"Rare Pleasure" Tournament

rarnonn killed mephisto and diablo! mephisto wasnt that hard, since he never really got out the insane amount of bone prisons i casted.
diablo on the other hand were immune to bone prisons, since he destroys them in a few seconds.
its was a one on one battle with diablo, bone spear against fire and lightning.
my lev 5 bone spear eventually took him down after quite some time.

rarnonn, lev 29 jailkeeper.

Good to see you still in it Mordalles!

CrossCheck has defeated Baal and the cow king and is ready to move onto NM difficulty. Baal dropped 3 uniques and 3 rares.... a really nice drop if Crosscheck had been allowed to use uniques. (One was a stealskull, oh well) Anyway, she did kill him again and got true crap the second time. The cow level gave nothing interesting. She finally went and used her imbue on a circlet and got this:

Spirit Visage
Circlet
Defense: 25
Durability: 35 of 35
Required Level: 31
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 50
Fingerprint: 0xd09cb91
Damage Reduced by 3
All Resistances +18
Attacker Takes Damage of 8
+1 to Barbarian Skill Levels

Resist all! Hooray, +1 Barb skills.... damn. She is using it anyway, because she needs the resists, but man do I ever wish that was Zon skills.

So now, if I got the calculation right... 96 pts for normal difficulty.
less 46 for level = 50 points total.
(I will fix up the table in a new post)

good luck all

I eagerly started Victor on his Act 5 journey. I enjoy NM Act 5 because you get consistent leveling on p8, and more elite items start dropping. The danger began right out the gate, with archers and slingers. Slinger javelins pass right through the merc/golem, so it's imperative for frail builds like Victor to keep alert. Most of the ranged monsters up to the Crystalline Passage had cold attacks. At least ten times I went into "panic mode" when a chilled Victor barely dodged volleys of arrows and javelins. A few series took me down to about a quarter life. Good thing I'm investing heavily into Vitality. The lava river bonus area was a welcome breather.

Drifter Cavern opened into the nasty center island formation, right on top of a Conviction boss pack of Cold Archers. Instant NDE and Full Rejuv. Straying a few feet for position, Victor woke up an Archer Champ Pack. Wonderful. I managed to fire off a couple Terrors before leading my team blindly around the entrance block. Every couple hits while Convicted required a healing potion or rejuv. I couldn't hold any position more than 10 seconds. I did manage to hit most of the archers with a PMH knife, and after a few laps around the entry, I stranded the Conviction boss on the opposite side. That gave me enough hardiness to tolerate a few archer hits while holding a line. Another close call for Victor.

The Halls weren't too difficult until Nihlathak's level. I had another NDE when I got mobbed by those transparent Night Marauders. I didn't see them until it was too late. Victor's defense is pathetic and his chance to block is an embarassing 7%! I squeaked out away from the Marauders as those bugged Tomb Vipers advanced. Even with ultra-safe merc babysitting, the bugged poison clouds killed Razan at least once per wing. He died maybe 8 times.

One good thing about lacking decent MF is that lots of white and grey items fall, which was cool because I sought another ethereal spear before NM ended. I was hoping for a Stygian Pike, but I never saw one. I did get an ethereal hyperion spear, which I stored on the ground due to my bursting stash and inventory. I was keeping lots of gambled rares that I hadn't yet committed to.

Resuming my trip through the Glacial Trail, I finally found my buddy Bonesaw Breaker. I guess I've been playing this game a long time now, because I recognized Cathan's Mesh before it hit the ground!
The Icy Cellar was a repeat of Drifter Cavern. Same center island entrance. The initial stair trap wasn't as treacherous, but the monsters that rushed my gang were much scarier than archers. Razan and Clay advanced to intercept an Extra Strong cold snake pack, as an undead doll champ pack ran at me from the opposite side of the map. One of the snake's cold missiles chilled me as I ran across a bridge to a side island. Lucky for me there were no extra monsters there. I cast a new golem just in time to intercept the doll pack. Phew! A very sloppy fight followed, with lots of decrep and Life Tap, but I held on.

