@Eddie :( :( :( I'll miss the quetz.... Seriously. Well, good luck with whatever else you do, and if you ever feel the urge to avenge the quetz curse, feel free to rejoin!

@Duke - Nice drops man!

As for Hettar, when I cleaned out the Lost City and didn't find Dark Elder (happened to me once before... I think it has to do with a certain structure he always appears in, it didn't spawn on the map) I had enough. So I restarted the barb, in the hopes I'll get a full set of Superuniques this time.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@All - Meet Anheg, another barb. :) Both names derive from the same series of Fantasy books by the way.

I just had a fairly large session, in which I went in one sitting through the entire dark wood, and opened the portal to Tristram. I was sort of forced to quit, since not only was my stash filled to the rafters, so was my inventory. The goings were good however.

t started with corpsefire, who was kind enough to drop two rares, both weapons, both still in use by yours truly. One was a rare shortsword with poison dam and +1 mana and lowish damage enhancers, normal ones as well as to undead. The other were rare javelins with some poison damage and phys damage added in.
Next stop, Bishibosh. He provided me with a tangerine sash, as well as another rare short sword, with more phys. damage prowess but no elemental damage.
Blood raven was a disappointment, she dropped two blues, a targe which was sold and a cap of balance, which isn't all that bad really, but I had better drops from her. However, Bonebreaker pulled through and dropped not only a pricey rare short staff, but also Hsaru's Iron Fist. Nice for a barb!
ColdCrow filled my boots and my gloves slot, both with the magical suffic self-repair and nothing else. I made lvl 12 at the start of the stony field, and was lvl 12 still when I found rakanishu. Killed him with a skill shrine active, and find item was a succes!
It netted me a javelin of frost and a Bardiche of worth, which I didn't choose. My choices were a skull cap of light (a bit of defense and more AR for the merc) and a rare bardiche with excellent modifiers vs. undead, and some lightning dam as well. That one might be of use later on, when the short sword wont cut it any longer...
Finally Treehead. I had gained two lvls by the time I fought him, and found another skill shrine, but this time I had to make do with two items. A Sturdy hard leather armor is good though, and a Rare light crossbow with good damage modifiers and added lightning damage ain't nothing to sneeze at at this stage as well...

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Merlin, nice Iron Fist. Bonebreaker is so nice sometimes.

Jack went into the sewers in Lut Gholein and destroy all the undeads living down there. The king of the sewers dropped horribly and I had forgotten what it was before I could put up a TP. Next up was the Creeping Feature. On the journey over to his house Jack found another Amn and Thul, so I have all the runes for a spirit now. That means the personalisation quest for NM is already ready, so I am back went back to my old self with running straight for SUs to see what they drop. I am so incredibly impatient and curious, so full clears is out of the question until Hell(if I should get that far). THen I need to find another thing to personalize, so I have some motivation for killing everything.

To make a long story short. Jack finished off Duriel a while later and headed for Kurast. So far NM has been a big disappointment when it comes to drops. Only three somewhat useful drops from SUs in Lut Gholein. A Shaman`s Antler(+1 Druid Skills) and a rare Mask with 1os. No other useful mods on anyone of them, though. The third one was a Milebrega`s Orb from Kaa. The Mask got socketed with a Flawless Topaz, and given to Haseen. For some strange reason he started to die alot afterwards, but I think I correctly guessed it was due to Jack not being able to run close to enemies anymore. So the slowing effect from Hurricane was not helping the merc. I hired a HFmerc to deal with that problem, but it didn`t help more than a little bit. Well, got to use the gold on something.

The Maggot Lair was a complete pain. Luckily the entrances to each level was really close, so I didn`t have to clear much. Jack had to get next to every monster to be able to hit them with Tornado. A lot of red pots was being used, but eventually he managed to get through it. The other real obstacle was the false tombs. Of course Kaa was in the last one, and I have to say that none of them was fun. A lot of unraveller boss packs in each one of them meant a ton of merc ressurections. It is not easy to hit the skinny things with Tornado, and their magic missiles really hurt. At least Kaa dropped a Milabrega`s Orb, although I don`t think I should be too happy. Jack has got a ton of MF now, but that`s about it. I don`t think he`ll even use the Kite Shield, as the shield he was using seems a lot better.

I really hope the SUs in Kurast is nicer to Jack. And Merlin seems to be right, things are suddenly starting to suck badly now, and I think Jack will have to max twister before Oak Sage to keep up the damage.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Not a bad start for the new barb Merlin. I quickly googled those characters and was surprised that I didn't remember them, admitidly it has been about 4-5 years since I read the Belgariad and the Malloreon. Ishbel also comes from a fantasy novel, a fairly knew one though.

