Hopefully this is slightly more coherent than my last post. Like most, I was short on sleep, long on caffeine and was glad to get the results sent so I could crash.

The Necessary Thank You's

Thanks to jjscud for running another great MFO. Thank you for putting so much effort into something which is a real highlight of the SPF. :)

Also appreciated is the effort by the category supervisors for providing a nice write up on the updates. I know how tough that can be when you aren't receiving any updates. :D *cough* I confess to being lax about it this time.

Also kudos and congratulations to every competitor. While some may be contrained by time and RL, the MFO brings out the OCD in a lot of people here and that's always entertaining to watch. :D


The Olympian: Atil

Well unless you've been in a cave, you know who she is. Atil, my Infinity-holding light sorceress. I always loved this girl; I tried a standard stick-on-moron variety and preferred Atil off the bat. She is going for 99 and this MFO made a huge inroad into that.

The gear was swapped around a little during the MFO (see below) but I came back to this set up because it gave me the power that I liked with a reasonable amount of MF.


Her training

Becauses she holds the Infinity she is incredibly tight gear-wise.

Before the MFO she had:
* Maxed (and a some stacked) resists
* FCR - 117 breakpoint on both switches
* FHR - 86 breakpoint on teleport/CtA switch and 30 breakpoint on Infinity switch
* MF - 100

MF was never a priority for her and for a long time she only had the MF from the Infinity. For the MFO Pentathon I splurged on a Gheeds and with a tiny twink she hit the 100 mark. That was good enough for me.

So before the beginning of the MFO was practice a few runs on Baal to get back into the groove before trying to get a little more MF on her. Nothing too drastic because I believed that 150 MF would give a nice balance to diminishing returns and speed/safety. I have pretty shoddy teleporting skills so I'd rather have less MF and more chance of survival. :D

Thanks to some great finds (probably by Mungo), fantastic trades and generous gifts, Atil started the MFO with:
* FCR - 117 breakpoint on both switches
* FHR - 86 breakpoint on teleport/CtA switch and 30 breakpoint on Infinity switch
* Resists - all maxed except cold (71) (although very little stacking on the others)
* MF - 129
* 1830 ish life after BO
* I think the lighning damage was around 18k but I confess to not being entirely sure :D
* Item of note: 59 mana/10 life charm. I liked this so I relied less on blues. The moron used Reapers and with the charm I could live off the blues that dropped for a few runs

For me the MF increase was huge. 100 to 129 was awesome and I was really pleased with that increase. I know that I could never compete with guys running 400 MF, nor with the incredible run numbers some will do. I was in this for the xp but the odd shiney would help to keep it interesting for me.

While I fully expected to be last - it is no joke to say that I am an incredibly lazy runner who gets bored easily - I did intend from the start to make a decent attempt at an xp gain.

I had another watch or three of Denton's video's and also DC's runs in the same thread. Basically to see if I could improve my positioning. Poison was doing nasty things (despite 25% PLR). All my belts aret set up red, purple, blue, scrolls (TP and ID) I didn't really want to drop ID scrolls for antidotes. (Only having one scroll was less of an issue when I stopped hitting things on the way down.) I did replace the column of reds with purples. During the MFO I reduced my full rejuv stash from 1020 to 800. One thing that amazes me is that if you watch those vids I don't think either ever touch a potion. Just incredible.

Although I didn't bother with it until late, krovac's info on
getting the game to remember the player settings did shave a few seconds of each run during the 8 runs per 30 minutes blast at the end.


Her MFO Goal

My goals changed through the MFO and they were never MF goals.

Initially I wanted half a level. When I realized how slowly the bar moved even at P8 and the effort involved, I changed my aim. My new goal was to get my xp bar to show past the little running icon in the task bar.

As I kept on trucking and the xp bar moved further, I returned to my original half-bar goal. I didn't quite achieve that, but I came darned close.

I never sat there thinking "C'mon Mang Song!" but I will confess to a few "*profanity* why are you white and not gold" moments. :)


The Baal runs

Yes I'm eighty paragraphs in and I get to the runs. Aren't I awesome?

Standard teleport down (usually on P3 because a) I'm too lazy to change it and b) I was hitting the boss packs on the way down). The waves were a P8 and Baal at P3.

Light Immune Lister was killed and not parked. (It bugs me not killing him.)


That was the week that was

I started off on the map I knew well which allowed me to get side tracked by killing a few things on the way down. Flayers, boss packs and those flying things which I'm convinced hold runes. Baal had to wait on numerous occasions while I wapped them with CL/L. Things died faster when I remembered to switch from CtA to Infinity. Amazing, eh.

If I hadn't naffed around, I could have got more runs in but I probably wouldn't have; I'd have burnt out too soon. Hitting those packs made it interesting and I got some nice finds (BK sword, Nightwings). It did mean I had to mule a little more frequently. What I picked up was from bosspacks, I kept A85 stuff at the bottom of my stash and minion/Baal stuff at the top. I was muling any time something dropped from the A85's so that it wasn't mixed up with the Baal finds.

I genuinely did NOT run over the first weekend. It was double xp weekend in CoX and so I played that instead. While it may seem rude to enter the MFO then ignore the first three days, it was a conscious decision by me and the right one. Had I ran those additional days I think I would have just given up earlier. Kudos to anyone running the full length of the MFO for many many hours each day. More stamina than I! :D

What was meant to be my first update was sent mid-week. At that point my score was 27.4

Basically I'd got my fifth qualifier which is when I always feel the pressure is off. I was running fairly consistantly but stopped when I was tired. There's a fine line between 'in the zone' and 'autopilot', I almost crossed that line a couple of times. I've already posted the most scary near death which is this one.There was one other that was similar but I rejuv'd then saved and exited so it didn't look so scary.

