Ok, it's finally here !!! The results of the TC3 Hunting Tournament - Winter 2018.
Thanks a lot to all those who have participated. It was an honour to be able to host this tournament. And participation was way higher than I had anticipated, with 21 entries. Next time the goal is 30 participants .
But without further ado ... here are the results. I haven't received the results of 5 people. Hopefully they will still let me know how they did, and then I'll add them to the table. For the winner however, I'd be very surprised if it would make a difference. Take a look for yourself:
20 different TC3s, that's all the ones that can be found from the different targets available up to the cube. Or maybe he gambled one of those high qlvl set items? Incredibly impressive !!! Major congrats @NanoMist. You already won the first edition, so you definitely earn the title of 'TC3 Hunter Pur Sang'.

I started out with /p8 like normal untwinked play. I got to level 8 at Blood Raven (Yes...I did all the quests lol) and continued until I reached the Countess (Level 16).
I farmed the Countess on /p1 until I had the runes for Stealth and 2 Steels (This took forever!). I resumed at /p8 until I got the malus and got a great set of imbued gloves.
I kept finding every other gem bar Topazes for aaaages, killed Andariel at level 20 and she dropped rubbish. Killed Radament and got the cube. Up until this point, my drops were non-existent in terms of qualifiers or more than a few chipped Topazes.
At this point, I started to run Halls of the Dead for XP in the hope of reaching level 24 for the speed boost of Increased Speed and Frenzy. Turns out this was a big mistake. Frenzy's speed boost is short lived and the attack is much slower than Double Swing.
I wasted hours and it was hour 10 with only level 23 and very little else. My first shrined Perfect Topaz came around 10.5 hours in and after this, I started running shrines in earnest. I interspersed shrine runs with XP so I could finally get some faster run speed.
I then basically ran shrines and Coldcrow / Treehead Woodfist / Bone Ash / Andariel @ /p1 - /p3 until the end. I only completed my Perfect Topazes about 10 minutes before the time limit was up lol. I did get a lucky Gull Dagger which helped with less than 2 hours to go.
Then I read people have got the cube after 1 hour and all their Perfect Topazes after 3 hours (I'm like WTF!). I was sure I was near the bottom but oh well, at least I improved my Ethereal Grail!

Hestia, Firewall Sorceress, Level 23
Hestia had a much better start than Ulath in terms of finding topazes and shrining them up. However, despite lots of magic find on both Hestia and Mizan, my luck still wasn't that much better than Ulath. I found a Gull Dagger in the last hour which was helpful but could have arrived much earlier. Strangely, Bone Ash provided Greyform which was a nice change. I was only running him because my Andariel map was good, but the other targets weren't so good. Teleporting with limited mana was a bit challenging but did make for considerably faster Andariel runs. I was able to easily run Andariel on players 8, although Mizan fared much better with Stealth than 3 PTopaz BP. Sadly, many of the screenshots I thought I took, didn't actually save due to an issue I was having which seemed to be related to recent Windows 10 updates.

eth Gull - cool and handy. That was one of the first Countess runs.
The only unique TC3 grailer for me dropped shortly afterwards. Still before Andy.

Since I went with a self-imposed single pass restriction (because my brain can't handle the enormous freedom of playing any other way, plus I think that monsters you've killed should be dead after a save + reload, dammit!...) I went with the fastest character I could think of that had the merc kill almost everything (for more MF): a Curses Necro with a beefy Clay Golem.
I thought 15 hours would be too little to complete the areas up to Halls of Dead but I made it in 9.5 hours. It was very stressful, I can't say I enjoyed it most of the time but it was interesting to see that we could get there in time.

I totally don't expect people to I record partly to show what I am doing, and partly because it feels like I am enshrining my efforts, if that makes sense? In 5 years I can go 'Oh, I remember playing Cymru and triggering amplify damage with every 459th lacerator throw, and then I can go and watch some bits of his journey.

