followed committed to finishing him off and in the process attracting at least 3 different mobs.

Andy dropped a Ruby and I accidentally clicked a gem shrine ( the only one ) when I had nothing which netted me a chipped sapphire.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

I'll join in. Rolled myself a sorceress who will be escorted by a fire rogue. Will update once I make some real progress.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Another update from a place without my writeup, but oh well, the detailed listings will come soon!

Fate and Fiona are level 57 and have reached the Arcane Sanctuary. Still travelling along pretty well doing full clear /players 8.

The test of my resolve to do all full clears will be soon when I get to the Canyon of the Magi. Generally I hate doing all the tombs, particularly because I don't have any area of effect skills (that are effective at /players 8 at least), and no reliable method of corpse disposal assuming unravellers will abound. My cold rogue merc and my own minimal added cold damage usually result in me needing to kill skeletons 3-4 times each before they shatter! Urgh!

However, the /players 8 full clears started to show benefit when in a far-flung reach of the palace where I seldom (if ever) tread, a Fal dropped. So now I have the highest rune in obedience should I chose to go down that path! :)

Generally the stats are falling pretty evenly. I certainly have runs on one stat over a few consecutive levels, but that is usually followed by a bit of a famine, so overall it's pretty well evening out. I think Str and Dex are mid-high 80s, Vit is in the 90s as is Ene.

Skills are all over the place, and I have to admit, I've been hanging out for any one of 5 or 6 to come along each level, and they REALLY aren't. In fact, after my early luck with Shadow Warrior, luck has deserted me in the skills stakes. Talk about far-fetched odds, in 4 consecutive skill rolls, with 27 "open" skills, I rolled Dragon Talon and Dragon Claw (or whatever the lowest 2 "finishing skills" leading towards Dragon Flight are called) for ALL 4 allocations! I think looking back a fraction further it was 5 out of 7 to those two skills, which are absolutely worthless...unusable and provide no synergies to anything! *sob*

But, anyway...as long as the show goes on, there is always hope. The Shadow Warrior is very fragile, so I actually find myself having to wait for the casting delay in some fights already. I'll definitely have to hunt down some significant +skills backup equipment for when I cast him (or Shadow Master, who already survives longer at slvl 2 compared to Warrior=slvl 5). Hopefully I can make it to act 5 for a big claw shopping session.

I did have a real situation in the Maggot Lair. I couldn't get into the room to get the staff. I couldn't kill the spawners quickly enough. I tried many options.
* I shopped for a long time trying to get something with TK, but couldn't find anything.
* I used teleport to go to the chest but aborted after a couple of tries because it was so overpopulated around it that I couldn't press on the chest to open it.
* I shopped a Blizzard staff, which did thin out the room somewhat, but not quite enough, and the 150k repair cost wasn't going to see me able to get in there (even with a teleport in after thinning with blizzard, which I tried).

In the end, I pressed on further into the desert and got the amulet first, hoping to find an item which would help me get in there and finish them off.

Finally, I had a brain-wave. I was still on /players 8. Theoretically, if I lowered it to /players 1, as I killed off the /players 8 spawned critters, the new spawns should be easier to kill. Sure enough, this simple solution worked, and after an epic battle, I was able to finish off the room and kill Coldworm and take home the loot. Really it was such a simple solution, it just took my brain a while to arrive there! ;)

So we keep on keeping on. Good luck to all continuing their journeys of chance!

Butz. :coffee:

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

I'm joining in, rolled an Assassin, who's going to be with an Act 3 cold merc (wow lucky, though I wanted to see a different element for once).

Den of Evil done (I'm level 6 now) and I'm starting to look like a rather wierd martial artist, lots of points in energy, almost none in strength and a bit in dex and vit. Skills so far are 2 tiger strike, 1 fists of fire, 2 claw mastery (all good so far) and 1 psychic hammer (gah).
