Re: Patch 1.12 released

For the sake of informing the public, the 1.12 patch is on the homepage, its just that the link is still labeled as 1.11b. I updated and this way and it is indeed 1.12 (I started the game without a disk and got on the battlenet without upgrading.)

Re: Patch 1.12 released

First post ever. (registered ages ago, learned about the trade system, atma, runeword mods etc, the intricate system people have for trading. (pgems as currency, the concept of taint, etc (liked the whole concept, looks like someone has looked at the secret service security clearance systems (where classified information is only allowed to travel up (details I forgot)))).

I'm really surprised that blizzard even released a patch. While I have been using the images for ages now. I think it is great that they still do this. 8 years after the last expansion of the game was released. If blizzard is still so committed to diablo 2 after that many years, I think we can still hope for a later patch that removes a substantial amount of bugs (since this version only removed 1). My guess is that the 12a (instead of 12) supports this. It could be that they already are working on a version 12b but that it just was not ready yet.

I won't be updating at the moment (no use, system works, not trading, not mp'ing, and there may be some stability issues). But I still think it is great that blizzard does this. Perhaps it is a good idea to test the different mods that are out there in and see if they still work in 12, and put this in a sticky. I guess that information is what most people are looking for.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

We look at trade/MP. The SPF has always been very strict about cross-taint (vanilla/modded) and versions (never move things backwards).

It would have been so much easier if Blizzard called this 1.11c. But they didn't. So we are in this position.

Thyiad, can you please explain what would be different if this patch was called 1.11c instead of 1.12a? Are you saying it would be allowed to use 1.11c items in 1.11b games and 1.11b items in 1.11c games? My guess is no, but then I don't see what would be easier about it being 1.11c, so please explain.

I'd also like clarification from anyone that nothing will be messed up except I need to update that .dll file, if I upgrade. Version switcher will function like normal, desktop shortcuts will still work, Atma works, RWM/RRM works, etc etc. Thanks.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

I need to stop posting around midnight the a/b/c thing was .. I have no idea but I think it would be easier to to decide to upgrade if it was a bugfixes to 1.11c.

1.12 doesn't do ANYTHING for SP. Nothing. 500Mb on the HD? Come on anyone where got less than a 120 Gb drive?

I really don't see why everyone is making a such a huge and unnecessary song and dance about this. Particularly those who DON'T trade or MP.

We've had new patches before. We've never allowed things going backwards in versions and we aren't going to start now. So decide what you want to play and do so. Versions are separate and they don't go backwards. Irrespective of how Blizzard implimented the patch.

I'm getting really tired of saying that.

You know I asked for help on the FAQ and got nothing before. I'm asking again now for input. How about some constructive help on something for the Community rather than nitpicking over this.

Way offtopic: Don't really know which faq, but I found a small error in this one: http://www.purediablo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=472493

It contains the text:

"The item will retain its Ethereal status if it was Ethereal before. However, ethereal armour will lose its bonus defence when it's upgraded! This is a bug which will be fixed in 1.11, if it's ever released."

While it should really list if it is fixed. (I believe that it was (it is according to: http://www.purediablo.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4341054&postcount=574)) Hope that this helps at least a little bit.

My neurons are on summer vacation, so I have some difficulty grasping things lately. What exactly do you want input on? I have plenty of time at hand (ie. having an exam on Friday ), and might try my best for constructive help.

ps. in case it sounded so, I'm not drunk... not yet! :hammerhead:

Re: Patch 1.12 released

Agreed. I just don't like being given false hopes. If they say "this is the final patch for diablo 2, cya in the next game!" I won't complain at all, I can and have coped with the little shortfalls such as the unholy keyboard-wall-breaking annoyance of the FE bug while on a hardcore melee char.

It's just that... keeping hoping for that little fix is annoying :/

This no-cd patch shouldn't be seen as a hope that Diablo 2 is due for any future content/bug fix patches, in my opinion. Blizzard is in the process of creating a service where we can register and re-download all of their games without having to dig out our cds, and this no-cd patch is a part of that process; nothing more, nothing less. To be setting up this service for all of these old (but great!) Blizzard games is like a nice, big "thank you" from Bliz, even if it probably is just the first step of some kind of Blizzard-esque Steam service.

The uproar and angst over this surprises me, frankly. D2 has been out for eight years - the fact that they supported it with substantial content and bug fixing patches for what, five years? (through 1.11), is astounding and something that 99% of other non-MMO games never see.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see one more content and bug-fixing patch, but given that it's been 3-4 years since 1.11, I am surprised that anyone doesn't consider that to be the final content/bug patch.

