Running Two Copies of D2 on one computer

I tried this method and can get two chars into the same game. However my 2nd character can never stay longer than 1 min. It always get "Your connection is interrupped", while the 1st char see it as "xxxxxx dropped due to time out"

Any way to solve this problem pls?

At first glance it would sound like both instances of the game are using the same bnet cache file. Check to make sure you're running the game from two different directories. If you're using a shortcut file, check to make sure the target line in the properties are different.

How do you start the game ? Make sure that both the target and the working directory entries in the properties of the start menu entry or desktop icon refer to different locations.

@Krischan: I'm pretty sure the two Diablo.exe my shortcuts pointing to are in two different directories.

@Orphan: yes, it still time out even if I just use the 2nd copy to make game.

hmm, when I do user-switches (not with diablo running though), the internet-connection of the user that I leave gets disconnected. Seems the same happens here too...

This must be something else, cause he times out even if running only the second installation of the game. In your case either will drop, when u switch user...

Don't know how many times he has installed both games, but if i were him i would uninstall both of them and try it once more. Or atleast the later diablo installation.

Anyway, works fine with 3 sets of cd-keys too. So, u can bring 3 chars with this method...

I don't mean to say you are an idiot, but can you make a screenshot of both properties windows ? It's often the "stupid" mistakes which are overlooked all the time :azn:. Sometimes it happens to me that I'm searching for something and even though it lies on the table, obvious for everybody, I have to look there more than once to notice it. My personal record was four or five times :azn:.

Another explanation might be that something is wrong with the NAT settings of your router, if you are using one. However, in that case the same should happen if you try to download two big files at the same time, for example.

No problem, Krischan :wink3: . I have taken screenies of both properties windows but yet to put them on photobucket. Once I've done it I will post the links here. Thx for help

Hmm, looks OK.

You are starting the two game instances via two separate Windows user accounts, right ?

BTW, you can make a screenshot of the active window with Alt-PrintScreen, so you don't have to cut out the window :wink3:

I guess I would get caught by someone when I looked at the pic....Since I seldom take screen shot of windows I could never remember that command hehe

I sorted it out

Well, things are fine now. Few days ago I played around with various things and found that when I use a windows acct. with administer right to run the 2nd copy of D2 then things are fine. When the windows acct. has only limited right, the game it runs dropped out in about a minute. Just hope to share this.

I'm having a problem getting this setup properly.
-I have 2 copies installed with 2 sets of CD Keys in different directories.
-I log into BNet with key1 on windows account 1, and create a game.
-Then I switch users to windows account 2 and log into bnet with key2.
-I then go to join the same game as my first account and my game drops out with an unhandled exception or some other D2 error (can't remember exactly right now).
-I then switch back to windows account 1 and try to click back into D2 and it drops out with the same error.

Any ideas?

First of all, I'm on dialup. I get disconnected when I switch users and recieve the message:

You have been disconnected from NetZero (don't laugh...) because another user has logged in to Windows

Anyone know of a way to stay online when switching?

Hi spidermangeo, welcome to the forums.

You can edit your posts for up to an hour afterwards. Do not double post straight after one another, especially in the short time-frame you did. I've deleted the second one this time around.

Sometimes it takes people a little while to get a chance to respond to any queries. Most people on this forum are usually doing other things at the same time, but they'll always try to respond eventually.

With regards to your question, you'll need to use two different directories on the on the profiles. The second copy of the game needs to be installed to a different directory than the first copy.

I'm having the same problem and I just now realized that the second windows acct. has limited rights indeed! Switching the rights now and testing in a second, I'll be sure to tell the outcome.

EDIT: Seems to work now!! I think you should point this out in the original post.

my problem (lol)...

Im tryin 2 run to copies of d2,this is my situation:
-i have all the necessary cd keys
-i do not have my expansion cd at the moment, however, i have the expansion installed on my comp, with all the extra files (video.mpq etc).

Is there some file that has the currently used cd key within it, or something along those lines? If there was i could make a second copy of the directory, and put my second cd key into this new directory?

Basically i cant do the installation process to make the second d2 directory :undecided:
