OT: The Daily Thread

It’s not HP and I avoid it. *walks off grumbling*
There may be A HP in it from what I gather. Harry's grandad, Henry (Harry) Potter.

Based on the very few comments, I think I'll wait until it is available for streaming.
Maybe it's time to boot up good old dii again - been a very very long time.

Funnily enough I still follow everything here, even when not playing. This place is difficult to leave - so many great memories, helpful and friendly members and tons of great experiences. I know I'm a bit of a strange fruit with some strong opinions that differ from the norm here, but I still feel much more at home here than anywhere else on the internet, I can think of. Keep playing guys, and I'll keep following - and please never close this site.

That might not quite cut it :P

Strange fruit... Sounds perfect for the SPF? :P

RL: I've been quite inconsistent last week, as I'm actually against stuff like Black Friday sales (too much of this commercial stuff forcing shops to cut down on their prices too often), but nevertheless took full advantage of it this time . The urge to get the gear I need for the Zugspitz 80K next year was too big I guess.

So I bought a Garmin Fenix 5 watch. I was still very happy with my current watch, a Polar M400, but the batterly only lasted for 9 hours, even only 5 now due to circumstances. The Fenix 5 should last 24 hours in regular gps mode, plenty of time for the Zugspitz, which we should be able to complete in 15 - 16 hours. I also bought an Inov-8 Stormshell waterproof jacket, and some calve sleeves.

Weather forecast for the sea trail this weekend is windy and rainy. Perfect conditions to test the Stormshell jacket. The Garmin watch, I'll probably keep as a present for myself for Christmas, and only start using it afterwards.

D2: the untwinked HC Hammerdin has gained another level, and is now in LK once again in search for that last Sur / Ber. I also started another entry in the untwinked 99er challenge, a SC WW Barb. He's currently in Act 1 NM.

OVG: are you kiddin'?

RL: As much as I like to spend money locally, I still do most of my holiday shopping online. I flat out refuse to shop at Walmart for anything, and they are all over the place in the US. Sometimes I forget how worldly this forum is. There is the one time trip to each of my local malls I make this time of the year to people watch. The overcommercialization of the holidays definitely kills the mood for me. It just seems so much different from when I was younger, but I am getting old.

There was a fatality in the company I work for, in the same dept and position that I have, on Friday. I do track maintenance on the railroad. I’m sure we will get some info tomorrow, but the company always skirts the issue because most of the time there are legal actions when somebody gets killed while on the job. The truth gets spread through the workers over time though. The culture of safety has eroded over the last couple years after the regime change in management. My heart goes out to the wife and three kids the guy had though. I always worried about my Dad when I was younger, and I have the same job now. It’s a good job with good pay, but like I’ve always said, there is a reason we get paid what we do. There is a chance you may not make it home. This is something the Cheeto Silver Spoon baby that’s president right now will never have a clue about.

@Kitteh I hope you can figure something out to get yourself feeling better. It takes a tremendous amount of self control to keep in a decent place, and when things out of your control mess that up it sucks. You would think the powers that be would place more emphasis on mental health, but it still seems lacking, here in the US and apparently all over the world. Every time there is a mass shooting here the subject comes up as usually mental health plays a major role, but then it goes away, until the next one, and so on.

D2: Still grinding it out with my 99’er Sorc. I have my Barb geared out fairly well now, but even with the 1.07 Ethereal CB’s on Death and BotD, he doesn’t seem to be ripping through stuff like I thought he would. My last Frenzy Barb was using Grief/Lawbringer so he was swinging much faster and seemed to mow down everything. The power of Grief is for real. The current Frenzy Barb is still a blast to play. A few other characters have been getting some action so I can spread the wealth from my 99’er. I am hoping over the holidays I can push closer to 98 with the Sorc though.

OVG: If there were more time in the day I would be playing Grim Dawn. Wolcen looks pretty good in Beta, and definitely something I would like to try out. If Blizz is working on D4, they better have their best thinking caps on to put out something competitive.

This is a sad story. Even if you didn't know him, stuff like that can have a major impact in my experience.
Thanks for sharing.

RL: the sea trail was a lot of fun. Just like I figured it would be: a lot of wind, no rain (so no testing my new rain jacket, but I don't mind that much; )), quite tough due to nature of the trail. Didn't have an overly good day, so suffered more than I thought I would, but I think that was also because we were running a bit faster than I would have had on my own, because one of my buddies just had a very good day, and as such couldn't help but pushing us somewhat.

Next thing to do for us is schedule when we'll be training for the altitude gain in the Zugspitz Supertrail, which is something we can't do where we live. So we'll want to train specifically for that at least once every month next year, with one ultra race of some 50 - 60K in March or April to somewhat simulate the Zugspitz. Exciting times !!

D2: my 99er Barb completed NM. My 99er Paladin finally broke the spell and found a Pul in LK after 550 runs without anything above Lum. Sur will drop soon now ;).

OVG: nope. I expect us to be playing a lot of board games soon though, when the kids don't have exams anymore and we get to have far more time together.

The kids are getting the 5-6 players expansion of the Catan base game and of the Cities & Knights expansion. That one definitely is our favourite game for now. Other than that Carcasonne, with all the expansions we have, and Camel Up. And Risk at times.

We'll definitely get more board games over time, but for now we already have so many we decided not to buy any new ones for Christmas. Before that I had my eye on Legends of Andor. Castles of Burgundy seems nice too.

RL: Things are really not good just now, I can't focus at all. Even reading (work or otherwise) and D2 aren't enough, I can do 10 minutes at a time and then I just stare at the wall and think for 30 minutes. The psychology services phoned me on Thursday and we had a discussion and I agreed to go back to see them, but obviously I will be on a list, albeit shuffled up a bit. I have to spend Christmas with my parents and Nan, so they are picking me up tomorrow morning. I really just want to be left alone, but I at least get back on the 27th and have the time to myself until I'm allowed back in the lab on 3/1/19. The only work I can do is reading, maybe some R stuff and prepare for a journal club. **** it is my general feeling these days.

D2: Just hit 650 Mausoleum runs with Habacalva, a few nice finds (one deeds'd :p) and a couple of levels so far. The aim is 5k as I did in AT with Kitteh. Like I said though, I can't focus on it just now. When D2 isn't a solution, **** is real

OVG: I'm feeling increasingly angry/irritable and after arguing quite strongly with my kettle because it was empty and slamming a door so hard that half of my figurines in the next room fell over, I figured that I should relieve some of that aggression... Thus, I got Black Ops 1 in the steam sale - it was a toss up between that and MW2. Hopefully, just killing lots of people will make me feel better  Also, I'm taking Cards Against Humanity to my Nan's for Christmas...

Any change in their attitude towards being able to see the same professional consistently? I just read the last pages of the thread. I'm blown away about how naive someone would have to be to think such a solution could work.

@darkstarhub
Terribly sad to hear about your colleague, I hope you all at least will find out what happened. It must be hard to work in an environment where safety issues are not unknown, but ignored or downplayed, if I understood your description of it correctly.

RL: Currently waiting for a ******* headache, or maybe eyeache, to disappear. I usually get such things when holidays are coming up which is pretty useless prioritizing from my body. In part it's due to not being able to work out properly the last week. Office job (lawyer for a municipality) and commuter trains leaves my neck and back feeling like wood. Otherwise finished a long writing project about another game that has spanned two years on and off which was nice. I actually borrowed some flames from D2 for the finishing picture, long live the fire animations of this game.

D2: Tried to play a bit on a slow and steady evil spearazon but just got irritated of /p8 unravelers in nightmare yesterday. Killed Duriel at least so I can leave the rest until later. Gained a few levels on a normal set bear today but then got too tired from said holiday-crashing-ache.

OVG: Currently modding and playing a Warhammer mod for Medieval II Total War. Really fun but so much work to do too.

Well, I didn't particularly want to reengage at all, but they (and particularly my supervisor who arranged an appointment on my behalf a couple of weeks ago) are very keen. So I said that it was doing more harm than good and it basically wasn't going to work unless I could see the person I initially met with. So, she agreed to try and match me up, but I don't know if it will happen to be honest.

How do you find time for everything? :P

Respect to your supervisor for taking the time to engage him/herself in arranging the appointment. I hope theys tick to their word (and basic healthcare principles...).

I don't :)... I mean, look at the rate I finish characters in D2...although that might have some connection to a heap of weird themes and imposed equipment limitations too... I tend to get a new idea or the urge to continue on something old every second week or so, so I usually don't get too far at the time. This doesn't matter much when it comes to gameplay or modding but it's bad for writing things because with all the long periods of inactivity peoples interest die out and you lose the crowd so to say.

Otherwise, the main answer is late nights. I have trouble sleeping if I don't do something creative or cultural to relax, whether it's modding or read a book. I keep thinking of only bad things that hang over me and tend to sleep badly in such cases. So with mini-Maltatai running across the place all evening it tends to get quite late.

On one hand yes, but on the other, he knew that I had disengaged and why but chose arrange something without my knowledge, which is disrespectful even if for the right reasons. It's a difficult one.

You have a mini human? Well no bloody wonder you don't have time!

!!! What the... I think I retract my previous statement, even though I agree it is a difficult choice.

Yes, mini-Maltatai has inherited my late evening habits so time is certainly scarce...

RL: first day back at work after almost two weeks of holiday :(. Can't really get into it yet, so since I still have some spare extra hours at work, I'm going to take the afternoon off to finally play some D2 again (but more on that later).

We had wonderful holidays. A lot of the usual suspects: eating, drinking and presents. But also quite some quality time with just the wife and the kids. We played an awful lot of Catan: Cities & Knights. We absolutely love that one. Even the youngest one, who is only 8 but already knows how to play it very well.

I took it easy when it comes to running for about a week, because I had some minor pain at the bottom of my left foot. Still managed to do a bit over 1900K last year, so it was definitely a good year in terms of quantity when it comes to running. In terms of quality even more so, as I felt very strong and energetic throughout the year. I also have the feeling I got to know my body a lot better, even after all these years, up to a point where I'm really confident about my 2019 goal: the Zugspitz Supertrail XL 80K mountain trail.

D2: almost none. Christmas holidays is always busy as it is, but it also means family time to me, so the times we didn't have to go somewhere, I mostly prefered to spend with the wife and the kids. I did level my two untwinked 99ers a bit, and started a Venomancer to have another Cow runner when there's another RFL (my previous Venomancer killed the Cow King), but all in all I've only spent a few hours in those 2 weeks.

OVG: nope.

RL: Dentist this morning and I had to get a filling, he insisted that it was going to be enough to require anaesthetic, so I'm currently very hungry and very thirsty. I also decided to work from home today since I can't do any lab work anyway. Just a journal club and literature review to get done, maybe a stats module.

D2: If I listen to the football tonight then I will do some Mephisto runs, but most likely nothing...

OVG: Eh, reading? I have an itch to play Pokemon (mostly because I'm reading the manga) but I only have Sun with me in Glasgow for some reason, and I don't like Sun and Moon. I'm tempted to ask my Mum to hunt out and mail me Fire Red. What I really want, is one of these remastered Gold/Silver titles, they were possibly the best generation. Same for Ruby etc.
