I was just taking a look at the D2 mpq files and I bumped into some things that have been removed from the game.

First of all there is the shrines.txt.
There was three shrines that were disabled, Shrine of Enirhs, Mana and Health Boost. Shrine of Enirhs was supposed to reverse your character name (Enirhs <-> shrinE), would've been so cool. Mana and Health Boost shrines were supposed to double your current mana/life. Imagine.. 10000 life *gasp*

Then there was the txt file about NPC/Boss speech lines:
I noticed Natalya had few lines I had never seen before. In them Natalya mentioned that her next assignment was to travel to the Barbarian lands of the North, but she couldn't tell why. I also found this comment in Natalya's gossip section: "Natalya is 'waiting' to receive orders to go after Baal in the beginning. She (or her superiors) won't know that Baal (Tal Rasha ) is still in the world until the end of this Act."
Until now I had always wondered where she went and why. Now I know.

Then there were the lines that SU's and Bosses say when you engage them. There were quite a few I have never heard so they must have been removed (atlest some of them were marked as unused).

Blood Raven:
"Matron Andariel commands your death."

Duriel:
"I am your doom!"

Also Izual (Does he even have lines that are used?):
"Save yourself!"
"Leave me!"
"You cannot help me!"

Diablo:
"Aggh… The smell of life surrounds me."

There was also a text file 'UniqueTitle' that had different titles (Magistrate, Duke, King, Warlord). I guess they were intended to be used in the random unique monster names.

Also I noticed that all acts have a name besides the 'Act X'.
Act I: The Sightless Eye
Act II: The Secret of the Vizjerei
Act III: The Infernal Gate
Act IV: The Harrowing
Act V: (Couldn't find txt file)

Then I noticed that in the SetItems.txt there is no Sander's set, but instead there is McAuley's Folly, Riprap, Superstition and Taboo.

Anyone else have more of these non-existant, removed or hidden thingies to add?


PS. Where can I find the animations for different spells/skills? And in case I already found them, how can I view/convert a *.dcc file?
 
There is a ton of this stuff in the mpq's. Anything from text to rune words not enabled to unused armor and weapons. I'm sure that some players here are familiar enough... but I think that the modder's at the Phrozen Keep can probably tell you more if you are really interested... I don't have the link but if you go to yahoo.com and search for "Phrozen Keep" you'll find it.
 
Oh yes, there is alot of hidden/unused stuff in there. New in 1.10 is Tempered, you can find a few recipes for the new item quality in cubemain.txt. They're disabled.

There's also a damage type not used: burn. It's basically fire dmg over time, no idea if it works as it should.

The prefixes Grinding and Faithful were originally one of many dmg/Clvl or def/Clvl prefixes. They've been renamed too.

What's also left in MagicSuffix.txt are suffixes with elemental absorb and elemental resist/Clvl. Plus a few with dex/Clvl and/or str/Clvl. The other disabled suffixes are charges and Defense/time.

Body parts can be found in misc.txt, disabled, but work just fine in mods.

A couple of funny monster names can be found in monai.txt, like Wussie or Buffy.

A fun fact (monequip.txt): Flying Scimitars spawn equipped with a rare scimitar.

monprop.txt: The reason Council Member hydras hurt more than in 1.09, 100% Fire Mastery. This also adds to FE if it's there.

A couple of diabled monsters can be found in monstats.txt: Chaoshorde and Gorgons.

SetItems.txt: McAuley worked on D2 as something, you can found where he worked on in the credits. I don't remember.

Shrines.txt: even more disabled shrines and their effects:
Health Exchange: "takes 1/2 health, gives 5 times that number to current mana (OUT)"
Mana Exchange: "takes 1/2 mana, gives 5 times that number to current health (OUT)"

Try to find the 1.09 skills.txt, the descriptions of some skills were rather funny. Especially Nova :lol:

You can find disabled SuperUniques in SuperUniques.txt.

There are plenty of hidden strings to be found in all of the .tbl files. Good luck finding them all :)

It seems that he was a Level Designer and a 'Blizzard North Player'.
 
How can I extract those files from the MPQs?
I suppose there is an utility out there in the Wild, can you give me some directions?

I'd be rather curious to have a look at those .txt files :)

the string.tbl is actually what gets displayed in the game, hence McAuley became Sander's. Bartuc's Cut-Throat is actually called Bartuc's ChopChop(or something) IIRC. there's a lot more set/unique items with different names.

@Vemp: you can use ATMA's files with excel to view the .txt files. ATMA uses the actual game file (that's why it's less buggy than the other tools). just search through your atma folder. don't screw with it though.

1.10 has a lot more extra files than 1.09 though. different references as well.
