Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Duke - That's a great andy drop! Hope you have similar succes in the future!

@Sardonic - Excellent(if a bit long winded) write up. I just want to point out that rings and amulets are good finds. If you hold on to every ring/amulet you find, you can use the horadric cube to get some much better rings/amulets for those spots...

@Duke's reply below : I just finished my other tournaments char goal for the moment (she just killed of all the cows and ended normal) and so I am more then ready to give Filiae here another run for her money...

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Merlin - Thanks, act 2 is Uber,Most enemy's are undead, yay for holy bolt two casts and enemy drops. :jig:
How are you doing by the way?

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

In preparation for my next session, I hired Kasim, a might merc (I have my own crowd control, so I'd rather cash in on added damage for the merc and me, but I might change if I don't like it).
I also decided to put his ethereal breast plate with fire resist in the cube and craft a safety breast plate. The result was a mixed bag really. Both MD and dam reduction were minimal(both 1), and I got some crappy FR on it as well. However, it also has 2 open sockets. And that is a very nice addition indeed! If I can find some good jewels to put in there, I'll switch out my current crafted breast plate for it. As for me, I donned the Twitchtroe of course :)

EDIT : On second thought, both my and my morons physical damage is craptastic, so I don't see much use for a Might merc. Hence, I'll spend another 16K and rehire a Holy Freeze one.

Umm... you need to slow down now so that I can catch up... just so you're aware. ;)

I must have missed that memo. No worries, from here on out I expect even more trouble than I've already encountered so progress will be slow, at best.

Besides which IF I can get by Baal I'm going to have to take a long time figuring out where to use my socket and personalization quest rewards, as well as attempting a few crafting sessions.

@Duke: Nice Radament drop there

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Mursilis - Do you mean Andariel?
By the way : hows it going?Still at Nightmare WSK?Gl in the future.

EDIT : Got Cathans seal...From a Hell Clan!Dang!No LL for me.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Okay, I think I'm understanding basically nothing about the cube, I think. Maybe I should do some reading on that. For the most part, I was under the impression it was mostly for getting better runes/gems by cubing up the ladder of those.

Is there a link to somewhere that I should be reading to get a better understanding?

Thanks.

And Duke... dang, man... beautiful.

Not unless you personalize it no, since it's magical and didn't drop from a SU. At least that's my understanding.

I'm still in the WSK, when I get the chance I'll see how bad Baal's minions are.

@Sardonic: This is what you want.

Cube Recipes

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Mursilis

Thanks, man... that was exactly what I was looking for. Figures it'd be in somewhere easy, bah.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Thanks for answering Duke Hellscream Mursilis, I missed the question.

@Sardonic - Frankly, the Cube can be your best friend this tournament. I strongly advise you to save and stash(if you use ATMA or Go Mule) all your amulets and rings, and use them to cube up a magic amulet/ring with useful properties for you. Also, save as many gems/runes/jewels as you can, so you can freely craft more useful items then the semi-crappy blues you will undoubtedly receive.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@ Merlin - So you can cube rings/amulets and put them on (equip),even though the rings and/or amulets we're droped by normal monsters (not super unique monsters)?
And the same about crafting?

EDIT : Thanks, Merlin

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

No, it goes along these lines.
As long as the original piece of equipment used in a cube recipe comes from a superunique monster, the result is still a legitimate item to wear.
This means that you can make a new ring/amulet from any amulet/ring that drops using the 3 rings --> 1 amulet and 3 amulets --> 1 ring recipe, as long as 1 of the 3 original rings or amulets came from a superunique.

Let's say you saved 8 rings and 5 amulets. Now you have a horadric cube and find a ring with +1 max dam. Let's call that ring A. Now you are free to take A and two of the saved rings, and make a new amulet, B. You may use B. If you don't like B though, you may take two of the saved amulets, and use it with amulet B to make ring C. Etc.

Crafted items are the same. As long as the equipment used in the crafting recipe comes from a superunique, you are free to use the end result. So you could take that ring A mentioned above, take the other reuiqred components and craft a legit new ring from it.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Oh, wow... I screwed up... oh well. Live and learn!

Oh, yeah, quick question...

Can you MP at all? Or is this strictly SP?

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

No problem Duke.

