A little while ago, I found the IK soul cage with my untwinked 99er. I needed a break from her anyway, so I figured I would make this build. It always seemed like it would be fun. He is in hell now, and fully geared. Below is a readout of his equipment and his current merc.

I am having a lot of fun with the play through so far, but I do have a couple of questions about the character. First, does anyone have a better setup of rings and amulets for this build? I like the way he is set up, but his chance to hit is already starting to fall off. I am still in A3 jungles, so I don't want my % to hit getting too low by the time I am in A5.

The second question is whether a normal blessed aim merc would be more useful than a NM might merc. The might aura doesn't seem to add a ton of physical damage right now, and I'm wondering if hitting at 95% would actually be a better idea.

I appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

Well... You are using IK set which is portrayed as that old school top tier set for WW barb. It's trash in my opinion and you will have problems doing anything with that char later on imo. I know many people want to play it, but it just isn't good and you can't make it even close to comparable to other setups (mainly dual grief).

When it comes to rings... You don't need CBF on a WW barb, cause WW IAS breakpoints aren't affected by being chilled/frozen at all. It definitely helps with running around, but the slower you move in WW, the better your dps. I know that you went for that high AR setup with raven frost and metalgrid, cause of your low lvl and low CTH, but it will be hard to fix that no matter what. You are using Carrion Wind for life leech, right? Maybe you can just use some rare life leech ring with good mods, especially AR. Highlord's with it's deadly strike should help too i think. Agelic combo should give you some substantial amount of AR too. You get life leech and mana leech from set bonus on gloves, so you can switch some of your jewelery imo.

The main problem with IK set is very low physical dmg. That's why might doesn't help at all, cause if you multiply a very low number by something, you won't suddenly get a big number (at least in this case xD). Ogre Maul is 20 WSM weapon, 40 IAS on it puts it at -20 final IAS for WW. The 2 last breakpoints for WW are -30 and -60 for 2h weapons. You can get to the last breakpoint with 2 shael runes or you can put 1 jewel with IAS in it to reach the second to last bp and maybe an eth rune on top of it, to help with actually hitting stuff? The chance to hit formula really screws things up, mainly because of lvl difference between the attacker and the defender. Your lvl 81 char will have problems hitting stuff because of that. That's also why Grief is so nice, cause it ignores defense of most monsters, so you don't have to care about AR that much.

My thoughts are a little bit chaotic, but i think i said what was needed.

@ResTTe I know that IK is not anywhere close to top tier when it comes to a WW setup. It is just a build that I have always wanted to play. That being said, I am cruising through P3 hell with no real problems. The kill speed isn't super fast, but I haven't even come close to being in trouble.

The idea behind the raven frost and metalgrid are just for AR and some extra def/resists. I know angelic set will give more AR overall, but I was trying to do something with a little more style. I am still considering switching them out for the angelic set, as that should completely eliminate my problems with AR. The carrion wind was because of the LL, but also because it seemed pretty thematic with the rest of the build. Now that I know the twisters cannot trigger during WW (and the % damage to mana is useless against mana burn), I am considering swapping it out for a BK ring.

My ogre maul should already be at the last WW breakpoint, since it has two jewels of fervor in it with random damage mods. I didn't know about frozen not affecting WW breakpoints though, so that is awesome. I am still tinkering around with the character. Thanks for all of your advice.

I thought you are having problems, that's why i went a little bit harder on that build XD I would go for more AR anytime, cause your res should be fine without metalgrid, especially if you swap Carrion Wind for some rare ring with res.

Was thinking both 2h hammers are 20 WSM weapons for some reason. I looked at WSM tables so many times, yet i still forget some things.

You can probably go with 1 rare ring with res and angelic's combo or try highlord's with 2 rare AR rings. Depends on what your char is lacking.

I love the IK set! IMO the strongest of all class specifics😁

It's pretty hard to go wrong with the set, especially now when there's no IM. It's as cookie-cutter as it can get.

My 2 cents:

Having CBF is ok. Sure you can hit enemies more times without it, but it comes at the expense of mobility. Especially since you're not teleporting around.

Metalgrid + 1 ravenfrost is ok as well, in terms of AR needed. You should be fine as long as you have 10K+. Else, you might want to try out Highlords. The added DS chance may improve killspeed. I think the set provides enough leech, but if you're still not convinced, the Carrion Wind is ok. A good rare/craft is definitely better.

Replace all your skillers with Sharps (Steels are second choice). Or Fine small charms. This is to compensate the low-ish weapon damage as well as add AR.

Replace the Spirit with another Echo weapon. I assume you've yet to shop for another 😅

Stay with the Might merc. As mentioned, you could get 10K plus AR easily. You need to squeeze as much damage as you can with the set. Plus, the merc benefits from the added damage as well (On top of the high Def/Life it's going to have).

For my build, I went with Highlords + 2x ravenfrosts. Together with my charms, getting 10K+ AR is easily achieved. All armor sockets are filled with ED/Strength jewels. Weapon is filled with AR/ias jewels.

A few quick ideas:
  • Demons limb in stash / cube: lvl23 enchant better than the lvl5 from armour
  • Level a bit in Pits to offset the level gap to monsters for better chance to hit
  • As others noted already: dump the skillers for more Steel / Sharp GC's
  • 2 Pdiamond IK helm

I had some time yesterday, and I finished hell Baal last night at lvl85. I still might play around with the character a bit, but the few pit runs I tried were much slower than I was expecting. Either way, I am glad that I finally played this build. It was a lot of fun to be such a tank of a character, even if the kill speed suffered. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Congratulations! My experience is pretty much in line with yours - not the fastest killer, but quite safe and fun to play with a bit of patience.
