Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Stuff has been happening while I wasn't here : First off, welcome Mortahi and Fast Eddie has the right of it. Any item that drops and doesn't fill an equipment slot can be used freely. That includes charms. And, thinking I am a dolt for missing an obvious one, it also includes ARROWS and BOLTS. While those in fact DO fill an equipment slot, they are the means to make a bow/xbow work. Feel free to use any stack of arrows/bolts you find/shopped as needed.

@Thomh - It seems I was wrong and that the tornadoes still kick a$$ huh? Good luck against the ancients though!

@Mursilis - I can imagine the tombs must be a royal pain Mursilis! Good luck in Kurast, and thanks for updating the table

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Jack was feeling pretty confident today, and decided to keep playing on players8. (Only Diablo x 2, Duriel in Normal and the ancients have been killed at lower settings). He quickly moved though the Crystalline Passage, Glacial Trail and the Frozen Tundra. Went into the Icy Cellar to finish the last Super unique before the ancients. A cursed Hell Temptress pack was the first thing that Jack saw. Fazel died immediately(as he keep doing in most battles :() Eventually Jack managed to kill the nasty pack and faced the super unique with the coolest name. That was easy and his drop was nothing interesting.

Jack went to town and stocked up on potions and changed his gear for the acients test. They were attacked at players1, and died within 2 minutes. 2 Greater Mana potions was all they wanted to be quiet.

The WSK lvl1 and 2 on the other hand was horrible. Frenzytaurs, OKs and lots of poison attacks made Jack go to town a lot. Lvl 3 was a joke, flayers 0 - hurricane 10000.

The Throne room was packed with OKs and Frenzytaurs again, which was horrible. The only curse my merc will live more than a few seconds through is weaken. Everything else cost a town portal or a ressurrection. Baal`s minions didn`t give Jack much trouble, even though Lister spawned with cursed. I was really scared of that, so I decided to split the pack and take them down in groups of two. Worked out pretty well, except I had to fight Lister and two of his friends at once. They went down quickly enough without too much trouble.

Baal was a nice change of pace. I had equipped my merc with the Woestave that dropped from normal Baal, so the lord of destruction did nothing at all.

His drop was amusing. Nothing like getting two set items you already have. The war belt was ok, but I am not going to dump points into strength just to wear that.

The moo moo farm was not nice to Jack as he kept on playing at players8. Turns out that was a mistake, because some really fast cows smashed the merc in seconds while my damage was barely noticeable. Jack ran back to the town portal and did not enter again.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Congrats on making Conqueror Thomh!

As for Anheg, he made it past Andariel. I guess there is a first for everything, and I can say that I cleaned out all of act 1 with the 2 weapons dropped by corpsefire. I bet none of YOU had to do that!

And my patience was put to the test. When I entered lvl 3, I encountered... A stone skinned the Banished boss. GREAT! Stone skin sucks a lot with low melee dam. output. I needed some breathing space to tackle these one on one, so I decided to dash into a hallway at random and make some room to use taunt and howl and bash and what not to kill the minions one by one. Good idea, bad luck.
I ran headfirst into ANOTHER banished hero, this one Fire Enchanted. Not nearly as bad as stoneskin, but I needed breathing space, not more vampires! During the hassle of trying to get a few of them separated, a THIRD hero was triggered. A Cold Enchanted Banished...
If I ever said Normal Act 1 should be doable, I take those words back. It was insane for me and the merc. She never died, but came terribly close tod ying numerous times. Same went for me. I drank rivers of reds and oceans of blues. I ran around like one of those chickens in the encampment when you startle them, with about as much effect.

However, I managed to find a hero/minion clean hallway with some ghouls, killed those while under fire, and then slowly proceeded to lure minions in the dead end hallway with taunt and massacre them with javelins and arrows. I FINALLY pulled through after about 15 minutes of fighting, which is a lot in normal act 1...

After that, no more heroes apart from a mutlishotting afflicted somewhere. He died easily. Actually, everything else died easily, including Andariel. After you just had a huge battle, everything following it up seems easy enough :)

On Andy's lvl I got a scare when seeing a holyfreeze hero in the tightly packed anteroom, but it turned out to be a ghoul hero who paid me scant attention. After everything there died, the hero died easily as well (jay javelins!) Buy some antidotes, drink them, give some to the mercenary, trigger andy and proceed by slaughtering her just a little bit with a crappy shortsword.
The main adjective here is just a little bit, since I really did insignificant damage to her. Good thing I had an inventory loaded with light healing pots, I simply went on blunting my sword on her spikes and other bodyparts until she died from bloodloss I guess. Either that or boredom, but die she did.
Her drop was nothing spectacular, but certainly functional for me, with a decent sabre (lightning dam, poison dam, added dam from itself and even more dam vs undead) a twohanded sword with decent damage and mana leech(boith with 1 mana after each kill and 4% mana steal) and a rare ringmail with 3 crappy mods, but seeing as how I was wearing a studded leather of selfrepair, it was an improvement nevertheless :)

I shoved the rare bardiche I found earlier in my new mercs (KAsim, defensive) hands, and am ready to tackle act 2.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Thomh. Well done so far. Don't give up yet, hell will be no easy road (i guess i can speak from experience :\)....but i did get their with Hoax my basically normal Windy Druid, which is like your character, except yours is alot better as you have Hurricane. Good luck in Hell

@Merlin. thanks for the welcome and for spelling my name wrong :p, good luck with your barb .

Well after what seemed to be the most grueling process in picking a character, i finally decided on making a Pally. So allow me to introduce Flex the Dragoon based pally who will major in Holy Shock and Fanaticism. I also have some interesting ideas with the spare points (as this build really finishes at clvl 74), anyway i will explain more about that later.

Anyway i managed to get underway with Flex and made huge progress up to the Cold Plain Waypoint . Corpsefire's drop was crap in general but he did drop a magical hand axe with 2 to max damage. It was an improvement from his short sword so i guess the drop wasn't bad after all. He also dropped a magical throwing knife with 1-3 lighting damage but i decided to hold off my throwing career for a little while longer until more desirable drops come along.

I will post a more in depth update at the end of the act as i usually do. It shouldn't take as long as it has been for me recently because my school holidays are in 2 days, so i will have quite a bit of time in between my study program (which i have to do for preparation for my end year exams) to play.

@Morathi: You made a guardian without hurricane? That is sick. GL with the pally.

Jack was taken one quest further and I began to experiment with the player settings. The Stony field was filled with Hungry dead, Carvers and Skeleton Archers, and I went for it with players 8. Did the same thing in the Underground Passage as there were only melee monsters and Skeleton Archers there as well. Unfortunately I forgot to lower the settings before the dark wood. I found the waypoint at once, and Woodfist shortly afterwards. Needless to say, he had to be parked and Jack ran away to get the scroll. I will lower the settings to 1 and kill the giant tree next session. Griswold was taken down on players5, and showed me the most frustrating drop so far. Guess how many sockets that Tresher had? GUESS!! A little hint, I have Ral, Tir, Tal and Sol. Somewhere along the way a Raven Frost dropped as well. Although it is quite useless for this tournament I`ll actually mule it off instead of selling it.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Morathi: You made a guardian without hurricane? That is sick. GL with the pally.

Ahhhh......not exactly...... He only made it to one of the underground caves and died to a freak of a archer unique. And hence why i was like (:\) when i said i had personal experience.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Jack will not become a guardian either. While he was cursed from the puppy of doom in Jail lvl2, he ran into a bosspack of Fanaticism Enchanted, Extra Strong Skeleton Archers. They one-hit KO poor Jack. Since I had not cleared everything behind me, I was sort of trapped, and even though I managed to dodge the missiles for a pretty long time the outcome was pretty much inavoidable. Windys doesn`t like Archers, that`s for sure.

