Servers have to notice that you left a game before you can join another one. Slow down for a bit when entering/creating a new game. When you've dropped because of lagg you will mostly find yourself unable to join for a while since the servers still have your char marked as ingame.
Using another char instead can help, but notice that switching chars fast can get you temp-banned so don't do it all the time and too fast.
The 5 seckond rule helps, just wait 5 seckonds between each action when outside a game.

Yeah, I hate it too. Usually, I just switch chars, stay on the switched char for around 30 secs before switching back and waiting another 30 secs with the original character.
I'm kinda lucky though, my computer is a little slow and when I leave a game it takes about 5-10 seconds before my computer un-freezes itself from the Esc screen.

Yeah, it took me a while to figure out why I would get FTJGs all the time. My name/pass is usually only 3 chars/1 char. Just take your time when typing them in, like three seconds or so.