Sorry to hear about that Fast Eddie. :tombstone: Do come back and join us if you get the itch.

Merlin, did you really restart a character because you couldn't find a super unique? Now that's dedication. Personally I was thinking of skipping Ancient Kaa as I know the false tombs are going to be very difficult and he's never dropped anything of worth for me. Granted I have to get to that point first...

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Played another session with Jack, and he still rocks. I blame the problems at the end of act2 on the narrow spaces in the tombs. Even though I said I would not be doing full clears, I was nearly forced to do it on this map. Didn`t venture into the Arachnid Lair, but everything else was cleared and Jack now owns alot of new and wonderful charms. 3 charms with good mods was a welcome addition to his stash. 2 of them was 15+life and +10 mana/12%FHR. The last one had 6%MF and +Mana. The super uniques is still not very cooperative, even though Jack has more than 150% MF(Nearly 200 combined with merc, which kills every SU). Endugu dropped a rare ring with nothing useful but 11% MF, but that is still more than enough for me.

The drops aren`t really that bad, it`s just not caster-friendly. Sabrina`s drop pretty much sums up the drops from the super uniques. Jack will probably do fine a little while longer, but I can`t imagine him lasting long without some FCR or poison resist in Hell. Poison resistance is at -30 at the moment, although I can get it up to -11 if I swap some of the MF equipment. If things get really desperate I can craft a caster amulet or belt to get a couple less frames on my tornadoes, or I can cube a PR amulet. Unfortunately Jack has only found magic belts, and I really want a higher ilvl than the ones I have for a good shot at getting max number of mods on my crafted items.

edit: didn`t see that Fast Eddie lost his char until now. RIP. GL with MFing and all the other stuff you are up to now.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Thomh - I was afraid the Windy might become more difficult later on. As for the rest, I'd urge you to consider doing more thorough clears, and to keep all runes and gems etc. that drops. There are loads of horadric cube formulas out there that can be used to gain proper items, but you need a fair amount of disposables such as gems and runes to mkae full use of them. Nevertheless, excellent progress!

@Mursilis - I wasn't all that happy with my drops so far. Thing is, I went with the barb in part because I rolled one on random.org, but for the most part because of find item. The barbarian is pretty item dependent, especially weaponwise. So I want to maximize all of my drop potential and get decent gear going for later on... I like meleeing, but meleeing with crappy gear is like an open invitation to the Grim Reaper, come the later stages of nightmare and all of hell.

@JCakes - :) I have no clue where Ishbel stems from though, allthough my first thought was Jezebel, the nasty wife of a nasty biblical king(Achab I believe).

Meanwhile, Anheg had a much shorter session before having a full stash again. By the simple expedient of having 8 or so mana potions in my inventory, I am able to use find item on every corpse I create. Sounds tiresome, but consider that it helps with the carver shaman as well! Anyways, this tactic gave me lots of chippies, which were all stashed of course. Tristram was fairly simple really. Griswold came alone and died after an uneventful fight, in which he managed to curse me twice. Big deal. His drop was a plain scimitar and a plain skull cap and a dirk of amplify damage, which isn't all that bad really. Dirks are fast, and amp. dam. can help my mercenary kill things faster come act 2.
So onto the black marsh. It was filled with carver shamans mainly, and some vile archers and brutes as well. Nothing truly hard though, allthough I was careful around the brutes(crazy beasts only net 21 XP the kill by now... certainly not worth the effort it takes to bring them down!). I found a magical preserved head which turned out to have : +3 raise skeleton, +2 skeleton mastery, +1 weaken, 7 LR. Nice for a starting skelliemancer! So I stashed it. I used find item on a carver shaman a little later, when I was mopping up the little corners I missed. Out popped a wolf head with 2 sockets and +3 Werebear, +3 Lycanthropy, +1 Werewolf. Another nice find! And with the two sockets i can make either a lore or a nadir with it (prolly nadir for the CoS.)

Since I also decided to bring a jawbone cap with +2 Sword MAstery, +1 howl and +1 bash, my inventory was starting to fill up. I figured I could clean the hole, make level 16 and then do the countess tower next session. Turned out I found only a few heroes on lvl 1, and 1 carver hero on lvl 2 of the hole, which means I fall 5K XP short of 16, and so probably wont make 17 in the countess tower. Oh well, no biggy. Can't use find item on her carcass anyways.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Started todays session with letting Jack loose in the Sewers, he found Icehawk Riftwing at once and the little flying devil decided to force Jack into full clears again by giving him this. I don`t care if none of the other mods are helpful, it has +2 druid skills and this means I can use the personalization quest on something else than a spirit sword. Even though Jack popped every chest and killed every monster from the Bazaar to Travincal, he didn`t find anything else of value there. The Council was equally uncooperative, but in the durance of hate a Sol dropped from a chest and then another Thul came along for the ride.