So, Filiae went into the sewers. Several monsters quickly found out that the combination of her and her merc(Neeraj) was particularly unhealthy. They were usually slowed at a distance from the Holy Freeze, then, depending on whether Neeraj was there or me, they got PRevent Monster heal and a chance of either Amplify Damage and Blind over their head, and if I was around, they were slowed in addition to the Holy Freeze.

That results in a mob of terribly sick monsters :)

So I progressed through the sewers. Each level had difficult sections, in which 2 heroes were located close together and champions nearby as well. All the same type. On the top level, it was just plain burning dead, which made for some intense battles, especially a particualrly nasty Magic Resistant/ Lightning Enchanted one.
On the level below, it became Burning dead archers, and suddenly, I became terribly enamored of Cloak of Shadows. Nevertheless, at least 6 merc resurrections here. Sigh.
One was Spectral hit Extra fast, the other was Aura enchanted(fanaticism) cursed. NOT good combinations.

Eventually, that lot died as well, on to lvl 3, where the burning mages didn't pose much of a problem. That left Radament.
After a fairly uneventful fight, he died. His drop?
You won't believe it....

Prepare for awesomeness....

You are going to be sooooooooooooooooooooo envious of Filiae....

No really....

I am not lying.....

It was... A TAL Rune ;) Can you imagine the sheer joy of getting such leet gear? I felt a bit dizzy...
Of course, I also found a nice Bverrits Keep down there. At that time, I figured it would be a good personalize item in case I needed more Fire resist.

Well, with that done, time to go into the open deserts! While venturing outside, I quickly found a terribly nice surprise... a unique round shield! Look, now THERE's an item worth imbuing. Good +all resists and 2 open sockets, combined with a hefty defence and good blocking? Yay for Moser's Blessed Circle!
Into the Stony Tomb. I quickly found out it was meant to be a tomb for me... The top level held two rooms and the exit. EACH of those rooms held 2 heroes! (So 4 total!)
Blegh! The first was most definetely the hardest, two burning dead mage heroes with charged bolts, one of which was Magic resistant lightning enchanted and immune to both fire and lightning. The other was multishot spectral hit. My merc died three times before I cleared it out. Next room held a horror hero and a lightning mage, much less of a problem, particularly since the horro hero proved very vulnerable to fire and was quickly cooked.
The second lvl held two easy rooms, but Creeping feature had the additional modifier of Cursed which made him a pain. One hit from him or one of his cronies not only slowed me but took about half of my life bulb away. Once again, 2 merc resurrections (I am soemtimes amazed I even make money anymore... But I do) He died and dropped : A Fine Siege crossbow and a Toxic War Staff. Useless.

So that means on to the dry hills. Once again a very uneventful outside area, with plenty of easy kills. But I knew the HAlls of the Dead would be different... It started off with a large open room complete with plenty of bats, and 7 greater mummies, 4 of which were champions. And some Decayed as well, but I was FAR too busy to notice those. It took a lot of work to clear those, but that was my biggest trial in the tomb. It was all slow going, but never nearly as difficult as that battle.
Another unique drop on the second lvl of the halls of the dead. A nice unique... round shield. Yes ladies and gents, Moser was busy dropping his circles all around for me to find! Three more and I can make the olympic symbol!
Bloodwitch was easy (her additional mod was teleport) and her drop was crappy. A grand charm with +14 mana (sold it, no use). and a Lizards light plate of the mammoth. I might craft it at a later stage, but for now, I dont see the point. Caster body armor should be worn by the main char, not the mercenary, and I dont see me foregoing the Twitchtroe anytime soon.

@Sardonic - This is an SP tourney, so no MP please.
Besides, it would be dreadful if you DID find an awesome drop from a superunique and your buddy wants it as well huh?

I call HAX ... Imbuing a unique ... ;)

Not muc to update from me, Ishbel has cleared act V up to anya, with no real noteworthy drops. A full update later.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Deeds!!!!

I should really start to play slower. Lately I have been trying to get from A to B as fast as possible and the means I take some pretty stupid risks. Chaos Sanctuary is not a place for running around like crazy and a pretty bad teleport into the Infector of Souls and his minions was just asking for it.

Since my restart I have decided that my tourney chars are one-shot only, so I will gracefully retire now. Since I`m addicted to Diablo I might come back in a month or two. In the meantime I wish you all good luck and I hope everybody become Guardians:)

I think I`ll try to get rid of some of my other tourney chars now:nod:

Oh, Izual dropped something useless that I don`t really remember and Hephasto dropped a nice pair of rare Gloves(minor resist boost, +strength and 21% MF!!!!). Too bad that doesn`t matter now.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@ Thomh: Sorry to hear about your deeds. I have the same problem (hence my fourth character in this tournament!) but I guess that's due to my stubbornness. I hope you will at least continue to lurk here.

