Salvation or Conviction?

I am going to rebuild my paladin to solo ubertrist and I only want to invest in one of those skills. What are the differences between the two?

Thanks in advance

Conviction: Negate Meph's conviction so your resists AND defense stay intact. Defense is really only important if you accidently wake 1 of the other 2 Ubers while killing Meph. But Conviction will cost 15-20 skill points. Meph's conviction is lvl 20 so you need at least 21 to negate his (including +skill equip). Your conviction will only benefit you and no else in your party but your going solo so who cares.

Salvation: With just 1 point and +skill equip you can add 80+ to your resistances. You'll still have to stack resistances or use Treachery to get them back to max but it gets you quite a bit the ways there for just a few skill points. Salvation will benefit any other party members should you choose to not go solo occasionally.

I dont really need to lower their defence since I'll be using smite on them right?

Seeing as your Smiter will be used only for solo Trist runs, I don't see much of a point to investing much in either of your suggested auras.

Conviction's only real use in Trist is to cancel Meph's. Otherwise you don't benefit much from it.

Salvation is decent but its bonuses dry up with additional points very quickly. As PlayWithHonor suggested, I would say put one point into it and leave it there. If I remember correctly I calculated a 1+15 (from +Skills) to give +106 Res, and 20+15 to give +115. That's 19 Skill points for 9 Res. Of course you won't have +15 without a Torch in your inventory, but the gap still won't change that much. The bonuses from heaping points into Salvation are minimal.

As Dennis said, I would stick with Fanaticism as a main aura, with one-point Salvation for when you need it.

i agree completly, i use salvation against meph and then fanat on the other 2 to make em go down faster and to make sure my life tap stays up.

One consideration... if you're leveling your toons the old-fashioned way (you know, by actually playing the game and killing monsters yourself), Conviction has another point in its favor- it absolutely rocks PvM. Maxed Conviction + slvl 4 Zeal + Rift Scepter on switch = perfect PvM PI/IM solution for any build.

Thanks guys. I have another question. How should i deal with physical immunes? I tried venegance on my old character but it wasn't effective enough to take them down. I usually use zeal + grief pb/lw pb with fanat on (and 4 bo cta on switch). Any suggestions?

My pally uses conviction and I wear a Dream helm when not doing bosses. This gives tons of elemental damage and takes care of the immunes quickly. You also could carry elemental damage charms. Alternatively, you could have a weapon with lots of elemental damage on switch with a dream shield.

A couple of the unique rings and amulets give elemental damage to your attacks which will take care of PIs.

Agreed. Get a high elemental damage weapon on switch. Good ones off the top of my head are Barraners Star, Gimmershred, Rift in a scepter is real nice.

Gimmershred combined with Conviction makes a great combination and you can throw them at Oblivian Knights. Good way to not get killed by Maiden.

If you socket Rift in a normal-quality scepter, its damage will be so pathetic that you can Zeal without fear around OKs, too.

20 points in Conviction + 4 points in Zeal + Rift War Scepter = all-everything solution. PIs, IM, it makes no difference- that baby cuts through them like a hot knife through butter. Not bad for 30 skill points, tops. Gimmers are another option, but if you're throwing the Gimmers, Rift will be quicker (if you're Zealing, they'll have a comparable killspeed).

For more fun, if you maxed your Conviction you could get a well-gear A3 Cold Merc, which will kill just fine as long as you have Conviction active. You could also make a Rift Scythe for your merc and give it to him in PI or IM areas, so he can keep on killing when you switch over to Conviction.
