Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge

Ok Hrus, i recieved Milosz.

Wolron: The only time i remember getting that error, was a long time ago i tried to rename a character with atma, and it wouldnt open right after that. Hard telling what could be causing that.

Bishop had an uneventful trip through Hell. Passed on to sirpoopsalot.

I guess I got my instant karma as the HellForge spit out an El rune. O well, just saving up my luck for Hell difficulty.

Does anyone understand the complaint about character version?? What is character version?? More importantly, why could this one character have the problem with my diablo and not with skunkbelly's diablo??

I may have to expire with Gertrude:sad2:

It would be tragic to leave just because of the file format problem. Does the character appear ok in ATMA? How about opening the character in ATMA, making some changes, saving it in ATMA, then trying to open it in Diablo? I don't know how "character version" works but it sounds like a pretty mysterious problem.

received - but you forgot to strip the merc's items. Do you need me to return the mule, or just delete them?

Could the problem be more with the creator of the character not being compatible with your Diablo install? Have you tried receiving a file directly from sirpoopsalot?

I knew I was forgetting something. Even opened him twice to check. I got items off of my backup. Go ahead and delete.

Thanks

merc items deleted.

hmmm, I've been very careful to ensure that I've clicked my 'vanilla' shortcut each time (IIRC, RRM is prohibited)... Also, the fact that waflob, EJB, and anyone else in between didn't have difficulties would imply the original .d2s was 'good'...

Nevertheless, I've sent wolron a new .d2s character, as well as the .d2s file from Gertrude-Stein that was originally sent to waflob. Not sure if it'll help, but anything's worth a try at this point to try and isolate the cause of the problem...

The character didn't end up with Mephisto's Stone, or a Cube from a different difficulty did he? It's a long stretch I know, but I could see for some random reason only one person's install caring about something like that for no apparent reason.

Jarrell cruised his way through act IV. The hellforge gave *drumroll* an El.

Heh, it's only normal anyway. In any case, Jarrell is now passed to HP_Sauce. (mmm, best sauce for french fries). And Ignatow is waiting for his turn.

Well, SirP shipped me two files as a test. One was his version of Gertrude Stein at level 19 when he finished Act 1. It had the same "Bad Character Version" message when I tried to bring it up. THe other file was a test file that he generated. It worked fine. Hopefully no one else will have problems with this file, but it sure bothers me that my version of Diablo is acting differently from the others that are between SirP and me.

Of course, I cannot check to see if HP-Sauce's suggestion about a cube from a different difficulty could explain it. Maybe SKunkbelly can check that on his version.

The Act I version won't have a cube so it can't be that. Have you tried looking at it in ATMA to see if there are any differences between Gertrude and your other characters?

I'm guessing it's ATMA related somehow. The test character I created was only edited within D2, but of course Gertrude-Stein was lasted edited/saved in ATMA (when I stripped her items/gold before I sent her to waflob). Perhaps there's some subtle, conflicting, wierd difference between how my machine installed the ATMA application and wolron's installation - different library versions used during install, etc.

Definitely a wierd bug - I say swap chars with Skunk and move on. Also, you could try to report it to Blizzard, but I'm pretty sure they'll say "quit using 3rd-party h4xx, you noob."

Bishop is rolling along nicely. Just got the WSK2 waypoint, with no significant difficulties. I had a very lucky Pindle drop (Twitchthroe), so once I killed Nihl, my merc got an armor upgrade (via the personalization quest). Now all I need is to get him some leech...

I think Gertrude was the one I received without a cube. I gave her a cube from another character of mine and then when I got the cube from Waflob in a separate mail, rather than moving hers back to the original character, I just gave the new one to the character I borrowed hers off...easier shuffling.

For some reason it could be the cube after all. I no longer have the mail with the cube sent along, but there's an outside chance that could be it? Perhaps remove the cube and then try playing her...that would narrow it down and it'd be easy to get another (or get Waflob to send it to you if he still has it)

If it was mea culpa...sorry for the hassle. :(

Oh, and assuming Frost doesn't get dramatically improved, I'd prefer Act5 than Act 1 NM. Much fewer boss pack and each with less attributes but particularly because if you want, you can put on about 20 levels which REALLY gives you some options about fixing and changing character direction.

Butz. :dunce:

Butz, I don't think it was the cube. Wolron had the same issue with the cube-less Gertrude that I sent him (she had just completed Act1 normal), so it seems to be something incompatible between his & my computers/D2/ATMA.

Bishop's gone as far as I care to take him. He's been passed on to waflob.

BTW, I'm pleased that my first significant HC attempt at least made Destroyer. I figure Conqueror is a reasonable goal for this tourney, so I'm 1/2 way there.

Edit: @Wolron, I tried to open Gertrude's .d2s file that you emailed back - and I received the same error message that you do. I noticed that the name is slighly different "Gertrude-Stein" vs. "Gertrude_Stein" ("-" vs. "_"). Was that change made in Windows or ATMA?

Ofcourse, the test.d2s character works fine. I've made a change in ATMA and saved it, then sent that one back. Just to see if it is indeed an ATMA issue, or something else.

@all, I'm at a loss on this one. I'm thinking it is indeed a conflict somewhere within ATMA - perhaps Wolron upgraded his version to the current version (or didn't uninstall the old version before installing the new one); I installed 5.05 from scratch.

If anyone else has any ideas or suggestions for isolating/avoiding this, let us know. It's somewhat disconcerting. Hopefully, this won't occur on any the other tourney characters I've worked with... :undecided:

Ai received and she's up and running. I've actually never played an Assasain before (or even spelled one) and I must say I'm having a blast thus far.

I'm also really excited because we get to keep an item in this act. Had a quick question about this. Can the item for personalization be placed in an extended quarentined stash and then moved back on. Or must the item pool remain taking up room in my inventory?

Thanks

Also had a suggestion about Gertrude. If someone should drop from the tournament again, maybe we can keep that character and remove Gertrude instead to avoid future incidents.

Milozs is going to have to be slow going. The skills arent very good, and my weapon is even worse. Looks like im going to be using deathspade to kill diablo.
Oh well should be fun.

The copy that I have is "Gertrude_Stein". Where did you see the Gertrude-Stein ?

I think it has to stay in the in-game stash until it has been personalized.

That was the original filename, but I see it's been renamed in my yahoo sent-items folder, so hyphen's probably an illegal character at some point down the line. It's also auto-renamed in my original email to waflob. So, I don't think that's it.

Were you able to access testtest.d2s again?
