I built Eliza to be a Countess runner, and she's the first sorc I've made with any significant investment in lightning skills (beyond the usual 1-point wonders). Wow, Static Field with 105FCR and lots of +skills for radius works wonders! Not to mention the fast/low cost teleport.

I was worried early that the convenience of FO would lead me to favor it over CB, but once I started hitting the Cold Immunes in Hell, this concern went out the window. Static/CB delivered damage more quickly to just about all but Lightning Immunes. In the end, Cold and Lightning use was fairly balanced.

Mana potions were used extensively while leveling (base Energy), but once Eliza was able to slap on all the +% max mana items lack of mana was rarely a problem.

As I posted in the IFT, while gambling FCR rings and coronets with my lvl99 (from 1.09) Javazon, Anya produced a Griffon's Eye. That certainly made things easier for Eliza (who only needed one more level to equip it at the time it was gambled) as FCR was easier to come by. I tried a +3skills/+16 lit dmg Eschuta's Temper for a while before getting the Griffon's, but at the time I wasn't getting to 105FCR with it anyway and the extra dmg made little difference - Occulus just has more to offer overall.

The Act 5 merc was really just for a change of pace from Desert Warriors. Brom eventually made for a decent meat shield, and the occasional knockback was sometimes useful, but he died a lot. A defiance or HF merc might have been more useful or hearty, but we made it work.

/players 8 continued through Act 1 Hell. She had to park one monster (which I hate to do), a LI/CI Yeti type that regenerated faster than Brom could hurt it. I probably should have altered his equip to add CB/OW, but instead dropped to players 1 for much of Act 2 and entirely thereafter. One death in each A1/A2 Hell, but no serious problems until Act 5. Two deaths and several re-rolls of the Ancients, until none were both CI and LI. The first three levels of the Worldstone Keep were a breeze (one level had only FI!), but the Throne of Destruction more than made up for it. Gloams and Oblivion Knights, with Mummies to raise them! Two more deaths there, after which Baal's minions and Baal were, as is often the case, anticlimactic.

From now on, Eliza will pay many visits to the Forgotten Tower, until the Countess quotes Herman Melville -

Well, where to begin,,...ahh, her past. She was a spoiled little brad, everything she wanted she got. Not surprisingly, she thought she was the center of the universe. Her father was the mage-lord of thunder and lightning and her mother,,..let's just keep it at a little frigid.

Being the spoiled brad that she was, she drove her magic instructors mad. They tried to teach her lighning spells and they tried to teach her how to throw bolts of ice and how to create icestorms. But, as she felt the center of all, somehow the magic went bad and only revolved around her. Hence her stagename; Origin Of perfect spheres, OOps. (I know, nova and frost nova are cirkels, but OOpc wouldn't spell anything.)

To get to the point, OOps is a max vita, no blocking, nova/frostnova sorc. I must say twinked to the teeth. And that is just nice. Teleing in the middle of packs without good twinking gear is byebye sorc.

I did parts of normal and NM in MP games, but i wanted to do Hell in single play. I see hell as where the challenge is. She turned out to be item dependent, but completely viable (at P1)

about the play:

First of all; Frost nova rocks! End game that is. Damage is now around 700, more then i expected at this stage. And it works better then my nova. The wsk rolled little flayers at one level, just to much fun. Gather a large pack of flayers, tele in the middle, frost nova like mad. The FN keeps them slow and in hit recovery. So spamspamspamspamspamspamspamspam,,...everything in the cirkel is dead, stop spamming. Let more get close...spamspamspamspamspam. All is dead. I ended up using FN all the way through hell and played like a pure coldsorc, skipping all the CI monsters.

She actually died only once in hell, when i tried to do the same in the CS with the venom lord seal pack...,,,doh:laugh: 30% damage reduce and full resist wouldn't save my but.

Future? Level her in the AT untill i can use griffons and arachs, i want to have some 105% fcr fun. See if i can get up to 1k FN damage. Maybee i'll enter next mfo with her.

Finds? None, zip, zilch. Hellforge was eld,sol and ko. Meh.

[edit] I use FO on bosses and the ancients. Yeah, i'm impatient, and pre-fantom frostnova didn't quite do the damage.

Matriarch Leisha - CL/FO Sorc

The first ever sorc I made (and second ever character), long before I had any clue what I was doing, was a CL/FO Sorc, and I've finally gotten around to doing one of these properly. Well, as properly as I can with the measely gear I've collected since my restart. The intention as to make a pure Lightning sorc for running purposes, but the beauty of 1.13 is that you don't have to suffer through sitting back and letting your merc kill half the monsters in hell.

Not much to report, other than that I've gotten used to fully twinked characters, and now playing sorcs without any skillers and plain +3 ammys seems decidedly under-powered, especially for a dual tree build. Normal and NM was done using Chain Lightning for the most part, and I only began developing Orb once CL, Lightning, and the Mastery were all maxed. I swear the listed damage for FO is not accurate. It is far too effective for skill that only does 300-odd damage. Certainly the Orb itself does far more damage than that. It is still one of my favourite skills, because it's so effective, even without it's puny synergy, and the few skill points required mean you can pick almost any other skill you like to go with it.

I decided I needed a new MF'er and also, a unique character built to be invincible.

Boo and yay, respectively. What builds are they? You're slower at getting to the point than a horned toad covered in molasses.

Beacon and Sycorax? Why the names?
"Beacon" was a tip of the hat to a fun exchange of fictional dialogue between a lighthouse and warship--as a power not fully recognized.

"Sycorax" was the name of a powerful sorceress from Shakespeare's The Tempest. (Though she was actually only referenced by other characters since the play takes place after her death.)

So a lighthouse and a zombie sorc?

Thoughts on Beacon?
-The Blova sorc play style is actually very similar to an optimized werebear in terms of hotkey coordination. Instead of Maul, Hunger, Fire Claws and Shockwave, the player has to constantly alternate between Blizzard, Static, Nova, and Teleport. The kicker though, is that they are all right-click skills. When I'm running at peak killspeed efficiency, I look like a one-handed Ray Charles. Believe it.
-8 frame Nova is a mana hog. To fuel it, I utilized a "Call to Arms" buff and a 1.07 mana-per-kill ring.
-3 piece Tal's is just sexier than that Skullder's/Arachnid/Mara's combo. Gotta love the purple.
-Since I collect stat points like an emo kid collects self-inflicted Gillette scars (Mach 3 for thrice the pain), I decided I'd see how long I could hold out spending any stats and skills on Beacon. So, I set about joining up with mah MP friends and did my best to leech to a respectable level before actually contributing to the killing power of the group. So, how long did I hold out? Why don't you take a guess.

-That redonkulous blood mana curse wasn't as bad as I originally thought it would be, but it was still pretty annoying.
-Manaburn is a mod to be feared.
-This sorc can tank /p8 Baal runs as well as most melee characters. Killing anything in a timely fashion is another story. Still, there's something to be said for a caster that can keep up with the big dogs in the tanking department.
-Poison damage ignores ES so that's why there's an emphasis on sexy poison resists in case anyone was wondering.

Did you find any decent items in the course of your dual journeys through Hell?
Sure. One of the characters was a MF sorc so I did make out with a few pretty slick items with this probably being the most notable.

Less cowboy-themed write-ups and more Druids. Also, with time permitting, maybe a lax, but stylishly themed 4-man MP group if I can coerce some people into it.

And StormSpirit answered the call.

The name came from my other favourite hobby of mine while I was growing up, Magic: The Gathering. I was flipping through my old Ice Age set looking inspiration for a name when I came across Storm Spirit, with the quote above as it's flavour text. Being a White/Blue/Green creature that does elemental damage, I found the perfect name for the most exciting D2 character I've made to date.

I've made other sorcs before, even mat'd a meteorb (my first) and a blizz (my second). Lots of my builds in other classes have made it to guardian, but haven't inspired me to finish them. The difference between this sorc and my others was that I planned her for her end gear (that I had already acquired) and to be the one build to do what's eluded me so far: run the WSK and Baal.

Background and Levelling:
The inspiration came from sirpoopsalot's triple Mat thread here, especially the part about choosing Nova over Fireball if you have the full Tal's set and +12 skills overall (and not having the uber gear he has). He went into great detail about why FO/Nova that I won't repeat here. I have a post there for when StormSpirit was doing NM Baal runs to level up to wear the full Tal's set. I won't go into detail about the early levels, but it went something like this:

Normal: a boring grind, just like it is for any new sorc. It didn't start to get fun until I could start wearing good gear such as Vipermagi, Spirit sword, Visceraturant, etc. Those plus the full Iratha's set and Nat's Soul got me to Baal to run until level 45 or so.

Nightmare: I've never killed so quickly or easily! Any cold immune boss I met went down in seconds (on /players8). Sometimes I forgot to change to /p3 for Baal, but I didn't even notice. Ran him to level 71 to wear the complete the set. Check out my post in sirpoops thread listing my stats and the gear I had on at the time.

Hell: Here's where I thought I would have problems. Boy was I wrong! My Cold and Lightning resists were already maxed, and my charm collection got Fire to 74. I used Act1 to get my merc up to my level, and then it was off to find Baal. Went to /p1 to speed things up.

Andy - Andy who? FO for the win
Duriel - Again no problem. The hardest part of act 2 was the viper temple level 2, where I usually die at least once. This time it was Nova putting the vipers into hit recovery mode that saved my skin.
Travincal - Nova for the cold immunes, Fo for the rest. Had to resurrect my merc a couple of times. This was where I realized +20 resistances on him won't cut it anymore, so I replaced his shaftstop with a Duriel Shell.
Meph - Dropped as fast as he does with my level 90 bliz sorc. Amazing.
Diablo - He was a wuss. Static / FO took him down fast. OK's were annoying, but went down fast to Nova. Lord de Seis got me due to a miss-click (I teleported right into his group instead of a FO). Playing D2 on a laptop with a touch pad has its hazards.
Ancients - No one spawned dual immune, so they went down quickly (after a lot of teleporting)
WSK1 - I can't remember what was on level 1 but I tele'd past them to get to level 2.
WSK2 - Gloams. CtA plus 75% lightning resists means I didn't have any problems. I cleared out the whole floor.
WSK3 - No CI. Another full clear without issue.
ToD - Blood Lords, OKs. Nova is so broken. So is Iron Maiden to my merc.
Waves - all went down quickly. No dual immunes, no nasty mods that I noticed, and my merc somehow survived. This was done on /p8.
Baal - He tried to suck away my mana. He tried to teleport around. He tried to freeze us. He failed miserably. On /p3 it was no match, he went down in 30 seconds. Of course being Baal, he also gave me no good drops. :p

The Future:
- More WSK / Baal runs to level up more and to help finish up my grail.
- I probably won't change the gear because 344% MF is plenty.
- I realized while I was typing up the gear that I'm 1% away from the 105% FCR breakpoint. A perfect Spirit shield will fix that.
- Once my merc has the strength I have an upp'd Guardian Angel w/UM waiting for him.
- This will be my new HF rushing sorc. I was using my blizz sorc before which had a horrible time in Hell /p8. Yes it's cheesy, but after only 5 HF rushes I was able to make both HotO and CtA. 👍

But I ran into something here at the forums while trying to decide what sorc variant I would really like.

For the record, I have played a CL/FO and a Meteorb way back. Hadn't had much success with the Meteorb, perhaps because it was a restart. Unlike with the CL/FO where she was twinked heavily. She did the countess way too many times and had earned to cube a vex but... anyway...

Killing Mephy at p7 settings. Had no really significant drops yet.

I've played her twinked at the onset and hadn't really much trouble except at Act3 NM with the gloams. Died there many times mainly because I couldn't bring resists up.

Hell was a different story after killing Mephy. I had to reroll Hephasto thrice as he spawned CI with some other nasty mods.

Then I got stuck at ROF and can't kill Diablo because of the CI Obilivion Knights. My moron has really a poor gear and could not hold his own even for just a while.

Good thing as I joined Ashmer in Hamachi and together with Tank, they rushed me all the way to kill Baal, getting the socket and anya quest too.

So again, thank you to Ashmer and Tank. Looking forward for some more MP sessions, it really was fun albeit it was only a short one.

I've tried running Baal's minions last night (for levelling up), but it was too much for me and my merc to handle. So I decided to run and MF Meph while acquiring some experience too.

That's pretty much it. I don't know what will my next project be, I think I'm gonna stay with my IcyManipulator for a while and see what turns out on my runs.

And oh, she was really Level 80 when she reached Mat status. I was lazy posting last night as it was 1:00AM here already.

Started out as a melee character and pouring points into Concentration. I filled Blessed Hammer up until to level 5 IIRC, then maxed out Concentration while I was still meleeing. Then I opted to fill the BH synergy Blessed Aim while leaving BH to a low level so the mana is kept at a minimum and I can afford to use BH when I was level 27~. I remembered I was able to start using BH on the Act 2 Canyon of the Magi. After I have maxed out BA, I proceeded to max out BH then Vigor, not forgetting to put 1 point in HS and Redemption as soon as it was available.

Redemption is a big help to fill up the mana as I used to run around until enough enemies are following me, then I start to spam the hammers. After they all fall down, I use Redemption to fill my mana bulb pretty quicly. Either that, or just chugged a blue potion.

Played thru Normal and NM with p8 settings except for NM bosses where I had to lower the settings to p1. As soon as I reached NM Meph, I made some runs just to get some decent items like the Skin of the Viper Magi and the Magefist. I found a wand that has a 20% FCR and adds a lot of mana and that was I was using almost throughout his career until I farmed Hell Mephy and got the Wizzy along with the Mara's, Harley and HoZ (lucky me).

Hell was really HELL and was a pain in the ***. Played p1 all the way. But after I got those items, Hell became pretty much of a joke as I was just walking around spamming hammers. Had some near death experiences after I found those gears but mainly due to my laziness and cockiness. Didn't really had a hard time taking down Diablo, we just literally went at it standing next to each other toe to toe, mano amano. He didn't last that long though. As for Baal, I didn't have much trouble with his minions. Baal didn't gave me too much of a trouble too also except for his mana burn. That's why he lasted much longer than his brothers. Lolz.

My next project would be a Meteorb, but then again it might be a CL/FO type, but one thing is for sure. It will be a sorc.

Nice, simple 2 skill character (obviously I'm not including teleport). Static creeps in there too since I used it a ton to help during orb cooldown/before spamming nova. Definitely nice to have a static that can hit from orb's sweet spot.

The Pul was nice, and an ilvl 9x charm is always welcome, but considering I was questing through NM with ~250 MF and Hell with over 350 I was hoping for a little bit more.

Questing:

Normal:

Jewel of Envy mask + gemmed bow til 15 (won't be going that long again without a twinking break so early on, bow slowed down around lvl ~10), then 1.09 Ravenclaw until 30. Put on Peasant Crown, Telling of Beads, Spirit sword, visceratuant, nat's boots, rare ring with big + mana, manald, Skin of the Vipermagi, and chancies, and owned.

Put skill points in required skills and utilities as they became available, then saved rest of the points and raised FO, CM and LM concurrently until I ran out of saved skill points. Left normal at level 50.

Nightmare:

Was almost entirely a blur. Teleported through as much as possible; gained a whole 2 levels from Act I through the beginning of Act V. Levelled to 58 with Shenk/Eldritch runs, ported through to Baal. Levelled up to 76 for Griffon's with Baal runs before moving to Hell.

Had maxed FO in normal, so I got CM to 15 hard points (eventually plan to have 2x chilling skillers and an SoJ or a DF to make up the remaining 15% res), then maxed LM (to strengthen nova without increasing mana cost, before dumping points in Nova.

Hell:

As you can probably guess from the level she entered at compared to the level she finished up at, I teleported through most of Hell. Stopped to full clear AT and the RoF, and kill bosspacks in the CS, but other than that it was mostly teleport. No real problems, several NDE's and 2 stupid deaths. I stress the stupid part.

First one was after killing Andy. I was poisoned and at 1 health but didn't hop into the portal because I was doing some calculations, so a Dark One sauntered up out of nowhere and, true to his name, went undetected and slaughtered me. Second one involved blind teleporting in the Spider Forest into a mass of Might enhanced Extra Strong insects surrounded by flayers while I was amped.

Ancients required one re-roll. First time they had fanatacism + amp and 2 were CI/LI. Second time they still had fana + amp, but only one CI/LI. Split them up, taking out the cursed leaper first, and made short work of them.

Throne Room had 6 OK's, 6 Gloams, and a few Frenzytaurs, and the level itself had a stair trap of PI, ES, EF Frenzytaurs backed up by Gloams on the other side. Fun times. Luckily FO is good at taking out gloams without them shooting back, and the OK's in the Thone Room were all nice enough to huddle together for my Nova. Waves were no problem. Lister spawned FI/CI, so I had to clear out his minions first then static + nova him to death, which was no problem.

Baal was a chump and went down with barely a whimper, like he always does to orb, even though he cloned himself as soon as we teleported on top of him.

Thoughts:

I can definitely see why people have been raving about this build: it's quite strong, there are very few monsters immune to you and nova is amazingly safe considering how close you are to the enemy. It's not my cup of tea, though. I opined enough about my dislike of FO on INR_II, so I won't rehash it here, but I will say I don't think I'll be making any more sorcs using it.

As for nova: I was impressed. Well, not overly so since I'd given it some testing with my lightning sorc and liked it, so I knew what it was capable of (nova laughs at dolls, for instance), but there were still a few surprises.

First off, I expected to still be getting hit an awful lot with Nova, which would proc the tele on the occy and just cause all kinds of headaches, but that wasn't the case. Rarely did I take any kind of damage when using nova, because the enemy almost invariably instantly went into hit recovery and from there was at my mercy.

Even more than the ctc tele on the occy (say it quickly and it sorta sounds like teriyaki...), I was concerned about nova's mana consumption. Level 32 nova eats up 46 mana (I think, might be 47 or 48) per cast - with no casting delay - and that adds up in a hurry at the 105 FCR BP. Most of the other players using this build had Call to Arms or a Stone of Jordan, and some lucky devils had both (*grumbles about crazy rich moderators with imba beta CtA's and nearly full grails* ;p) while I possess neither of these prizes. Thankfully, Frostburns, aided by liberal use of static, shored up the problem adequately, though I still have to down a pot if I have to spam for any length of time. A point in warmth would help, but imo it's not worth hurting offensive power to put a point there until the build is complete ... at which point it's not really going to be needed.

