OT: The SPF Mafia Game appreciation thread

Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying the Mafia games.

I was convinced that skoolbus was cosa nostra right up until the point I saw his little head sticking out from under that bus. I knew jrlafrance was a wrong'un, though.
The theories and intrigue make my head spin, but the games are a hoot. Well done everyone so far.

(Anyway, sorry for the spam, I didn't want to interfere with the thread itself.)

Hahaha, the mafia is taking over the SPF just like it takes over towns. I actually didn't get why I was run over by a school bus, then like five minutes late it hits me hard, like a bus.

Pfft, I'm positive I know who two of the other mafia are, but am gonna wait until it's over to see if my guess for the last one is right. I also was thinking of some cool new roles.

edit: I don't see why everyone thought I was mafia in round two, I didn't say things that scream 'I'm a mafia' cough jrla cough

I won't say anything about the game running (although I want to... badly...) but yeah it's a nice game and I didn't think it'd be well playable trough the forums, but it works. Dunno about new roles, I know a few too, but bombarding the game over and over again maybe isn't the best idea. I think we should leave the registration open a bit longer for next game (if we're going to have one) since more people might want to join.

I'd enjoy it more if I actually played it.

Note to the host(s): If you decide to conduct the game again, maybe new people should be given a chance to play? I enjoyed following the first round, but I was just a little too late in signing up for the second, and registration was already full...with many that played in the first round.

I don't want to sound like I'm criticizing...I simply imagine that there's others like me out there.

dont want to post anything of relevance since im detained but I'm hoping I can get back to internet before the next day ends.

And yeah its a lot of fun.

After already being suspected, I felt that I had to use the witness card in the game. I can't say it's a role I enjoyed though and one I'd prefer to take out of the next game. For the rest I was quite surprised at Skoolbus' apparent innocence, him ignoring quite a few comments on what he wrote made him quite suspicious. From that point of view it was quite a good tactical move from the maffia to kill him, to confuse people even further.
Anyway, I wrote a letter to the newspaper, which unfortunately did not get posted due to ****ed up timing. Skunkbelly gave me one hour, and when I read that message I thought it had just arrived, it turned out it had arrive nearly an hour ago already, and by the time I finished writing my message to Skunkbelly half an hour later (and I did not prepare a letter in advance before Skunkbelly gave me the names of victim and perpetrator in order not to tempt fate into having me murdered that same night), he had already posted another article. Now I could of course keep it for another witness, but it's a function that I don't want to have in the game, and I don't think I'd play the card next time. By the way, Jrlafrance's comment on not playing it due to wanting to play did not make me very suspicious of him, since I also thought about it like that. Anyway, here is the letter I wrote which I don't want to have written for nothing. Since it doesn't say a word about what has happened since, nor points fingers to people still in the game, I feel it's safe to post it here, and I really need to get rid of the feeling of having written something for nothing.

Letter to the editor

Dear sirs and madams,

I hearby feel the need to share something weighing very heavy upon my heart. As you are no doubt aware, indeed it was the first thing on the front page this evening, we were shocked yesterday to find Instaaled having been murdered. Not able to sleep this night, I went out and saw a similar thing happening. I watched in horror as I saw a swarm of unspeakable evil insectoids cover the house of Sint Nikolaas. I heard a scream from inside being cut off and knew Sint was no more.

As the swarm dissipated shortly after and I vomited from nausea caused by the sheer evil presence, I saw Jrlafrance rub out a circle made with what clearly looked like blood. Apparently he heard me throwing up since he looked at me. As he looked me straight into the eyes - and I suspected to find looking at me a far more evil presence than what I had felt - I saw him looking as always slightly sleepy, not a hint of the evil he had brought upon us, he came to me and smiling told me: `Ah, how unfortunate, Lister, I'm afraid you will have an accident soon.'

Then he walked away, and I saw him motioning to some figures covered from head to toe in some very dark green clothes, so dark that I'd mistaken them for shadows earlier on. Knowing that my life is forfeit I write this in the hope it reaches you in good health. May you act upon this information and destroy the perpetrators. Unfortunately I cannot tell you anything about those dark clad people - if they're people and not more summoned evil - although then I would have felt their presence I suppose.

I can only guess their identity, from suspicious behaviour yesterday, however, since I'm not sure, and I don't want to accuse some innocent of this horrible crime, I won't mention them here. Besides, there were too many people acting suspiciously where I saw only two or three shadowy figures. Strain your memories, and try to remember who said what and from that you'll hopefully be able to unmask the guilty parties. May, by means of this writing, my death not have been in vain, and not only mine, but also and especially Sint's and Instaaled's be avenged by means of the information contained herein.
May Instaaled and Sint Nikolaas rest in peace.

Thus I leave you, hopefully still to see the light of day, but doubtful whether it may be so,

Regards to all,

Sir Lister of Smeg

Oh, and I do enjoy these games, and have some ideas for a larger scale, yet fast running version.

As for playing the witness.

Yeah I didn't like the roles much either if I'd got it. Having to sacrifice yourself out of the game isn't that much fun, even though you take one of the bad guys with you. If the townies win because of the move (even early on) then it's great ofcourse, but you're still looking from the sidelines.
I would do it differently. The witness stays as a role, however not actively. The witness is just a townie like all the others. When the mafia kills the witness however he will be able to write one of their names with his own blood on the floor or something. That way there is a total random spin to the game where the mafia will have to do some carefull planning in case they accidentally do stumble while doing the witness in.
That way it won't be a 2-for-1 special where there has to be a townie murder (1st town), a mafia sighting (1 mafia) and a townie accident (2nd town). But it would just be an even shot.
Just to make it a bit even though, the witness wouldn't be able to be revived by the docter because of the bloodloss, so the townsfolk won't be able to take out a mobster without losing one of their own.

I mean the random effect of the game right now lies in the guessing of the cop and the docter. Why not add a counter element. I know it would blow ofcourse if the mob target the witness the first night, but they'll have the same chance to take out say the cop right?

Hm.. now that I think of it.. maybe some additions like the witness can never reveal himself. Or the witness doesn't even know he's the witness (random generated at the start of the game, only known to the host).

One role I was thinking of was a mad scientist/necromancer sort of thing where you can revive a dead player for one night or something along those lines.

I really like these two ideas... I think it'd make the role more fun.

I also like the necromancer idea.

And if we do this again, it'd be great to have 20-30 people involved, with maybe 7 or 8 "special roles" instead of just 4.

If I can actually manage to catch the signup for the next round, I'd like to give it a shot.

Yeah, signup for the second one lasted like 4 hours, I think that for the next one signup should be like 3 days, and we let however many people signup play, then you're going to need a mafia townie ratio of like 1/6-7.

I played mafia IRL and honestly I didn't think it would work on a forum, but I was pleasently surprised. Just one thought: at the moment it seems that the only way the townies can win is by blind luck (like lynching Schmaelop in the first game). It's completely different when played live when you see all the people playing, observe their reactions, changes in behaviour etc. but on a forum it's too easy to hide yourself when you're mafia and just let the townsfolk kill off themselves. One possible solution I see is to raise the required post number each day to something like 5. This way you have a lot more information to base your decisions upon. Just food for thought i guess. GG to skoolbus for the idea:thumbsup:

Sint, I really like that modification of the witness. It makes it tricky for the mafia, but also the witness needs to play very carefully to avoid lynching.

inSTAALed, I also had a similar idea for a necromancer role for the townies. Basic rule would be that they could bring back any lynched player, but their would be a required day of rest. And they can only do this once per game.

The day of rest is required because of the mafia's counter role, the Graverobber. Basically the graverobber can remove any corpse from the reach of the necromancer begining on the night that they are lynched. If a necromancer attempts to ressurect an empty grave, he is unsuccessful and may try again the following night. Again graverobbing can be done once per game.

Another role I had thought about was a townie called the Eavesdropper. How this would work would be that each night the moderator would at any random time contact a randomly selected mafia member and request the most recently received email from that mafia. This email would be sent unedited (except to remove previously quoted messages) to the Eavesdropper townie.

Two other roles I was thinking of were basically identical counterparts for the mafia and townies. They are the Mafia Spy and the Private Detective. Each night they have a 50% chance of receiving whatever information the Cop has elected to receive. The success role being made for each separately by the moderator.

One other modification to the game structure I'd like to see would be a 36 hour long day. It's been pretty tough to have a back in forth with the Ausies.

One role i would like to see is an undercover cop in the mafia who cannot reveal his role to any one inc the cop. dont know specifics but i prefer this to the necro/graverobber roles.

Okay, I've been ''reasearching'' a bit (also thanks to the link in the last mafia game) and I've come up with a few more roles that would work on this forum. I mean that we won't have a 50+ player environment and probably not enough to have multiple mafia families roam the lands.

Protective roles.

Guardian Angel, can stop someone from being being murdered at night. A sort of a doctor, however the Guardian Angel will pick the person who he/she is defending at the start of the game and will continue to do so even if he/she dies. The Guardian Angel can only save that person once.

Bodyguard, will be able to protect someone at night from being killed. The main problem ofcourse is being killed yourself. The bodyguard will die instead of the targeted person, not giving a special message. (so if the mafia try to kill person A, but the body guard is defending person A then everyone will get a message saying the bodyguard died as if the mafia targeted him, so his role will not be reveiled.)

Reviver, can revive a dead person to its fullest role. Can only revive a set number of times in a game.

Killing roles.

Vigilante, each night, the Vigilante may kill another player (this varies) (by sending their name to the Moderator). The Vigilante is on the Town's side. The number of vigilante kills may be restricted.

Serial Killer, The Serial Killer (often abbreviated as SK), like the Vigilante, may kill another player each Night (by sending their name to the Moderator). However, the Serial Killer is not on the Town's side or the Mafia's side. The Serial Killer wins when everyone else is dead.

Bomb, if this person dies, he's taking someone with him. If he gets killed he either takes down a random person of the mafia (when killed by the mob), the shooter (if he's killed by a lone person) or the last villager to cast the lynching vote against him.

Terrorist, can choose any time of the day during the game to blow himself and a picked person up. He will not detonate when being killed. He cannot detonate himself if he already has enough votes to lynch him.

Paranoid gunowner, will kill anyone (once, or a set number of times) who targets him at night.

Investigating roles.

Spy, can spy on a person during the night seeing whatever that person is doing. Cannot reveil himself OR share the information he received. Like a detective only handicapped.

Investigator, can investigate killed people's houses to find out their professions.

Undercover Cop, it's a villager who has infiltrated the mafia. Various possibillities are available. He can switch sides or leak information or sacrifice himself. Depending on the game, number of people etc. his role is modified.

Role manipulators.

Prostitute, can sleep with someone at night finding out their role. If she sleeps with a mafia member she dies. Can choose not to sleep with someone.

Switcher, switches two people's roles (during daytime) for a day and a night. The people can't reveil any information they received in their old job.

Bus Driver, can switch two people at night. Meaning if the mafia calls at person A's house at night, but the bus driver switched person A and B that night, person B dies instead of A.

Thief, can steal someone's ability. If the thief targets a mafia member he dies.

Other roles.

Mason, the Masons are a group on the Town's side who know each other and can talk to each other at Night.

Priest, cannot cast a vote against someone if it will be the last vote to lynch someone.

Village Idiot, he has to try to get himself lynched. Will share the win of the game if he succeeds.

Beloved princess, a regular townie. However if the princess dies, the next day phase will be skipped because everyone is at her funeral. It won't matter in whatever way she died.

Mafia spy, a villager who sides with the mafia. He knows who the mafia are, but the mafia doesn't know who he is. He wins if the mafia wins.

Vampire, a villager. If killed by the mafia, he will turn into a mafia. If the mafia does turn the vampire the host will give a message along the lines ''noone died last night'' instead of the mafia killing message.

Day cop, same as a normal cop, however will work during the day time instead of night.

Paranoid cop, doesn't know he's paranoid. Will get a mafia message every time he investigates someone.

Naive cop, doesn't know he's naive. Will get a villager message every time he investigates someone.

Survivor, villager. Will win if he's the last standing.

Cult/Hypnothyst, villager. Sort of. Will start out on his own. He will try to recruit a cult around him. Will win if there are only cult members left. If he dies the people he reqruited will become normal again. Being in a cult does not affect your role. If the Hypnothyst tries to recruit a mafia member he dies.

Lovers, linking two people in the game. If one of them dies, so does the other. Instantly. They know their counterparts, but don't know the others role.

In combination with or without: The Loveconnection, this is a role. The connector chooses at the start of the game (before night 1) who will be the two lovers. He will know who they are (and can reveil it if he wants), but the lovers won't know who set them up.

Siblings, linking two people in the game. Both people know they are siblings and know the others profesion. They win if they end up together. If one of them dies a diary is found reveiling the roles of both siblings (dead and alive).

-----------

Right. Those are quite a few. I don't think some of them would work or would be smart to implement so early. Like the number of cops.. wouldn't be smart without a bigger number of mafia, which wouldn't work with only a few people. The roles I like or think would be fun to try out:

Bodyguard.
Bomb.
Paranoid gunowner.
Investigator.
Prostitute.
Busdriver.
Masons.
Village idiot.
Princess.
Survivor.
Lovers + Loveconnection.
Siblings.

I especially like the busdriver (to add confusion to pretty much everyone), the gun owner (would be amusing to kill the cop or something), the masons (for an extra edge), the idiot (I mean.. come on, who wouldn't want to be that) and the lovers + connection.

Anyway. There's more to this little game then expected huh?

Yeah I just did some wikipediaing and came up with a similar list Sint.

I think my favorite role was the Village Idiot. He's not really a townie or a mafioso as his goal is simply to get lynched but not murdered. Could make for a lot of second guessing when looking at suspicious behavior.

One format I had seen was where everyone signing up provided a special role they would like to see in game. The host then randomly assigns the roles that are given at sign-up. I guess this could be fun, but may lead to play balancing issues.