My next score increase was a Giant Skull. Which for some reason I thought was a Wormskull and almost left on the ground. This is why I pick everything up. Sometimes the braincell just doesn't fire quite right. :banghead: But there were steady improvements over that update and I was more than happy with the xp let alone the drops.

Most of the drops were coming from Baal so a drop from Lister's pack was of note. I didn't recognize what it was so that indicated something possibly good. So I grab it, kill Baal, exit and hit GoMule. It was my best score through out the competition.

That stuck a fire under me and I went on a hunt through the stashes to try and improve Atil's MF further. Plus I was hoping to to prove that I had The Knack of MFing. Well I wasn't suffering with that song/pun going through my head alone. Which it has since I found the thing.

By replacing the mana/life grand charm with MF charms she got to 150 MF. That seemed reasonable and I did get some tiny improvements at the lower end of my score.

The map seemed on a dry spell for drops so I re-rolled it a few times. My theory was that if I got normal set/uniques I'd re-roll because it was rubbish but if I got nothing, I'd wait until I got a (low) qualifier because that proved that map could drop decent stuff. Yes I know it doesn't make sense but I don't care. :p

By Friday, I was getting tired and really wanted to see another decent shiney. While I spend alot of time talking about wanting to be last, it's because I don't want to embarress myself by saying how hard I'm trying only to still come last. :) I made a hard decision to drop a skiller. It was a tough choice because of the life I'd lose. That and and stealing a resist/mf charm from Freezyaballs my Tal's Blizzballer, got Atil to 171 MF while keeping her resits/fcr/fhr.

At the same time, I thought I'd muck with the moron. Not that he got to kill much with an 18k Lightning shooting around but if he could get last hit, maybe I could top the 200 mark. (MF amounts might be a few points off. The time was a bit of a blur.) So I took Andy's off and shoved Stealskull then a Harly on him (both with Ptopaz). Well the leech was good for him but I couldn't be bothered to hang around while he last hitted Baal. So back to Andy's Visage with Fire res jewel.

By now I was getting tired of the LI Lister outbreak. I swear I never see a LI Lister unless I'm running with Atil, Tvashtar or Shein (my three light sorceresses; Chircle will probably have the same problem later on). Anyway, time to address that issue so I tried Mungo's BotD on my moron. Lister went down a LOT faster (the BotD gave him and additional 2k damage over the Reapers) but Baal leaped around like a flea convention on crack. In a novel reversal of roles, I cursed Baal. Mainly caused by his mana draining me. So it was back to the Reapers.

Next up was Guillaume's for the merc. It was ok for a while; it did make a difference on Lister and Baal. The crushing blow was helpful for me too because without the mana charm I was carrying, I was more reliant on blues. Previously I'd survive pretty much on what I picked up. Now I was having to buy them every run or two. And losing a skiller hurt my damage.

However, Guillaume's brought it's own issue. Namely :censored: Bartuc. I did play 'hunt the char with the socket quest' for a while so I could add a fire res jewel in it. But eventually I couldn't be bothered and resorted to TPing the moron away and potting him. Which was appropriate as he was a bit of a plant. (That'll be one joke which will be totally lost on non-gardeners.) It was frustrating and he was responsible for eating a good number of the 200+ full rejuv's I burnt during the running.

Anyway, Saturday was bleak with only one tiny score increase. By the end of Saturday I was running very slowly due to fatigue. I wasn't liking the 16.6k damage on Lightning but stuck with the high MF in the hope of 'one more good shiney'. My low damage contributed to the merc dying. He got called a few names that night and one squeal of frustration made Mungo think I'd died.

I didn't get a lot of sleep that night. I just couldn't sleep despite being very very tired. I then started debating returning to 136 MF (IE 129 that I started with and the res/mf charm from Freezyaballs) and adding two skillers getting damage back to 19k or stick with the 171MF/16.6k set up or somewhere in between. I was too tired to do the math and was pretty set on the high MF figure because at least I knew I'd be more careful with less damage.

Amazingly I actually became alert during Sunday - no doubt thanks to an excellent meal Mungo cooked - and I thought "Stuff it, you started for the xp, finish for the xp". Off went five MF and one life/mana charms and on went two life skillers. 20k damage here I come! At the same time I gave the moron his Andys back. According to the weapon speed calc, Reapers + Treachery should get him one breakpoint; Andy's doesn't get him to the next one, he'd need IAS on the weapon. Sunday was an incredible slog. I kept finding reasons to take a break and wander off. I re-rolled the map at least three times hoping for a better drop. This was one I re-rolled. Partly because it wasn't dropping and partly because of horrible Throne spawns even on P1.

I really wanted that last qualifier to have double digits but .. I couldn't get it. But I tried more in this MFO than any other one; including the Pentathon where I used almost all the available time.

At the end I pulled eight/nine runs in 30 minutes. No idea on the totals of hours ran or runs made; I don't count. As near as I can tell from how far the XP bar moved maybe 400. Maybe less.


The drops

I am a pack rat and I did pick up almost everything which dropped from Baal and his minions. Plus quite a bit from those bosspacks found lurking enroute. And a few side tracks to LK, Outer Cloister, Pits ...