@ All: Sorry for the lack of updates, I am currently working my sixth out of seven shifts straight and it's really taken it out of me. I hope to play soon though.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Sir_William started his journey to the tomb of Tal Rasha Today.
The Summoner was a pain in the butt : Glacial spike is NOT COOL (not cool in the punny way I mean).
Droped Hatchet Hands of the leech,Large shield of thawing, and a crimison Trident.Stay tuned for my journey to the tomb of Tal Rasha :jig:.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

@Thomh : RIP. I know how dangerous hurrying can be... I pulled through yb the skin of my teeth vs fangskin due to hurrying. But it would be nice to see a great contender re-etner, however, goodbye for now. Hope you have fun in other tournaments!

@FastEddie - NP. One more day until your marathon shifts are done... hope you pull through!

@Duke - The summoner is a royal pain. Ridiculously few hitpoints, but still a royal pain. I'm not looking forward to facing him.

Having cleared out the halls of the dead, Filiae didn't expect many problems in the Oasis, and she was right. All easy going, beetleburst dropped 2 decent rares( a halberd with life leech and some nehanced damage makes my best offensive mercenray weapon in my inventory so far). His rare full helm had a good defense (+75% mod) and great Lignthing resist(23) but no need to swap out my current merc headgear, or my own for that matter.
The MAggot lair was easier then expected. But then, the meteor discharge of the PS does wonders against the mobs there, they all get cooked by the flames. Without any fireimmunes here, it was a steady rump through to coldurm, who quickly succumbed to lightning discharges. Two ethereal items, crappy blue scissors katar and a rondel with +1 necro skills and hefty cold and poison damage on it.
My next session went into the lost city. My moron was quite suspectible to the poison damage (I too with a neat -30 without fade :) ) which meant several resurrects and quick town portals. Good thing those plague bearers are slooooow. Apart form being poisoned many times, I held my own outside, and Dark elder was the easiest of the heroes there. His drop wasn't all that bad. A rare throwing spear with life and mana steal, 20% IAS, good poison and cold damage. Makes for a decent throwing weapon, which is of course useless to me, but still :) ) His other item is a ring of accuracy. Will get to cubing another blue ring befor eI enter the palace.

Ancient tunnels were difficult enough, but eventually empties. That left one last hurdle, the viper temple. I had the bad luck that the monstes didn't register my mercenary, which made for REALLY interesting times. Iwould have quit and restarted, but the loot came in fast and good at the early stages, tempting me to continue. And so I did. Since I had salamanders, guardians (ARGH) and Embalmed facing me, it was slow going. Eventually I settled on cloaking and then focusing on the Guardians, trying to get some meteors on their head. It's there that I discovered the fatal flaw in my setup... No good kick skill yet! I had little problem charging up, but a lot of problems kicking my enemies! Next few levels will all go into Dragon Talon...

Eventually, everything died, which meant I was ready for Fangskin. Glub. It made for some seriously frantic running around, since I inadvertenyl clicked into the middle of a salamander pack(not fangskins one) with dragon flight!
2 merc deaths, 2 NDEs for me, until I found myself up near the altar. From there on, I simply killed everything else. Fangskin dropped a crappy Rare breast plate and an awesome rare giant sword... If I was a paladin that is. +2 combat skills, mana steal, the works. Oh well.

Loot. Runes: crappy. All lower then Tal.
Gems. Plenty. Cubed up perfects in all gems categories now
Set items. None
Gold: Kinamil's Awl outside of the Viper Temple. Inside: Hawkmail, Battlebranch and Brainhew.

Re: Tournament: The emperor's clothes

Nice progress there Merlin. Of course I will continue to lurk here, I love to read about other peoples progress. This tournament will probably go on for a while, so I am pretty sure you haven`t seen the last of me here.

Just one more thing and I`ll go back to lurking. Merlin: I am pretty sure I speak for everyone here when I say that your stamina and creativity when it comes to making new tournaments is outstanding. It has really made the game alot more fun for me and probably a lot of other people. Of course that goes to the creator of every tournament I have entered. You guys make this community rock!
