Sorry about that Mind, the wording confused me.
Really sorry about your friend, maybe you should talk to someone? One should not be alone in a situation like that.

Wont answer that swap question since you should not answer things you dont know the answer too...

Again. I am truly sorry.
My best wishes. and good luck recovering if possible.

Oh hell I'm so sorry :(

I hope none of you in here has ever been driving while you were drunk. It is to completely disregard everyone else. To be completely selfish and ignorant. And it's absolutely no excuse whatsoever, that you were drunk. My dad has worked for the police in more than 30 years now as their doctor, which means he bloodsamples the drunk drivers the police arrest. It's really a horrible thing to do, and I've heard many a gruesome tale of drunken driving...

Hi doc :) Isn't this a bit judgemental? Your opinion only, yes?

Sorry if I got carried away. I was only speaking my opinion of course. I was moved by the sad story BeMindFul was sharing... sorry for ranting.

RoninDog: I've thought about starting at some martial art. Do you have an idea at what to start out with? I won't do Tae Kwon Do or Karate though...

Howdy All...I havent been on the forums much today as there were things at work that needed to get done.

@BeMindful - I am truly sorry for the loss of your friend. It is truly a terrible situation and I dont think that anything anyone says here can make you feel better. At least, if possible try to take solace in the fact that your friend doesnt have to deal with any of the bad things that this world can throw at you, and that he/she is in a much better place now. I hope that you feel better. A wise master splinter once said "The path from inner turmoil begins with an open ear." And...pound meph for a while to easy your spirit.

@Rizzo - Glad to hear your gonna start some martial arts. Suggestions for you....well that really depends on your personality. As I only know you through this forum I cannot necessarily make a good suggestion. From what I have seen of you here Tai Chi and Akido would be good for you because they are more spiritual / sensitive martial arts  . Im sure HolyPade would chuckle if he read that...hehe. While I dont think I can give you straight suggestions I can give you some back ground on martial arts that I or friends have dabbled in and it might be able to aid you in YOUR choice:

1. Muay Thai - Extremely agressive and fast paced, requires lots of endurace and conditioning. Requires a certain amount of fight/will to get into this martial arts as you will access some primal parts of your psyche when doing it.
Very simple but very practical moves that are easy to pick up over time. If you do this you consistently you WILL lose weight. ;) Speaking from experience on this one. Learning a lil Muay Thai will go a long way towards making you a better fighter.

2. Kung Fu - Extremely technical martial art. This will build your flexibility, speed, and precision. It will take a LONG time before you get better at fighting with this one as it is much slower paced and potentially less practical in some cirumstances. It has a spiritual touch, more discipline/focus on the mental aspects of the martial arts. It was also the basis of all martial arts, so much credit here.

3. Judo - Ask HolyPade...hehehe. Judo is a great pratical martial art that is well rounded and will build up several different characteristics. Much slower paced than many other martial arts as grappling can become like a chess game. Being big/strong here will pay off big time while being small will not necessarily hurt you here either. Very similar in respects to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu..the only difference is that BJJ does alot less throws and alot more unconventional locks/submission holds.

4. Akido - Largely defensive martial art aimed at controlling your opponents. Passive in its stance on fighting and will take a fair amount of effort to really become effective. Likes to use the opponents mistakes against them in order to control not necessarily win a fight.

5. Karate/Tae Kwon Do - Great for beginners but not necessarily as beneficial as some of the other martial arts I have talked about. Karate (generally) is largely defensive in my opinion as well and Tae Kwon Do focuses on kicks.

6. Mixed Martial Arts - Now defined as a martial art itself MMA is the wave of the future and will touch on all parts of the martial arts.

7. Weapon fighting, extreme precision here, very technical and slow paced as messing with weapons is dangerous. Fun to learn how to weild all kinds of figting tools though.

8. Jeet Kune Do - Bruce Lees martial art. Extremely aggressive here. Large focus on practicality, and precision. This martial art will teach you how to think outside the box associated with fighting to bring down your opponents quickly and effectively with every movement you make. Totally badass!

For the record I do Muay Thai, BJJ, and Jeet Kune Do.

Best to begin with well....anything that matches your personality.

Hope this helps. Let me know if your interested in learning more about any one in particular. I just spit out some general info off the top of my head.

What a wonderful rainy day, first rains of the season. We needed a bit of a soaking.

@ Rizzo - I live in Pretoria, South Africa. We have summer rainfalls, and lovely electric storms. The weather here is fantastic, can be hot at times, just last week, which is still Spring for us, we were having temperatures at 33-35 C.

Anyway, it is raining at the moment, and hope it carries on like this to the weekend. Good weather to make knives in.

@ BeMindful - I am sorry to hear about your friend. There are not words that can ease the pain at the loss of a friend. I know it may be hard to believe at this point in time that he is in a better place, because everyone always wishes that there were never taken from them in the first place, I know from personal experiences, but I am sure that they are in a better place and only hope that in time your sorrow and heartache will lessen and that you will think of all the positive times your had together. Sounds corny, I know, but I don't always express myself very well.

