"Rare Pleasure" Tournament

CrossCheck has defeated Anadariel to move on to act II NM. She hired a new merc (HF) and is ready to start questing there.

Andy didn't drop anything useful, but a group of dark one shaman champions dropped this:
Grim Shield
Unraveller Head
Defense: 6
Chance to Block: 33%
Durability: 45 of 60
(Necromancer Only)
Required Strength: 18
Required Level: 26
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 44
Fingerprint: 0x4724bd75
+4 to Strength
Adds 2-7 poison damage over 3 seconds
Attacker Takes Damage of 8
+1 to Necromancer Skill Levels
+2 to Summon Resist (Necromancer Only)
Level 2 Life Tap (14/75 Charges)

Without resists, it's not that great, but maybe one of the necros out there would like it for the +1 skills?

The same pack also droppped a circlet with +2 passive and magic skills, but no resists on that either....

At the halfway mark Ursula has now passed into a triple digit score. I used my first gamble, for a great axe with 30% IAS, 88% ED, and 146 lightning damage. Growl!

I almost lost it in Act 3. With the new weapon things were going so easily that I ran right up to the High Council. Whoops! A FE/LE Bremm sent me running back in a big hurry. There was no visible life left in the ball by the time I chugged a full rejuv potion. After that I was a bit more cautious, leaving the dangerous bosses (and undead dolls) to the merc and stuffing potions down his neck.

Meph was simple compared to the council. He dropped a decent rare belt and ring, and a sweet shield for my switch:
Hailstone Aegis
Grim Shield
Defense: 267
Chance to Block: 50%
Durability: 61 of 70
Required Strength: 58
Required Level: 25
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 59

+77% Enhanced Defense
+10% Increased Chance of Blocking
Magic Damage Reduced by 1
Fire Resist +10%
Lightning Resist +29%
Cold Resist +10%
Poison Resist +10%
Attacker Takes Damage of 4
15% Faster Block Rate
Someone in Act 3 also dropped Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest. Argh! I could really have used that! Ormus got it instead...

Halfway there, guys! Go get 'em! :flip:

And watch for a thread in exactly two weeks, with details on the follow-up challenge: "The Melee Blues."

I won't say more now ;)

Freddie has made good progress in act 5 NM. The path to the Ancients´Way is open.

The latest skill points have mainly been used to improve Dim Vision (14 seconds duration now; that´s 7 seconds in Hell) but also some investment in Golem Mastery and 2 points in Corpse Explosion (thanks, Thov!). The idea is to reach most or all of a tight melee pack with the CEs.

Dim Vision has been a most excellent help in act 5 (all those ranged attackers).

I´ve only had two difficult situations in the act so far. One Cursed + CE pack of Frenzytaurs in Halls of Valor forced three retreats and merc resurrections!

This situation was the other difficulty. The other OB Knights behind the wagon kept casting Iron Maiden on my poor merc: he died three times. "Screw that!", I thought. Time for my minions to prove their worth. This boss was as good as fire immune, too (even when LRed, he was immune without). Good thing I had a poison mage.

Freddie´s resists are good now (especially lightning and cold, where I have way more than 75%), but won´t be with the additional 60%-units penalty in Hell. I have just found a +1 skills necro head. I just hope I can boost my resists enough to allow myself to wear it.

I thought my chances of finding a Sol (to craft a spear with) before NM is over was slim, so I tried another craft: a caster belt. Not a single resist; it got sold.

Still no Hel rune. I´m getting a little nervous about that. RalRal in my armor would go a long way towards good resists (without using up socketing rewards).

I have a Hyperion Spear ready for imbuing, but I plan to go all the way in NM (including cows) and look for an ethereal elite before I use my NM imbue.

I found this pretty interesting weapon:

Raven Lance
Scythe

Two-Hand Damage: 29 to 73
Durability: 50 of 65
Required Dexterity: 41
Required Strength: 41
Required Level: 48
Polearm Class - Fast Attack Speed
Item Level: 66
+267% Enhanced Damage
+40 to Attack Rating
Cold Resist +9%
Adds 3-80 lightning damage
Adds 2-12 cold damage over 4 seconds
+7 poison damage over 3 seconds

It does too little damage compared to the ethereal Lance to be of use if I upgrade it once. But as a Thresher, yum...

GG, jiansonz. I knew I wouldn't be in second place for long! (In fact I was originally considering playing a LoM in this tourney, but you beat me to it.)

Do you need the Hel to unsocket your armor? I have one just gathering dust, if you've got something interesting to swap for it.

Please remember that as per the tournament rules, the only items that may be traded are Rares: so no swapping the Hel rune (which would also be a violation of SPF forum trading rules).

Whoops! My mistake. I forgot about the tournament restriction, and I was completely unaware of the SPF rule on runes. (Since I only play SP and usually untwinked, I have never traded before.)

Sorry jiansonz, but it looks as if you're on your own. Not that you seem to need much help, anyway!

I am a happy camper right now. Not only did have one of my most enjoyable playing sessions ever (gameplay-wise), I made two very good finds when I had almost given up that I would do so before I started playing in Hell.

The Ancients battle was interesting. Madawc was Magic Resistant, Talic was Extra Strong and Korlic had Stone Skin (=> unbreakable PI). The fighting situation looked like this: golem tanked Korlic and Madawc was throwing at the golem. Durga was poking Korlic (a useless activity!) while Talic was wreaking havoc among my mages. Not good, since I needed the mages to take down Korlic. Therefore, I pulled back a bit and managed to move away Durga from his position and get him to attck Talic. Talic fell very quickly to Amped Thorns damage and Durga´s poking. When he was gone, all the remaining 7 mages started to fire at (the LRed) Korlic. He went down surprisingly quickly. Then we chased Madawc into a corner and finished him off.

Very intense gameplay in the WSK followed. I got Black Souls on level 2 and Burning Souls on the Throne level. Dim Vision in full force here...

I had to lure back the cold-shooting Death Mages in Baal´s second boss pack. Both chilling and Decrepify was too much for Durga to handle against the Unravelers.

Overall, the hardest of the five packs was actually Ventar´s. Before I found out that I could break their poison immunity with LR, that is. It´s funny to see a poison immune monster that has turned green. :D And yes, their regeneration is still halted at this stage.

Lister´s gang isn´t poison immune either (having 1-2 poison mages really is great), and their mighty blows spelled a quick downfall against Thorns. The harder they hit, the faster they fall...

The same applied to Baal. Although he slaughtered my mages, he never managed to kill the merc. I kept a fire golem in Baal´s face. I went through a large number of golems (and therefore, mana potions) but there was never any danger.

Cows were tough. Especially for the golem, but Durga suffered at least 5 deaths as well. It was considerably harder when he was newly resurrected (before he had activated Thorns). I used more and more Dim Vision (on large packs) and Corpse Explosions. I went through a lot of mages as well. No problem, the corpses were plentiful and the mages made a good job keeping Freddie safe. If merc + golem was busy somewhere else and cows were attacking mages, I cast Dim Vision on them. After that particular mage was dead, the cows would just stand there...

Halfway through, I found a Hel rune. Excellent!

I started in Hell and looked my resists. Scary! I had 1.8 million in gold to gamble away. Like in so many similar situations before, I went Circlet gambling. Freddie´s helm was a Full Helm with nothing useful other than 9% fire resist. I kid you not. That damn helm had been used for 8 1/2 acts!

With about 400k left, I struck gold. No, I struck Platinum! An "OMFG!!" circlet that literally made me shout with joy. +1 Necro skills with Scintillating resist. That alone would have made me happy. There was more. Life, mana, Titanic strength and 'of Defiance'. Unbelievable.

I Hel-ed out the topazes in the armor and put RalRal in it. I socketed my +1 skills necro head with a flawless ruby and the circlet with an Ort. Now it looks like this:

Freddie's Armageddon Visor
Circlet

'Ort'
Defense: 30
Durability: 35 of 35
Required Level: 63
Item Level: 76
+25 to Strength
+37 to Life
+22 to Mana
Fire Resist +13%
Lightning Resist +43%
Cold Resist +13%
Poison Resist +13%
+1 to Necromancer Skill Levels
Poison Length Reduced by 75%

Victor´s circlet is amazing! I want something like that.
I'll bet you do! Your Freddie could use +2 P&B and unlimited teleport. Poor Victor would've preferred +2 to Curses or Summoning. edit: I just read your latest circlet find. very nice! My circlet choice wasn't easy. My other candidate had prismatic resist-all, 20% FCR, +80 mana, +energy, with a little MDR. Ultimately, the teleport charges, and my specific need for cold resists, sealed the deal.

My decision to socket Razan's hyperion spear with an Amn is working out well. His circlet has its own life leech, for a total of 13%. Big damage + Might + Amp + 13% LL = "Life-Tap-Lite" against all fleshy monsters. 3 or 4 hits will take him out of the yellow-zone to full life.

