Quick Question - Static Orb

Is a staticorbtress worth making?

20 Static
20 Frozen Orb
20 Cold mastery
Maybe the rest into Telekenesis and Energy Shield?

Looking to play untwinked hardcore.

I've not seen a guide so I'm asking those that may have tried to make one and what degree of success they had.

Playing this way will get you through normal, NM...but not Hell. You really do not need a heavy investment in Static even if playing untwinked. It is possible to find orbs with +skills on them, even armors, shields, amulets and circlets. This will be more than adequate to boost the range of Static Field. If you were playing v1.08 you would absolutely rule...but alas, you are playing v1.10.
 
Putting more than 1 in static is a waste I think...

:D my lightning sorc put 1 in static, now lvl 26, effects monsters out of screen! :thumbsup:

I don't think its a total waste... though, I still wouldn't do it. This build will not kill CI monsters in hell, or NM for that matter... It may bring them down close, but killing is outa the picture. I think your CL idea is a better one, and more common at that... boo! Haha.
 
I agree.

In hell, you can only take monsters health downt o 50% , unless you will rely on a merc to tank for you, and you just want to help him out.

Better off having just a couple of points there, so you can zap bosses down fast, then to use your main attack to cause damage.

Frozen Orb dosent excite me that much, I dont really think its that good, it doesnt have the same 'omph' as a fully synergized Blizzard, Chain Lightning or Meteor.

Duel builds are always a bit slower at killing than a pure single tree sorc.

I reckon go single tree, and get a friend to go another single tree sorc, thats always a lot of fun, especially with 2 decent mercs to help out

For chain lightning to be viable you really need to sink at least 70 skill points into it.

Its expensive.

that would only leave about 30 for orb, and maybe 10 points for a mix of teleport, frozen armor, warmth and static field.
 
Thanks for the advice. I'm at level 31 with my Orb, 1 pint in warmth. Energy Shield at 1 and I've stuck a point in Nova and Thunderstorm (could be wasted points).

I've not decided where I want to take this character now. I've got about 12 skill points spare at the mo and not done Izzy in normal. I plan to pump up Orb and CM every level to max them out.

I want to try something different once orb and CM are maxed. Is Hydra worth a punt? I know I may have wasted two points but some wise words from the rest of you on an Orb/other build would be useful. I'm not too fussed about Hell killing as I generally play for fun rather than obtaining itaaammzzzzz plzzz gib!

Hydrorb is pretty tight with the skill points. Why not go a CL/FO build? That way you haven't wasted points as much. Reduce CM to about 8 or so and let +skill from items/charms do the rest there. Max CL, LM, and Lightning. If there's anything left, put the rest into Charged Bolt, Nova, TK (if you ever plan on using the ES) or CM.
 
Sasja brings up a good point in his meteorb guide. Bringing cold mastery above level 17 will only affect 35% of the monsters in the game. Better to invest just enough in CM so that +skills bring it to 17. That way you can pump up your support skill further.
 
i opted for orb+nova

tho it's for a normal/nm rushing sorc - haven't really tried her on Hell as my Hdin tele rushes Hell perfectly well.