On a lighter topic, do any of you non-South Africans know/like Biltong. I don't think it is a South African word, but it might have different meanings/words in different parts of the world. It is basically Meat (in our case beef), which has been spiced (normally Coriander seeds, salt, pepper, and brown (Mollasses) sugar)and rinsed in vinegar and then hung our to dry.:worship:

It seems to be like a national food if you like, especially at rugby or any other sports games.

Sorry, my brain is overflowing with thoughts, now that I have had a decent nights sleep. :cheesy:

Anyway enjoy your day

Later

Goodmorning all! Nice day aye? :)
I did not sleep much tonight, since I was on the phone with my scared girlfriend from around 1:15 am to 2:15 am. She thought she had heard something outside her house, and afterwards she found a window open.
Took some time to calm her down and when she finally went to sleep again I was lying worried and scared in my bed. What if someone actually was there? There would be nothing I could do, except call the cops of course. I live a hundred kilometres away... :scared:

Well nothing did happen (phew!) and here I am, at work again. This time another long shift awaits me (from 9 am to 20 in the evening (8 pm for you guys on a 12 hour clock)) but I have the SPF to talk with!

Ronin: well these two sound most interesting to me: Muay Thai and Jeet Kune Do. I have absolutely no idea if you can practice these in my city, but I think I'll try to find out. I'd like to know more about them though...

Have a nice day all! May the sun shine upon you wherever you are

@ronin, You're right, I did have a chuckle on your comment... Very nice round-up on the MA's!

@Rizzo, I'll just add my comments to what ronin said:
Judo, as practised nowadays is much more a sport than self-defense. It can be used very effectively, though, especially when fighting down on the ground.
I can say from the experience that it's very good for keeping yourself in shape and by changing the pace and training partners you can have varied excercises; stretching, aerobic/unaerobic, power training, speed...

Aikido has sometimes been referred to as the thinking man's art. I have to say that it would suit you perfectly in that sense. :) I don't know how good it is in the fitness sense, though. Comments anyone?

This is one of my favourite topics, as you've probably noticed already.

Have a good day everyone!

Tell me some more about Aikido then. I'd still like to know about the Muay Thai and Jeet Kune Do though, since they seem interesting to me too...

Not many people in the forums today eh?

Minor side note: I was thinking about something regarding D2 today. Since I'm about to embark on a HC quest, I've thought about other aspects of the game, to try and make it more realistic. I was thinking about one thing in particular... the map. I'm probably gonna try to completely ignore the map function and never ever look at the map for help. This seems more realistic to me... who the hell makes such a incredible accurate map anyway? Hehe! It could be fun if the map was more like scratched on a piece of old tainted paper or something...

I had an alright day today. I bought a pair of Vans slip ons for work and its taking a while to wear them in so now my feet are sore. Ummm. I'm happy that Family Guy is coming back to us once more. God I love that show.

Not much of a day today. It's been raining since yesterday. There was some strong wind in the night, woke me up at 04:00 AM, then I couldn't fall back to sleep untill somewhere about 06:00 and I had to get up at 07:00, so I'm feeling a bit groggy right now. Hopefully I'll see to be in bed early this evening, so I'll probably feel better tomorow. Let's just hope the rain is going to end, I hate those spongy autumn days, when everything is cold and gray and rain seems to never cease. I strongly believe that the proper autumn weather should consist only of mild late-summer sunshine and light refreshing wind, blowing colourful tree leaves on the ground.

@ Rizzo: I think you're on a wrong track with trying to follow some reality aspects in the game. Next thing you'll start kicking locked chests, on excuse you've forgotten your keys at home. You know, I've always wondered how comes every key you find in the game, perfectly fits on every chest you stumble upon. Doesn't make sense putting those locks in first place, if everyone has free acces to those multi-functional keys laying around.

Rizzo, you should try Capoiera. I found it great fun and its the only martial art you can really show off with. Go research it, seriously.

Well, my days not been brilliant.. No sleep last night so I was pretty tired before things even started.. then I had to cover a 20 mile or so round trip in a car with a busted exhaust system to pick up the new parts to fix it.

Only it turns out, the part that dropped off, are not the only parts of the system that are broken, so we've had to order more parts to be collected/fitted tomorrow, so another 20 mile round trip, because things weren't checked thoroughly this morning.

Also, I've had to rearrange half the top floor of the house for the plumbers to lay piping for the heating system that's been getting installed since monday, and I'll have to re-arrange it back tonight when I want to get some sleep.. it's 3pm now, and they're all of half way done.. considering they started at about 8:15am, this is pretty annoying to me, and that's before we get into the noise, dust, and burning smells generated by the work.

All in all no fun.

And according to the local council directives, we're due to get new windows in about 4 weeks time as well, great timing, remove old windows, and fit new ones, in the middle of frickin November, when it's freezing cold, and pouring down with rain most days. Very smart of them. No, really. :P

Right now I just want some peace, some sleep, and a bloody good meal.. couple of beers wouldn't go amiss.. and neither would being able to curl up in the arms of a loving woman.. but we're not going there today, I really cant be bothered.

Ciao for now.

