OT: Life satisfaction

Hey everyone,
Ive been looking around and thinking alot lately about what I want to do in life , what I want to acomplish , and what I want to have and or get out of my life. I have been reading and studying lately on human interactions and the way humans think and reason. I thought I would make this thread for just a few responses to see how most people view there life and how they want to see their outcome.

So first,
What is it that you want most in your life. By this I mean it could be a possesion , a status (read: job position or something along those lines) , maybe a sum of money? Also it could be a mindset. For the past year I have been severely depressed and have also been in a crisis control program for a attempted suicide. Im on perscription medicine for this. Also they have me on a anxiety pill. So I constantly finding myself wishing not so much for a new car or a million bucks but to not be mad at the world becuase other people can be happy and I need a little pink pill to be happy.

Now second,
What have you been doing to achieve this state of mind , new item , or new title or rank. I would appreciate it if I didn't read any responses such as I want most in life a uber zod rune drop and ive been running countess for it.

Therefor,
I guess I will give my responses.

A. Ive always always always have wanted to be sucessful enough to have my own library in my house. This is just the best thing I think. I could not imagine walking up my stairs and opening a door to my own private library with say, a nice desk in the middle of the room to be by myself to read or work or even just think. Also I wish I didn't have to rely on pills to be happy, but thats a whole different story. :sad2: Too bad they dont work how they say they do.
B. Also boston. Boston boston boston. I would give anything to live my life in boston. I hope and prey that once I finish college and get my degree that I can move out of new york and into boston.

Lastly,
A. As for getting the library I guess first I would have to be
sucessful
to get that far in life and to be that happy! So I am trying to find a major in a computer based course. Im not sure what all is out there and what all I have the talent to do. So far all ive seen is programming and graphic design. I would like to find something that makes me happy and I can go some place with it. So if I can do that then I can work on my dream-library.
B. As for working on living in boston I havn't done a single thing yet. There is nothing I can do. I still have a few years in college so there is no point for me to start looking for a job or house yet. I dont even know what to do for my major in college so I will just keep taking things step by step.

Im really eager(sp?) to hear (or read) everyones responses. Im sorry if anyone is offended or anything by my talk of depression and happiness but it kind of just builds up and I have to tell some one that im not happy or who knows I could pop!:fortuneteller:

So first,

I'd imagine the think that I want most in my life is to be happy as well. The subset of that that I'm referring to mostly comes family and friends. Possessions and job happiness are both important facets of my life, but in the end it's not what you own, or what you're striving towards, it's who you share you life with. After just having finished my first of two three month periods in Spain, I realize now that the friends I made there are infinitely more enduring than any possession (yes ladies, even diamonds  ). I'm most happy when I'm with my girlfriend, my family and my friends. Maintaining the bonds that I've formed with these people is the most important thing in my life.

Now second,
What have you been doing to achieve this state of mind , new item , or new title or rank.

As far as working to achieve this, I've taken measures to step out of the virtual worlds I've become so comfortable in and into the real world where my actions matter. That's one of the reasons I've been decreasing my time in the SPF. I noticed that when I posted 30-40 times in the EMB during my bartending days that I was getting out less and less. This environment was so comfortable that I was slowly losing touch with the outside world. I count many of the people here among my friends, but at the same time, I was actually losing little bits of the actual physical human interaction of spending time with my friends. Because of this I made a great effort in Spain to reach out to new people that I normally wouldn't spend time with. And it paid off, I made new friends from all around the world.

The thing I want most of all is to be with the girl I love, and our kids. The most substantial effort I made was spending a year, on and off, as a friend of hers until we realized what was really going on.

That's it, nothing more nothing less. I am afraid it sounds pretty trivial, but entering a lasting relationship is the best thing I've done. And statistically, it is one of the healthiest (sp?) things you can do.

