The Title Grail

After thinking about it for a bit, here is yet another (ridiculous) grail objective: the Title Grail.

The object is to get an untwinked character of every possible title, from Guardian (LoD HC) down to Sir (Classic SC male.)

For the lower titles (completing just NM or normal) it is desirable to use an underpowered build or some interesting restrictions for style points.

What counts as completing a title:

a) You must have a living, active, untwinked, equipped, character of that title to complete it.
For HC, thus the character must remain alive. That is, if you have a HC character who earns Champion by completing NM and then ends up getting killed in Hell, that doesn't count as completing Champion.

b) You must write a thread for the SPF about the character.

c) GoMule/ATMA can be used if desired but no items can be muled onto the character which come from another character (that is, all characters should be untwinked and their equipment kept all separate)

d) A character can (obviously) only have one title. If your Slayer goes on to beat NM and become a Champion that may complete "Champion" but now leave Slayer incomplete.

There are 19 total possible titles. The list is weighted toward Classic titles (12) since there are more gender-specific titles (King, Queen, etc.) in Classic. I like Classic so that isn't a problem for me. But for people who want to restrict to LoD titles, there are still 7 of those to complete.

Here is a blank table:

19 Titles
Code:
D2C SC:
Sir
Dame
Lord
Lady
Baron
Baroness

D2C HC:
Count
Countess
Duke
Duchess
King
Queen

LOD SC:
Slayer
Champion
Patriarch
Matriarch

LOD HC:
Destroyer
Conquerer
Guardian

Possibly interesting subprojects: there are two obvious subprojects:

1) Only do the LoD titles giving seven: Slayer, Champion, Patriarch, Matriarch, Destroyer, Conquerer, Guardian

2) Only do the Hell-beating titles, giving seven: Baron, Baroness, King, Queen, Pat, Mat, Guardian.

Since there are seven classes, naturally one would prefer to complete each of these with one character of each class!

Suggestions about rule changes/clarifications, comments, and so on, appreciated!

Re: The Title Grail

OK, here is my current status, satisfying 5 of the titles.

Remarkably, I have no Mat or Pats that count under these rules, as most of my SC play is twinked and I didn't write up any of my untwinked ones. All my writeups that count are HC, mostly from tourneys:

19 Titles
Code:
D2C SC
Sir
Dame
Lord
Lady
Baron
Baroness

D2C HC
Count [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=734644"]Count Kui[/URL] drummer barb
Countess
Duke
Duchess
King [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=708332"]King Kongdensate[/URL] ATMA-less Digglerdin
Queen [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=733573"]Queen Ceto[/URL] Static/Orbstress

LOD SC
Slayer
Champion
Patriarch
Matriarch

LOD HC
Destroyer
Conquerer [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4572704&postcount=350"]Conquerer CryoMixalot[/URL] from Skunkbelly's It Takes All Kinds Tourney
Guardian *[URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=591113"]Guardian ArtieLange[/URL] from Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tourney Sequel, played by many people
*[URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5375002&postcount=967"]Guardian GertrudeStein[/URL] from Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tourney Challenge, (played by many people and twinked in a tourney way)
*[URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4757156&postcount=560"]Guardian FiniteUniverse[/URL] from Skunkbelly's 99 items tourney (twinked in a weird restricted tourney way)

All of my listed Guardians currently have asterisks and came from tourneys. Each of them has some wrinkle which means it wouldn't count under my own proposed rules, so I'll have to do something about that!

I'm planning balance these titles at least somewhat across classes, so I'll have to plan somewhat there. I have no druids, assassins or necros currently filling any of these title spots, for example, so I'll need to do something about that.

Re: The Title Grail

I think it´s an awesome idea! 👍
Re: The Title Grail

Very cool.

Sounds like this could be combined with the Sept idea I'm using, to gain each of the end titles using one of each class. But I haven't made much progress with that in years, keep playing too many necromancers.

I'll see how my current character gets on, and if I get a second entry for the table I'll create my grail then. The thought occurs that characters who get so far then turn out not to be as fun/viable as originally hoped could be parked early to gain the lower titles.
Re: The Title Grail

Get each title for each separate character class (At least where it's actually possible) and I'll be really impressed. :p
Re: The Title Grail

Here are a few updates now. It looks like I'm really only making progress on the HC side of things:

19 Titles
Code:
D2C SC
Sir
Dame
Lord
Lady
Baron
Baroness

D2C HC
Count [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=734644"]Count Kui[/URL] drummer barb
Countess
Duke
Duchess [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=746547"]Duchess Halimede[/URL] ATMA-less passivezon
King [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=708332"]King Kongdensate[/URL] ATMA-less Digglerdin
Queen [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=733573"]Queen Ceto[/URL] Static/Orbstress

LOD SC
Slayer
Champion
Patriarch
Matriarch

LOD HC
Destroyer
Conquerer [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4572704&postcount=350"]Conquerer CryoMixalot[/URL] from Skunkbelly's It Takes All Kinds Tourney
Guardian [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=742242"]Guardian Sanguine[/URL] untwinked wind druid, allocated points in chunks

Three titles remain to complete the HC title grail...