Lastly, and this is something I haven't seen mentioned at all, I expected to be constantly taking frost novas off of the CI's that I would be killing. Strangely, because of the way nova's damage is done you almost always have time to teleport out of range. Took a couple of times for me to get the hang of it, but I haven't taken a frost nova blast since about Act II with this char.

Future:

Hers is retirement. Maybe I'll return to her later, but I don't really want to do any more runs with her, so I'm not going to. No fault of the characters - she could run Baal quite well, but I dislike FO fairly strongly for the task.

Mine involves making another sorc, to snag another pair of HF runes and test out another tandem of skills, shortly.

I would advise anyone to make one of these builds, despite my personal gripes, since it is quite powerful and an interesting pairing of a long range skill with an up close and personal one, but I'll echo sirpoopsalot's statement that it's going to be a rough go without gear comparable to full tal's set. Not impossible, by any means, just tough. Getting nova up to the point where it puts the enemy in hit recovery is key, and things go downhill drastically if you can't accomplish that. I'll also add in that I wouldn't want to use this build with less than 105 FCR, for better/quicker positioning and it makes keeping those baddies in hit recovery much easier.

After building Frova, a Frozen Orb/Nova sorceress, I was somewhat underwhelmed because of my distaste for Frozen Orb, but Nova had certainly acquitted itself well and I felt it deserved another go. Blizzard is one of my favorite skills and one I'm well acquainted with (taking two chars to 90+ with a skill will get you familiar with it), so it was an easy pick. This is where I think I made a mistake. When I switched to caster gear at 29, I dumped my saved points into Ice Blast to synergize Blizz, like I would with a blizz sorc. In hindsight, that wasn't such a great idea. If I did it over, I'd put maybe 10 points in there at that point, then focus on Blizzard, LM, Nova, getting CM to 17 after + skills, then finish Ice Blast (or Glacial Spike, if you're into maxing that instead, but I wouldn't advise it for Baal), in that order. I don't like upping Nova too early because you won't likely be geared to handle the higher mana cost at that point, and you don't really need the big damage from it until late NM, and the progression I suggest here ought to kick in just as you need it.

I'm not completely sure on what the best course of action is, but at the moment I'm planning on getting CM to 100% after +skills and then pumping synergies since at that point anything not CI will be in the negatives and the +5% from synergies should provide more damage than the -5% from CM. I dont' really see why this would not be so, but if I'm wrong, please let me know.

Was a little disappointed in the Forges. After getting minimum in NM I was really hoping for at least a Pul in Hell, but oh well.

As for the rest, I'm quite pleased with the haul considering she teleported through most of the game.

Play:

Normal: Envy hat + jeweled sword got me to Sigon's, Sigon's got me to 1.09 Ravenclaw and Iratha's. I don't like full Sigon's, so I still have some tweaking to do with my low low level twinking. Ravenclaw + Iratha's with Twitchthroe and Treads is pretty GG, though. Got me to 29 when I turned caster and put on spirit sword, peasant crown, eye of etlitch, Skin of the Vipermagi, visceratuant, nightsmoke, nat's boots, chancies and 2 rare rings.

Ran Baal until 50 before moving to Nightmare.

Put points in utility and required skills as they became available, put a point in Blizz at 24 to kill Duriel. Dumped saved points in Ice Blast at 28 or 29 (see the "Skills" section to see why I think that was a mistake)and maxed it from there, then used Tyrael's quest reward to get CM and LM. From there I maxed Blizz and started on LM.

NM: Teleported through til Act V. Shael was a big disappointment at the Forge. Ran Eldritch til 58. Leveled to 76 (for Griffon's) in Baal runs before entering Hell. A witch in the Throne was kind enough to drop my second AoKL during those runs, which was cool. p8 was fine for everything except Baal, who I took at p5.

Hell: Let's just say Blova earned her frequent re-materializer card. Cleared the Mausoleum (found Graveyard instead of Stony Field, so I figured what the heck), AT, and RoF with her, with no noteworthy finds. Only really tough patch was saving Anya: area had CI Vipers, charging undead, and caster skellies.

Blind teleported almost on top of a pack of fanatacism vipers, but was able to cast a blizz and duck behind a wall. I stepped over to pick up whatever was dropped and saw that there was an evil urn there. We all know better than to open evil urns with a caster when we're standing right beside them, right? Apparently not dumb-dumb me. Bosspack of ES Vipers spawns right on top of me and a charge takes off half my life. Luckily, the occy saved me, and I picked off the minions and the merc took down the LE boss.

Then, 2 teleports later we were on top of another viper bosspack, this time CE/cursed. I went into super nova (heh) spam mode and took down the boss, getting cursed at the same time, and almost immediately took a viper charge that dropped my life by about 3/4ths ... really scary part being I was only at about 3/4ths my hitpoints before he hit me. Quick rejuv and we teleported to Anya, where I greeted Frozenstein with a bevy of novas and he repaid my kindness by dying at my feet. Yetis have such horrible manners.

Nothing else really proved a problem. Took the ancients down without any re-rolls. Not even 100% sure of the mods - I remember Stone Skin, Magic Resistant, and Blessed Aim and assume the rest were similarly innocuous since they went down without much of a fight. WSK gave me favorable rolls, and the Throne was a joke (Balrogs, Vipers [non-CI] and Blood Lords). Waves went down in short order, with no issues. Well, the merc died to the combination of poison + stacked hydras, but there were no issues for the sorc. Lister spawned FI/CI, so he took a little extra time and care as nova doesn't pack the punch to put him in hit recovery.

Thoughts:

Succinctly: This char rocks. She covers the aspects of FO that I found lacking while not forsaking the good aspects the other build provided (well, of course there's some tradeoff, but it's small enough that I can live with it), so, in my estimation, she's a supreme success.