So far it seems as if people need more of a connection to get what they want. Im sort of the opposite. I hate people. They over and over end up hurting me. Friends , family , girls. Now I didn't give up on girls yet but I now sort of distance myself from friends and family to try and get myself some place in the material world. Knowledge is power and I cant get enough of it fast enough. Sucess over failure and the persuit of happiness keeps me striving. Even if you dont have anything in your life (mwa) then it helps to have something to reach out for.

On a side note, does any one know any websites that have e-books for free? Also has any one read the book neverwhere?

Keep the posts flowing and dont be shy.

I know I sound like your pet hate shrink, but I think we are getting fast to the root of your problems. My guess is that until you are able to connect to people, the problem will persist.

I guess you already receive therapy. If not, it is worth far more than anti-depressant medicine.

Actually I dont see anyone. I only take the whites and blues. As for my age im 43,455 days old. I really dont like talking to any one who would try to help me I dont mind talking to some one who will see what I deal with and just be considerate. Connecting to people is easy and ive always been able to pick up the girl I have a crush on or the friends I want to hang out with its just that I am jelous. Im mad becuase mostly every one I come in contact with is happy and dont ever have thoughts cross there mind that can make them think twice about the daily routine of their life. I cant even take pills to get this feeling. ..

Back on topic,
I also forgot to mention that I want people to post comments including guidance and experience maybe. I didn't mean for this to brake off into "please help me I hate every one and every thing feel sorry for me" thread. I just wanted to see what every one else wished they had..

EDIT: Im still snooping for free online books to read!:brainiac:

Well. An interesting topic, to be sure. Where shall I begin...

At the beginning, I suppose.

To me, what I want out of life is a little deeper than material possessions, but that has an involvement too. I'd like to be able to make a lot of money, have a six-figure income, etc., but first and foremost I want to spend my life doing something that I enjoy. I'm going to college now for computer science and technology in the hopes of becoming a game designer/getting a spot on a design team. I can't imagine making $150,000, but hating to drag myself out of bed in the morning and go to work.

The other hope I have is to be recognized. Note, I said "recognized," not "famous." I'll give a little backstory as to my hope here. Growing up, I've lived in essentially what is a "nowhere" community. A place where most everyone has no aspirations for anything, and the place in itself is virtually unfindable. I went the opposite way. I've become so sick of being in the area I am, and not being recognized for anything that I've accomplished by anyone other than myself, that I want to know what it's like to feel that sense of pride.

Now, as for what I'm doing to work towards that goal...quite simple. I'm getting my education. I intend to go all the way to a doctorate in computer science, and a bachelor's or master's degree in technology. I enjoy learning about computers, technology, and electronic devices far more than anyone else I know, and I intend to put every bit of what I can learn to good use in the future.

Im glad your chasing it down nightfire. Computer science seems like a perfect place to start. I want to get a job in the corporate world doing something along the lines of programming or networking. Maybe ill look into it a bit more since programming so far really hasn't reached out for me.

Minus one hundred

Well, I actually I'm about 119 so I'll chime in with some jumbled insights and tell some of what i've told my kids and others seeking advice.

1. It all starts with deciding what you want. Then you figure out what you have to do to get it. From there on out its just execution. Failure cannot be an option. There can be no excuses for failure. it doesn't matter that your too short, too fat, too black, too poor or anything else. Anything that goes wrong is your fault for letting it happen. And anything that goes right is because you made it happen that way.

2. Find something you do well and max it out. Don't just dabble in it. For example, going to work in corp America as a computer programmer/developer whatever is not going to get you a library filled with great works in nice house in a great neighborhood. For one thing computer work as a rule doesn't pay and number 2 unless your willing to wait a long time and advance corp America isn't going to pay you well either..Good pay by the way is 150K or more. Any less and you will have to make hard choices especially once you have a family. Instead, if you like programming find a way to make a business out of it. Very few people who "work" for a living are happy.

As a side note. Your comment: "Knowledge is power and I cant get enough of it fast enough." made me chuckle. I call that sort of thing 'dinner table logic"....ideas that get thrown around willy nilly that are actually false but common known truths... Knowledge is NOT power. If it were there wouldn't be so many smart people work for dumbasses like me:wave: It's the application of knowledge thats important. Doing something productive with your knowledge. Otherwise it's just trival informaton.

What is it that you want most in your life.
Realistically speaking (ie. if we don't count childish dreams and insubstantial wishes caused by spontaneous excitation), nothing for myself. I just don't like to see other people's suffering or unhappiness. So I would say, a happy and long life for everyone that I'm aware of, as little work but as little suffering as possible and a painless death.

What have you been doing to achieve this state of mind , new item , or new title or rank.
I've been doing absolutely nothing to achieve anything. I don't even eat some days because it's so much of a hassle!

Umm... link

I don't know where you came up with your conclusion chillnkill, but perhaps knowledge might do you some good. But hey, you live your life however you want .

What are you talking about?...Unless I'm misreading that page those are 40-80K jobs. That will not cut it in this world I'm afraid without much sacrifice. As I said, anything less than 150K your not living the dream by any strecth. And 150 only does it if you save and spend wisely.

edit: wait..I reread tthe chart..Those are not even salaries, those are just projected job openings..Now I really don't get your point. Hey, the demand for Wendy's fry cooks is huge to, so what?

Btw, as for my knowledge, I employ ~12 programmers so I have a fair idea what they earn. How many do you employ?

That is the only one I could find to peppe. Thanks for the link anyways!
As for chillnkill I think I will have to agree with kombat wombat. Everyday I read articles on cnn and read yahoo tech news and almost every amazing find or breakthrough deals with a computer. Almost every job now is computer based. How can you sit there and say
For one thing computer work as a rule doesn't pay
The richest man in the world was from a computer and unless you can defend criminals , find a cure for cancer , or some other high end miracles I think you highest chance to live a decent life (money wise) is computer work. Programming might not be the highest paying of computer though.

As for what you said with knowledge is power being wrong, I can understand where your coming from. I have to disagree though , when I first started a search for programming books and programs I ran across a post by some one here at this forum who said that this man won a job over so many other people becuase he knew how to do one extra programming language then the rest. He had a little more knowledge in the field. That extra knowledge gave him the advantage needed to "bag" that job. I understand this is only one case but I cant sit here and cite for hours to prove a point. Yes applying your skills is very crucial and without being able to put your ideas or knowledge down on paper your not going to go anywhere. Before you can apply it though you must know it , correct?

Wow, knowledge would really do you some good. That's some advice from a seventeen year old.

I see you have trouble interpreting my post. You stated that, "computer jobs as a rule doesn't pay". Assuming computer jobs to be specifically computer scientists, your statement infers that a salary ranging from 40-80k "doesn't pay" is laughable.

What's more laughable is your comparison of the demand of Wendy's fry cooks compared to that of computer scientists. If you understood the most basic of macro economic models, you would know that when demand is high and supply is low, the equilibrium price (being salary paid to a worker) is higher than it would be if supply met demand. Seeing how computer scientists are paid in the range of 40-80k now, we can conlcude these figures will increase steadily in the future.

Oh btw, I don't know if there actually is a demand for Wendy's fry cooks (I'd rather not assert incorrect knowledge) but if there ever was, there would be more than enough supply (in the US) to meet it.

Also, assuming that what you pay your supposed programmers is the same for all programmer is simply stupid. Does it make sense that what programmers are paid varies according to what their company does? Now that would make some sense. Also consider that "programming" is only a fraction of what computer scientists do. There's a bunch of kids in the US that know how to program remarkably well. Do all your "programmers" have degrees in CS? Note that CS is different from software engineering.

As a final note, it doesn't matter how much money you make. You can still be as ignorant and stupid as the guy who works at Wendy's. Now isn't that mind boggling?
