Meet the Olympians, Winter MFO 2011 Edition

Reading about peoples' characters optimized to the teeth for magic finding is always fun :) Let's see what you ran with during the MFO!

I did approximately 2860 p1 Pit runs (~60.5 hours) with my Berserk Barbarian:

Berserker, level 93 (Haul Pic #1), (Haul Pic #2)
Strength 215 (326)
Dexterity 173 (175)
Vitality 162 (174)
Energy 10 (12)
Life 937 (1652)
FCR 106
MF 636 on kill, 641 on hork
Run Time 76 seconds
Hork 55%

Skills
Berserk 20 (27)
Axe Mastery 20 (27)
Howl 20 (31)
Find Item 18 (29)
Shout 18 (29) (remaining points will go here)
Battle Orders 1 (12)
Battle Command 1 (12)
Natural Resistance 1 (8)
Prereqs 5

Equipment

1.13 Harlequin Crest, Cham'd (50)
Enigma (93)
Grief 1.07 eth BA, 39/370 / Stormshield, Ist'd (25)
Switch HoTO/Suicide Branch, Ist'd (30)
Crafted Amulet, 2 Barb/16 FCR/21 MF (21)
Nagelrings, 30/75 and 29/75 (59)
Chance Guards (40)
Upgraded Goldwrap (30)
War Traveler (50)

Gheed's (40)
33 SCs of Good Luck (228), some with AR/damage/resists

Merc wears 1.07 eth Thresher Insight, Fortitude and Fervor'd Andariel's Visage for fast attack speed (to trigger Might Aura as quickly as possible)

Thoughts

I like this character a lot. I think he might be the most efficient MF character I've seen, on paper anyway. Having the attack on one switch and everything else (Teleport, Howl, Hork) on another is somewhat annoying, and I do mess up and waste time on it, but it's not a very big deal I think. That said, I do think a Barb with 105 on the main switch could potentially be better (interested to see scrcrw's character, who I believe chose this approach). I would never play this character with less than 105 FCR though, since almost everything you do is FCR dependant.

The Grief needs a 38 IAS roll or better to reach the 11 fpa breakpoint with just Goldwrap for IAS. There are certainly other potentially good sources of IAS though, so I imagine a number of setups could be interesting. Note that Beast is not a viable choice if you're constantly weapon switching, as it takes a second or so for the Fanaticism to kick in. For the same reason, a CBF source from the Shield is no good, as you'll get frozen when on the teleswitch, and the effect doesn't wear off when switching to the CBF item. Good thing I realized this before I Cham'd my Stormshield. Speaking of which, the Stormshield is kinda lame, I admit, but I find the 50% DR (Enigma+Shako+Stormshield) to work well for me. I could definitely see other approaches being better. The Shako would have been of the 1.07 variety if I had a spare, but I didn't want to unsocket the Ist from the one I have, since that sees use on most of my characters.

Overall, I'm happy with how he performed in the MFO, but I didn't have much luck. I'm pretty sick of him at this point, and looking forward to trying something else for a while :)

Looks like an engaging and powerful character, but also very demanding to play. It shows a lot of perseverance to play it for the entire MFO.

I don't know how much you tested this, but I just tested this about a couple of dozen times and it kicks in instantly for me. At least as far as I can tell, noting that the difference in attack speed with and without fanaticism was quite noticeable.
Re: Meet the Olympians, Winter MFO 2011 Edition

Interesting. I didn't test it much, I think I did 3 runs with Grief/Beast before deciding it sucked. Part of that was the (possibly incorrect?) fact that the Fanaticism didn't work as I intended it, and part was that I was incredibly unsafe without the Stormshield (a setup like that would require more points in Vitality for me), so it seemed like a no-brainer to dismiss the Beast. Seems I might be mistaken, then.

Also, a Grief PB would probably be better for this character than a Grief BA. I didn't realize base weapon speed made such a difference for Berserk, but apparently a Grief PB would hit the 9 (fastest) fpa breakpoint with only 42 IAS, with up to 40 being provided by the Grief of course.

Forti Ornate Plate
eth Vampy

Thoughts:

Well this is basically PUMPING the Highest posible MF this char can carry. Resist and plus skill are not that much issue here for killing speed. FCR sucks here but that's not a big issue anyways, just using the teleport for positioning of you and your Merc. Here's basically how the process goes, switch to Harmony then run toward Mallah to replenish MP and HP, then run toward the red portal, 3-4 TP to position you and your Merc, switch to Titans, fire 2-3 LF then check the loot then S&E, repeat. LI Pindy sucks so im running at p3 then let my Merc handle him. I died 3x in the entire MFO due to over teleporting. It only happens when my weapon didn't switch from Harmony to titans due to pushing switch key so lightly that it didn't activate so Boooom, 3-4 Criticals from pindy and his minion on the same time JDer is dead. But all in all, for me, its still efficient as ever due to its killing speed.

Re: Meet the Olympians, Winter MFO 2011 Edition

Nice characters. I ran with a standard poison necromancer.

Name: Deuteronomy
Level: 95
Build: Noxious Necro
Total MF: 479%

Stat points: 156 in strength and the rest in vitality

Skills:
Poison Nova and synergies: 20
Corpse Explosion: 20
Iron Golem, Golem buffs, and Bone Armor: 1
Lower Resist: 11 (the rest)

Gear:
Death's Web (2/-49, Ist, thanks Zal!)
"Spirit" Monarch
"Imp Crest" Coronet (2/20, socketed with a ptopaz)
"Enigma" BP
Trang's gloves
Arachnid's Mesh
War Travelers (50)
"Beast Wing" amulet (20%fcr, 17% MF)
"Stone Band" ring (10%fcr, 13% MF)
Beta BKWB (thanks Zal!)
Switch: beta CtA, Spirit

Inventory:
Gheeds (40), Fungal GC of Balance, 30x 7% MF SCs (some with resistances), Cube

Partners in Crime:
Iron Golem: Insight
Act5 Barbarian: Arreat's, Treachery, beta Crescent Moon

Thoughts:
Mercenaries are typically not well regarded for poison necros. Many people use "Infinity," although it does not make a huge difference. Last MFO, Nagisa preferred to use "Insight," freeing up his golem slot for a fire golem. In the week leading up to the MFO, I tried an "Obedience" merc for the quick first kill, then switched to the gire golem approach. I wasn't too convinced by either approach, although the fire golem approach was a bit safer. In the shower on Friday morning, I kept thinking, "isn't there anything a mercenary could carry that would be useful to me?" Then I realized what it was: beta "Crescent Moon," with a 20% ctc static field. I already had my map, so I had to hire the barbarian in Hell. After looking up breakpoints, I came up with a gear setup that hit the fastest swing rate. The normal barbarian attack swings twice, so upon teleporting into a mob, all the monsters on the screen had a 40% chance of immediately losing 1/3rd of their hit points. On /p7, that's a lot of damage. I don't know how much of a difference it really made in my runs, but I was certainly proud of the idea and enjoyed not using an Act2 merc. :D

I started off with an inventory full of skillers, but after becoming frustrated by blue and yellow drops of good item base types, I dropped them all in favor of more MF. My run times did not seem adversely impacted, so I kept things that way.

Future plans:
I am rebuilding as a PvP poison necro as we speak, using with the shiny dweb that dropped. :)

So basically he's a typical dreamer in the sense that his primary damage is from the level 30 Holy Shock while using a level 25 conviction. However, instead of using a Crescent Moon, I used grief and synergized Zeal for physical damage as a back up, but mainly so he could leech enough life to stay alive. (This is hardcore, after all) I noticed that he leeched loads of life against demons (Grief, LoH) but the leech against undead was still a little bit weak. Oh well, for running baal this wasn't really a problem. With MF gear he didn't really have any room for crushing blow, so I outfitted the merc with a guillame's which sped up the Baal kill a little but, but definitely made it a lot more consistent since the Lightning damage has a minimum damage of 1. All in all he was a pretty cool character, but I strongly advise against long running periods with a zealot; I'm very tired of clicking. :p

Did you consider putting CM on the merc?
As in Andy's, Treachery + Thresher CM? A 4.5FPA from the merc should trigger Static quite often removing more life than CB, but of course is capped at 50%.

I used a slightly different take on a Telezerker. I have three lvl 94 barbarians (ww, xx and yy). One of them got respec'ed for this tournament. Due to several deaths, he didn't gain a single point of experience (<10 deaths, but I never recovered the corpse)...

Code:

  • can completely ignore mana burn

The Bad:
  • somewhat fragile (good rejuv reflexes help)
  • not that much mf

Lots of fun to play, but the probably not the last word in terms of efficiency.

The thought crossed my mind, but I really found Reaper's to be too valuable to remove. It really helped against Fanat Minions of Destruction and also kept Baal from teleing all over the place, cloning hisself, etc.

One fix I did try but decided against was using a Heaven's Light instead of Grief. It worked well against Baal, but the run times were about the same overall (slightly slower against the waves) and he didn't leech as much life, so I felt less safe. At this point I'm not worried about it as I'm hoping to never touch that character again :D

I ran this MFO with my (now) Level 93 Frenzy Barb RummskiDeuce . Here is a brief rundown:

[Haul Pic]

Stats (w/ Main Gear):

Strength: 299
Dexterity: 139
Vitality: 282
Energy: 10
HP: 1523
MF: 226
FCR: 73% (on switch)
Hork: 50%

Skills:
Frenzy - 20 / 27
Double Swing - 20/27
Sword Mastery - 20/25
Taunt - 13/18
Battle Orders (on Switch) - 12 / 22
Find Item (on Switch) - 9 / 19

Items:
Helm: Arreat's Face
Sword 1: "Grief" PB +39 / +386
Sword 2: "Grief" PB +38 / +355
Switch Weapon: "Heart of the Oak"
Switch Shield: "Spirit" 33% FCR
Body: Enigma
Boots: 50% War Travs
Belt: Nos Coil
Amulet: Highlord's
Ring 1: Raven Frost
Ring 2: 30% Nagel
Gheeds: 39%
Gloves: 1.07 LoH

Merc:
Helm: 70% Kira's
Body: "Treachery" Great Hauberk
Weapon: Eth Reaper's Toll - Shael

Obviously not maximized for MF running, actully just slightly modified from his normal Trav running gear. I swapped out a skiller for the Gheeds and a few Steel charms for some Good Luck charms. Gore Riders for the War Travs and a ML ring for the Nagel. I could have bumped to 300MF pretty easy, but I didn't feel like playing with the charms.

I didn't use a run counter, so I can only say he started at 91 with the level bar completely empty, and now is 93+. I ran completely at P3, mainly for the increase in potion drops as Mana Burn would suck him dry and I removed his Mana leech. It was a cake walk, PI gave a little trouble until Decrep kicked in, but was never really close to death at any point. To that end, I'll likely never use a non-Barb to run Pindle again...

I was pretty lucky in terms of quality drops as detailed in the haul pic, I picked up 39 qualifiers, leaving a few Ogre Mauls on the ground, saw maybe 50 total qualifiers. The best rune(s) were 2x Ko, which was pretty disappointing.

There you have it, a look at my runner. Thanks to Fabian for the work in setting up the MFO.

Not much to see here, pretty much a typical AT blizzard sorc, although not highly optimized. By the next go round I want to pack more MF and improve the resists a bit to avoid having to pick up so many potions.

Brief Summary
Zayani, pure blizz sorc, level 93

str: 156
vit: 334
Life: 823
Mana: 560
FCR: 105
MF: 419
Resists: 26f/30c/75l/0p

Gear: Fathom (facet), Spirit (35 FCR), 3p Tal, pTopaz shako, FCR ring w/ resists, Nagel (30), Travs (49), Trangs gloves
Charms: 140 MF, 53 Life, 26 Mana

Merc: Might, Andariel's, GBane, eth Insight CV

Necessary Upgrades
I hadn't really prepared or practiced at all, so she's in need of some basic upgrades. The merc needs attention: socketing the helm, upgrading the armor to duress (no fortitude yet), and rerolling his insight (poor ED and aura).

For Zayani herself, the main evaluation will be fathom vs occulus. I think now that i've got some AT running under my belt and have a reasonable map, I can go with an occulus. When I was first getting started (I hadn't spent any dedicated time in AT before last week) the teleport was causing a lot more trouble than it was worth. Swapping to an ist'd occulus and another nagelring would net no change in FCR, roughly no change in resists and add 110 MF. I also need to trade/find some better MF charms to replace some 4/5s with some 6/7s and hopefully shore up some resists.

As you can see, it's more or less the same as Fabian's so I'm just going to say that everyone should do runs with one, it's good fun.

As for Pyro's thoughts about this being a demanding character, it really isn't. I am using 4 hotkeys and one of those is weapon swap. Other skill changes are tele, howl and find item all on the cast switch. Only time I change to the kill switch is when actually am killing a boss. Rest of the time is spent on the cast switch.

Here's a video I made when I was first testing the character out:

Does keeping that jewel in there actually help? I don't want you to feel semi-obligated to be leaving it as is, if there are potentially better options out there.

Otherwise, awesome character! Do you actually use Teleport? It seems your FCR is just terrible with that setup.
Re: Meet the Olympians, Winter MFO 2011 Edition

I used Tele a lot, only in switch though :p Tele to the throne, to meet my friend Baal and to reposition the moron. Only bad when the switch shortcut didn't work (it happens when also clicking somewhere with RMB or LMB I think....). I decided to only reach the 68FCR BP for not needing a 18+ FCR Zon ammy and second FCR ring.

The 15IAS is great for the Zon. And the 15max dmg is used when Lister has to be Jab'ed to death :p Ofc that a 15AllRes/15IAS would also be great or a Cham if I really couldn't fit CBF somewhere else, but for now it's fine :D

Thoughts:
This is my favorite AT-runner. Her FN (RMB) wipes out crowds in her immediate vicinity, and her max'd out FO (LMB) takes out anything outside FO range. She also has a fabulous AT map, with 3 corners right inside the entrance that each usually spawn with 2 bosspacks each. I really love FN as a skill. I've respecced her a bunch of times trying to figure out the best way to spend the rest of the skills. She started as a dual-nova gal. Nice for questing, but not really necessary for /p1 AT-running. Next, she had max'd warmth and a bit in the FW synergy. She never ran out mana, but the FW wasn't all that useful (many CIs are also FI, and the merc kills them fast enough anyways). With the prayer/insight merc she doesn't hurt for mana, so the warmth was kind of unnecessary. So I went back to the cold skill tree to look for a ranged attack. She already has FO max'd, so throwing another 20 into ice bolt, really makes it awesome. General approach is to teleport into a pack, spam a few Fnovas, launch an orb, and go back to the FN. Very fast, very effective.

Great MFO - congrats again for all the great finds.

I'm with bcoe on this one, she's also my favorite AT runner. I made her sometime last year, always planning to try her out in the AT. I don't think she'll ever rival a Blizzsorc at AT running but she comes very close.

I want to mention Greebo's lovely Willow thread. There was some nice info there that helped me perfect my setup.

One thing I forgot to try out was a Might Merc. I'd found a nice map and did some gear testing when I realized I would have to go back to NM to hire one...:hammerhead:. Typical of me to forget about something like that. This was the day before the start of the MFO so I didn't feel like having to find a new map so kept the Prayer Merc who I found to be a good choice. Escence didn't quite make it to lvl 96 during the MFO so I did the last 100 or so runs in the last couple of days with a Might Merc and I prefer him over Prayer. Any poison damage taken is nicely countered by Prayer but also easily managed with the occassional Rejuv when using a Might Merc.

Nova wasn't exactly a strong second attack, but Escence was made as Dual Nova and will remain so. It did help shave off a second or so on the occassional run. :)

I timed my first 150 runs or so and they came out to 45 seconds average. I suspect run times increased to somewhere around 50 seconds average by the end of the MFO.

Total Runs: ~6K
Average Boss Packs: 5-6
Average Run Time: 45-50 sec

@bcoe: I'm mssing 10FCR in your gear

Frost Nova sorcs and teleporting Berserk barbs... it's amazing to see that there's still innovation when it comes to character builds. gg.
Re: Meet the Olympians, Winter MFO 2011 Edition

scrcrw: Sexy circlet
Kefir-Tribe: word :D

My sorc is so very humble, suffice it to say she has 110 mf, +3 skills, +2 blizz. Hp and resistances I don't want to talk about :p Merc has iron pelt, undead crown and kelpie snare.

No wonder everybody does so well, seeing the equipments on the characters :p

How I mentioned I started this char week before MFO from scratch, but I don't think it was any special achievement. Her start was slower, but final gear didn't limit her in any way.

My map wasn't ideal (a bit farther from WP in comparision with standards), but I believed it has a potential, and indeed it has. I don't deal with run time much, I'm not a power-player by any means.

During last year I almost quit SC, but now I have another goal. I want to complete 1.13c grail with this one char, she's made the biggest step right now. And after that, as a reward, I made her Matriarch :).
