Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge

OK, everyone except Hrus has finished act 3, so everyone except Hoop should be in act 4.

Depending on how many people complete act 4 in the next couple days, I may give the go-ahead to start act 5 prior to the holiday. We'll see.

Only 1 death through act 3...not bad at all.

Skunkbelly was probably right in his comment ...

"Well, I for one think I'd rather play him in act 1 NM than act 5 Normal... no Ancients, no Baal, frenzytaurs, no Lister..."

So, you have a major decision... take up the challenge of Act 5 with an unimproved Frost, or make him your improvement project. I can hardly wait to see what you decide to do. I'm hoping for the improvement project.:wink3:



 
EJB and I have a problem which we may be able to straighten out with a retransmission of Gertrude Stein. Just in case that does not fix it, has anyone else experienced this:

I received gertrude and saved her to my diablo save directory (as always). I went into diablo and tried to start gertrude. Instead of starting, I got this message...

UNABLE TO ENTER GAME. BAD CHARACTER VERSION.

I have requested a retransmission. That may fix it, but has anyone experienced this??? Note that we have already successfully transmitted three other characters so this should have worked fine.

I checked the file and it looks fine. Of course, about all I could check was the .d2s extension and the properties screen.

EDIT: Since others are sending along their Act 5 characters, I will be emailing HD to Purple_Locust in a couple minutes.

I resent her...I checked and she still opens fine for me...
I will be online for a while this morning..bills and such... let me know if she worked this time...

Still the same result! I suggest you send the file to skunkbelly and see if he can bring it up. I sort of hope he can't. Otherwise, it is my problem and I have no idea what to do.

One other thought. Try playing gertrude and then resave her and try sending again. Maybe that will cleanse her:undecided:

No luck. Same result. If you have another character (not for this tournament), try sending another character. If that works, then it is just gertrude. If it has the same result, then it is some incompatibility between your diablo and mine (but it worked before!!!).

So.... which one of you installed new software on your computer in the last ~week? It doesn't have to be D2 related - comps are completely capable of crapping out 'cause of crazy conflicts and compatibility issues.

(Alliteration, FTW) :grin:

If you installed something new, are you capable of uninstalling it? Also, Wolron, is it only Gertrude-Stein, or all of your D2 characters?

No new software for me. Also, I have been playing other characters in other tournaments with no difficulty. In fact, I still had a copy of Ignatow, so I loaded it up and there was no problem. EJB sent me another file (it was softcore however) and it worked fine. I have not heard yet if SKunkbelly got the gertrude file. If that file does not work on his machine, then I think EJB can try to resurrect the most recent .org file and hopefully it will work.

Well, Skunkbelly received Gertrude and was able to load her. He forwarded Gertrude to me and I was not able to load her. It appears that I will have to reinstall Diablo and hope that works.
 
OK, I uninstalled Diablo. I installed Diablo. I applied the expansion. I downloaded the patch. I applied the patch. I applied the runeword mod and changed my shortcut to agree with the instructions on the runeword mod. Alas, trying to start up Gertrude Stein still results in the same message "Unable to enter game. Bad Character version."

Does anyone understand the complaint about character version?? What is character version?? More importantly, why could this one character have the problem with my diablo and not with skunkbelly's diablo??

I may have to expire with Gertrude:sad2:
 
Would it be kosher for someone else to play Gertrude, and you play their assigned character for this round? Seems like a bum wrap to get kicked out because of some mysterious file issues.
 
Wish I could help, Wolron. Something must be corrupted.

Olga is done with act 4, and I'm glad to be done with her. Bomb alert, IMHO. Could be I still just have a lot to learn about assassins.

At least against Diablo she was interesting, and I burnt up 3/4 of my moolah, resurrecting my merc in an arduous affair. And big D dropped me rares. What else is new.

Freekje should have mail.
 
Wolron: here's my solution to this...

1. When I receive my act 5 character (Quasimodo) I'll send him to you. If you can play him, then we'll just swap Gertrude Stein and Quasimodo. If you can't, then we'll cross that bridge etc. etc.

2. After we've both completed act 5, we'll send the characters along to whoever should've received them before we swapped (i.e., in my case, scarred_life would get Quasimodo). That way, we do the least amount of damage to the order of the characters.

EJB sent the file to SKunkbelly and it worked there. EJB sent the file to me several times and it never worked for me. Skunkbelly (after loading it successfully) sent it to me from his hard drive (not forwarded) and it would not work. That is why I reinstalled. Considering the fact that SKunkbelly will play gertrude and then pass it on to Purple Locust, it will be interesting to see if anyone else has trouble with the file. It is the only file that has ever given me trouble.

But, your question involved sending it to someone else after I varified that it would not work on my machine. That has not been done. I will try sending the file that did not work to EJB and see if he can bring it up after it has visited me. You never know.