The Durance of hate level3 was incredibly difficult with 2 packs of blood lords. both had Stone skin bosses, so they were a real pain. The 3 council members before Mephisto was not that bad, but once again there were a boss pack of Blood lords next to Maffer. They ripped apart Jacks Cyclone Armor in no time and got him down to double digit HP 3 times during the battle. I have no idea what mods the boss had, since I was extremely busy trying to survive:)

Mephisto was a real piece of cake. He decided that the Oak sage was dangerous and tried to melee it most of the time. The Lord of Hatred went down quickly and dropped some cool items.

The highlight was obviously the Bec-de-Corbin:

Stone Stake
Bec-de-Corbin
Two-Hand Damage: 26 to 183
Durability: 28 of 28
Required Dexterity: 81

+7 to Maximum Damage
Cold Resist +7%

Nothing great, but an improvement at least. The ring mail was an Angelic Mantle and the two other uniques was a Skystrike and Langer Briser.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Duke - PTopazz only gives magic find in Helmets and body armor. I'd stick a ral or ort rune in there, depending on which resist is lowest.

@Thomh - Sweet drops there Thomh! The Skystrike is nice as well, esp. for a caster druid. The great thing about the bec de corbin is that it is ethereal :) And has 30% IAS... A very nice merc stick!

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Sardonic - Thanks for the heads up, but here in the nether regions, his name is given as Achab. Not that it matters much, he wound up pretty dead, and his wife as well...

Two more superuniques. First off, the countess. Oddness here, since I managed to kill her, but for some reason, her chest never opened. Oh well, it doesn't matter much, I can only use her drop. And it was pretty nice. 4 blue items and a tir rune(and some keys), good loot!
The best find was a beryl spiked shield of blocking, but the Studded leather of selfrepair she dropped was good as well. The other drops were thowing knives and axes, neither much good.

The Tamoe highlands were pretty uneventful, as was the pit. Well, the pit lvl 2 wasn't, there I lost my mercenary for the first time. But I slowly managed to whittle them all away, and found nothing useful in return :)
Barracks were better doable then with hettar, due to less annoying boss modifiers. The toughest mob was a lightning enchanted skaleton mage hero, the easiest(by far) the Smith. Bash SO owns that guy. Just face him on open ground, and use bash. He'll get knockback. As soon as he moves again, use bash again. Repeat until the merc kills the smith :) His drop? Well, a superior spiked club, a skull cap and a heavy gloves of dexterity, which replaced the leather gloves of selfrepair from ColdCrow.
Tagged the Jail waypoint, so next up are pitspawn and Bone ash and finally andy in all her spikey glory

Nice progress Thomh. I have the feeling I'll have company in Hell is the not so distant future.

Enkidu took a whirlwind tour of the palace. The decour is nice, but the residents stink. Especially the cold enhanced skeleton mages. For some reason they have it in for the merc, had to run away several times on the first level to keep him alive, and he has 70% resistance to cold too. :scratchchin: Regardless the monsters couldn't stop Enkidu, until the Sanctuary was reached that is. First leg he walked down what did he find in one of the corners, but a conviction enhanced vampire bosspack. They were stuck on the opposite site of the stairs (it was the windy leg) and try as he might, Enkidu couldn't get close. Every time he stepped into range, a half dozen fireballs were incoming and he was standing in a firewall or two. Just wasn't worth the hassle, so Enkidu went the opposite way and cleared out the rest of the level. The Summoner was kind, and dropped a ring with 1-4 fire damage as his only drop.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

I have been keeping my eye on this tournament for a very long time now and have wanted to join, however i was too occupied with the Midas tournament. Well now that i feel that i have tried enough in that tournament (which is very hard, i may add) i have decided to give this a shot and see how i fair. Also to tell you the truth i am looking forward to playing away from Random.org for skills and GF only items...:p (don't tell Insane Wayne though ). But i guess thats because my last like 5 characters have been played in that tournament.

Anyway..... i have a question for you Merlin (i may have more later but for now this is all i have). This may have been asked but i don't have the time now (at school) to go over and have a look. But in the initial rules you mention :

Equipment = Anything that fills a weapon or armor slot.
Anything else may be picked up and used freely from every monster. This includes runes, gems, scrolls, keys, potions and anything else I missed.

Does this mean Charms is also in the catagory of "freely from every monster" or can Charms only be used if dropped from a super unqiue?

PS. I will need more time to come up with a character as i don't have the time now to plan, but i should later in the day.

Charms are included yes.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Welcome Morathi, and GL with whatever you choose to play.

Jack started todays session with a little gambling. I focused mainly on belts and gloves for the personalization quest, but nothing extraordinary was given to me by Jamella.

Then we wanted to teach some corpse spitters and flesh spawners a lesson. I rushed Jack into the Plains of Despair and suddenly I heard a way too familiar sound. ZAP! And the Oak sage was gone, then the screen lit up and the merc was dead. Jack ran for his life and was hit by lightning from all directions. Right click to refresh cyclone and left hand on rejuvs. Finally got a TP up and resurrected the merc. Jack did not go though the TP again, but walked all the way from the Fortress. Luckily I had missed a few monsters the first time, so I let the merc poke them a little to turn on his aura. After about half an hour Jack manage to kill the last of the buring souls, turns out there were 2 packs of bosses that I recklessly walked into.

The rest of the act was really anticlimatic, with horrible drops form everyone. Hellforge gave me a Hel, and Diablo dropped mostly crap and a nice armor that might be useful later on. I wish there was more to be told, but Diablo was actually incredibly easy this time. Fazel managed to tank him for 10 sec or so, and then Jack tanked him for 10 sec while Fazel was drinking Healing potions. I just did that routine for about 5 minutes and Diablo went down. Just two trips back to town to refill on potions and only one merc death.

Act 1 completed. This is the first time I wasn't able to give the merc her normal bow, 3os bow with chipped sapphire, ruby and emerald. And it made a huge difference. I found too many weapons and my merc had to go bowless for some time. Then I got lucky from The Smith and got a long bow with life leech. Made a bit difference and she was able to do decent damage. Cleared everything on P8 up till level 4 went P1 for Andy. Was rewarded with a nice drop. Still not sure what to use but the armour was a definate upgrade.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

I was planning to just have another short session aand move quickly to rescue Anya. Jack was really lucky with the monster spawns in the Bloody Foothills, Frigid Highlands and Arreat Plateu. Mostly melee monsters all the way, and those are no match for Hurricane and Tornado. I`m still amazed by the speed of this druid. Hurricane is doing close to 1K damage at level 70, and Tornado close to 2K. It really doesn`t seem like that much, but he two-hit kills nearly everything.

The superuniques were evil and dropped a bunch of Throwing weapons and a lot of Two-Handed Swords, so nothing useful there. Jack continued down the Crystalline Passage to find the Frozen River and see if Frozenstein was carrying some goods. On his way there he touched an evil urn and this dropped. That means the merc has got his end game helmet. I might socket it and put my Sol in there for extra tanking, but we`ll see. The personalization quest in Nightmare is definately going to be used on this one.

And the good luck didn`t stop there as Frozenstein dropped a unique Bone shield. I knew what it was, but I was just thinking "great, another crap unique". Well, checking its stats again, I have to say that the FCR and Poison Resist is just what Jack needs.

Wall of the Eyeless

I got a little carried away by this and decided to take on Nihlatak as well. Pindleskin was easy and his drop mirrored that. It was craptastic. The first level of Nihlatak`s Temple had a really terrible monster spawn. Frenzytaurs is not a friend of mine and this little devil nearly made it impossible to go further into the temple. The only reason I managed to kill him was because he and his buddies decided to attack the Oak Sage for a while. After that it was smooth sailing. Nihlatak was quite easy as Jack killed most of his minions from a long distance. Then we TPed and when we got back the corpses was gone. His drop was actually pretty good as this thing is quite useful for me:

Emerald Heavy Boots of Acceleration
Defense: 6
Durability: 14 of 14
Kick Damage: 4 to 10
Required Strength: 18
Required Level: 43
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 63

Poison Resist +39%
40% Faster Run/Walk

I still like my MF-setup, but these boots will be used if I get to the later stages of Hell. Poison is kind of my arch enemy since Cyclone takes care of all the other elemental attacks.

Enkidu ventured in to the Magi Canyon, knowing that the tombs were going to be very difficult. And yes they were. Oddly enough I found the true tomb right away and went to get Duriel done first. His entrance was three rooms from the stairs and I picked the right way first time, which almost never happens. So engaged Duriel, which wasn't as easy as finding him. The merc doesn't last 5 seconds against bosses anymore, so Enkidu tanked Duriel while drinking a steady stream of health potions. Over a dozen trips back to town and a few merc resurrections later Duriel was defeated.

After that Enkidu explored some of the false tombs as well as wandered the canyon. Unfortunately the tombs proved to be quite difficult as bosses like this, and this kept appearing around every turn. Coupled that with having to resurrect the mercenary around 30 times and it simply wasn't worth it to find Ancient Kaa. He's not worth any real points so I skipped him and stopped at Act III.