The battle with the Ancients was pretty intense. Their attacks were unpredictable. None of them "stuck" to a particular member of the gang; we were all occasional targets. Sometimes all three mobbed the merc, prompting me to tug his leash and pass him potions. His life went down to the red a few times. I was negligent in not bringing enough potions, so I mostly used Life Tap. I left the setting at p8, which took forever. Very long and very tense until the first Ancient death. After that, no problem.
Against Baal, the golem alone provided enough slowing to minimize special attacks. I switched from Decrap to Amp, but it still took forever. He dropped 5 rares, nothing good though.

I loaded up on gold with p8 cows. Lots of items sold for max gold. The King dropped a sweet rare studded leather. Had I not screwed myself earlier with the accidental armor socketing, this would've been my endgame armor. I may still use it for myself if I reach Act 5 Hell and get another socket reward. For now, it goes on the merc.

First thing I did when I started Hell Difficulty was check my resists. Horrible!
That's why I'd saved all the possible gambles. Time to make some tough decisions. First, I gambled away all my gold, but didn't get anything useful. Then I had Charsi imbue the ethereal hyperion spear. Hey! That ain't too bad, thanks Charsi!

111% Enhanced Damage
+54 AR
8% Mana Steal
Lightning Resist +7%
Repairs durability
Ethereal

With the Might Aura, Razan now deals 709-1943 pure physical damage, and that's not counting Victor's Amp Damage! Awesome...

I used 6 of my 8 PSkulls to reroll a rare jewel. Garbage... although it did go up from level 25 to level 36.
Next, I used my Hell craft to make a Caster Ring. More garbage...
I spent the next hour trying combinations of gear, and decided I needed to use my Hellforge UM rune (and a PSapphire) in my two-socket gargoyle head. My reasons:

1. I had no elligible diamonds, rubies, or topaz. Not even flawless ones.
2. IMO Victor's life, defense, and blocking are too low too attempt Hell w/o big resists.
3. I'm an underdog to find a Fal rune for upgrading a possible elite merc weapon.
4. The aforementioned imbue is good enough to be merc's end-game weapon.
5. Without CBF, good cold resistance is much more important because of the danger of multiple hits while slowed. The shield already had 27 cold resist. The PSapphire and Um raised it to 89%!

Victor's Hell stats: Str 73, Dex 55, Vit 327 (847 life), Energy 51.
Chance to hit: mid-10's to mid-20's. Good thing I have ITD on the knives.
Chance to block: 7% --- hilarious!
Resists: Fire 75, Cold 65, Lightning 75, Poison -19
MF: 39%-50%
Slots still free for gambling: gloves, belt, both rings, one weapon, both shields, merc weapon. I really hope to improve on my gloves/rings.

I started Hell at p5, p8 for underground areas. It's working, thanks to merc's big damage + lvl 19 Corpse Explosion. The teleport charges on my circlet are awesome for managing merc/golem positions. The circlet also has +2 P&B skills but the only good that does for Victor is CE boost. Funniest sight in Hell so far: Blood Raven's bow had monster flee. I guess to her, Razan and golem are "monsters".

Victor's weapons/shields, his armor/jewelry, and the merc's gear.

Victor Shen, level 77, Act 1 Hell, Stony Field

Nice progress for Victor, there.

(If I get to Hell, I will probably play on /p1 the whole way)

I fear that day. I have saved a resist ring and a necro head (it lacks skills so it could just as well have been a normal shield) with 19% fire resist and 2 sockets.

Freddie has defeated Mephisto. Decrepify + Clay Golem proved to be good against him as well. Diablo will probably be another matter...

Not much excitement to report. The toughest fight I had was in Travincal where a huge pack of Zealots (like, 5-6 spawn packs´worth of them!) killed off all my mages while Freddie was busy trying to be left in peace. Eventually, I just used Dim Vision on all of them. I Terrored away a couple of their Heirophant masters and Dimmed the rest. Merc and golem could slowly give me corpses to rebuild my army.

I have decided to invest heavily in Dim Vision. The duration is cut to 1/4 in Hell, so I need to have it at a high level for it to be useful. A huge radius isn´t bad either. That leaves less points for Bone Prison, Golem Mastery and Corpse Explosion, but that´s the way it goes.

A very good find in one of the countless "containers" in Lower Kurast: an Amn rune. That meant it was time to upgrade the +94% ED rare ethereal Pike. It works very well for now. I hope for an ethereal elite spear/polearm to drop before NM is over (so I can use the NM imbue on it). Holding off this imbue to at least character level 74 will mean that there will be a potential for Cruel on it.