Morning all, just pulled into work and about to start another long day...exhausted from yesterdays training and going to another training session again tonight....No D2 as I have been a bit tired and busy lately. I hope you are all doing well, esp BeMindful.

@oapwm - beaten the ancients using my tactics?

@HolyPade - Thanks for your comments, they are always appreciated...its alot easier getting information from multiple sources. Feel free to throw in your two cents worth on my comments that I am going to write below! BTW, as you might notice this is one of my favorite subjexts as well

@Rizzo - Some things to consider before considering martial arts....first would you like to do this as a way to become a better fighter or as a way to keep in shape, both mentally and physically (aerobics, discipline, mental control, developing your will power, coordinating body and mind). Now your probably going to ask....why cant I do both? The answer is that you can but with certain limitations. To really excell in these martial arts, IMO you have to have a certain amount of aggression, or fighting will to tap into. This is different than any other kind of aggression....different from when you are lifting weights or jogging and get all fired up. This kind of aggression will be the kind associated with knowing you can and wanting to dominate your opponent. That is why these arts give a lot of return for a reasonable amount of effort. If you honestly do not think you have that kind of personality within you then you can take these martial arts and they WILL make you a better fighter and they WILL keep you in shape.....but you will not ever be really good at it. I have seen people start these arts but thier drive wont allow them to excell at it. While they are good they will never be better than the person who has that primal drive. While all martial arts requires self confidence and will power to excell certain personalities match better with certain martial arts and that is the main point of this rant. If you honestly think you have that drive then I would definately consider these two. If you do not then you could still do these two but you will begin to see that your developent will be more towards the staying in shape side of things.

To answer your questions about MT and JKD.....

Muay Thai is basically Thai Kick Boxing....Ever watch a boxing match? Its that plus the ability to use kicks, knees, and elbows. Long range knees and kicks will bring you into punching range and short range elbows. This martial art is rugged. When training you will get HUGE blisters on your feet, your shins will turn into steel and your body will ache. You will lose weight fromt he constant cardiovascular activity....a training session will typically be at least 1 hour of constant moving, punching, and kicking. A nice thing you will find is that your body will get cut and strong and you will not really need to lift any more weights, your muscles will already be defined and worked enough. In a few months you will be 1000% better at fighting. My personal favority here. Ill elaborate more in future posts.

JKD is a great martial art. With Wing Chun as a base this art was developed by Bruce Lee to combine all the strong points of many martial arts while weeding out the weaknesses. This martial art relies on the building of strength, speed, and precision. Targets typically sought after in fights like the head and center mass will alternate to arms and legs where you can strike quicker than your opponent and move into a closer range to continue striking and/or grappling. Every movement in JKD, even a defensive one, will deliver an offensive strike...the theory here is that every time you move you will be damaging your opponent. BTW I am semi-knew to JKD as I have recently (last 6 months) added it to my over all game so I am not an expert here.

About Aikido - really a very passive martial art IMO. Aikido will probably not boost your cardio much at all, and it might not keep you shape as well as most other martial arts. It does take a defensive stance on martial arts which is well suited for MOST people. Most people arent really willing to hurt other people unless they are seriously threatened and even then..... Any how, Aikido is not my strong point although I know and have fought people who have taken it. Aikido will build up your stregnths in controlling opponents...so that means not much striking. You will learn how to dodge, block, and use your opponents movements to throw, lock, and maneuver them to your advantage. Using this you will most likely not WIN a fight, but you will be able to disable your opponents enough to stop them attacking. This is a very fluid martial art and will require a good amount of timing, precision and dedication before it becomes viable....not to brag but the Aikido fighters I went up against got pwned....in a few seconds ;). Not berating though as this martial art is one of the ones I would consider if I was not very aggressive. It is very simililar IMO to the likes of Tai Chi, which I respect greatly.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks alot Ronin for the more indepth background information. At the moment I'm most thrilled about the JKD, but that might change. I'd lik to hear more tho so just keep em coming :)

Method: sounds like you're having fun at home :p Must be really annoying!

Damn I'm feeling not so good. I should go run or do something active I think. Perhaps I'll delay the weights tomorrow and run tonight instead. It would do my head good I think :D

Goodmorning to all of you nice people! :howdy: I'm back to work after a good nights sleep. Yesterday evening when I got home I decided it was time for a little run, and man that helped. It's been almost two weeks where I haven't had the time to workout, with the exceptance of a few days, and I've really felt the need for some action :)

How are things going out in the world? Method, it's been a while since the last update. Are things still okay, or what? It's been a long time since we heard anything from Nacaa too. I wonder how he's faring in the military?

Have a nice day all!

Is that how it's spelled? I took a 1 week 'intro' class and couldn't continue.. (I was in no where near the kind of shape you should be in if you're going to be spinning around like that). Some of the stuff the instructors could do was amazing! It greatly resembles breakdancing, so therein lies the 'showoff' aspect...

The day has just barely begun for me.. (1 AM, I'm sure my neighbors are all in bed). Just gonna start looking for a job on the gov. website :0 discriminatory employers, I should've been hired by now! :p Wish me luck! >_>

Hope everyone has a good day..
