OT: another Xmas thread

the 17th of December. damn. i have to by smth cuz i still have no present for my girlfriend. i have absolutely no idea what to buy!

so i thought it would be interesting to see your ideas.
what have you bought for your girlfriend/boyfriend??

Girls are suckers for jewelry and clothes. No matter what they say, they will be amazed at either of those two. Maybe promising to take her out on a shopping spree, or get her a nice necklace.

And give with chocolate or flowers. Real sucker stuff i know, but it works. Trust me :wink3:

Just a heads up, many folks are HIGHLY offended by the term Xmas. So you might want to change the title of this thread to be more sensitive to their feelings.

You can never, EVER go wrong with flowers and jewelry. My wife loves to get a dated christmas ornament every year, also. All her friends seem to love the idea, too.

Depending on how you feel about her, there is a thing called a "Mizpah" which is a heart sectioned into two pieces. You wear one piece, she wears the other, put them together they make one heart, one love, etc. Kinda nauseating I know, but women love that sort of thing.

i wont take it further without starting a flame war. maybe there are persons that are offended about christ part. best step to take in this forum is to let your religion at home and enjoy playing Diablo game

I agree, if your offended by that why are you playing diablo. I mean this game makes chopped ham out of the bible.

Back to the original topic, being an EU myself I highly recommend a necklace. You should be able to find a nice sterling silver chain and a semi-precious stone set in sterling. Bonus points for giving her her birthstone, unless she's mentioned a) hating her birthstone, or b) loving a particular stone or color.

Amethysts are nice, unless she hates purple. Garnets are also nice.

If you're cashed up, and she isn't fond of silver, gold is also lovely.

I've been debating what to get my girlfriend as well. I decided to get her a gift certificate for Victoria's Secret, but I would still like to get her some piece of jewlery. I agree with TrubbaNot; something with her birthstone tends to go over well. Personally, I try to give gifts that have a little more function than jewelery. My girlfriend is always asking me for the time, so I'm considering a nice watch.

If you do decide to go with jewelery, give her a stash of pgems. No, wait...only do that if you want to be single again.

I do this for my fiance; there is an artificial Christmas tree I have had ever since I was little that I only decorate with things he or I have made, and these ornaments. It's fairly sparse looking, but with an ornament or more added every year, that should change soon.

I like to buy him something useful, and something fun or silly. This year I bought him slippers, and a stuffed koala toy that came with a robe to wear.

The things I most appreciate are similar; I like a small/plain piece of jewelry, or a charm for my bracelet (this is a very good idea- anything that is a set, like a charm or dated ornament, etc), or something useful like a new CD player or personalized mug. I really think it's the smaller and less expensive presents that mean the most. And don't forget the card! They can be stored safely, or displayed all year.

There are also those silver bracelets, where you can buy seperate pearls made by glass or silver. Makes it a lot easier to buy something next time, since she can always add more pearls. Something like this:

If shes got pierced ears, a girl can never have too many earrings, and they are often more affordable than the larger jewelery.

Books, music and clothes are always nice too.

How 'bout a romantic evening just the 2 of you? Home or some place fancy ^^ And candy!! Lost and lost of candy!

I don't think an invitation for a romantic evening goes well for a christmas present. Apart from that, it is a good idea. And for sweets, be sure it is a good idea before going too far in that direction. Some girls have a keen eye to their weight.

I agree with jewelry, I heartily agree

She IS an EU. i asked her about *.d2x presents. she said she wants no less than a SoJ (i am not joking, seriously). so i have to get something else. not *.d2x probably:undecided:

Man reading threads like this reminds me of how lucky I am to have my girlfriend. She doesn't wear jewelry or makeup or perfume or fancy clothes. She only keeps practical gifts and she re-gifts anything she doesn't like (yeah I didn't know people actually did this either). So the last two years she's gotten powertools because we've been renovating the house. This year she's getting three GMAT study guides because she's applying to business schools in the next year. I'd have to recommend neither of the previous gifts.

One thing we do that is special is we always go out for a very good and expensive dinner (food is her only endulgance). There's an awesome Japanese place near my parents, where we spend the holidays, that we usually go to. They have a fabulous Seafood hot pot (yosenabe) for two that's cooked at your table. Pretty good desserts. And if we've got room the sushi is OK. I also try to cook her something nice during the vacation. This year I'm going for green tea tiramisu. Which gets me to my point of advice. She will love something that you've actually put yourself into (I know I like these gifts best). So even if it's not the 'main' present, try to make/cook/draw/photograph something yourself so she gets a piece of you to remember.

Oh, also wanted to add, the last girl I dated that I gave her birthstone as a Christmas gift broke up with me two days afterwards. Probably just a coincidence but I'll never do the birthstone thing again unless you notice that she likes to wear her birthstone first.

That made me laugh :)

I feel kinda silly saying this but I just got a feeling reading this that you all think it's somehow given that girls like fancy jewelry. I think that while they generally are a good choice, I'm sure everyone knows you have to use your head. If you've never seen her wearing a necklace, chances are she does not like them. Also there are a lot of girls who aren't too impressed with gold, silver and whatnot. But of course it's pretty easy to tell. If shes wearing a hundred leather straps around her wrists, it's maybe best to keep away of the gold stuff...

edit: Brak -> and there it is..