Day 3 - The Nagels
- had 0 Nagels in 1st session of 60 minutes
- during the 2nd session, found 2 Nagels (22mf & 25mf) back to back at the 15 minute mark

Day 4,5,6 - The Grind
- Andy on /p1 had too many nodrops; /p5 died too slow; so I stayed on /p3 for most of the runs
- At lvl 21, /p3 Andy died to 2 rounds of traps
- By lvl 24, /p3 Andy died to 1 round of traps + some Fire Blasts
- According to RC screenshots, I ran Rakanishu + Andy 289 times over 309 minutes
- Had a stable bosspack in the blood puddle room; but got 0 drops from them
- Poison was sucking up too many health pots, so I dropped my nice gambled gloves and used Death's Hand for Poison Resist
- Also in favor of frw, I used Hsarus' boots and belt; and eventually used the full set as soon as I found the shield for the CBF
- By the end of the 6th day, I had found all the high qlvl I could find from Andy (was missing... Pelta Lunanta/Rixot's Keen/Felloak/Bane Ashe/Blinkbat/3 sets); so I was ready to switch to Coldcrow

Day 7,8,9 - The Caves
- Decided to reroll the map for a better Coldcrow runs
- Accidentally lost a very very nice map; the caves right next to the WP, Coldcrow oddly at the crossroads intead of some far corner. Only got to run her the first time, cause I accidentally pressed 'Host a game' as soon as I left. Definitely would've been able to do sub-30s runs w/ that map =(
- New Coldcrow map was found in about 30 or so minutes; and avged 30~35 seconds depending on S&E time
- Had 1 almost-stable bosspack on route to Coldcrow; got half the drops from that bosspack
= (289mins/895mins cumulative & 5 minutes buffer for the seconds dropped in calculation and GoMule time)
Things to Note
- I was definitely lucky throughout the tourney; Shrines, Map rolls, 1st 2 Nagels etc
- With the 300~ mf on /p3 (iirc), Nagel had the drop chance of 1 in 56. Since I only ran just shy of 60 runs, I was definitely lucky in finding dual Nagels that early on
- 5 BoS & 7 Fire Blast would've been much better than 2 BoS & 10 Fire Blast I have currently
- 20 Fire Blast and 0 WoF with some in BoS would've been even better, with some more investment into energy
- Surprised that I didn't see a single Felloak, but did get lucky with 2 Torch of Iro =P
- There was a session in there somewhere, when I spent some time gambling; but if I were to do it again, I would definitely hold off gambling until I find everything I could find.
As you know from the running thread, I ran a firewall sorc again this time, but with a few improvements compared to the first tournament. The largest improvement came from questing/leveling to level 26 one hour faster than last time, allowing more time for MF runs. I also had more MF this time, using the standard 2 P Topaz Cap instead of a 20 FCR circlet. Thinking back on it now, that 20 FCR circlet I gambled in the 1st tournament wasn't a great idea, having an extra 48 MF is better.
Here's the readout, Stats/Skills are the same as last time. 25 strength for a Belt and the remaining points go into energy. 9 points into Firewall and Teleport, with the remainder into Warmth. Total MF at 272 with Gull dagger switch.

Running strategy was very simple- run Andariel until she drops all 19 TC3's that she is capable of dropping, then gamble for the remaining 4 TC3's. At 12 hours 23 minutes in, on Andariel run #1219, TC3 #19 dropped, Torch of Iro. At this point I was hyped with completing the Andariel TC3 collection, but also relieved. There was a good chance I could have reached 15 hours without finding that unique wand, and having gone 2-3 hours since finding TC3 #18, doubt was very real up until that point.
My first Run Counter crashed at 484, so I had to restart from 0. So add 484 to get the total number of runs.
With a nearly maxed stash of gold, I spent an hour+ gambling boots, leather armors, and caps. Leather armor is the best shot at gambling a new TC3, with both a Set and Unique qualifier. Tancred's boots was tougher with a Qlvl of 27, and Sander's Cap also tough due to sharing the same base with Infernal Cranium. Every red leather armor that appeared in my inventory was a tease! But, at 13:20, after 2 million gold gambled, it happened. A purple cap appeared in my inventory!