Indeed it was. Oops...

I fought on like this for quite a while. The slowed Diablo breathed on the merc, but he actually survived that (barely!). A quick Life Tap, then back to Decrepify. Then both merc and golem were slain by a Firestorm, and Diablo immediately threw a Firestorm at Freddie. I should have cast a TP before to see if I had been able to get out that way. No time for that now (Freddie was using his old 32% fire resist Kite Shield, but had no more than ~45% fire resistance at this time). Quick weapon switch and use a Teleport charge to get away from the flames. 11 charges left now.

Back to the old Fire Golem + Iron Maiden style. It worked perfectly, and there was no more jailing either.

It´s finds like this that can make it annoying that we have to use only rares...

Hellforge gave me:
Flawless Amethyst (next to useless - sold)
Perfect Topaz (nice, either for MF or resist in shield)
Flawless Ruby (nice, either fire resist in shield, or +life)
Sapphire
Fal rune (next to useless by itself, give me an Um to go with it!)

I gambled this circlet for Durga:
Glyph Circlet

+12 to Maximum Stamina

Wow, I'm going to have to speed up if I'm going to catch the leaders here!

CrossCheck is doing fairly well right now. Valk is at slvl 14, (shooting for 17 by mid act II, and eventually 20) and she is basically unstoppable at this point. What an unbelievable tank. Works well with Immolation arrow, as she holds monsters in place and they burn....

I had lowered the players setting to 5 at the end of normal, and am continuing with that without difficulty. So far in NM Crosscheck has collected the first 4 quests and 6 WP, stopping at the inner cloister. Countess dropped crud, but I may run her again in hopes of getting an Amn to upgrade CrossCheck's bow. Also she found this mask:
Cruel Cowl
Mask
Defense: 45
Durability: 16 of 20
Required Strength: 23
Required Level: 18
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 42
Fingerprint: 0x79f0fc9e
+6 to Energy
+61% Enhanced Defense
Cold Resist +20%
10% Faster Hit Recovery
Socketed (2: 0 used)

With the two sockets I could add an Ort and Ral from the Barb quest for some decent resists, but I'm not sure if it's worth it compared to what she is using now (+18 res all circlet).

Also gambled this circlet, I'll probably equip it onto the merc when he reaches a high enough level:

Bitter Casque
Coronet
Defense: 75
Durability: 30 of 30
Required Level: 48
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 52
Fingerprint: 0xe43596a3
+36 to Life
+83% Enhanced Defense
Fire Resist +15%
Lightning Resist +35%
Cold Resist +15%
Poison Resist +15%
Level 1 Confuse (22/22 Charges)

So far the only gambled slot used is the merc weapon, and that will change as soon as I get a NM act II merc.

Lastly, and amazingly, CrossCheck has still not found even one rare amulet so far!!
I'll have to gamble for one I guess , but I'd really like to wait till the best affixs are available...

Nice. You get style points for commanding your troops while bone-prisoned.
BTW it is possible to escape Diablo's bone prison with a portal. I tried it once and it worked. Maybe I got lucky. It's possible the portal may not always work, like when you're surrounded by monsters and the TP spawns out of reach.

 That sucks. I full-cleared (on players8) all the way through Act 3 NM before Meph dropped my first rare amulet. Did you use your craft already? You can use your NM craft on an amulet, to save your gamble for later. I tried that, but was unlucky with the result. Still better than nothing though.

Wow, NM meph for first Ammy... I've still got a while to get there anyway.
I haven't used my craft but I'm waiting to get to lvl 71 to get max affixes and I will craft a set of blood gloves. Only place I can think of to get a bit of crushing blow. May not help much but hopefully a bit.

I tried some gambling now anyway, I checked the ilvls for ammys and there isn't much I couldn't on a rare anyway. Spent all my gold, have to wait a while. Should be able to get the +2 bow skills on gloves now too, so I'll be gambling those. (maybe I won't need the craft if I get lucky here)

For that, you only need to be level 68 if you buy the gloves (they will have item level 73 by then). That gets the output ilvl to 70.

EDIT: If ilvl 70 is enough to guarantee four random affixes. If it´s 71, then you need to be character level 69.

I was trying to save a Teleport charge. :D I wanted to fight on so I could give the four closest mages a chance to bail me out. They almost made it (they had one BP segment down to 15%). If I had helped out with occasional Bone Spears from the start, we may have been able to destroy it before I had to escape.

Victor´s circlet is amazing! I want something like that.

My mind knows this (I think crazy bear told me) but I didn´t think of it in the heat of battle. I knew I had the means to escape anyway...

It has been a while since my last update, so I thought I should comment on how things are going. Since the start of the summer, playtime has decreased drastically, and killing has slowed down so much that getting from one waypoint to the next takes a long time, making play sessions less frequent. I made a huge mistake by not maxing corpse explosion, bone spear/spirit are taking forever to kill enemies at this point, even with a huge point investment in synergies and playing at p1.

On the other hand, this character's safety has not changed at all. The mercenary dies so much I can't afford to keep him alive, but that's not an issue. A level 1 clay golem provides some distraction, and a level 20 bone prison lasts until the timer expires no matter the enemy. I usually have to spam that until nothing can move a step, and then slowly kill everything off with bone spells. This works, but with super mana potions costing 1000 gold, I don't know how sustainable this will be - I'm already running low. Perhaps a return trip somewhere easy for gold is going to be needed.

As of writing this, I have just got to the City of the Damned WP. Upon killing Diablo, I'll give a points update. Good luck to everyone still competing, it looks like it'll be mostly necromancers, and necromancers with smarter builds at that (read: with a high level corpse explosion available). I'll try to gain as few levels as possible finishing this off, and hope for the best. Then again, as fast as I'm playing now, I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't even finish first. Only time will tell.

Sarah killed Baal on normal difficulty. She didn't kill Cow King yet.
This is the best find:
Spirit Cowl
Circlet
Defense: 49
Durability: 16 of 35
Required Level: 27
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 34
Fingerprint: 0x95b39548
+49 to Life
+53 to Mana
+59% Enhanced Defense
+50 poison damage over 5 seconds
14% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
+1 to Assassin Skill Levels

I was pleased with +mana mod, that made my life much easier (I don't drink mana potion every 5 seconds, but every 15 sec :))
Baal almost killed me, when I didn't pay attention and underestimate him.

I have updated some guys that posted their score since last table update.

Wow, this surprises me. I played an untwinked bonemancer and found it was one of the fastest killers of the chars I have played. Maybe the equipment is slowing you down? How much +skills have you managed? (I was using a 'white' wand which by itself was a sweet boost to bone spear)

For that, you only need to be level 68 if you buy the gloves (they will have item level 73 by then). That gets the output ilvl to 70.

EDIT: If ilvl 70 is enough to guarantee four random affixes. If it´s 71, then you need to be character level 69.

one of these days I'm going to have to figure out the whole ilvl/alvl/qlvl/mlvl/qlvl thing......

Example: to get cruel, the ilvl (or is that alvl?) is 51. but to gamble it you need to be a much higher level than that... and I have no idea how to figure out what level you actually have to be....

That depends on the qlvl of the weapon type you gamble. A rare Short Sword can get Cruel at ilvl 56. A Long Sword needs to be ilvl 66, a Battle Sword needs to be ilvl 76.

(Note: the Cruel that can spawn on rares is another affix with a higher alvl: 56)

A good rule of thumb for Cruel on rare elites: either ilvl or qlvl needs to be at least 78 (which is why it´s good to imbue at clvl 74 => the imbued weapon gets ilvl 74+4=78).

This is also why the high-end elite weapon types can always get Cruel, no matter the ilvl when:
* they are for sale in shops
* they get rerolled with chipped/flawless regual gems (qlvl 75 is enough here, because Cruel on magical items is alvl 51)
* they get rerolled with skulls (rares)
* they get crafted (axes, spears, javelins, blunt weapons, even caster Caduceuses!)

I think it's a total of +2, just from the wand. The necro head has none to any of my poison/bone skills, and neither the ammy nor circlet have any +skills. White, obviously, is not an option. That's probably the biggest problem. Other than that, killing isn't that bad, but without CE, it's usually one or two monsters at a time that can get hit at once.
