well let me tell you something as, prob a fellow dutchie, het tweede fase gedoe//2nd phase thingy, was really a vacation... i had it in my last year (part of a testing phase) and jeez, did i had some time to play Diablo and play Bbal aside from school...
Ow and watch your back, your being a big polar beer and such, high school kids dont accept you easily so watch out for those flying pencils and books

Folks, thanks for the advises. Is not the first time I've been teaching, i've already done some at university. I've had my first class now, and my SPD (guy who's classes I get to abuse) gave me a good grade for it, in that he was positive, but there is still a lot to learn. I was pretty pelased myself as well. I managed to get 75% of the class to work, and those other 25% are known slackers.
As for treating the "kids" with respect, sure, I respect them, as long as they do their best. If they want to be slackers, well, sure, but I could care less. I did 7 years of highschool, doubled the 5th grade, and I knew exactly why: I didnt put in enough effort. I never blamed my teachers or my books or the difficulty, but solely myself. That is a really nasty problem for the students: I R don't believe in "can't" but only in "wont".
Basically, it was really nice, and friday I get another go, and I want to get another go, and then to do it better. And I will do it better as my SPD is good and had a lot of helpfull tips.

I dont see him having any problems. Being as though he hasnt totally forgot what it is like to be a kid he can deal with kids!
The "forgotten challenge" or task that I ahve found teachers have forgotten or havent learned is reaching otu and getting those who are the "slackers/under acheivers".
My son, 18 now and a High School drop out is an extremely bright young man. He knows the subjects but didnt put forthe the effort and nobody seemd to care as long as "He doesnt bother others"! OH MAN THAT STATMENT TICKS ME OFF!
I was once called to school to pick my son up as he was to be suspended for 3 days! Well they wouldnt give reasons over the phone so when I got there I found out his suspension was due to him FARTING and then promtly LAUGHING which resulted in CLASS DISRUPTION! 3 freaking days for stupid crap he for one probably couldnt stop and most any child would of laughed about.
Now, this same child at the time would go days or even weeks without turning in work and not one soul would pick up a phone (in the class room) or e-mail me (puter on desk, T1 line) because he "didnt disturb the class"!
Several times I would get him corrected and back on track even with me a single parent working 10-12 hours a day and every time I would BEG them to just let me know if he slacks again. Never did they contact me, I always would fine out a few days after, and not when the problem started thus he would loose that times work thus poor grades.
When I was in school a kid that didnt do his work was top priority and phones where used. Kids that farted and disturbed the class we scoulded, maybe a sever disturbance would get you detention or writing or a wack but the priority was there.
Now, my son is working on he GED and doing well in most areas and looks to attain this soon. He has recently had thoughts of becoming a teach (me I am not so sure but I will support his effort). He has enjoyed his class work and helping others, he is an utter math wiz, knows the subject and helps all in class and enjoys it.
The most shocking thing about my sons grade cards after seeing the neurmous failing grades was that in the "behaviour section" almsot all of his teachers would check the "A pleasure to have in class" after giving him a D or F!?!?!?!? HOW THE HELL can you find it pleasing to have a student that you are force to give a failing grade to when you know damn good and well he is smart enuff to pass your course but YOU let him get away with repeatedly not doing your assigned work?
The USA educational system is a total waste of space! The amount of uneducated people that actually graduate is alarming and the amount of kids that are just simply ignored and allowed to fail is disgusting.
IMO, a teachers upmost interested should be in finding a way to reach every kid. Sure you will fail with some, but the say 1 out of 10 that you can save is worth any failures taht might happen alng the way.

