Question regarding the viability of twohander wielding tesladins

Greetings Paladin brethren,

I am planning to play a Holy shocking zealot in single player who uses a twohanded weapon, and I had a few questions for those who have experience with paladins, especially in Hell difficulty.

First, let's have a look at the build I have in mind:

Skills:
20 Zeal
20 Sacrifice (synergy)
20 Holy shock
20 Resist lightning
1 or more points in Fanaticism to help with lightning immunes
The rest goes to 1 point wonders, and Salvation for more synergy to Holy shock.

Now, I was wondering, how hell viable would this build be with a twohanded weapon? And how much trouble will I be having regarding survival, especially compared to a shield using variant? And how much damage output does one gain when using a twohander with this build?

Now you may be asking, why go through all this trouble of using a twohander? Simply put, because paladins wielding twohanders look awesome, and I do not wish to hide behind a shield :punk:. That, and he is inspired by a character of mine from the warhammer 40k d20 rpg, a sort of battle priest who used a Thunder hammer, a large hammer which crackles with lethal energy.

Thanks in advance, and may the Light protect you, and the powers of Heaven shine upon your path!

2H Paladins have always been viable.

As for how much damage you'll be doing: it really depends on a lot of factors. Weapon, the rest of your gear, etc.

I also love the way 2-handers look. Best of luck with the build. ;)

Re: Question regarding the viability of twohander wielding tesladins

I don't mean to rain on your parade Penthar, but I don't think a 2hander tesladin is the best idea. Going without block means getting hit much more often, and the tesladin build isn't really suited to 2h weapons since most of their damage comes from the aura, you won't benefit much from the added damage of a 2h weapon as much as you could if you used other skills (Vengeance or Charge come to mind, since they rely heavily on weapon damage to be effective).

Does that mean your build idea isn't viable? Of course not, I've seen builds with more drawbacks than this one complete Hell and I'm certain yours could do it too. But compared to a 1h tesladin you won't be either as resilient (because of the lack of block and lower defense, your resistances will suffer without a shield too) or deal as much damage (because 2h weapons are typically slower), it's up to you to decide whether you can live with that or not :)

Thanks for the reactions guys, it's been helpful :).

And you're not raining on my parade at all, Ragnarod, you've told me exactly what I needed to know :).

Re: Question regarding the viability of twohander wielding tesladins

You need little better items than pala with shield, but he survives and kills fast with good items.

Its hell viable (viable in full games too) its safe too.

I used something like these while playing two-hand pala.
Reaper's Toll, Threachery and Guillaume for might-merc. Same items for pala. Obedience at switch to trigger enchant and to kill bosses. Both merc and pala can use obedience late nmare/early hell until you are level 75 to use Reapers.

Decrepify from Reapers makes 2-hander very safe, melee monsters can't kill you, you need just good resist for ranged elemental damage. Archers with amp cursing boss are your worst enemies.

Re: Question regarding the viability of twohander wielding tesladins

I thought about doing this myself wearing infinity on myself and having a HF merc with Reapers toll for crowd control. Trouble is that there´s no IAS on infy so it´ll be a slow killer :/

Re: Question regarding the viability of twohander wielding tesladins

Looking at the numbers you actually only need 60 IAS to hit 3.57 APS on a giant thresher :)