At least the druid was incredibly fun to play, and I think I will enter with another char. Meet Trude the Assassin. I love assassins and will probably play something I have never done before, progress will be a lot slower this time around because of RL, though:)

I`ll update the table with Jack`s final score and my new emperor when I`m done with act1.

In the meantime, have fun everybody. And good luck to Mursillis in Hell.

Edit@Merlin or anyone else: Do you have a skill layout for a phoenix striker. I have never played one and have no idea what to do after the obligatory 20 PS, 20 DC, 20 synergy something, except one in each of the one-point wonders. Do you pump Claw Mastery for AR since I was horrified to notice that there were no AR bonus on PS? Basically, I am a complete noob and all the things mentioned above might be wrong as well:) This might be a copycat issue, but the build seems fun enough, although challenging.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Thomh. Ouch....sorry to see you go :(. Very well done getting as far as you did anyway, it was a great achievement . It is quite strange really because your druid's death was very similar to mine. Although mine was in one of the underground caves it was to an archer unique with similar mods to yours (She also killed me in 2-3 shots). Anyway about the skill distribution for a Pheonix Striker, i suggest you read this guide (http://www.purediablo.com/guides/news.php?id=599). It should cover everything you need to know.

About my own progress Flex is going along nicely and rescued Cain without any trouble. I will push on tonight and will update properly at the end of act.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Thomh :( Bad luck! But you came far, that's got to count for something!
As far as Phoenix Striker goes, the beauty of the build lies in the versatility. It was my idea(especially since the shadow warrior/master are barred in this tournament) to max out PS, the lightning and the fire synergy and the dragon talon rather then the claw (I suppose dragon claw is nice, but you need to invest in weapon block as well, and you are bound to find more shields then katars in this tournament)

Poor Jack :tombstone: I really thought he'd pass me rather soon.

Those cursed bosses scare the heck out of me, that's why I won't go anywhere cursed and instead TP back to town to clear it out. Breaks up any momentum I might have had, but worth it in the end.

That pack reminds me of the cursed, might enhanced ghost pack I saw earlier. It was coupled with a champion pack of the same ghosts. Merc died instantly and I just ran screaming. No shame in living to fight another day.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

So, I took Anheg and cleaned out the sewers. Funny enough, I found both a Black HAck hero and a Black Hawk hero. Those are close, name wise! (Not monster type wise though, the hawk a huntress, the hack a Sand Raider).

Radament dropped a brutal long bow of fire, which is my best bow drop so far, and of course utterly useless now that I have no sister of the sightless eye to use it :) Well, I cleaned out the desert and the tomb there as well, Creeping Feature had some mroe items hidden in those wraps around his body. A rare composite bow, a Voulge of Worth, a Spiked Club of Amplify Damage and a Sturdy belt. I kept the last two as superunique drops. I'll cube the belt into a merc weapon as soon as I get the Cube, and the spike club might be a replacement once I can't contribute actively to the damage anymore, since the amp dam. will help my merc a lot.

@Mursilis - What? You choose cowardice and a prolonged life over a brave and useless death???

...

You chose wisely... :)

@Morathi - It's about 80 posts in the thread I think, perhaps longer.

For any cube recipe to be valid to wear, at most 1 of the ingredients needs to be both
a) a drop from a superunique and
b) to be able to fill an equipment slot on its own. So that means a weapon, a shield, a helm, a body armor, a belt, gloves, boots, or a ring or amulet.

So in the example recipe, I may create that polearm if I can provide either a belt, a kris or a staff as a legit superunique drop. Not if all I can provide is a diamond, even if it dropped from a superunique.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Merlin about that cubing thing, am i right in saying that in order to cube a Savage Polearm (for example), all the ingredients need to come from super uniques? I guess the same goes for crafting etc...

You may have touched on this but i don't have the time to go through and have a look.

@Mursilis - What? You choose cowardice and a prolonged life over a brave and useless death???

Tactical retreat is the official term. That pack would have been the death of me, no doubt about it. I have no qualms about locking them behind a door and finding another path that isn't quite so dangerous. It's a good thing I'm not concerned about full clears and instead go where I please and kill what I want.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Hi all, I'm not dead!
I was busy, cause it was the period of recruitment for schools (succesfully passed ^^)
So, an update will come soon.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Good to hear betoka! On both counts (passing for school and not being dead!)

Another shortish update then. I managed to rough up Bloodwitch a little, and also Beetleburst a tad later. Of course, Bloodwitch didn't die easily. She and her purring band of fickle, feisty, feline vixens managed to take about 180 of my life points away in one set of sabre strokes, at the same moment my mercenary made Kitten Kebab on the end of his BArdiche with some Juicy Bloodwitch meat. Of course, after being mangled like that, I was unable to find any items on her body, but her loot made up for it. Well, one part of it, since her first drop was an ethereal brutal spear of the bat. Not at all bad really, but certainly not fantastic... :) However, her other drop was a ring of charged bolt. How convenient, and just before finding the cube!

Since my stash was already pretty full, I decided to save and exit at that point, and get the sturdy belt I had found earlier. I shopped for a kris and a staff, got a chipped diamond and the sturdy belt from Creeping Feature, put them in the cube and prayed it would be something better then a bardiche or a voulge...
And it was. Out popped a Savage Poleaxe of Blight. How nice!

The lost oasis was filled with death beetles, and with little to no Lightning resist, I couldn't really tank them. Luckily enough, they usually were one hit killed by my merc. How nice :)
Along the way to the waypoint i found a nice rare jewel with some CR and +8 max dam on it, and 2 other semi-useful mods. Nice if I get something with an open socket.
Beetleburst was a very friendly fellow. He died swiftly enough, and dropped a nice rare helm and a throwing axe. Better yet, he had a nice ring and another throwing axe hidden in his appendix! Wasn't that sweet? The helm had some decent mods, like 5% ctc Frost Novam 14% CR and 19% PR, and +6 to energy as well! Of course, the Frost nova is a mixed blessing, but I reckon the defensive value makes up for the occasional shattered corpse... Next stop, Coldwurm

EDIT:
The Maggot Lair is emptied. Coldwurm dropped heavy boots of self repair, which promptly replaced my boots of self repair. His other drop was a jagged broadsword of the Bat, which was stashed. I also found a Diggler here. I don't remember who said it, but that is a pretty sweet weapon, no matter how you look at it. 30%IAS and ITD on a fast weapon equals good in my book, and the 2 high resists are icing on the cake, especially the fire. Nevertheless, it was stashed.

Savage Poleaxe, nice Merlin  Guess you'll be a cheerleader for a while, watching the merc do most of the damage.

Enkidu made some nice progress through the Kurast Jungles, and the merc stayed alive more often than not this time around, which was a fun suprise. Of course whenever a cursed/might/fanaticism bosspack was encountered the merc died, but that's just expected at this point. No extremely difficult situations were encountered this session. Did have a double bosspack of flayers that required some delicate handling. One was might enhanced, the other....fanaticism. Ended up leading the minions away 2-3 at a time until the bosses were split up and knocked off.

Unfortunately my best finds were not from SUs, but still interesting anyway. Both the Thundergods Vigor and Cerebus' Bite fell within minutes of each other, in the Flayer Dungeon if I recall correctly. Cerebus is a grailer so that's going off in a stash, but Tgods could technically be used for my last personalization quest (if I can get that far), so I'm holding onto that for now.

The Flayer Dungeon had me a tad confused for a moment. I've always had the chest appear in a corner, so this map threw me for a loop and for a moment I thought I was going to have to reroll the area as the chest didn't spawn.

Decided to stop at Travincal, but have to go back to do the Kurast sewers. I have the Upper Kurast WP right next to stairs down so no worries about rerunning anything.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

You must be laughing yourself silly Mursilis, finding l33t items left and right, and hearing meget wild over a savage poleaxe :)
Ah well, as long as I am having fun with it... Oh, and congrats on the Thundergods... and the Cerebus bite, allthough I have never found either :)

Anheg has progressed further. No, wait. Let me rephrase that.
Kalim progressed further, with Anheg trailing behind him like a scared little puppy fondling every corpse he can find. Such a glorious career! I think Anheg missed his true career, his fascination for corpses would make him a first class necromancer...