Having said that, I don't think this is a build for everybody. First of all, if you're not fairly wealthy in D2 terms this build will give headaches. Underpowered FO is not really that big of a deal; it's a pretty solid killer even with few +skills. Blizzard and Nova, on the other hand, demand +skills. FO/Nova can work out alright as an underpowered build because FO doesn't really require them and it's the main skill involved, but Blizzard/Nova doesn't have that to fallback on. I'm sure somebody will make an untwinked Blizz/Nova sorc at some point, and I'm not saying it can't be done, merely that it will be really underpowered - in other words, it would get frustrating for me. Plus, the only interest for me in this build is as a Baal runner and, to do that effectively, a good bit of power is required. In short, unless you dislike FO I would suggest you go with the FO/Nova build.

I did Normal and NM at p8 (yes, I teleported through at p8, didn't really figure it would make much difference...I was right), except for NM Baal who I ran at p5 (p8 for the Waves), moving to p1 for Hell. And at p1 she's a killing machine. Kill speed diminishes quickly at higher settings, though.

I took on all the Act Bosses at p3, and only Baal took what I would consider a long time to kill. I knew Blizzard was pretty poor at killing Baal coming in, though, having a Blizz sorc that runs him.

I didn't die at all with this character. I took things a little more carefully than I normally would in Act V because of that (incredibly irritating to get that far only to die to something stupid), but I'm pretty proud of that accomplishment, considering she was teleporting through the majority of the game under-leveled.

Addendum:

I've now done 10+ runs after making her a mat, and I have to say I'm quite pleased. Timing them with the comp's clock, most of the runs took 5 minutes, one took 6 minutes, and 3 took 4 minutes (the last 3). That's without killing anything (or only one bosspack) in the actual WSK, but I was mostly concerned with how quickly she could kill the waves and Baal, at this point. As you would expect, Blizzard tears through the waves in next to no time (actually not too far off from my lightning sorcs times), but can't compete with FO when it comes to Baal. It's taking the better part of a minute to take down Baal with her, but I make that up on the waves, so I'm not really sweating it.

Of course, on the first run after matting her, she died. To Baal. Oh, the embarassment. Then she died again on run 5. The throne was packed with ~12 gloams plus mummies. I teleported onto a mummy and pegged him with an ice blast, but attracted attention from a group of gloams just off screen. The occy saved her from a concentrated pack of gloam lightning, teleporting her into ... another concentrated pack of gloam lightning. Oh well, live by the occy, die by the occy, eh?

How does she do on the dreaded 2nd wave. you ask? Splendidly. I stand on top of Baal and start laying down blizzards while Baal is laughing, normally having 3 going when they spawn, then I static away and drop another blizz on top of the mummies, normally killing most or all of them. At that point I teleport into the middle of the skellies and 9 times out of 10 (literally, so far) manage to take all of them down at the same time. Only problems are getting hit right as they spawn and having the occy jump me out of place and getting poisoned and not being able to kill all of them off quickly enough to be safe (getting poisoned means having to throw up a TP, but it doesn't happen often).

Future:

She'll definitely be handling my Baal running for awhile, since she's just about as fast as my pure lightning sorc, but packs almost twice the MF. However, the MFO is nearly upon us and I still need to work on optimizing Blizzy's run times, so I may not be doing much Baal running for awhile.

As for other D2 projects, I've got a level 91 poisonmancer I should press on to Patriarch and an IK barb in Act V Hell who I should finish up as well, but I think my next char will most likely be a new WW barb, either swinging my eth Hone Sundan or the upped Ribcracker.

I'd like to thank sirpoopsalot and his triple mat thread for sparking the interest in FO/Nova builds and Bobthewarrior for his writeup about his Blizz/Nova build. This is certainly the most engaging and enjoyable Baal runner I currently have, and I may not have come across her if not for you guys.

Then I had a fire act 3 merc. He sucked in hell, so I got a new baba. He was kind of good, before I upgraded too 1.09. now I have a hell defensive act 2 merc. He uses : tal mask, haemous armor, eth grims burning dead.

She made matriach during the same MP game as Aitrus recent Mat (think Naab had one too on the same run). I played everything solo until I got to Act 5 Hell. The burning dead archers were tearing me to ribbons and multiple deaths meant I had run out of money to revive my Merc.

She was built to be a dedicated countess runner, which she manages fairly well. A few more levels would help to pump up the lightning. I maxed Orb first and then put the 10 points into cold mastery. In retrospect I should have put 1 into mastery then pumped lightning a bit more, as her lightning attack was a bit weak in early hell. It's doing OK damage now though.

Her resistances were really bad in hell, hence the laying of hands and Nat's boots to pump them up a bit. I am not very lucks at finding resistance charms and those I did have were stripped off for another character whose needs were greater. Lightning I managed to get to 85 to take advantage of the T-Gods. Others were between -5 and 30 I think. A supply of antidotes on hand for the poison was helpful.

This is a build that loves tight spaces. Orb and CL are both great for shooting through doorways etc. Open areas like the bloody foothills are more of a problem without any area of effect spells. I kept my two main attacks on the left mouse button and teleport always on the right. Position, blast repeat. It made for a different paced game than when using a meteorb or blizzard sorc and taught me a lot about how to position my merc.

Overall good fun to play. After playing a Blizzsorc for quite a while it was nice to be able to take on anything, no matter what the immunities. Not so much power, but more versatility.

Funny story about the name, I checked the Mat/Pat thread to see if anyone had done this build before and to find out the gear/experiences and whatnot, and I found only two who had done it. After making her and checking the thread again later, I notice one more I missed - someone else had the same bright idea and named their's Supernova. Oh well, she'll just have to be a copycat then, I already grew attached to the name so I've left it as is.

I got the idea for this char from just messing around. One night required that I stay up untill 3am, so I needed something to do, and so made a Sorc. Once again I decided to just go for early game power since I wasn't planning on taking her to Hell and back. I found that Frost Nova worked pretty effectively if you get a +3 staff early on and boost it, and was having a lot of fun, so I wondered if I could do this all the way. I ended up scrapping the character however, since I wasted half my stat points into energy and some skill points into Firebolt, so I started over and picked a fairly unoriginal name and set off.

It was a lot of fun. Frost Nova kicks *** early game, and then Nova is even better, get a +3 staff of either and it'll take 1-2 casts to clear everything, and for a lot of the game, it'll stay that way, making you pretty powerful. Counterintuitively, she's actually pretty safe, Nova casts fast and hits a wide area, so you can keep the button down and keep everything around you in stun-lock if you get some FCR. If you're more daring and crazy, you can safely teleport into most large packs and waste them with some Novas before they can even get a chance to attack. Frost Nova however, was a bit of a disappointment. The damage was severely lacking by the time I was encountering Lightning Immune. I couldn't rely on it to stun-lock like Nova could, which added more problems. I think that for Frost Nova to be effective, you're going to need some pretty uber gear, something like Nightwing's for a start, and a lot of skills (+skills or points into synergies) before the damage would start to get respectable.

By the time I reached Hell though, this had all changed. One of the Nova sorc's biggest problems is high HP enemies, and a lot of monsters in Hell could stand up to a lot of Novas before going down. Some of them were too tough to be stun-locked, and anything Lightning Immune was a nightmare because Frost Nova's damage was pathetic. It fell to my Merc to take care of most of the LI's in the game, so you'll want a good strong merc for this char. Act bosses were some of the worst, I had to practically shove potions down my merc's throat every second to keep him alive since Nova's damage just wouldn't cut it. Some CB on the Merc would be a good idea too. As Hell dragged on I was having less and less fun and things started to become slow and frustrating, by the end I was skipping packs of LI's and teleporting quickly through most areas, ignoring most side-dungeons. After blasting through Normal and Nightmare, Hell was a bit of a downer.

One more thing about Nova is the atrocious mana consumption. By the end of the game I was casting Nova's that cost 43 mana a pop at 8 FPA which is just over 3 per second, so thats 129 mana per second being used every *second*. Insight is a *must*, and so is a decent sized mana pool. Even before you get insight you'll be drinking blues like nothing. Once you get a fat pool and the Insight, you should be fine, you'll be able to cast Novas and most things will die before your mana pool is drained. Extended battles may take a mana pot or two, but so long as your Merc is alive you should be alright.

As for deaths, there were about 5. First was to a FE Scararb in NM, thanks to the invisible corpse explosions that go off when you stun a LEFE monster. I was noticing that all night, but that one finally caught me off guard and killed me. Next was a FECE Spider in NM, double death explosion. Ka-blam! Splat. AAAAGH! The third time was to Hell Talic's WW, I don't know what mods he had since I just rerolled them. Then in WSK2, Gloams struck. I was blind teleporting since I couldn't kill them and theyr hurt too much. I landed between two packs and was fried. Even with 8 FPA casting, blind teleporting can be dangerous. The final death was trying to recover my body from that, which was stupid since I had no chance naked if I died to quickly with gear. 3 deaths attributable to bugs, 1 to stupidity, and 1 to a bad ancient spawn. Not too bad for such a risky in-your-face kind of character, I guess.

Moving on to something else, items. Useful things I found were:
Snowclash - I wanted one of these for a character I'm planning. The ctc blizzard also had great timing here.
Gore Riders!!! - I've wanted these for so long. They'll be sure to put a kick into my melee characters (get it? kick? bwahaha)
Pul rune, and Gul rune
Arm of King Leoric - Found this from an Evil Urn spawn in Hell Ancient's Way. Score.

And finally, heres a little story. I finally made it to the Throne and was ready to get this over with. I took down Baal's minions without too much trouble, and went on to kill him. Things weren't going too good, I was running out of potions and then my Merc died. It was then I realised I was out of TPs, and nearly out of potions, and there was only one way out - his death or mine.

Bugger.

I had a few full revujs and greater healings, but with no Insight it was hopeless. He'd just drain my mana, and if he didn't, I would. It was hopeless, but I was adamant not to give up and die again, so I just save and exited. I'd rather take on all his minions again than let that bastard kill me, so I did. Second time around, it took plenty of potions and several town trips, but I killed him. Hurrah.

Before I do the stats, doesn't this look like a cool pose? I can just image her hitting the ground and seeing a massive electrical shockwave fly ahead, wiping out poor Azrael. Something like that anyway.

She's my take on the most efficient baalrunning sorc.
I tried the pure blizzard sorc and the blizzballer, neither could, efficiently, clear everything on /players 8. The best of the 2 is in my oppinion the pure blizzer with helhel bonehew on switch. The catch is, wave 2 had to be done on /p1, /p3 at most.
I wanted to go /p8 all the way (/p3 baal though), this one can do that.
At 3 min. 45 sec. pr. run, including loading, buying, selling, repairing and muling. As blizzard gets better this, of course will get lower. I might be able to shave of ~20 seconds or so just by getting a better WSK map (it's a 22-25 second tele now) and doing throne on /p1 or even just leave it on /p3 from the previous baalkill.

The blizzard part should come as no surprise, it's quite simply one of, if not the most efficient skill(s) in the game.

I chose to go with CL/L as secondary attack to use against the second wave's skeletons because of two things:

1. Chain lightning does an enormous amount of damage pr. cast - even when not fully synergized. It does so because of the many hits it'll land. 4 or 5 CLs (with 4 or 5 Lightnings to clean up the last one or two skellies) is enough to kill all the skeletons.

2. I had a Griffon's eye and wanted to put that sweet sweet -24% to enemy lightning resist to good use. :)

Originally I planned to have 3 or 4 sparking GCs, I just didn't have more than one. It turned out to be no problem with just the one. For this reason, the rest of my skillpoints will be spent making blizzard stronger.

I only have 1 problem with this girl - Mana, CL/L just drain my bulb in no time. It's not a huge problem mind you, a few blues is all I need.

Any comments, suggestions, things I forgot (most likely, a LOT)? Hit me.

Hi all!


Intro and some considerations

I was the lucky recipient from frozzzen's (PvP blizzard/ES sorceress Gear) give-away.

I decided to start a new char instead of just re-spec a sorc and so there were two things I decided for this char, not using re-spec (and make her play PvM in her PvP plan) and play it untwinked till each item frozzzen sent me could be used. Don't now if that's a real untwinking since some items could be used at 20+... :p

So there was born Geada (meaning Frost, Renewed Frost in portuguese). Not that much to say about her, I followed the skill, stat and gear set advised by frozzzen.

I just used Ice Blast and then Blizzard. A lot of low damage Lightning and CL when helping the merc killing a CI that really needed to be killed. The lack of Static Field was noticeable and I was too lazy to gamble for a good staff with it. Not having points in Warmth also made her even more pots hungry.

She was played always at /p1, I wanted to be able to play the most relaxed way possible and be able to play with a more offensive style with lower risks. With sorcs I also prefer killing faster and do several passes. (Well the truth is that I just thought that I would die a lot... more. I'm not that used to ES sorcs and didn't want to die more frequently, respect for those who play a char like this in HC!!!)

At level 29, both Stone of Jordan and Frostburn turned her into a much more enjoyable to play character. Spirit Monarch gave the next great jump. At level 89 she could finally have the final gear complete. The charms were life savers.

As soon as I entered act2 normal I traded the rogue for another merc so I could use it like a more efficient bait, ranged attacks killed me sometimes in act1. In NM I got my final merc, the traditional one.

After Mat'ing her Baal and Cow Runs till getting lvl 90.

Right now I'm not remembering more stuff to say. I died a lot, lost count of it... But it was a great char to play nevertheless and while the gear was getting better and the char getting more powerful I enjoyed her even more.


PvP

I loved playing her in PvP! I really need more practice and should have read the guide frozzzen kindly sent more than that first time when I received the gear :p

I'll definitely try PvP again and making more chars for it.

She was born when I saw someone praising a Blizzard-Lightning sorc somewhere. Ofc their sorc had Uber gear(doesn't everyone around here?).

Overall, she was quite fun to play, if lacking pwn-ingness, due to my sub-best equipment. I did countess, mephisto(not more than on p3 though), andariel, and LK runs with her before getting her through hell.

I got the impression that Blizzard is a much safer skill then Orb. You can just drop it and run for cover. Which I did quite abit since her resistances were all negative, except lightning, which was 12. Glad no gloams spawned in the WSK...:whistling:

I'm not really sure what else I need to say here, so if you see something important missing, let me know :)

Final Review (and comparison):
I have to say though, despite the attempt, there were a myriad of reasons that I preferred my previous attempt with Nova (or was it a plethora of reasons :p). Oh well.

Before I get to the b*tchlist, on the positive side, the switch to Frozen Orb and max-block really provided a nice improvement to surviveability. The only death I had was when I was 'trying to be too cute' and let my Prayer merc heal me. Of course, I didn't drink a potion for about 3 seconds before a stray hit or two killed me. Shame on me. :duh:

Mana burn still wasn't a real problem (I could teleport away easily enough), but the lower mana pool did mean that I didn't regenerate mana quite fast enough to start spamming immediately afterwards (i.e. a little slow for my tastes). I did like the look of wielding a phase blade instead of an orb.


As for the things I didn't like as much this time around:

- Block-lock sucks. Last time I was very aggressive and teleported directly on top of most enemies. This time, often when I tried that I immediately went into block-animation (the FBR on Sanctuary probably helped a little, but the whole thing was still frustrating when it happened - and it did, often). Overall, that meant I had to actually plan my attack most times, instead of attacking then reacting to monsters/danger like last time. I suspect the FHR I had on Spirit last time (and didn't have much of this time) also factored into this opinion too.

- Last time I had nice resists from WizardSpike, so this time I was scrounging up a bunch of charms to make max - which meant my mana was a lot lower (even with BO). Likewise, my other equipment last time around provided a fair bit of mana boosts, but didn't this time. Basically for Act4 and 5, any battle against 2-3 monsters would completely deplete my mana reserve if I tried to use Nova. Hence all of the points I spent in Warmth.

- 8-frame Nova might only be ~15% slower, but 7-frame is 28438% more enjoyable. Seriously. If you've never built a 200 FCR-spammer sorc, you should.

- The Firewall/200 FCR/extra mana last time really supported a continuous and hectic (and fun) playstyle. This time, the chilling/slowing from FO was so 'nice', block-lock was so frustrating, and my mana supply was so easily depleted that I'd say it was more of a FO sorc for the last three acts.

- I thought the additional -35% ELR from Cresent Moon would be quite noticeable, but after Act2 Hell, it really wasn't. It did kick butt in Act1 though - 1&2 hit killing an entire crowd at 8-frames is pretty darn fun, but quite a few monsters still didn't get put into hit-recovery by my Nova (which is what I was hoping for).


Overall, this Nova variant is a very viable build, and probably much more sensible overall, but I think I struck gold the first time - Rita was significantly more fun. And since fun >>>>> everything else combined, I think Sura will go into the retirement bin and I'll pull Rita out when I feel like spamming some pretty circles.

Gameplay/Thoughts
The idea with the build was to hop in the middle of a bunch of bad guys and spam nova (either frost or lightning) until everything was dead. Since I wanted to go 200% FCR and chose to use a spirit shield to get there, a max block build was not an option. So to compensate for that, I used a combination of holy freeze merc, frozen armor, and massive FHR (spirit and charms get me to the 86% FHR breakpoint). If I got hit before I could spam novas (which happens occasionally when you teleport into the middle of really fast mobs), the frozen armor froze monsters just long enough for me to recover from the hit and begin spamming novas and lock the monsters into hit recovery. Once that happened it was gg. Basically, this build takes the motto "the best defense is a good offense" to the extreme. No point in being timid.

I maxed nova first, followed by lightning mastery and was glad I did. Frost Nova just doesn't have the same killing power for the same number of skillpoints. If I were to level more and finish maxing blizzard for the synergy bonus, it would probably get a lot better as indicated by other mat threads. The authors of the other frost nova mat threads were quite satisfied by frost nova's damage, but for me I only used frost nova on the LIs. More points in cold mastery would also make a big difference, but there is room for improvement in my gear (my amulet has no skills and I would swap lit skillers for cold skillers if I had them) so I didn't want to spend more skill points there knowing I could possibly improve to level 17 without spending them.

Levelling at normal Baal was a blast. 4 or 5 static fields followed by one nova wiped out everything. Watching entire waves fall at once was addictive. It was at that point I realized how much better the range on nova was than I thought. Even when the waves spread out, nova was usually able to reach all of them.

