Congrats Jcakes, welcome to Nightmare

My apologizes to all for confusing everyone when I made a mistake with the imbune quest. :ashamed:

Enkidu decided to enter Hell, after placing the rest of his extra stat points into Vitality. That gives him 900 life total at level 73 going to Hell, erk. :nervous: Thankfully no double-boss pack was encountered right out of the rogue camp so Enkidu survived for at least a minute in Hell. As it was his mercenary companion died at about half the bosses encountered. He's getting expensive to resurrect so Enkidu is picking up every piece of good Charsi equipment he can find. Corpsefire didn't help things either.

Needless to say lots of pack splitting was in order no matter where Enkidu went. Except the graveyard it seems. Blood Raven was a pushover, she did zero damage and her minions kept getting stuck on the graves so weren't able to surround our hero and his friend.

The Cave was rather interesting. Twice I thought I had fought ColdCrow due to the mods and cold enhanced abilities of the boss archer. That combo seems to come up a lot. However seems she just cloned herself a few times. Eventually she was found and gave the best drop so far, a Devil Star with 40% IAS. Only problem with that is Enkidu would need another 60 stat points in Strength to use it. Since that isn't going to happen, it goes into the stash.

@JCakes: Nice going! Hope you'll catch up with Mursilis soon, it gets lonely for him up there in hell :) How many sockets did your circlet get?

@Duke - Andy is getting closer and closer...

@RHD - Welcome! Hope you have fun in the tourney. Would you not have participated if someone did make Guardian?

@Mursilis - Perhaps worth it to invest some extra points in strength? Anyways, good luck in hell! Hope you have more luck then the proverbial snowball!

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@All: Sorry for the lack of updates. Certain obstacles in RL and also other D2 interests when I am able to play. Glad to see everyone progressing strongly, and welcome to all those new.

@Fast Eddie: Slacker! :tongue:

Enkidu has taken some major lumps wandering through Act I. Far too many lightning/cold immune bosses for my taste. As a result I upgraded the rare poleaxe that my merc was using and socketed it with an Amn rune that dropped in the Tamoe Highlands. This increased his survivability a tad but also mean we were able to deal with those nasty dual immunes. Up to this point it entailed me taping my mouse button down to keep the attacks going, then going off to fix myself some lunch. :whistling: Now, not nearly as bad.

Definitely some scary moments when a quick rejuv saved Enkidu's life. Most noteabely was against Pitspawn Fouldog. Since he's always cursed that makes him a bit tough, but it gets even more so when he has a skeleton archer boss pack as backup. Ended up opening his cage and luring the minions out one by one to an adjoining room to deal with them.

Entering the Barracks took quite a while to clear out, as there were four champion shamans in there along with the three regular ones. After that and Pitspawn the only hairy moment was against a triple bosspack of lightning enhanced vampire packs. None of them would stand still long enough to kill off so Enkidu ended up chasing them all over the Catacombs. Didn't help that one of the bosses had the teleport mod. Argh.

Andariel wasn't as bad as expected. The mercenary did die quite quickly (as expected) but Enkidu was able to tank her quite well. Helped that whenever he needed to restock postions from his inventory he could just close the door on her, restock, then reopen the door and keep swinging away. Apparently she's not that bright, even Velociraptors learned how to open doors.

In the end she didn't drop much, but that was ok. Bone Ash gave the best drop to date....A Stoneraven. Granted I can't use it, but it's a really nice weapon and since the inherent resistances almost equals my spirit shield were it faster I'd be tempted to switch.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Good going there Mursilis! Too bad I have no idea what a stoneraven is, but it's probably good :P Can you use the small crescent dropped by Andy?

I took Filiae through the Spider Forest just now. Stash is full again, so I'll have to ATMA her empty again.
Loot : No runes, flawless topaz and ruby.
Vidala's barb, isenharts horns.
But I'll save the best for last: My first hero monster didn't drop just one, but 2 gold items :) Yup, not just the jade statue, but also a nice Nightsmoke. A decent drop, and since a better belt stands high on my priority list, certainly an item that might be considered for pesonalization...
And finally another exceptional unqiue: A dark clan crusher. Not too useful for me, but a nice find nevertheless :)
Szaark was far less kind. He died easy enough, and dropped a Steel broadsword and Greaves of Nova Shield.

EDIT : @FatFree
That error screen doesn't seem familiar to me. I am first to admit I know little about error screens, but this one seems more like a hoax to me. Especially that little error message at the end...
Perhaps a virus of some sort? Or some sort of personal joke? some spyware acting up?

EDIT2: Also cleared the Great Marsh. This time around, no fancy uniques or set items. Still, very useful, since I found a lovely SC (+13 life, +11 mana). Also a flawless ruby, skull and amethyst. And a rare ring with all resist +5, MD reduced by 2 and +78 mana. Shame I can't swap my other ring out for it...

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Just ran into this...

a bit unexpected, but that's life. Or death, however you count it. I have a new hard drive, but I don't know yet whether I can pull anything off the old one. We'll see. In any case, it'll be at least a few days before I get around to installing DII again.

Ooooo, physical memory dump. That's not good. Have you tried the directions given in terms of running a Window's update and such? You could try restarting your computer in Safe Mode and then run a full spyware and antivirus scan. Clean everything out. Also dump your browser's cache and then run a Scandisk scan. See if that helps...

@Merlin:
Stoneraven
Matriarchal Spear
Two-Hand Damage: 214 to 313
Durability: 26 of 28
(Amazon Only)
Required Dexterity: 142
Required Strength: 114
Required Level: 64
Spear Class - Normal Attack Speed
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 75
Fingerprint: 0x90bb5d7a
+230% Enhanced Damage
+479 Defense
All Resistances +43
Adds 101-187 magic damage
+2 to Javelin and Spear Skills (Amazon Only)

Not the easiest to find item. Too bad I'm not a Javazon. As for the Crescent that Andarial dropped, it isn't as useful as my current item but I will hold onto it in case I run into anymore lighthing/cold immunes. If nothing else I can chip away at the monster with the fire damage.

Btw, nice find with the Nightsmoke. I found one as well and it was between that belt and the Goldskin in terms of what I would use my NM personalization quest for. The Goldskin won out due to more resistances.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

yeah, I tried safe mode and every other option, and it would flash a blue screen at me and let me try again.. so I tried reinstalling windows, but it wouldn't recognize the old installation, which probably means some bad corruption, and I didn't want to reformat the disk. The drive wasn't making any strange noises or anything, so I have hopes for partial recovery, but for now I have to assume total loss.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

That is weird, maybe you should contact Bill Gates like it tells you too :p

You should be able to recover most, if not all, of the data on the hard drive. You'd have to bring it to a computer store where they do such work, but at least all of your files would be saved. Then yeah sounds like you'll have to format the disk and start fresh.

So yeah, Enkidu though he'd try to find Radament before going to bed. Enkidu and his merc both have maxed fire resistance, very few monsters down there are cold immune, what could go wrong? Level 1, no problem. Lots of skeleton warrior bosses but nothing that couldn't be handled by bottling the pack up in a tight space and fighting them 1-2 at a time. Second level, pretty much the same, except fire archers made their appearance and required more than one quick rejuv and a hasty retreat. That should have been a good indication of what was waiting for Enkidu on level three.

Step out of the stairs and see nothing, turn the corner and what do we see but a few mages running around with a nice bright red aura under their feet. Fanatacism...ok that I can deal with since they are mages so no physical attack. Moving forward to engage the mages, this requires Enkidu to step into an intersection. In doing so he wakes up a boss pack of skeleton warriors that comes a running. Great, that's not good, need to find the mage boss quick. Um, what's that shiny green aura under the warriors feet? Conviction! Oh crap.

This leads Enkidu to a dilemma, take on the warriors while boosted by Fanaticsm or take on the mages while boosted with Conviction. He can't run very far as this is just around the corner from the stairs so none of the level has been cleared yet. Enkidu ends up not getting to choose as his merc apparently has a death wish and moves to engage the warriors, so Enkidu quickly looks for the mage boss while the warriors are busy. Mind you with Holy Freeze active all of the mages are the same color (blue) so each has to be highlighted in turn, which is time consuming.

Enkidu hears a death scream and thinks that the merc got one of the warriors. Takes him a second to remember skeletons don't scream. Uh oh. The warriors are almost upon him so Enkidu sprints away towards the stairs, gets some breathing room and TPs out. Time to resurrect the merc and hope the packs have scattered a bit. Having no idea what will be awaiting them on the other side of the TP, Enkidu and his merc step through (Enkidu made the merc go first ). A few warriors and a mage or two wandering around, but no auras, yes! Dispatch those to find the mage boss wandering their way. The merc intercepts some warriors at the intersection as Enkidu, gulping potions galore since Conviction is active, makes a beeline for the mage boss and takes a few zeal swings. One down, one to go. Oh, there he is. And there he goes. Now just need to mop up the minions and we're safe.

That was fun. It couldn't get harder, could it? A couple turns later I realize I really have to stop asking myself that question. Step into an intersection but what do we see, large pack of mages to the left, large pack of mages to the right, oh and a boss pack of mages in front. Golly gee look, he's got the conviction aura too. Uh, retreat?! Thankfully this time I have lots of open areas to work with. Run up, dodge a few fire bolts then run away and hope one or two mages follow. Wipe them out, rinse and repeat. The boss however was a different story. No way am I tanking him, just a few of those charged bolts kills off the merc. Time to switch to ranged attack. Feeding the merc rejuv potions they both whittle away at the bosses life (several resurrections needed here) until the threat is gone.

Thankfully Radament is next, whose minions just refuse to shatter like good little monsters. Enkidu must have killed each one five times before the majority were shattered and couldn't be resurrected. Then both he and the merc start taking swings at Radament himself. Constant potions to the merc since he's getting super poisoned. Normally I'd switch to MF boots near the end of the fight, but no way and I leaving for any period of time so Radament could resurrect some of his buddies and we have to start the fight all over again. So with no MF boots Radament falls, and drops complete and utter crap. After all that, throw me a bone won't you Rad? (and I don't mean your leg)

Now I definitely am done for the night.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Fatfree - You hoping for some bad segments at the first few sectors of the HD? (heavy crash, but no data loss) Well, whatever the cause is, I wish you good luck with fixing it, and please let us know what it turned out to be, I know I'd love to know!

