Question about blocking... hel rune and eld rune...

Would one save more points by hel'ing a SS or by eld'ing it ( i believe that is the increase block one).

Say by level 85 ish.

What if you were wearing Guardian Angel?

A Hel will save you 23 points.

The value of the Eld will depend on the class of char that is using it.
A Paladin, clvl 85, with a plain SS needs 181 Dex for max block.
A Paladin, clvl 85, with an Elded SS needs 167 Dex for max block, only saving 14.
A Sorceress, clvl 85, with a plain SS needs 206 Dex for max block.
A Sorceress, clvl 85, with an Elded SS needs 188 Dex for max block, saving 18.
The difference is that sorcs get worse block naturally, so a flat 7% is a bigger proportional improvement.
Likewise, a Pally using Holy Shield will get even less benefit from an Eld. Similarly, increasing blocking with GA or a Safety amulet etc will also reduce the benefit from an Eld.

Hel wins, in every situation I can think of.
Even the most extreme case, a level 99 sorc with no other bonuses to blocking, the Eld only saves 21 (237 compared to 216).

Let me get this straight: You can get a better block rating, using less dexterity, by socketing a hel rune rather than an eld rune. Is this right? I don't understand this whole blocking formula at all.

It's a matter of using less strength for Stormshield and then turning those saved strength points (from the HEL) into dexterity with any additional going to vitality. This assumes that SS is the heaviest item being worn, probably by a wide margin.

All right, I can see this line of reasoning, but will your absolute maximum block potential not be better with an eld? Does eld only reduce the dexterity required to attain maximum block rate, and not increase the maximum block rate attainable?

Assuming you're speaking of raising maximum blocking potential, like Guardian Angel/Darkglow raise maximum resistance potential, no. It only gives you 7% additional chance to block as the 'of Blocking/Deflection' suffixes do. To the best of my knowledge, nothing raises the maximum blocking limit, which is set at 75%, however, it is possible to attain significantly higher blocking through excess dexterity (be it charms, other gear or whathaveyou) and runes to negate the penalty received for running. Depends on what build you're making and your style of play.

the running penalty is applied after the 75% cap. so running has a 25% effective cap, and there is no work around for this.

exactly.. by adding 7% more into ur blocking the dex u need to hit 75% is lowered...

as thrugg said even at the worst case scenario the hel rune can save more str, then the eld rune saves in dex.