I spent a fair amount of time levelling in the pits so that I could wear griffon's eye during questing for the rest of hell. I had chosen to max frozen orb for the frost nova synergy bonus before working on blizzard and was glad I did. The only LIs in the pits are the archers and frozen orb worked great on them. They hurt real bad and were usually shooting me from a distance while I was working over a group of non-LIs. Having a good frozen orb allowed me to launch a couple in their direction without having to move. Blizzard would have also worked, but my main goal was usually to take out the boss of the pack (as they seem to spawn might/cursed a lot), and in that case frozen orb works much better. This character actually ended up being my best pit runner, speed-wise. Overall, I really enjoyed running the pits so much with this character (albeit using orb rather than the frost nova the character was meant to use), that I am going to make a dedicated pit runner that is max block (leaving me to settle for 105%FCR) with maxed frozen orb and synergy instead of frost nova.

105% FCR was a lot of fun and definitely recommended for a minimum, but OMGZ was 200% FCR fun. I could have gotten 3-5 or more +to skills if I hadn't gone for 200% FCR, but it would not have been worth it. 200 owns the monsters, plus teleporting around at that speed is a ridiculously fast way to quest.

810 mana and Insight were not enough to keep the blue bulb full (especially at 200 FCR). The +8 mana after kill (+5 from silkweaves and +3 from jewel in wizardspike) helped alot, but even still I had to drink blue pots occasionally. This build would probably not be much fun if you didn't have a merc with insight.

Finds: Windforce (6%) while levelling in the pits.

Hellforges: Lem and Fal

Overall, this character was amazingly fun and fit my aggressive playstyle quite well, however I was not overly impressed with frost nova's damage and don't feel like levelling this character up to see how it does fully synergized. I would rather spend the time building my new nova/orber that I know will own in the pits. At least that way I will finally have an mfer that can almost (like 10 seconds a run slower) compete with my blizzy's speed in the AT, so I can finally give the AT a little break.

Started as a pure blizzard build for Normal and Nightmare questing, then rushed Act I, II, III Hell w/o finishing any quests except rescuing Cain to start running Meph asap. Would have finished Den Of Evil and Radament for the skill points bonus but my merc was way too weak for hell. Normal and NM was played on /p8 setting, and hell on p1 all the way. Started running Meph around ~67lvl to ~80 with a few Ancient Tunnels runs and few NM Cows.

Normal was... hell? lol. At least untill I got level 24 I was chugging blues nonstop, but aside from that it was easy. Started with 3x ctopaz ring mail and 2x ctopaz cap but the mana was just killing me and I was too stubborn to put points into enetgy so finally ended up with 2x sapphire helm, mana rings and amu and some mana charms.

Somewhere in early nightmare I found 2os Ghost Armor, made Stealth in it. As you can see I'm still proudly wearing it since Meph is being a total *******. Not a single useful armor drop after roughly ~2k runs. Also found a 4os broad sword which became a Spirit soon after. Nightmare Meph was kind to drop a Oculus and some other nice items so I can continue my journey to Hell Meph :)

Well not a single death so far... But Hell came... And for a -50 all resists, less than 63bp fcr and about ~500hp rushing to act 3 sorc... Act I went pretty smooth, killed Andy 5-10 times after the Quest, but was way too time consuming and she didn't drop anything so I continued to Act II. In Maggot's Lair there where a lot of NDE's but somehow I managed to take the staff w/o dying. Claw Viper temple tho was a different story. Died about 5 times till I finally got my hands on the amulet. Palace and Arcane Sanctuary went pretty well, not even one NDE. Died once or twice in Tall Rasha's Tomb tho.

Act III was.. hard. Luckily I found the Spider Cavern pretty fast. One or two deaths until I found the Flayer Dungeon, GOD I HATE THOSE LITTLE... So far so good tho, finally found it. But next to the chest with Khalim's what-ever-there-was-there where one or two boss packs - extra fast, cold immune. Took me roughly 30 minutes and 4 or 5 deaths until I got the what-ever-there-was-there.

From that point everything went as smooth as possible. Got to Travincal, killed the counsils, only Toorc Icefist left and bugged somehow idk but my merc finished him off. He literally just stood there for ~2 minutes not doing anything.

And... FINALLY! Mephisto, here I come :). I don't know how many runs I've done but leveling from 67 to 80 with maybe 1 or 2 levelup's in AT and NM Cows (around 10-15 runs done each) it's quite a bit.

He 'equiped' probably 10 characters but didn't drop a Harlequin's Crest or any decent armor.

I had a pretty nice map and at the final run I accidentally pressed Nightmare instead of Hell. I knew I had to make her a Mat so I decided it's time to do so. Went back to Act I, respeced to FO/CL and went after Diablo.

Act IV was a breeze, since I managed go get my resists up to 50-60-70. Not a single dead.
Act V was also pretty easy. Only 1 death at the Frozen River. A Gloam, a Siren and a Rot Warrior all hit me at the same time - 1 hit=death.

Ancients wasn't that big of a problem. Restarted 2 or 3 times due to my merc dying or me not having enough potions. At the final try he died again in the very beginning so I didn't bother to revive him AGAIN. Basically I was running around in circles and trowing frozen orbs to Talic and Madawc which were not CI's. After about 5 minutes of that they finally died.
With Korlic tho, I had on 1 Health potion 1 Mana Potion and 1 Full Rejuv left. He was CI and jumping like crazy so only Few of the Lightnings did hit him. A lot of chasing and running but he ended up dead too :)

Minions where easy. Orb, CL, Orb, CL... bodies. Bartuc killed my merc a couple of times but no big deal. Lister spawned extra fast so I had to kill 1-2 at a time, luring them from the others didn't took much time tho.

Although Baal cloned him self 3 times because I didn't have enough damage to kill him fast he was easy too. After the last merc revive I had only around 60k gold so that was a concern. He died when Baal was at a silver of HP and 5-6 lightnings after that http://i45.tinypic.com/2mcvc3s.jpg.

Maybe some kind of pally (frost/tesladin or hammerdin dunno)

I also have a level 39 bone necro parked in act 1 nightmare also untwinked. I might try to play him out this way as well.
Any suggestions?