i would quote parts of stinger's rant, but i'm too lazy, so i'll just make some comments...
the unfortunate part is that the majority of children don't have that support from their parents, and don't feel the pressure to do the work to learn what they need to learn. I can't count the number of times one of my parents (my mom especially) has complained after getting frustrated when calling a parent... she gets off the phone and sighs and says, ok, now i know why he/she doesn't care. I guess my point is that you are the exception much more than the rule, Stinger.
As for kids falling through much like your son, its a sad fact that that happens so often. With 6 classes a day of 30 students, that's 180 different students that most teachers see, for 45 minutes, on any given day. There is no way to keep track of all of them, and the quiet ones who cause no trouble but don't do anything are the usual casualties.
As an interesting side note, my mom made a comment last summer that got me thinking- the women's rights movement and empowerment of women has had a terrible effect on education. She went on to explain- when she grew up, women could go to college, get a good education, but couldn't get into the business world and industry... the "old boy's club" kinda thing. So for generations, the best and the brightest women went into education. Now that has changed, and the best source of teachers in America has, in a sense, dried up. The best and brightest women now become doctors, lawyers, etc etc. After all, why would anyone intelligent want to go into a profession that pays poorly (compared to other college graduates), has to listen to whiny children complain all day, and gets no respect from the community and parents? Obviously, there are still many new teachers who are intelligent people, driven by the desire to touch others' lives, but they are becoming less and less common.

All I remember about my biology lessons (geez, that was not even so long ago :scratch: ), is that all students discarded it as a small, unimportant college, and that our teacher never understood that. He now teaches in a university, where all the people come there because they like biology...

i am an elementary school teacher myself (3rd/4th split) and i love it, although it can be stressful. just hope that the parents of your students are understanding and active in their childs education
I will be pondering the correctness of my choice for many nights to come yet I fear, but as for now, I have a peace of mind in that I enjoy it. As for Stinger, I understand your concerns, but trust on your son. My parents always chased me down untill I doubled up 5th grade. The 2nd time around I told them NOT to ask me about my homework, in fact to leave me alone, and in return I would get better grades and pass my finals in one go. Now, roughly 8 years later, I've managed to get my masters and am enjoying myself with one of the most challenging jobs that life has to offer.
Like I said, I know why people slack, and I'll be damned if I let them. But sometimes kids need to fall on their noses to get it.
Oh, and erm, I met a notorious class-skipper who if he skips class one more time he will be kicked from school. Since he wants to study technical medicine on day, he's smart enough not to miss any classes anymore.

I also choose bio as a extra subject in the 2de fase, the problem with the system was the entire subject couldnt botter me at all. I just picked something to make my parents happier. However i recall that the entire year i read what i need to learn 4 tests and had crappy 5, however the final exam was a 6.7 without any studying.. Most people that dont work are the smarter once tho. They know they can miss your knowledge bc they will pass the tests if they want... Thats mostly the problem imo, why would i invest time in things i dont care about and that the only result im looking gets in reach without any time. However i never studied more then 1 day on all test in highschool, never did homework but was always present. And still managed to get all good marks because that second phase is to easy -.-

If I had fluffy teachers I might have paid more attention in class and not be so easily distracted now ..... ohhhhh .... pretty butterfly .... oh ummm ... right - teachers ....
My strongest negative memory of a high school teacher was when the Maths Prof threw a chalk board eraser at me because I was doodling in my notebook. (I went to boarding school in Ireland and for some reason they feel the need to pluralize Math - my mom insists that I wasn't sent away for naughtiness but I KNOW THE TRUTH MOM!!!! I KNOW!!!!! :lol: )

(come on, I was 13 and in tears because it was awful)

Only thing I can realy add to this is what a teacher once did for me. I did not understand basic math. Division with more than 3 decimel places threw me off, this is how bad I was. I had a teacher spot that I wasn't being lazy as was assumed, but that I simply was not getting something. She sat me down and said I am going to assume you know NOTHING about the subject and work from there. She built me up into a lean mean math machine. I have an assciates degree in industrial electronics and a BA Computer Science now and without that lovely woman and her friend who had me the next time around I would never have been able to do that. I'm sure you know about such things as you have been in a teaching position before but I am just doing what that teacher did for me and hopefully some kid will benefit from that story. Good luck it is a tough and noble position you now hold (If done properly) I wish you all the best. Cheers :drink:
