The Forum Mafia Statistics And Awards Thread

Re: Forum mafia statistics and awards.

I think I prefer mini games.

Re: Forum mafia statistics and awards.

So you prefer to be the one holding the reins? Neat. You shouldn't give up on playing though. :)

I completely agree, as I mentioned in the game. Keep up at it and you'll adjust to the meta. You call many folks in our playgroup friends so I think the best thing you can do is learn to separate the game and make it an impersonal thing.

I was under the impression that since you are a new player you would play most games up until the point where it's your time to host. This should give you enough experience on how we do things around here to host a proper game. In my opinion, two or so games don't really give you a wide perspective of how people react and how games are hosted.

If you don't intend to play games, but just host, I don't think it's a good idea to keep you on the list, but I would like others to comment on it as well.

TC is very right. I had quite a LOT of games under my belt before I first hosted a game and while there were some things in the game people really liked, there was quite a lot that they didn't, and things that went rather unpredictably and there were a number of what I thought were really low probability events triggered by certain low probability actions that were meant to direct the story. With your background of doing live who-done-it games and such, I suspect you might come at creating a game from some of the same angles that I did.

I would really advise you to keep playing because firstly I'm certain you'll have more fun as you settle into the meta of this playgroup and secondly because you'll do a much better job with running a game the more you've played.

Personally I disagree; if you don't find playing fun, then don't do it. Playing half-heartedly or losing interest or leaving mid-game just ruins it for others. (Yep, been guilty of this, feel free to link. :p)

I think it's quite possible to be interested in the mechanics and story and run a decent game. I'd like to think that although being a terrible and infrequent player, the game I hosted weren't total train-wrecks with players berating me for half-baked mechanics.

Even if you aren't playing, you can read games and gauge reactions; if that's what you want to do.

I'm not saying just trundle up and you'll be host of the year, but I don't agree that it's necessary to play every game to be a half-decent host. Particularly if you'll hate every moment of playing.

I would suggest getting your game looked at by someone who has hosted lots of successful games before and can recognize "dumb-move-101's" EG ThunderCat. I wouldn't suggest letting him anywhere near suggesting mechanics unless you want to have players wondering why the town are all mafia and the mafia are all town. :D

Re: Forum mafia statistics and awards.

They didn't actually wonder that as far as I can remember. I recall it being a shock at the end of the game. But I could be wrong though, I've slept since then.

Re: Forum mafia statistics and awards.

Was that your game ThunderCat? That was super confusing for us lol.

Re: Forum mafia statistics.

This is kind of an odd request, but at some point I would like to "shadow" a host. I wouldn't play the game and my only participation would be to see what the host sees and to ask them questions. I feel like this would give me the big picture, which I am sorely lacking. Not thrilled with how I wasted my role in the last game, and if I'm going to play, I want to do it right.

Re: Forum mafia statistics and awards.

One thing I have to say is that encrypting things in the game thread should be banned. It's not level playing field for everybody. Not everybody is a smart 20 year old.

I'd like to hear more thoughts on this

Personally, I think it's grey and depends on the spirit of the action. I thought this was fine. If it was abused to, say, enable a person to pass messages to specific individuals with no reasonable way to break the code, that's a problem.

I agree that if Moar or I had been hit with this it would probably have been a disaster, but I actually thought it was kind of fun, especially seeing how exasperated the guys got. I imagine that there was some kind of translator to help out. And if someone hit me with a restriction that I just couldn't fathom, I would simply start squawking loudly to the mods about it.

I didn't mean post restrictions. I mean people posting encrypted messages in the game thread.

I admit I thought about constructing an information "bomb" that had a decryption key that would be constructed from my flip info. But thought it was against the spirit of not talking while dead.

I know I was guilty of this in the DT game, we were masons and lost our day talk facilitator and started talking in game thread using encrypted messages (that we'd set-up to prove we were allied). It is a grey area and we definitely pushed the boundaries that game.

Then I am 100% with Moar on this. No fair.

Re: Forum mafia statistics and awards.

I don't care either way for the encryption thing, but the fact that it is bothering multiple players should be enough to ban it from games.

I disagree. Some people don't like VIs, cops, etc, post restrictions, etc. but they're put in by mods anyway.
I think JCakes is right about the DT game and that we pushed it there, but I also think my use in this game was fine. I explained how to decode it and if it was too confusing then no one gets the answer :p

I still want to hear more opinions on it
