Reinstalling Diablo II LOD...

I got a new hard drive and upgraded to windows XP (I had 2000 Pro before). The d2 files are still on my other hard drive. I remember one time I downloaded a registry file from blizzards site I think that lets you effectively 'reinstall 'D2 if you already have the files on your hard drive, but I can't seem to find it now. Anyone know the link? And would it be safe to do since I have XP now instead of 2000 or should I just bite the bullet and reinstall again with the CD's? (I hate it...takes forever, insert this disc, insert that, etc. Blizzard needs to release a single disc version on DVD. /vent)

You could get a CD changer, I guess.

There is no such thing as registry file that will allow you instant playing LOD on XP without regular installing it properly. Especially not from Blizzard, perhaps some illegal stuff from another site.

Also, how can you update your system registry with one “all-around†file (program) when every system is a story for it’s self. During the installment all programs (games) configures all registry entries according to the domestic system environment, how can this file know what’s in your system or what’s your serial number in your game-case.

I do know that LOD can work when you move or copy one copy of installed LOD from the installation folder in a Win 98 to another win 98 system without the regular installment. Just click play.exe

Yeah, but they store the changes they make in order to have an uninstall option.

You con manualy copy the regestry keys/keywords/values(Diablo only) from the old registry to the new one. Maybe you will need to alter some of the values.
A new installation is probably faster.

Btw the cd-key isn't stored in the registry.

Edit: Maybe you will need to copy some missing .dll files from the cd to you systemfolder.

when i got lod the cd key was on a peice of paper.... little like... 1/2 inch by 3 inch little black sheet with a sticker on it! i was so mad. only blizzard could get away with that /rantoff

I didn't download it from an 'illegal' site. I downloaded it from Blizzard site! I remember I found it by accident, from reading a support link on battle.net forums I think. And now I can't find it. What, did I dream this? I know I did this, I didn't just dream it up. Really starting to piss me off because I can't find it anymore. I dunno, maybe I'm confusing with another game I did this with. lol sigh. Edit: It wasn't a program, it was one of those registry import files with the blue chipped block icon or whatever, which is basically a text file that windows knows what to do with it when you double click it or right click --> import.