The Duke had better be a necro, and the Destroyer had better be an assassin, for me to get at least one of each class.
Re: The Title Grail

Nicely done! And not only are you three titles away from the HC grail, but they represent two Normal and one Nightmare one. Are you willing to share any plans for their builds, or are they funky enough to be kept quiet until they're done?
Re: The Title Grail

You're doing a great job Purple, once you complete the HC titles the SC ones will be a breeze, keep it up! :)
Re: The Title Grail

As I said, once I had more than one entry I'd start my own entry for this grail. The new title's the (theoretically) easiest one to attain, I know, but she's the character I've been mostly playing recently.

Next up I'm thinking either Baron or Countess.

2 Titles
Code:
D2C SC:
Sir
Dame
Lord
Lady
Baron
Baroness

D2C HC:
Count
Countess
Duke
Duchess
King [url=http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4787560#post4787560]King Kong[/url] (Fishymancer)
Queen

LOD SC:
Slayer [url=http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7379455#post7379455]Slayer XGodly_HammurzX[/url] (Hammersin)
Champion
Patriarch
Matriarch

LOD HC:
Destroyer
Conquerer
Guardian
Re: The Title Grail

Great to see some company, welcome! And that is a nice Slayer you have there. Do you have some builds in mind for your Baron and Countess?

I'm hopeful about making some progress soon- I've got a bunch of potential Countesses and one hopeful Duke in the pipeline at the moment...
Re: The Title Grail

I have a Teslafroster build in Act 1 Hell that hopefully I can push on with to Baronhood. AR seems to be something of a problem, but I suspect the real issue could be that he's woefully underlevelled. I'm never really sure which levels are right to move onto a higher difficulty anyway, so I'm not unused to that.

As for the countess, I've been tossing (delayed-pun intended) around the idea of an enchantress who uses throwing daggers. I think it might be better suited to a Duchess attempt though, coupled with something like a few points in Static Field to give Enchant enough time to mature. I feel Countess builds are probably more fun/stylish/better if I choose level 1 and 6 skills to focus around.

I think I need to get the Guardian title with either a Barbarian or a Druid as well. With that in mind, it might be worth starting on that one soon as well. Running characters to their deaths one by one against Hell's minions will be over quicker if I start sooner.

Best of luck with your own HC attempts!
Re: The Title Grail

Two developments on the HC title grail:

The classic naked blazer Hyrokkin has defeated Diablo and the classic summoner Borasisi has defeated NM Diablo. That gives:

Code:
D2C HC
Count [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=734644"]Count Kui[/URL] drummer barb
Countess [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7433828"]Countess Hyrokkin[/URL] naked blazer
Duke [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=724972"]Duke Borasisi[/URL] ATMA-less summoner
Duchess [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=746547"]Duchess Halimede[/URL] ATMA-less passivezon
King [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=708332"]King Kongdensate[/URL] ATMA-less Digglerdin
Queen [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=733573"]Queen Ceto[/URL] Static/Orbstress

LOD HC
Destroyer
Conquerer [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4572704&postcount=350"]Conquerer CryoMixalot[/URL] from Skunkbelly's It Takes All Kinds Tourney
Guardian [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=742242"]Guardian Sanguine[/URL] untwinked wind druid, allocated points in chunks

Now just one title remains for the HC title grail! I have a character underway for that project, but her limitations mean that I need to play her in long unbroken sessions and I haven't been able to do that much yet.
Re: The Title Grail

I've now got a Destroyer to complete the HC title grail, KVSwitzer. She is a runner, eschewing TPs and WPs.

Code:
D2C HC
Count [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=734644"]Count Kui[/URL] drummer barb
Countess [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7433828"]Countess Hyrokkin[/URL] naked blazer
Duke [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=724972"]Duke Borasisi[/URL] ATMA-less summoner
Duchess [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=746547"]Duchess Halimede[/URL] ATMA-less passivezon
King [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=708332"]King Kongdensate[/URL] ATMA-less Digglerdin
Queen [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=733573"]Queen Ceto[/URL] Static/Orbstress

LOD HC
Destroyer [URL=""]Destroyer KVSwitzer[/URL] TP/WP-less WoF assassin
Conquerer [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4572704&postcount=350"]Conquerer CryoMixalot[/URL] frost zealot from Skunkbelly's It Takes All Kinds Tourney
Guardian [URL="http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=742242"]Guardian Sanguine[/URL] untwinked wind druid, allocated points in chunks

I have at least one of every class at this point, with an extra paladin and an extra sorc. There are two Frost zealots in there, which is kind of repetitive, but they are actually pretty different extremes along Frost Zealot-dom (Classic one using ITD and a no-damage dagger who was totally elemental, and an LoD one doing a physical/cold combo)

Most of them were ATMA-less, actually (not much point in ATMA for a naked character, for example!) since I really use GoMule which doesn't work with Classic characters anyway!

There are a couple in there who are reasonable candidates for the next title (Borissi the summoner seems King-able, for example) but I don't plan to have them attempt further serious progress until I have an alternate with the same title who would qualify for keeping the Title Grail satisfied.

Here's a screenshot of 8 of the 9 characters involved: Boriassi is on another machine.
Major thread necro, because I stumbled upon this one, and like it a lot. So I might give it a go. 'Like it' and 'might give it a go' can seem counterintuitive, but there are still silly things like RL going on, and important stuff like my 99ers, MFO, actually building characters around all the stuff I have gathered since joining here, ... So count me as a definitive maybe ;).

This certainly won't happen soon though, as I'm about to leave on holiday, after which there is the MFO and then probably some time spent on my 99ers and Doom/Phoenix Furywolf first.

For future reference, these are the builds I have planned so far for each title. Major remark: I know nothing about classic, as I haven't played it since LoD came out, and certainly not about 1.14 classic. So I based the list, well mostly the characters that have to beat the game on Hell, upon what I have read to be the best classic characters, and also to have 7 different character classes for the 7 titles that can be earned in Hell, and an evenly distriubution between characters classes on the whole. So here comes:

Code:
D2C SC:
Sir (normal): Paladin - Charger
Dame (normal): Sorc – Charged Boltress
Lord (nm): Necro – Poison Nova
Lady (nm): Amazon – Bowazon of some sort
Baron (Hell): Barb - WW
Baroness (Hell): Sorc – Blizz/something

D2C HC:
Count (normal): Barb – Double Throw
Countess (normal): Amazon - Daggerzon
Duke (nm): Paladin - FanaZealer
Duchess (nm): Sorc - Hydra / Orb Sorc
King (Hell): Necro - Skelliemancer
Queen (Hell): Amazon - LF

LOD SC:
Slayer (normal): Druid – PC/Rabies
Champion (nm): Assasin – Blade Fury
Patriarch (Hell): Druid - Windy
Matriarch (Hell): Assassin - Trapper

LOD HC:
Destroyer (normal): Necro - Dentist
Conquerer (nm): Druid - Summoner
Guardian (Hell): Paladin – Hammerdin (my current 99er if possible)

2 Assassins and Barbs, 3 of the other classes, 19 in total

Suggestions are more than welcome obviously.
If you've never played a Molten Boulder Druid through normal difficulty, I would swap that out with the PC/Rabies in the Slayer spot. They have supplied me with much hilarity
Just started Lady, the D2C SC NM Amazon, since I had a few minutes to spare. This sure hurt my eyes ...

So small !!! Really, what were they thinking back then?

They were thinking it was far better than the stash in the original Diablo game, and they were absolutely right. :p
Now now. In single player, any items you left in town would persist, even between game sessions. There was technically a limit to how many items could be on the ground per 'level' (including town), but it was much higher than anything you'd actually use, something over 100 anyways.

The only trick was they would disappear if you hit "New Game" (ie new character) instead of continuing your save, or if you changed difficulties (which you COULD actually do in SP, it just required a bit of a workaround).

Quite true. But you NEEDED the ground! Nothing stacked except GP (max 5000 per inventory space, IIRC), so if you aspired to buy a good weapon or armor from Griswold or Wirt, you had to spread your fortune on the ground. Potions and scrolls, IIRC, did not stack.

I shall stop typing now, lest a SERIOUS hijack occur.
I thought this was a new thread. XD Great find, T72. I have always wanted to get a King, but the classic insta-deedz from things like MSLE and Iron Maiden Knights killed so many of my characters, that I never made it.
I loved the unique titles: King/Queen/Baron/Baroness sounds like you became more of a lasting historical figure, a leader who owned land and ruled over their land and peoples (fairly and justly of course,) but ultimately adored and held as an actual protector, rather than just a fighter who may've been lost in texts of angelic battles that only certain people knew of, and many didn't believe.
That's my over-analysis of it, anyway, probably due to being very young and idealistic/imaginitive at that age. :p And I love the title of Guardian as well.
