Thoughs on getting "hacked" from Experience. ifr

And what excuse/explanation are those of you without girlfriends, going to use?

I sympathize with your losses but maintain that this is due to sloppy internet usage. Not checking your browser history, allowing cookies and downloads and not doing proper virus/bot checks. May I also direct your attention to the user feature in Windows? Give each user their own login, which doesn't have full administrtive rights; reserve the admin rights for one user which is ONLY used for admin purposes. If one user does pick up something impossible to get rid of then delete that user. No major harm done.

And those women without men have no troubles at all.

Thyiad - touche.

incidentally back on topic, Cooked, very sorry for your loss. i don't know why i feel worse for you than any other person that has recently been hax0red. maybe because you're a part-time player or because you have kids, i feel i can relate a little more.

when you're hacked, you feel completely vulnerable and violated. i run a linux server hosting a pile of websites, email and so forth. when that box was hacked, i thought it was the end of the world. at the end of the recovery, i realized that type of stuff happens all the time - i just happened to be the unlucky sysadmin that day. whether you're specifically targeted or not .. usually it's down to time and numbers, and unfortunately, 1337 scriptkiddies have plenty of both.

I too lost everything:

2 Last wishes, 3 Forts, 1 CoH, 2 enigmas, Arach, Maras, 2x CTA, inf, griffon, ...the list goes on.

I was dumb enough to make an account on RPGtraders loooong ago before I realized I'd never interact there with this forum available.

What was dumb was that I used the same username and pw as my game account. No one would allow that data to get out right? Wrong.

Apparently, their forum user file is not or was not secure and a number of people got ripped.

What's the point?

No way am I starting over. It was fun but the ladder is wrecked for me. No way to recover before reset and no desire to do so. As the ladder drones on and on and on... my excitement for the reset wanes also.

I guess the point is don't be lazy like I was. But, whoever you are out there that has all my stuff - karma's a (bear).

Well it was that or a comment about rubber dolls.

The comments in this thread really are quite appalling. No-one is taking responsibility. Trojans don't just appear on computers. If it is your computer and your account it is your responsibility to keep it safe. If you don't the fault lies with you. No-one else. In 20 years of net access I haven't been hacked/had items stolen/had my bank account emptied (I do intenet banking) or even anything more annoying that spam into my email and that is filtered and goes straight into junk.

Why? Because I don't go clicking wildly around, I check sites before visiting, I always virus check/bot check my hard drive if I even suspect there is an issue. No one else uses my computers unless I am there and if I can't be there the virus scans are done before I do anything else. No, I don't give out my passwords to anyone, they aren't all the same. I don't change them as often as I should but it isn't my date of birth or anything else that is easily guessed.

FYI: try McAfee site checker. Gives a rundown of things you can expect when visiting a site. It is quite interesting.

And for those who persist in the "it's not my fault, my girlfriend did it" then what you are saying is your girlfriend is stupid and she goes out with you. Well, quite.

Ow. I could feel the nuts of all the men in the world get drop kicked as I read that sentence (if that makes any sense...). That's perfect...

Be more careful with what you download. Keep one computer for playing and one for downloads.

Edit: I don't really care when others post such things, but I've seen you here for a long time, so yours is probably the only post of its kind that has made me feel sad.

My old computer is too slow to either play this game or use the Internet; otherwise a very good idea.

Thanks on the edit.

What realm do you play on? ...

Also, nice orb. I've got two of those, one with +2 All, one with +2 Fire. You win my respect for making an Enchantress. Anyone that makes one of those plays the game on a deeper level than most.

I play West too.

My enchantress was at level 52 enchant and heading for lvl 54. Oh well. :)

Cooked, you're one of the most honest and trustworthy persons I've ever met on this board....

I hope you continue to play. You're a welcome and well-liked member of this forum and we'd like you to stick around. If you ever feel up to a fresh start with fewer risks, you should have a close look at our Single Player community....

Thanks Dredd. I think I might take a break for awhile. SP may be the way to go. I do have two computers and was doing my transfers on open then going back to SP.

Hi Cooked... I just joined the forums.

...I joined these forums when I recently came back to D2 and I doubt I will ever acquire most of those items lost...

Welcome to the forums. Yes it was a lot of gear but you will enjoy finding and trading for such here in our forums.

Delete + BAN plz.

Hacker.

Ha! Always fun to hear from you!

Try and be a optimist.
Be glad you found it because they took diablo stuff.
They could have installed a key logger, got you tax returns and banking information and you would be asking people you know in the real word for food and shelter.

No such information on my computer which may be why I don't run as safely as I should.

....no way is what he said (in this post) a bannable offense....

And then you get banned, for what I don't know.

I followed your link. Wonder if anyone else did.

I sympathize with your losses but maintain that this is due to sloppy Internet usage....

This is true. I shouldn't have to but I shouldn't have to protect my home and other possessions either; however the world is what it is and I will be more careful in the future. (I wonder if I could make a worm that is automatically returned to anyone trying to place viruses on my computer? One that reaches out and pilfers the offenders wallet to reimburse me for the time and expense of defending myself.)

...Give each user their own login...

This I do.

To all posters. Thank you for your comments and ideas.

I did too :embarassed:

maybe they would think twice if this was to happen. because then it would THEIR computers who'd get infected.

All I can say is sorry about your loss :(.

'Twas a response to wildbillboy's banning comment. :wink3:
I'm confused; why would you wonder if anyone else followed the link?

Well, most of us are in a hurry and really don't look carefully at some posts. (I am sometimes guilty here.) Also there were no comments on your link and some of the newer members may not even recognize that there was a link in your post.

Heh. I gave the link as "........." which I admit may be pretty hard to see since the red dots might blend into the reddish background.

If you do decide to give Single Player a serious go, don't bother with the whole Open transfer ritual; all you need is ATMA, possibly Flavie, and the good ol' support thread for both.

The only downside is that if you were a packrat before, the infinite storage space and ATMA's ease of use will further encourage that behavior. I've currently got around 4000 PGems and over 500 million gold in storage, for example.

Whatever you decide to do though, I wish you the best!

Ehm...

You know what gold is and gems are good for, don't you ?

I don't cube charms (I trade the gems and let others do the cubing) and I have plenty of funny money for gambling high-end crafting amulets.

The gold I'm saving is for rings ... some very special rings that I never seem to have enough of because everyone cheats on their forum taxes.

Well, if you have 4000 gems, you are obviously not trading them :azn:

Regarding gold, I prefer coronets for L87+ characters, circlets for L92+ ones and amulets for my highest level one (L93 atm - perfect level for crafting gambled amulets).

The chance to gamble a FTU (forum tax unit) is 1 in 62,000 with an optimum level character and with -15% to vendor prices (smartass trap here BTW) that makes 42,500 gold per ring, i.e. an average of 2.635 billion gold is needed to gamble one under optimum conditions.

Perhaps you should better place a bounty of a couple ofd million ATMA gold on tax evaders.

I haven't done any trading since the rules change so I've been racking up a huge surplus. Not sure if I want to deal with runes again - it's the reason I left BNet after all.

2.6 billion you say? No sweat. I haven't started gold farming in earnest yet. I made 500 million just while test running and swapping around gear to find my optimal setup for my GF barb. I wonder just how much ATMA will hold.

I want other rings too though - nobody ever puts nice rares up for trade. I like Ravenfrosts too. I do grab circlets when they pop up, but usually don't go out of my way for them. My gambler is also 93 atm - don't know if she'll go much further though; I only level her when my friends are over on the weekends ... and I hate hate HATE Baal running with a passion.

Cooked, sorry to hear about your lost. If you wanna play Single Player instead, i'll be glad to meet you at the SPF.