BaneAsh Bites the Druid
Started out intending to be a Rabies Druid, ended up liking Poison Creeper and playing with that and Feral Rage for the first 10 hours before respecing to Fire Druid.
4 hours 9 mins to reach the cube. Spent far too much time mucking around doing things like killing Bloodraven. Spent just over an hour running the Countess trying to get the runes for Stealth and Zephyr. Ended up with 7xTal and 4xRal, but no Eth. Had been level 9 on reaching the Countess, was level 15 when I left. Was level 17 on reaching Andy. Made Stealth as soon as I got the cube and could cube up some lower runes.
Leveled to 21 in Act 2 so I could equip Zephyr, the Eth came from cubing up some more lower runes.
Andy map was terrible, so I ran Cold Plains for some shrines, Rakanishu, Treehead (plus another shrine) and Bone Ash.
Reached level 24 with 20 pts Poison Creeper, 3 pts Lycanthropy, 1 pt Feral Rage and Werewolf.
Around the 7 hour mark I decided I wanted to be running Andy so rerolled my maps. At the 10 hour mark I hadn't had any TC3 drop for almost 90 mins and decided to respec to Fire Druid. Poison Creeper could do the job but it could be a bit erratic and wasn't great in taking Andy down quickly.
First Andy run as a Fire Druid netted me a 29% Nagel, then shortly afterwards Pluckeye dropped from a boss in the Level 2 Catacombs. A 40 min session then netted Death's Guard, Arctic Furs and Knellstriker. I was feeling pretty good about the switch to Fire Druid.
Around the 13 hour mark I decided to reroll my maps and switch to Coldcrow as there were a lot of the lower level items I still didn't have. Coldcrow delivered a Gull on the second run and then just kept on dropping TC3s that I didn't have. Getting BaneAshBites to a respectable score for a pretty inefficient 15 hours, mainly due to the very few duplicate items we found - 13 unique TC3 S/Us from a total of only 22 TC3 S/Us.

The first run was fun and with so much room for improvement I decided to enter again. Only took 2:28 to reach the cube this time, but was still almost 5 hours before we'd leveled to 24 and started doing Andy runs.
Andy dropped pretty consistently and we were quickly building a decent score. Also plenty of Nagelrings.
Around 12:45 I decided to switch to Coldcrow to bulk up the score on some lower level items. It took about 20 mins to reroll a decent map, which also had a good Rakanishu map. Our MF was up to 316% by this stage and while Coldcrow dropped plenty of TC3s, many of them were duplicates, so our score didn't change much.
Around the 14 hour mark I gambled 1+ million gold before finishing out the 15 hours with more Coldcrow/Rakanishu runs.
Despite much better use of time, being a much quicker killer and finding quite a few more total TC3 S/Us (30), we only managed to get one more scoring TC3 (14) than in our previous run

Impressive, Nanomist, really impressive !!! I'm a bit surprised though that, after getting that Sander's, you didn't go for Bone Ash in search for Blinkbat's. Wouldn't the odds of finding that off him be higher than gambling another high qlvl set item? That's just a minor nitpick though, again, very impressive run !!!
As for me, my result is somewhat dissapointing, given that I am one of the few people who also participated in the first TC3 hunting tournament. So I should know what to do. Emphasis on 'should' ... In the end I did things in the wrong order, rerolled maps way too many times, and as a consequence 'only' found 14 different qualifiers.
I started out as a fire trapper. Plan was to get to the cube asap. In retrospect I'm actually not so sure the cube is so important though. Probably easy to cube up chipped gems to flawed to save a gem shrine, but in the end gem shrines is where it's really at if you want perfect topazes. Not sure what other people think about that?
Speaking about gem shrines ... I got a very good 3 shrine map in Dark Wood. So I stayed there until I had two perfect topazes. I progressed to the cube, then got a third perfect topaz, but got impatient, so rerolled maps, thinking that I might end up with a good map which would also include a shrine on the way to for example Andariel, giving me a way to upgrade those topazes, instead of having to grind for it. Big mistake. Shrine running is too imporant, and I had such a good map, I should have gone for two more perfects.
Talking about bad decisions, another bad decision I made was to postpone getting the runes for Zephyr. On any non-sorc character, frw is almost as important as mf, so I should have gotten it right away. Now I did it after some 7 hours and lots of mf runs. I figured it would take too long, since I needed the highest rune the Countess can drop, and I needed it 3 times to cube up for the Zephyr. It turned out she dropped enough Rals in a few runs. Maybe I was extremely lucky, but I doubt it.
Next mistake: I decided to respec to DTalon, as that was my initial thought. Problem: I was only level 22 at that point, but had tried out my build in a calculator using lvl 25. So yeah, less DTalon kicks, less BoS . I leveled to 23, but was still 2 skill points away from 4 kick DTalon, and decided to leave it at that, since for some reaons I suddenly figured that it wouldn't matter at /p1, and there wasn't a reason to go higher. Wrong again obviously, as drop odds do increase at higher settings for Andy. Way to go ... So I ended up with a character that was less strong than I would have thought, and less stronger than the trapper probably would have been. This was even made worse by the fact that I tried to gamble for Greaves, didn't get any to spawn in some 20 or 30 tries, and my conclusion was that they couldn't spawn for a lvl 23 character. Wrong again, as I'd find out later, when I tried again. They just don't spawn much. This also meant a big difference for my damage output.
Anyway, I was talking about rerolling. After only 2 tries I got a very good Andy map and above average Coldcrow map, so I ran those targets for a bit. Up to that point I had only found Hotspurs very early in the game. My first mf runs netted a 24% mf Nagelring after only a few Andariel runs, soon followed by a Knell Striker and grailer for me:

Second session, almost 4 hours in, started well, with 2x Infernal Cranium and 22% mf Nagelring. Coldcrow dropped an insane amount of yellow daggers, but to my frustration (as finding Gull as soon as possible was the core of my tactic) not a golden one.
So I started having doubts about my tactic again, rerolled again, got a good Rakanishu map after a few tries, and did him and Tristram for some 15 minutes. Side note: I wasn't impressed with Tristram, and don't recall ever getting something good there anyway, so I wonder if that zone is worth it for this tournament.
Anyway, I rerolled once again, got a very good 2 shrine Dark Wood map and ran that until I got 2 more perfect Topazes. At that point I was at some 200% mf.
I rerolled again, because I was determined to get that Gull, and figured Coldcrow would be the best source for it. Not only the entrance to the Cave, but also Bishibosh was next to the waypoint, so I included him in my runs as well. I got
which I would also get from Coldcrow 3 times in 30 minutes. I also got Arctic Furs, 2x Rixot's Keen and the set buckler all in one hour, so that was definitely a good session. However, I wasn't getting what I wanted, so started rerolling yet another time. Silly amount of rerolls already, right?
After a few tries I got a very good Treehead Woodfist and Countess map, so I ran both until I could make that Zephyr I was talking about. Only a few runs in this happened:
Oh, the irony . But very happy with it nonetheless.
After that, with a good amount of mf and a lot of the low qlvl qualifiers already found, it was clear that Andariel should be my main focus. So I started rerolling once more. And that went horribly bad. After quite some time I found a somewhat decent map, which I ran for a while, resulting in

in quick succession. I also got two more Nagels, one of which was an improvement.
At that point, after reading a few other posts about run times on Andy, I decided I still needed a better map. So I spent more than 1 hour rerolling, with nothing to show for it, not even close. I got so fed up with it, that I decided I'd check Andy, Rakanishu, Treehead and Coldcrow, and run the target for which I'd get a good map first. That turned out to be Coldcrow.
I knew I should probably keep looking for a good Andy map, but like I said, I got so fed up with rerolling that I just wanted to grind a target. Moreover, since I knew that winning or even getting close was quite improbable, and I was still lacking one TC3 item for my grail, Biggin's Bonnet, I figured that Coldcrow was a good target to run.
The good thing about the map I rolled then, was that, although not perfect, it wasn't too bad, and I had at least 1 extra boss pack, probably even more, while going after Coldcrow. A Hand of Broc dropped quite fast, indicating I made the right decision. I found several more qualifiers, but too many yellow clubs and hats (main items I was still missing from her, next to the more rare Short Staff and Wand) to my taste. Really, if you're running something like Pindle or Pits, and think you are close because yellow items from a good base drop quite often, think again !!! Coldcrow is when you think you are close all the freakin' time ...
But finally it happened ...
Main goal of my tournament, finding those two grailer TC3s, accomplished !!!
I had two more hours to go, and with ToI, Bane Ash and Felloak still missing, I figured my best bet was to just keep going for Coldcrow. In the end they didn't drop, and I gave up, after some 14.5 hours. I did get a eth Pelta Lunata for my eth grail, so that's something ...
So yeah, overall my luck in terms of drops was as to be expected I think, but my performance wasn't. Let's just say that gives me a good reason to organize another TC3 tournament sometimes in the future, so I can do it properly !!! The amount of participants, their enthusiasm and the overall fun that this tournament is, are enough reason to have plans for another one of this tournament at some point obviously .
O yes, one final note about my merc: I had one, but had the impression I might as well go without one. Maybe for Andy runs, it's different, but other than that he wasn't even there when I made the killing blow, so ... Not sure what other people think about the role of the merc in this tournament?