We got right down to business in the Stony Field. Players5 is manageable, thanks to CE. Any mob of 4 or more monsters is going to feel the hurt from CE, big-time. With my high radius, everything drops after the first few explosions. It rocks. The only inconvenience is my low mana. I need to constantly chug potions. On the plus side, there's no shortage on mana pots in the field, so I rarely need to return to town for potions.

There must be something about Act 1 and gem shrines, becasue I found one in each of the next 3 areas. Now I'm back up to 5 PSkulls + 2 flawless. I also found Victor's first elite unique in Tristram, a druid blood spirit. I've never heard the name "Cerebus", but I have heard of Cerberus, Hades' watchdog from Greek mythology. Did Blizzard butcher the name, or am I missing something?

PETA would not approve of my failed tactic in the Black Marsh. I tried to use good ole' Bessie as a wedge during a fight with a very nasty skeleton pack. It didn't work, attacks passed right through her. At least she didn't seem to mind.

The Tower thankfully spared me any stair traps. The only problem was Ghosts. There were two Stone Skin / Immune to Physical bosses. Not even Amp Damage could break the immunity. I used CE to wear them down a bit, but quickly ran out of corpses. I was stubborn about not parking them, and eventually I relied on rapid spawning of Fire Golems. Each new summon caused a sliver of fire damage. I used at least 20 potions' worth of mana for each boss. Without PMH, it wouldn't have been possible. It felt good to finish them off.
The Countess gave me a Thul rune, but her treasure chest never opened! All the smoke swirled around it, then nothing. It wasn't a rerun or anything; I haven't killed any boss more than once. I guess I just got ripped off. No biggie.

Pit Level 2 was trouble from the start. An extra Strong Cursed pack of Fallen gave me fits at the entrance. The merc simply couldn't withstand more than two of them, because of their built in cold attacks. Plus, he was in constant hit recovery. I made 3 entrances with no room to navigate. Finally, I got harrassed and trapped, and had to rely on my Teleport. Zip Zip Zip. Now I'm at the bottom level. With a little more breathing room, I held a line and cleared some space. No problems after that.

Teleport saved me again in the catacombs. I was caught by surprise when a champ pack of Afflicted rushed me from behind, in a tight corridor. Merc and golem were busy bottlenecking a boss pack. I absolutely had no way out. I teleported across a wall into a previously cleared hallway. Phew. Having Teleport definitely has made me more brazen. Overall I'm a bit less conservative, and downright reckless at times. We'll see if it comes back to bite me.

Andariel wasn't much of a threat. CE took a respectable chunk out of her. After a dozen clay golems, Razan had her down to a sliver. She dropped an interesting rare jo staff. Hmm... two strong elemental mods--- it might come in handy so I stashed it.

Continuing Victor's theme of "there's no defense like a good offense", I placed a few more skill points with CE, maxing it. I'm passing on any development of Dim Vision, Confuse, or Attract; especially after reading in jiansonz's post about the duration being penalized in Hell. I have a so-so rare ring with Level 3 Dim Vision, just in case, but I doubt I'll use it. My golem can take a beating.
I jumped right into the Act 2 Sewers. The extended range of CE (level 22) was noticeable. A skelton boss pack + marauders advanced on the golem. After the first few skellie deaths, I started a chain of CE that not only destroyed the remaining melee fighters, it also wiped out a pack of skeleton archers firing from further away. Nice! :yep:
On level 3, I found the popular Vampire Gaze, with great stats too. It sold for about 22,000 gold. I hit level 81, and after getting the Book of Skill, put another point in Amp Damage (5) and Summon Resist (5). All the stats are going to vitality (347).

My confidence took a beating in the Stony Tomb. A bad entrance dumped me in a wide open chamber with 3 doors. A boss pack of beetles and tons of skeletons overwhelmed us. Razan was killed and I had to skip out the door. I re-entered and the same thing happened again. On my third try I risked zipping around the large room with teleport. Big mistake. I drew out additional monsters from a couple hallways, used 3 full rejuvs, and accomplished nothing.
Fourth try, I barely survived my entrance, then teleported blindly down a hallway. I appeared in the middle of a Cursed mage pack. After getting cursed, I teleported into the next room, bumping up against yet another beetle boss pack + skellies. One hit almost killed me, and I teleported again into the furthest corner of the room. The merc was killed, and the golem held off a massive mob long enough for me to TP out.
Fifth try, I run back through the desert and use the entrance. I pop around the room and try a new hallway. Blessed peace! No monsters! The golem blocked the doorway perfectly, Razan jabbed over its back, and I taught that bastard mob a lesson in CE.

Still rattled from the ordeal, I tried out level 2. Disaster! We spawned next to a Holy Freeze mage pack backed up by a beetle champ pack. The speedy beetles mixed with the mages and our groups collided. Razan took the Freeze and was killed in 2 seconds. No curse help could save him. Now I'm scared and pissed off at the same time. Here I go again, wildly teleporting through an unexplored hallway, jammed with monsters, burning rejuvs, praying I don't land on Creeping Feature.
I lucked out again, the hallway I picked led to a room filled with coffins and only a few poison mages. From my new foothold, I finished the level carefully. After raiding the super-chest and mopping up, I called it a night. Never had I seen such difficult monster rolls for that area, and I expect it to be tough. But not that tough. My nerves were shot!

That happened to me in 1.10a (first beta) every time in NM and Hell, but I haven´t seen this bug in the latest patch.

I bet it can! Maxed, with maxed Mastery too. How much life does that bugger have, anyway?

That place clearly has the second highest danger potential in the act (after Fangskin´s lair). Nice little horror story (a Horror story, too!) there.
Wild teleporting is risky, but sometimes still the best you can do.

Never happened to me before, with any version. I don't think I ever did play 1.10a. I went straight to 1.10b (Mac). Weird.

At 20/20 it has 10,600+ life. I can boost golem skills to 23/23 with some garbage rares I found, but I rarely do that, since I often cast golems as "decoys" to scout ahead.

He's very rugged, but not as durable as a 20 valk w/ 20 decoy, since he lacks defense and D/A/E synergy. He also gets +47 resists from lvl 5 Summon Resist, added to whatever he might have already, if any. Poison will still take him down.

Hopefully no one minds me updating the chart at this point, but as jiansonz said, the points were way off because people had been updating my act without the number of points or levels. I just got into Act V, so what's there should be right now, although corrections are welcome as my arithmetic skills are shaky (because of carelessness before anyone starts throwing around insults )

Since I last updated, I moved through the River of Flame and Chaos Sanctuary, albeit very, very slowly. I mostly use bone spear, and as that does about 1200 damage per shot, most monsters take 10 or so spears to kill at p1. Corpse explosion does help, although it's rare a pack will go down to just that - the radius is just too low. Every time a tightly bunched pack of monsters goes down in seconds to a few explosions I'm kicking myself for not investing more in this spell. Also, mana is an issue, as I tend to burn through just about all of my money on mana potions. I don't believe I've gambled an amulet for a couple of acts now, especially with the lack of drops at p1.

But ignoring the complaints, this character looks like he can finish. So far, the only damage he's taken has been from the bone spirits of OKs (they go over bone prisons for whatever reason). Everything else is trapped and goes down bit by bit. Barring any unavoidable magic immunes or more spells that can't be blocked by bone prisons (gloams, unfortunately, come to mind), beating Act V is just going to be a long, slow, and painful process.

Good luck to everyone, it looks like quite a few characters are well into Hell now, where things really get interesting.

quick update: rarnonn rescued the barbs, rescued anya and killed nithilack,

he is now in glacial trail at lev 32. score : 54.

well have more time at around the 15th, after my exam.

CrossCheck has finished Act II NM, and got another load of garbage from Duriel. Actually, I'm pretty impressed at his drop, 5 rares one set (and a TP scroll)... I never get that many items from Duriel. He was remarkably easy to take out too, since the valk could handle him alone.

Crosscheck did find a rare amulet finally, the best mods are +energy, +5% AR, and +80% gold find. (+2 barb masteries wouldn't even be wanted by most barbs)

Also found this charm, which a frost maiden would love, so I muled it off. Low damage, but nice to get two cold affixes for freeze time.

Snowy Small Charm of the Icicle

I decided to start in Hell on /players 3. That seemed like a good compromise when it comes to game toughness and monster drops.

I´ve had it easier than I thought I would. The choice of merc (Thorns) has been one of the best decisions I´ve made with this character. Rarely talked about in 1.10, but definately powerful in the hands of a character with recastable minions. Add Amplify Damage, which doubles the effect (or even more, if the monster has physical resistance).

After some initial fuss, Blood Raven soon suffered the wrath of my entire party. Boys, GET HER!!

(Note my chioce of potions in the belt. It has been obvious for a while now that one column of mana potions is essential for this character. Sometimes Freddie goes completely nuts with his spellcasting! I play necromancers a lot better when I can just throw spells around without hesitation.)

Although this tournaments focuses on rares, I can still enjoy finding set/uniques. In the Mausoleum, I found my first ever TC 87 S/U item (I´ve still never seen anything S/U from TC 78, 81 or 84 in v1.10). As you can see, it was actually dropped by a minion (the magical sword among the potions is the boss drop). It felt like a waste to sell such a remarkable find to Akara. I muled it off. Since I don´t twink, I have no use for it. First person who sends me a PM reqesting it (while providing their e-mail-adress), gets it. ;)
(BTW, I couldn´t stand the thought of Freddie losing out on the 2886 gold which was rightfully his, so I went out onto the Blood Moor, killed a couple of enemies, picked up stuff, sold them to Akara, kept 2886 of the profit and threw away the surplus. My characters have the right to the resources from a one-pass full clear. No more, no less. Yeah, I know I´m weird...)

Boss packs regularly kill Durga if I don´t watch out (and sometimes even when I do!). Worst of them all was Coldcrow´s bratty little sister. The terrain was also very much against me. Soul Crow and her posse had made camp just inside a room, accessible only from two narrow doorways.. I didn´t dare to stick my nose in there (for the fear of getting KOed from a few hits!). I think Durga died 6 times before I managed to lure out most of the minions by approaching from the other direction. Suddenly Soul Crow came out. I cast a golem in her face and kept Decrepifying her. A couple of golems later, she was defeated at last.

Three Ith runes over the course of 20 minutes made it possible for me to cube up to a Ral, then upgrade a very nice Light Belt. I had counted on upgrading this belt when I decided on my 'starting in Hell' gear and made my socketing choices.

Countess gave me El + Nef. Pfft...

Nice find. I'm still excited to see good items too, even if they won't be used for this char. (I still haven't made any twinked chars yet but I still mule items off anyway....)

As for the potions in the belt, looks exactly the same as what I carry! I hate having to use a rejuv, so I always am slurping the blues and red to keep the balls full, and keep spamming those spells!

I have been attempting to gamble a circlet. Nothing good for a zon just yet, but if only I were playing a different char... isn't that always the way? (ATMA readouts cut for length)

Raven Visor
+12 to Energy
+6 to Life
+73% Enhanced Defense
All Resistances +17
+1 to Paladin Skill Levels
Poison Length Reduced by 50%

Imp Veil
+92% Enhanced Defense
Magic Damage Reduced by 2
Lightning Resist +26%
19% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
30% Faster Run/Walk
+2 to Cold Skills (Sorceress Only)

As for progess, CrossCheck has made it as far as the great Marsh WP. Onward to flayer fun.

It was a drizzly indoor kind of day today here, so I spent a lot of time on CrossCheck today. She completed Act III with no really notable events. Meph didn't drop any uniques, but one usable rare, a breastplate with 28% Res Cold, 24% Res Poison, 98% ED and +7 Dex. I was thinking if I add a socket from Larzuk and an Ort from the barb quest, that would be a nice set of resists.

Fighting her way onward she defeated Izual and Hephasto to destroy Meph's soulstone. Interestingly, I had to change the players setting downward at this point in normal as she slowed down, but in NM she is still progressing very strongly, and I have felt no need to lower the settings again. Her hellforge reward was a Lum, P. Top, Fwless Top, Fwless Diamond, and an Amethyst. Lum is such a great rune for the runewords it could make, but not really useful for this tourney, oh well.

Continuing to gamble, she got the following gloves: :winner:
Carrion Hold
Leather Gloves
Defense: 2
Durability: 12 of 12
Required Level: 30
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 63
Fingerprint: 0xfb7d9ae8
Lightning Resist +7%
Cold Resist +17%
Replenish Life +4
12% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
10% Increased Attack Speed
+2 to Bow and Crossbow Skills (Amazon Only)

I'm not going to do much better than that! So that is her first equipped gambled item.

Lastly, she found a +1 shadow skills grand charm from one of the critters near the hellforge. Again, not helpful for now, but still always makes me happy to find a skills charm.

Ok, finally got around to beating act 3. It was pretty boring with me just running around looking for the flayer jungle. I finally got around to killing the norm cow king and on the way I found my first rare jewel. Wohoo!