Ooh, progress report. Well, The lost city was quite a hassle. With those strnagling potion throwing cats, Marauders and Plgaue zombies I was pretty much blue all the time, with a very green and always shrinking lifebulb. However, it was nowhere really dangerous.
Found Dark Elder almost immediately, and his drop was decidedly unnoteworthy. A doubleaxe of Craftmanship and a balanced knife of the bat.
So that meant entering the Viper temple. No guardians this time around, Embalmed and both Claw vipers and Salamanders. My mercenary turned into a punching bag in a few rooms, but he was never in danger of dying. I was a tad scared of Fangskin, but that proved to be unnecessary. Wnet to the left, cleaned it out there, and once I triggered minions and saw his light moving closer, I ran the other way around. Fangskin followed me, but the rest of his pack didnt. I guess they were molting or something. Anyways, it took about four pokes with the poleaxe before Fangskin decided to call it a day.
He did carry 4 items, one a chipped emerald, the other three a large shield of charged bolt, which I didn't pick. The other two were a viridian hard leather armor of Frost Nova(nice), and what do you know, another ring! Ok, cubed it into an amulet and now have legit fills for all three slots. I will try and cube some decent jewelry at lvl 27.

Into the palace, which was the usual pain. A couple of blunderbore bosses, but nothing frightening. Fire Eye was difficult, because he kept retreating into packs of other monsters. Finally, he ran out of monsters, and shortly thereafter, out of lifepoints.
4 items, nothing terribly useful. A fine composite bow, a chipped diamond. My picks were chain gloves of light and a Scythe of Measure.

Arcane Sanctuary. I like this place, because it's so easy. You have to work really hard to be surrounded here, so the merc is a very effective meatshield. And the finds were good... An ethereal Bloodfists unique heavy gloves, a Nagelring and an Angelic sickle. I was a bit hyped when I finally found the Summoner(he was residing in the arm with the red portals, as he usually does for me). His drop was a bit of an anticlimax, but quite good when compared with the other bosses so far. A Chainmail of Balance was a nice armor for the mercenary, and an ethereal septic yew wand of the bat with +3 Bone wall, +2 Bone Armor, and +1 terror. Actually, not a bad wand for certain Necromancer builds...

Well, Tagged the final waypoint anbd decided to write the update.

Laughing? No. Frustrated? Yes. Granted I've found several nice items, but pretty much all of them were from normal monsters, not the SUs, so unusable. Case in point, my current gloves give 8% FR and 5% AR. Haven't found a better pair yet off of SUs, while normal monsters have dropped countless pairs, including Sigons. Can't even craft a pair as the right items haven't fallen from SUs.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Such is the risk in a tournament that restricts useable items... You did manage to get very far in Hell difficulty with your setup, so it can't suck too much... :)

So, cleaned out the canyon, found a set of pooncers and some crappy gear left by a dude named Dimoak, a Hew he called it.
Since I hit 27 once I cleaned out the canyon, I decided to get constructive on the cubing. Got a lionbranded amulet, and a hexing amulet of amelioration, which were both cubed away of course. Also cubed out an amulet with 14% MF. But what did I keep? Well, one of my first finds was a ring with 5 life regeneration and 12 LR. Next, quite a long session before I landed an amulet that seemed a bit decent, at least decent enough for now. +8 to mana and +3 min. dam. Not masterful, but not really bad. However, it didn't take too long before I cubed the third ring into a Coral Amulet of Charged Bolt. 30% LR is a very useful mod, so that one is my current amulet of choice. That left me with the leftovers of rings and amulets in my stash. I cubed all of that away, but the end result was a +36 AR ring. Ah well, gives me an item to start my next cubing session with :) Tomorrow I'll tackle the tombs.