@Mursilis - That does look like an impressive find! Nice item that stoneraven... But indeed useless to you :)
As far as your radament adventures go: EEP! Shows you have some amazing skills, escaping all of those death traps. Too bad Raddie dropped crap, but at least you got a free skillpoint and anohter solved quest :)

Filiae cleaned out the Flayer jungle, allthough she'll have to go back and enter the flayer dungeon.
I kinda like this area. It's basically either a manic sturggle against unsurmountable odds, or a literal feast of items and XP. For me, it was halfway in between. A couple of nasty FE EF bosses(yeah, 2). Not together, but still scary, because I am a tad afraid of the FE bug atm. I have 670 life, which isn't all that hot. Luckily enough, my FR is in the 40's(or higher) with Fade on.
As it turns out, my moron can tank more then I anticipated, and so I wa able to explode both those nasties with some meteors I was lucky enough neither was fire immune.(I know, bad choice vs FE, but the only attack with a timer, allowing me to hightail outta there...)
Fairly quickly in, a green Full plate mail dropped. Nice, I don't think I have that particular bodypart of Tancred yet! I have been thinking about that nightsmoke pretty much the entire area, and wondering what the unique mesh belt would be like.
the gods of Diablo, it seems, are tuned into my brainwaves and happily obliged my wish. Probably with a morbid sense of humor too, since it turned out to be ethereal. And to have crappy mods to boot. What do I need mana steal, regenerate mana and stuff for? I'd rather up the nightsmoke!
I was a tad worried about Stormtree. I know how hard that dude and his pack of kindlewood can hit. When I saw he was CE in addition to EF and LE, I ran away and tried to split the pack up. That worked VERY well, and I was able to kill each pack member alone and easily enough with meteors. Until only Stormtree and one single minion remained. I fed the merc a couple of reds while he tanked stormtree, and quickly dropped three meteors on their heads. It worked well enough, but his drop was a disappointment! A shivering large charm which I immediatle ysold and a maiden's pilum. A well, at least I won't have to worry about him anymore.

I did enter the Swampy pit, and boy oh boy, was I in for a treat! As it turned out, despite having three different monster types in the pit, all heroes and champions were undead stygian dollies. ARGH!
The first level was a drag. Each room held either champions or a hero doll, and I wasn't about to let their Corpse explosion hit me. Nevertheless, they all died fairly quickly, and dropped crap. So onto lvl 2. And onto what I found was a room with not 1, not 2, but 3 undead stygian doll heroes! One with Conviction, and BOTH of the other two with Fire Enchanted. Oh no!
Needless to say, it cost me my mercenary a couple of times, and I spend most of my time Cloaking, and dropping meteors, but in the end, both FE bosses and the minions died. The third one with Conviction wisely enough decided not to join the fray and let his aura do his work for him, a tactic that worked distressingly well. But with the two FE bosses dead, all that was left was the conviction heo, and his additional teleport mod proved to be of little use to him. Total amount of useful items found : 0.
Still, in the next room, some common mob dropped a thul rune, not great, but my best find here. The sparkly chest downstairs dropped three crappy rares (Well, the scythe had 30% IAS, and massive poison and lightning damage, that was nice. Still sold it though.)

I tagged the lower kurast waypoint, and I am now dubbing whehter I'll start my next session dashing out of lower kurast to the Flayer dungeon (not something I look forward to) or from the Flayer jungle waypoint forward. That one is a bit longer, and at the start i have a long, narrow corridor where I can easily be trapped by flayers.

Choices, choices...

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

I obviously couldn`t keep away for long. My heptad chars are starting to drop like flies, so time is not an issue anymore. Since there are no druids in this tournament at all, I guess I have to make one. Jack, the windy druid, is born and yours truly will have to figure out how to survive the first 30 levels with an axe of self-repair and other crappy stuff until tornadoes start doing their thing.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

It turned out to be a bad choice, but I learned a valuable lesson. Don't try to desperately stick to the: single pass rule. That was the one that kill me. I had no chance to maneuvre through the flayers and soul killers, and was done under by some minions of a cold enchanted boss. I really tried though. When I died, my merc had already died, and I had no potions left in my belt.

I'll roll on random.org for my next char.

EDIT: I wanted to have a bit of choice, so I opted for three integers. If they were all different, I would decide between them. If there were two the same, it would be that one. as it turned out, the roll was 7 3 7. I liked my Fury druid stint, so I'll follow thomh in his footsteps and start a druid of my own.

Noooooo Merlin! :tombstone: I was about to congratulate you on getting through all those scary bosspacks (especially the dolls). That's very unfortunate. I guess that's a good lesson for us all, clear your way to the next area at p1 before ramping it up to p8 to stick to the single pass rule. Personally I've gone longer in my sessions than I'd like ensuring that I stop at a WP that doesn't require any retracing of routes. But that leads to some very tired gaming sessions.
