Max amounts of mods on a rare weapon?

Ok, what is the maximum amount of mods on a rare weapon? And does ethereal/ # of sockets count as a mod? I've always wondered.

No, etheral does not. Natural sockets do not appear on magics/rares. Sockets from larzuk/cube don't count as affixes.

Any rare item can have a maximum of 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes (and only the yellow weaker versions, which you can see at the arreat summit)

So you have to socket the rare for two sockets at larzuk? And by "the weaker yellow versions" do you mean they are added on to the 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes? If so, how many can there be?

rares can spawn with sockets. if they dont spawn with two, you can only punch one into it via larzuk.

Any rare item with 2 sockets used one of its affixes (a prefix) to get those 2 sockets. So that item would have a maximum of 2 additional prefixes and 3 additional suffixes. Like CDM said, the rare can spawn with only one socket too (which does count towards the 6 quota).

However, getting Larzuk to add one socket does not count as an affix, as lumpor said. Those items can have 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes, in addition to the Larzuk-granted socket. But Larzuk will never grant more than one socket on a rare-quality item.

Ethereal doesn't count as an affix, and neither do most of the +skills (aka automods) that you get on many class-specific items.


Don't forget that some affixes can add more than one benefit. For example, a 'Fools' affix is in popular demand, and it adds to both Attack Rating and Maximum Damage, so the readout of the item might 'look' like it has more than 6 affixes, when it really doesn't.

Too bad most of the other mods are weak. If it had decent other mods and some staff mods, oh boy.

that's just fool's, it adds both ar and max dmg + clvl
So that's just a fool's claw in a bad base item with no other mods ;)

@struikje: Fool's only adds, at most, 49.5 maximum damage (the max damage adds 0.5 per level). That claw has both Fool's and Grinding (0.75 max damage per level) prefixes. Still a bad base, though, yeah.
