The Paladin is the second-to-last class in a 2H Melee Sept, and I decided to go the Abbott route based on SSoG's guide. The main prompt was rolling this Skiller with one of my early 99ers as the only 45 of Vita Skiller from the 100s of rerolls that I've done, plus two of Sustenace ones I've picked up since then:

Of course, as you'll see in the readouts, I forgot to equip it when he hit level 83 :rolleyes: But I did a few Pindle runs with him after he Pat'ed to use it! Beyond that, Insight fit the Sept theme nicely and does solid damage and allows pretty quick Zeal or Vengeance attack rates with a Faith Rogue. Conviction solves for AR issues (where he would have challenges otherwise due to needing charms to bring up resists without the shield) and allows for more powerful Vengeance as PI solution.

And the Abbott (pumping iPDR) is a build I'd wanted to try. But I was always a little leery of the over-defensive / underpowered possibility, based on SSoG's description of playstyle and gear recommendations, given how I usually approach melee characters. The Sept was a nice nudge, and I'm glad I tried it out!

First off, I geared a little more offensively than SSoG's recommendations, including some crushing blow gloves rather than eeking out 4 iPDR from that slot, and using extra small charm slots for elemental damage to make Zeal stronger (and prismatic damage). I also deprioritized +defensive skills, which was necessary due to needing GCs to cover resists and the -iPDR options I had for head and amulet, but that yielded more +skills to Combat skills or +Paladin skills, further boosting the offense. I also went with Zeal as the primary because it's uninterruptible. And Insight's damage, with the elemental boost, at 11/6/6/6/6 with level 14 Fanaticism from the Rogue's Faith, with 11-frame Vengeance as a PI solution, seemed like it would be quite solid. It was!

With shopped 3os armor of Amicae, a 2os Circlet of Amicae, and amulet of life everlasting, he ended up with 88 iPDR, right between minimum and recommended levels in SSoG's guide. There were plenty of monsters in Hell that couldn't do any damage to him (which was fun!), but also plenty that could. In the latter category, however, most did limited damage that regen handled if facing only a few and a healing potion even when working through a pack was more than sufficient. Then there were the heavy hitters, mostly Blunderbores, the FI Blood Lords, and Siege Beasts, but also Boss packs of other types depending on mods. He used his share of full purples for those encounters. It's definitely not a play-without-thinking build: he coasts through, methodically working his way through enemies and not really needing to worry about safety, until he encounters that rare monster that can do serious damage. And for the few monster types where normal rolls were able to punch through his iPDR, those areas required careful tactics.

For that reason I really enjoyed the playthrough, having to choose between Zeal and Vengeance (usually the former, but Vengeance was great for Hags with their high PI), swapping to Cleansing to remove curses after fights, and occasionally switching aura to Sanctuary to keep undead from swarming. The latter was especially important during the Anya rescue, with Ghosts and Shambling Horde and amp witches a challenging roll for him if he hadn't been able to keep the mana burn ghosts at bay and pierce their PI with the low-mana-cost Zeal.

He was p3 all the way through Hell (except Ancients at p1), with full clears of all A85 areas per my usual, and all quests completed except Nihl, which I will complete after regearing him to Griswold's set with 100+ iPDR set up. He made it through without a death. I'm actually not sure whether SSoG's accounted for p-setting, but p8 would have been rough with extra monster damage. I think p3 was a good balance of higher monster damage while still being managable and not boring.

His updates are here (to A5 NM and shopped armor), here (through A2 H), here (A3 & A4) and here (A5). He picked up an Ist in Ancient's Way, but otherwise no drops of note. HF was Shael and Lem.

As noted, I will respec to allow full Griswold set (likely with Might merc), clear Nihl, and maybe do a Baal run or two to get a feel. But then he will go to retirement, to allow focus to turn to the Sorc in this set and my Orange You Glad tourney Paladin that I've started up and moved to Outer Cloister.
