OT: Help with Divine Divinity

I got this game in a bargain bin since I had heard good things about it. I looked around for some good DD Forums or help sites, but could not find anything that was helpful and some are even openly hostile to noobies.

The game did not come with a manual, but I have found some of the basics online. However, I wanted to get good answers to some general questions, and I know some from the SPF have played it and will be generous with their wisdom.

1) Anyone know of any good helpful DD forums out there?

2) Basically, it looks like any of the 3 classes can learn the skills from the other classes. Is there any consideration as to which class I start out as?

3) Are skills and stat points sparse, so I should be careful in how I place them?

4) Any skills that are critical to have?

I don't want any spoilers or walkthroughs, as I like discovering things for myself, but I don't want to invest 5 hours or so in my character then discover I botched his development.

Thanks!

Been quite a while since I played it, so my memory is pretty fuzzy. I do remember it being a very fun game though - very "old school" gameplay, though the plot is, IMO, just another rehash of a currently popular RPG theme.

I only remember the official one at Larian - I don't think the game was popular enough to spawn a whole community like D2. I don't know if that's the "newbie hostile" forum you refer to. But honestly, you really don't need the forums - the game is not all that complex.

IIRC, each class has an innate ability (e.g. the thief can "sneak"). Other than that one ability, which is not a big deal, the classes are interchangeable.

I think you're trying too hard. It's not really like D2 where you're going to sink a character with a bad skill point. While you don't have an endless supply of skills and stats, I don't recall feeling any serious "pressure" in the way that you do in D2.

4) Any skills that are critical to have?
See answer to #3. Relax and enjoy the game.

Some things to keep in mind while playing the game. The experience you get from quests scales based on your characters level, so questing after you've killed everything will result in a higher character level (This is real cheesy, and detracts from the game, have no idea why it was implemented). Scorpion trap damage is incredibly bugged, they are the blessed hammer of the Rivellon world. Also, have at least one point in lock pick, it saves lives... Other then that, enjoy the game, it's incredibly hard to mess up skill/stat placement, and beware the Zombie Jake. Cheers!

LOL. I always saved those up for tough spots. Now I know why.

I began to play this game but stopped because I coundn't figure out where and how to place the stupid blue balls in the cave in the first section of the game. I couldn't finish that quest. I guess I have a short attention/patience span for this kind of stuff. The second game sounds a little less enjoyable than the first, according to reviews I have read.