Thanks! Bone Ash's Blinkbat's drop rate is rather low, about 1 in 5000 with decent MF. Gambling a leather armor gives me 1 in 2000 chance for Blinkbat's and also a 1 in 1000 chance at Vidala's, so that's a 1 in 667 chance at getting another qualifier. Leather armors cost 5-6K gold each to gamble, which is about the average amount I can farm from Andariel in a single run. Let's say Andariel + gambling time takes twice as long as a Bone Ash run, that would make gambling come out ahead by far. Not really worth testing and getting more concrete numbers in my opinion, this was just the tail end of the 15 hour session.
Edit: Factoring in Tancred's boots Qlvl 27 and my Clvl 26, I only had a 4 in 10 chance of gambling a boot that can spawn Set, with an overall chance of 1 in 2500. So that's about even with Bone Ash.
And just to look at that Sander's Cap, it is a rarity of 3 versus Infernal's rarity of 7, so a 3 in 10 chance there. That's 1 in 3333 to gamble, I definitely got lucky there.

I should have went more with the tips given in the thread about getting up to speed quicker. Having poop luck with gem shrines didn’t help anything either. I had fun doing this though, and Pelts Lunata was an overall grailer, but unfortunately doesn’t count for my 99’er Sorc’s grail list.
I really wanted a Bane Ash and Knell Striker. I had decent maps, but my slow start as far as getting a decent amount of MF really hurt me. I usually take it kinda easy at first starting a new character and it was hard to get out of that. If I ever get a chance to do this again I will be in much more of a hurry.
It has been a long time since I participated in an SPF tournament. When I first read this idea, I think my mind just stopped at “create a new character.”
Then it (my mind) said “let’s make a throw barb!” And I totally agreed. I had always wanted a throw barb. There was some other vague thought about it being neat to maybe find some grailers, or an extra Gull dagger.
What I’m saying is: my planning wasn’t all that involved. I did benefit from reading the discussion in the other thread though, and pushed right on through to get the cube. It only took about 2 hours of my game play!
In hindsight, I probably could have kept my original map. Treehead Woodfist was right next to the Dark Woods WP; I had some shrines near WPs to upgrade topaz; Andariel wasn’t too bad, but not that good either; and I actually had a short and easy route to the cube room in Halls of the Dead, so whatever that superunique is who guards the chest. Yet after a while I decided to start rerolling my map. Eventually I got one that wasn’t too bad – Andy was much better, Treehead was a little farther (although it took me a while to realize that), and I was getting some gem shrines along the way.
I do remember getting 23% MF gloves on one of my very first gambles. My MF slowly improved overall as the character progressed. I only found 1 nagel ring, and that was a 15% roll – pretty lame.
My biggest annoyance was gambling a good throwing weapon. It took 7 or 8 hours just to get a rare balanced axe. Fortunately I could easily do /p3 even with a couple magic ones, likely because of this cool circlet I found:
But that meant I would not get any magic find from my helmet. I never did reach that dilemma though, since I only managed to get 3 pTopaz in the ~8.5 hours that I played. I think only one of my TC3 items came from Andariel; the rest were mainly questing. Despite investing 4 skill points, I did not get anything good from Find Item. I finished with 157% MF.
I did have fun with this character, but I can only run targets so many times before I get bored. And between real life and other games I never quite plugged away at enough time. It has gotten me a little bit back into D2 in general; I finished NM with an untwinked, single-pass character the other night and plan to keep playing her.
TorcCairn will see some play in the future. I might even continue him on the tournament rules for a few more hours to see how I compare with the big runners in this tournament! But I’ve always wanted a throw barb; I can at least get him into nightmare with available gear right now, and I look forward to having some fun with a slightly oddball build.