I agree with your sentiments to a certain extent, however my uproar and angst comes from understanding exactly how easy it is to fix just a handful of the bugs. We're talking the equivalent of opening a file up in excel, modifying one or two values then repacking.

Yeah, I know, testing etc etc etc. But it wouldn't be major changes, just fixing dumbass dev typos.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

Developers are dumbass lazy gits who can't be bothered to bugfix and/or test.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

1.12a, eh?
Maybe there is hope for 1.12b?

I have no reason to update to 1.12 yet, but I'll see how the situation with trade/MP will evolve...

Good thing you forgot- otherwise, I'd have to kill you. ;)

From what I've read here, there are no changes to gameplay mechanics. The only changes have been to the program binaries in order to accommodate the no-CD functionality. Of course, this certainly doesn't preclude the possibility of introducing bugs, but we can hope it was a simple matter of removing/commenting out the copy-protection code and recompiling the source. Still, Bliz does have a knack for f&*%ing up the simple things, so waiting while the guinea pigs (read: cattle.net crowd) test it out is certainly a sound approach.

As has been pointed out, even trivial fixes such as documented errors in the tables have not been fixed, so my guess is that this was a deliberate decision on the part of Bliz to not make any content changes at this point. This could be a good or bad sign, depending on how you look at it. On the one hand, it might mean they are deferring new content until a future patch (thus, there's hope), but on the other hand, it could mean they're adamantly refusing to update content, period.

<raises hand> I'm on a laptop, though, so at least I have an excuse. Gotta upgrade the drive in it soon, but unfortunately, it's PATA, so I'll only be able to go up to 160G. I haven't seen any non-SATA notebook drives larger than that, and with PATA being phased out, I doubt I will.

Agreed. I don't trade, but do MP, and as such, I don't want to upgrade until such time as a majority of people in the RWM/RRM trade pool do so. As pointed out, this is only likely to happen in two cases. First is for people who play on b.net at all, and second is for people like me, who may update to be at 'version parity' with the first group for MP and/or trade purposes.

As for me, I've downloaded but not installed the new patch. Currently, it's sitting in my D2Backup.zip file that's duplicated on several drives. I just like keeping a backup of any patches I feel I might use now or at some future date.

@Thy: Here's a suggestion. Sticky lionheartthebrave's poll thread where people can state their intent to update or not. This way, those users who are still on the fence with regards to this decision can use that information to help them decide.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

The patch, the patch... For me it's irrelevant if some mods work or not because im vanilla player. However, after serious thinking i came to conclusion just to install daemon tools and make image with imgburn of my LOD cd. I was thinking that some time ago but being very very lazy about doing anything practical at home I just never did it. Now i see that many of you has already done it ages ago without any problems so why not test it. Actually it worked quite nicely! I have quite decent laptop in my hands but when there is no hassling with cd-drive those loadtimes are even faster. So blizzard gave me good idea even they didn't fix that much. But they showed that they keep good things going if there are enough fans out there and diablo2 really has. Even if they didnt' do anything ever for diablo2 im quite happy for their support so far :)

Re: Patch 1.12 released

Couldn't you already play without CD's? I mean, the start-up and cinematics require CD's to be in the drive, but other than that the general gameplay doesn't. I usually only insert my CD to start up the game and then take it out... Helps conserve on CD's.

I suppose it doesn't really concern me since I won't be using it anyway, since I pretty much retired from d2 for the time being. The only possible "repercussion" is how this will affect trading, if/when I ever decide to start playing again..

Re: Patch 1.12 released

Well, Starcraft-Broodwar patches basically do nothing since 1.08 (currently 1.15), except for growing in size ten-fold over the years, of course. You'll get used to it. *hides*

Re: Patch 1.12 released

What a pointless patch.

Why couldn't they at least fix the bugs in the game (like Inferono and Artic blast 1/3 damage etc)??? Who gives a toss if you can play with a cd or not.

Bloody Blizzard and thier WoW.

Because, if they fixed inferno and artic blast, I would be playing tomorrow. It was to much to hope for.

tee hee - it's not every day that you see a moderator trolling :-)

Seriously though, most developers that I know would prefer to spend more time getting it right, but are prevented from doing so by those damned bean counters who only look at the numbers after their currency symbol and for whom 'professional pride' truly is an unknown concept.

Re: Patch 1.12 released

I myself was playing on Bnet for the reset and thought, "Hey, at least this patch has moved cain in act 5 to right next to the stash, it's not all bad." Then I was told that this has always been the case on the Realms, and not on SP. :badteeth:
