I finally have accomplished the goal. An untwinked guardian playing vanilla D2. Considering I've been playing since D2 came out 5 years ago, it's about friggin' time.

First a little backstory. I started my Guardian quest in ernest in 1.09. I got 2 sorceresses to nm nihlathak. He punked them both. I also participated in a Kasferatu no vitality tournament with a Paladin. I got him to half through act 2 in hell. He didn't die, my comp crashed like a crazy monkey and he was lost. I've also had a lot of other HC characters that I bored of or didn't make it out of normal.

She had 2 near deaths, one was the ancient tunnels from a FE embalmed minion. They are nasty! The other was an exploding doll in act 3. Act 3 was definetly the most painful act. The ancients were fairly easy no rerolls, first time only 1 CI (Korlic) who was also the only FE. The other mods will moderatly dangerous were doable. Baal drop was crap. Hellforge was a Gul. Nightmare hellforge was an Um. She found another Um in the jail in act of hell. She found the Nightwing's veil on an anceints tunnel run. I also picked up an ondal's almighty and an SS.

Next up for me HC wise is either my poison necro or my bow/venom assy. As for this character, to the Tunnels. She has a lot of long hours ahead of her. :)

It's been a while since I finished the game the last time, and this is the first time I did it in Hardcore. I am quite pleased all in all, even though (or maybe because) this was the most nervewracking and terrifying experience I've ever gone through playing a computer game. :)

I chose to try this with a Blizzard sorceress, because I figured it would be useful to have one for MF, and more importantly, because I had never played one and I was excited to try. I had also read that she would be able to perform well in less than stellar gear, which was obviously an important consideration given that I started completely from scratch with her. My old characters and stashes are backed up "somewhere", but my collection of HC items was very small, as I had never gotten too far in HC before, so it didn't really matter.

Normal: The beginning was the usual, beating fallen upside the head with my staff because I never had mana. I put one point in ice bolt to get in the cold theme immediately. Ice blast was next and became my main attack until Blizzard. Blizzard was fun but I was out of mana all the freaking time, but it got better when I started downing blues with reckless abaddon. Really, not much to report from Normal. Standard.

Nightmare: In early Act I, I found a 4os crystal sword, so I decided to run the Countess for a while to see if I could get an Amn for 'Spirit'. It didn't take long at all and the new weapon was extremely helpful, +skills etc etc but to be honest the biggest relief was +100 to mana bulb. I _think_ I found Tarnhelm from Barracks/Jail/Catacombs. Which was nice.

In Act II (I believe) a 4os Partizan dropped, so my merc got a new beating stick: 'Insight'. Game over, Nightmare. Btw, I briefly hired a holy freeze merc, but decided I liked my old friend (normal-combat) better, so I went back and re-hired. I also made 'Rhyme' in a bone shield at some point, might have actually even been back in Normal. I don't know. (I should write this stuff down, heh.)

In Nightmare I was the king of the world. Screenfuls of p8 monsters just stopped living with a click of a mouse. It was awesome. Blizzard is very strong, in case you didn't know.

I stopped to run Mephisto for some time. I'm not sure exactly how much MF I had at that point, around 300 I suppose. 4 Ptopaz gothic plate, Tarnhelm, etc. I got a lot of nice items from him, including my first EVER Stone of Jordan that I actually reported in the ITF after it happened. 👍

The rest of Nightmare was largely uneventful. Toughest spot was rescuing Anya, with cold immune witches flying about and causing all sorts of headaches and particularly headaches for poor Razan who had to kill them without any help at all (bar some symbolic telekinesis). Ancients were easy as in Normal.

Starting out, I was decently equipped thanks to Mephisto's generosity. I had no maxed resists but all apart from poison were at reasonable levels. I also had some +skills so all in all all was all good.

I ran into my first Cold Immunes right at Blood Moor, I believe. Them zombies or whatnots. Not a big deal, they're slow and easily dispatched by Razan if necessary. Corpsefire and his pack were of this sort and after separating the pack they were handled well enough.

Then the cold immunes started rolling in... Brutes, fast running rogues. Some of the goatmen. Nothing a serious threat but at this point I started teleporting and skipping stuff much much more than I normally do. I did finish off Countess however and was rewarded a Ral for my troubles.

The rest of the game can be summed up with two words: Tears and Teleport. I had been through Hell a number of times before, but I had NO idea whatsoever how many cold immunes there are there. I guess the real horror began at Claw Viper Temple or so. I just closed my eyes (ok, I didn't) and teleported through the most of it. Act III was similar a type of Flayer was Cold Immune, as were all the Threshers (or whatevers).

I just teleported on and wanted to go home. I had to take breaks after short sessions because I was so stressed. Eventually I made it to Mephisto, who himself was quite easy despite vaporizing my merc. I ran him for a time using the moat trick, and got some goodies, such as several golden Shakos. Which was nice.

Act IV wasn't too bad, in fact it was easy. As long as majority of the monsters aren't CI, Blizzard owns in Hell just like it did through NM. Hellforge drop was a Pul.

Oblivion Knights were some trouble due to being Cold immune, but otherwise Chaos Sanctuary and the Seal bosses were all relatively easy. Diablo ate my merc but died fairly quickly to blizzards even though it was very scary and I almost died to one of his fire attacks once.

I skipped vast majority of Act V, which is actually what I normally do even when I can kill most of the monsters. I especially dislike the large outdoor areas. I did kill Shenk (well, Razan did), rescued the barbarian herds and rescued Anya, all done by teleporting and praying and wanting it to end. Frozen River was HELL. Masses of CI witches and those skeletons who refuse to stay down. I parked Frozenstein and rescued Anya and got the hell out of there. My nerves were in shreds.

Ancients took four rerolls I believe, I finally got two non-CI guys and the last one was CI FI Stoneskin but safe albeit slow for Razan to kill by himself. Like everything in Hell, it was a crazy teleport/separate show on the summit. I almost died a retarded death by mistyping and instead of casting Blizzard on two ancients I actually teleported right there between them. Smashsmash rejuvs and teleport and scream and cry and phew. That would've sucked. (I also did the same maneuver a number of times in earlier acts, inside a Thresher pack in Act III and right inside the named Council guy's pack inside Durance 3 were most memorable).

At this point I was actually almost out of Full rejuvs despite picking up 100% of purple potion drops throughout the entire game. I filled the last two rows on my belt with super heals as I entered WSK and hoped for the best.

Worldstone Keep was actually one of the easiest areas, many thanks to friendly monster rolls. Throne of Destruction had winged balrog type guys, non-CI, some type of frenzytaur, non-CI and then CI witches. It wasn't bad at all. Minions were all fairly uncomplicated, only things CI were stray skeletons and Lister. Speaking of Lister, it just wasn't going to happen. Razan just disappeared into thin air. I parked him by the stairs.

Baal annoyed me by eating my mana but that's the worst he could do. Here he is puking over the edge and here is the end result of this overwhelming journey.

Helm:
Griffon's Eye with a 5/5 lite facet for a total of +17% dmg and -24% enemy LR.

Armor:
1.07 Arkaine's Valor. Pretty much the item the entire build was made around. Looks awesome, crazy stats. Traded for it and wanted to use it on a char I would play a lot - since there are plenty of better options for MFers and almost anything but a sorc needs enigma, lite sorc was obvious. It adds around 700 life at lvl 90 and the +2 skills, FHR, FR and socket is just gravy. For now I put a ruby in the socket, as I'm waiting for either a nice jewel of freedom or another 5/5 facet to show up.

Weapon:
Heart of the Oak Flail. 39 all resistance is really needed. FCR, skills, etc.

Shield:
Spirit Monarch. I did consider trying a setup with Stormshield, but I really want the extra kill speed Spirit adds.

Switch:
6 BO Call to Arms and Spirit. Thanks to srrw and his hilarious luck for rolling the CtA.

Belt:
Arachnid Mesh.

Gloves:
Frostburn - using Trang's would let me use Dungo's instead of Arach, but the extra mana and skill from this setup is too nice.

Boots:
Eagle Shank. Res is needed, dex saves me a couple of points for HotO and the FHR pushed me over the 86% breakpoint. I like the name as well.

Amulet:
Mara's (24 to all resistances)

Ring 1:
Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band. Will eventually be switched to SoJ.

Ring 2:
Entropy Turn. Been looking for a chance to use this forever. Don't have SoJs or BKWBs to spare, so this gave me the chance.

Charms:
5 Sparking GCs (one of inertia, rest plain). Rest is a mix of mana/life/res.

Plenty of improvements to be made gear-wise. Jewel for Ark's, better amulet and especially better charms.

Merc:
Emilio, Holy Freeze.
Infinity Thresher and Vampire Gaze. Still switching armors around between glad bane, upped eth viper, shaftstop and stone. Don't know what I will end up on. I had some problems keeping him a live a couple of levels back - haven't tried soloing since.

Questing:
I quested through the entire game with pyro's FoHer. His pala was obviously a lolhipsterbuild, but conviction was awesome and he was able to tank more than me. I don't remember much else than cruising through pretty much everything. Easy, peasy and a lot of fun as always. We ran CS a bit to gain levels for A5 and then pretty much just started baaling together. More people joined in and we've had quite a lot of Baal MP action during the last couple of weeks which is awesome.

Now:
Still doing a lot of MP Baals. I imagine I will keep doing so until reaching 93 or 94. And maybe still keep going there, depending on how much I will like solo grinding. MP Baals are awesome fun and probably the thing I like most about MPing. XP is nice, drops are decent, and nice chance to chat when somebody teles and between the waves. I did try soloing, which except for merc dying all the time is awesome. This post by gripphon helped me a lot and is basically the strategy I'm using.

And finally, I decided to film a single MP run with srrw earlier this evening. Infinity+lite sorc+furyzon=OP. Pretty basic Baal run (except for my laptop not being able to run bandicam), with a very nice suprise from Baal in the end.

For everyone who doesn’t know already – this character was played in the Afterlife tournament hosted by Wolron. (Thanks for a great tournament, Wolron!). Although I didn’t guardian her in time, i.e. while the tournament still lasted, I decided to play here according to the tournament rules till the end. Basically, participants were only allowed to place 1 pt per level into vitality and strength each and up to 5 extra points in each one per defeated act boss. As skills were only allowed all of the Lightning skills, Warmth and Frozen Armor. Itemwise I could only use jewelry and charms without limitations, other items had to meet at least one of the following criterias:
- ethereal
- Any item with the word “Angel” (or “Angelic”), “Radiance” or “Rainbow” in its name.
- Class Specific Unique Items: The Oculus; Eschuta's Temper; Death's Fathom
- Tal Rasha’s Wrappings set items.
- The rune word torso armor, “Enlightenment”.

Another way of obtaining usable items were the bosses: I had to run each boss until he dropped a Set or Unique and was allowed to use that one from then on.

The HF combined with the upped Woestave saved my bum quite some time...but let’s start at the beginning from Act I Hell...

(Attention: This is going to be long-winded...)

With the item restrictions things were a bit dangerous all the time – my resists weren’t quite as high as I wanted them to be, my life pool was small and I constantly ran out of mana.

Most of the time I carefully teleported along the area borders, trying to avoid enemies while finding the WP and the next area. At the sight of LIs I usually quickly backed away and tried another route. I loaded up 65%FCR asap, and more than once was quickly teleporting over a pack of Extra Fast Extra Strong LIs the only means of progressing...
Andariel herself went down quickly and rewarded me with a Sigon’s Belt, which didn’t leave my belt slot until late Act 5 (hey! Finally a belt with 4 rows that I actually could use!:), and...Tal-Rasha’s Adjucation! What a find for an untwinked tournament!

OK, so Act II it was then. Lots of LIs again...I was carefully sidestepping them whenever possible, since the up’d Woestave’s damage wasn’t exactly sky-rocketing (15-102...).
The summoner scared the hell out of me with his GS (see cold resists above...), but 3 or 4 Lightnings took him down quickly.
The real bummer was Duriel – hell, even slowed by 50% my merc went down far too easy...I had to return to town around 17 times and resurrect him around 7 times. And what was the reward for fighting him 15 minutes? This. Not quite what I could have needed...

I better don’t say a word about Act III. Ever tried to get a pure lightning sorceress untwinked through a jungle full of LI Soul Killers? Terrific, I tell you. I somehow managed to survive them though and once I went to Kurast, things went better. The next encounter that almost drove me mad was the Council...half of them LI was almost more than I could bear. Once again my mercenary saved me with his combo of HF and Woestave – I just had to single out each and every council member. After that was done (took me about 3 hours...) it was Mephisto’s turn. Ignoring the first (LI) Council pack in Durance 3 I headed for Mephisto, relying on my merc to slow Mephisto down enough for me to finish him off. Except for the resurrections I had to do, everything went well, although “The Patriarch” wasn’t exactly the item I was looking for...

Act IV: I have to admit – wouldn’t it have been for the CS, this act would easily have been the easiest of all. I somehow managed to roll a River of Flame with not too many LIs so that I was able to take care of Hephasto. The HF reward could have been better though.
Then there began the long journey through the Chaos Sanctuary. Good thing: My merc didn’t die too often to IM (you remember the damage from the up’d Woestave? That’s why :-D )
Bad thing: All Storm Casters (yes, Grand Vizier, too) are LI. Doooh. Oh, and the Infector of Souls was LI (well, actually Lightning enchanted), too. After a few dozen Super Healing Potions and an hour of playing time I finally opened the last seal.
Bad thing: Forgot to boost my fire resistance. That was the first time Diablo’s firestorm was more dangerous than the Red Lightning Hose. Overall he was much more easier than Duriel – being slowed by almost 75% isn’t such a good thing I think. Or maybe it was the fact that he has the lowest Lightning resistance of the first 4 act bosses (50% - Andariel has 66%, Duriel and Mephisto each 75%). Anyways, I managed to place my merc on a spot where he wasn’t hit by the Lightning hose, and from then on it was easy going.
This again wasn’t the reward I was looking for though.

Tyrael then sent me to Harrogath, and Bloody Foothills were brilliant: No LI – quite the opposite. CL ripped through my foes without mercy, and Shenk didn’t last but a second.
I ignored most monsters in the next areas, and only in the Crystalline Passage did I start to clear my path. The Frozen Passage was a where I learned to aim CL/Lightning at non-immunes and teleport like mad to avoid the Blood Stars from those Succubi (LI again...).
But everything I lived through was nothing compared to what I found to almost be an act of impossibility: The Ancients with a single tree sorceress. Those, who have fought Hell Ancients untwinked single pass with a single tree sorceress probably know what I mean. It was hell. I almost gave up and wanted to quit the tournament. I don’t know how many times I rerolled the Ancients either intentionally (Cursed, Fanatiscm, Extra Fast Talic, LI Talic and/or Korlic, Stone Skin Madawc...) or because I was forced to do so (e.g. when my mercenary died while Madawc was still alive – how could I possibly have killed that always LI freak of an axe thrower on my own?
So I fought the Ancients 7 times and rerolled them...let me think...almost 100 times? And finally, after what must have been 1.500.000 invested in potions, Ahsab hit the final thrust on Madawc.
Bugged from what I just experienced I did what no HC player would advice: Teleport as quick as possible through an area. In this case through the WSK. Don’t ask me how I survived that – by pure chance and 65% FCR I think (though this is pretty slow – don’t try that at home, kids! ;-).
Fortunately, there weren’t any Gloams in the Throne Room and since none of the minion waves is LI I had an easy time down in Baals throne room. We all know what happened then: Baal got stuck in his actions thanks to the Woestave and only fired 4 cold cones in total, that never reached me (could have been bad with –3% Cold Resistance...). He just sat there and waited for me to throw Lightnings at him (8 Super Mana Potions). What a sissy.

The End? Not yet – I still had to clear the Cow Level in order to receive my 25 bonus points. So back to Act I, Wirt’s Leg equipped and on I went. The Cow King teased me with this drop I could have used the whole time...

So, thanks for reading everyone. One final conclusion:
Never again play a single tree sorceress untwinked through Hell.

Kataegis is guardian #22, and my last for a while because I'm back to work tomorrow and have a lot of reading that I want to do. Her name comes from a mutational signature which is often found in breast cancer patients, the word for which comes from the ancient Greek for 'thunderstorm', which is the pattern that the data shows on analysis. She is the first guardian to utilise Infinity, which I recently farmed, and will hopefully not be the last as I have an intended sept themed around Infinity.

She was so fun to play and of course, she carved through everything with ease. She is built to be safe as you can tell by her gear, and as I only have one light skiller I was able to put quite a few life charms in her inventory, still stack her resists, get max block and have light/fire absorb. She is a potential future Baal runner :)

Guardian Five mono lite/ES sorc

I recently deeded the amazon I was working on for my sept and didn't quite feel like creating a new char, so I finished up this sorc instead to feel good. She had been parked in A3 hell and ran meph, some LK, and the countess. I've acquired some semblance of wealth at this point thanks to this girl, and I'm quite happy with how she functions. For some reason I've once again lost the ability to/forgot how to imbed screenshots, so forgive the blandness.

I named her Five, because she was the 5th in a line of sorceresses with her descendants deceasing tragically.
The first died to hell countess, when I decided to try and improve my efficiency by teleporting on top of the countess and charged bolting rather than using lightning from a distance. This resulted in instant death from fire explosion even on p1 due to quite low health and mana.
The second died to some archer pack in the jail in normal difficulty, when I tried playing in windowed mode while watching esports on the same screen, which also had a quite intense glare due to the darned sunrise shining on it (need a lot of excuses to justify dieing in normal a1 :oops:)
The third died to NM council, when I was 100-0 due to fire explosion by the last council dude that I didn't respect enough. Mightve also still been cursed.
The fourth died to ??? I don't remember, and I mightve gotten the order of this list wrong. All of them were lightning/CB/telekenesis/1pt ES, but Five was the first to have max block in addition to decent hp and mana pools.

Five had more success since I played with a bit more respect when farming, but several areas in hell ended up with me just teleporting blindly since lightning immunes were too much of a hassle to kill. Had to reroll chaos sanctuary since Grand Vizier spawned LI/PI, and I rerolled ancients since madawc spawned stoneskin on top of his LI which made my hireling tickle him. Hireling also died another attempt. Finally I just put a spellsteal on my weapon switch to use on madawc to help my hireling kill him. I got black souls on one of the levels and in the throne room (LI, physical resist, mana burn is extra dangerous for this char) but I played it safe in the throne room and drew them out a few at a time. None of baals minions spawned LI, which made it quite pleasant.

I mainly played fire sorcs as a noob on ladder back in the day, and never really gave lite sorcs a chance before now. I was intrigued by using ES for the possibility of breaking the rule of 1 vita = 2 hp for sorcs with energy and %max mana. Still I ended up deciding to go for HP > mana so I wouldn't die to mana burn or blood mana curse and opted for trang cdr over frostburn mana. However, I stuck with nightsmoke for the 50% damage taken goes to mana and found some other items and charms with good mana bonuses. I also opted for max block on this final sorc after reading several forum discussions (although , and overall it ended up as a pretty sturdy sorceress. HP is only 900, but mana adds an extra 850 through ES, and insight/prayer combo allows for regen of both bulbs as do potions. Dual tree sorcs probably can't afford the points for ES (maybe FO/FW?) but I could see it having use on a pure blizz sorc (meph) or pure fire sorc (andy) aswell to put the mana bar to use defensively. Once you have infinity and you won't get meditation ES probably falls off for pvm though.

I spent a lot of time MF'ing, so it's hard to mention any notable drops since they rarely happened during questing. Vex for HoTo was while leveling in arcane sanctuary (previously wizzy). SoJ was from NM travincal which I farmed for gold on my barb for a bit. Rest was from NM andy or hell meph I guess. Hellforges were lem and hel o_O.
I have plans for new charcters, but I've become spoiled and want to wait for a gear piece here and there to take them beyond normal. Back to farming it is then!

Once again behind on guard threads, currently have 4 to do, so lets start with this one.

Guardian Zapdos

(Who technically isn’t a guardian according to the game because I killed baal in a game with Cyrax who already had. I still consider her complete though because she did finish the game)

This is a pure Lightning Sorceress, named after the legendary bird Pokémon. After making this character I immediately regretted not naming my fire sorc Moltres, and my blizz sorc Articuno, but it’s too late for that. Build is the standard max lightning and chain lightning, rest into synergies and mastery. Ultimate goal for her of course is baal runs, what else. After getting the necessary gear to make this build work from fred’s giveaway (Come back fred! Come back!) it was time to unpark her.

Build and Gear Progression:

The build is pretty standard, and everyone knows it by now for a pure lightning sorceress, max out lightning and chain lightning, pump charged bolt and nova for synergy and max light mastery. Current skill points are being put into Nova as it’s the last skill I have to max. I put 1 point into all the other standard skills as they became available (shiver armor, static, teleport, es, etc.) I believe Lightning was maxed first (with one point in mastery when it became available) then chain lightning. I choose to max charged bolt over nova first for spamming ability.

Stats are the same as they always are, enough strength for spirit shield, rest into vitality.

Gear progression worked out to be my standard starter gear, which is a mish mash of various set pieces (cleglaws, harus’s, angelics, etc, with a khalim’s will flail). It eventually moved into lower level caster gear including spirit sword, vmagi, peasant crown, rhyme shield, magefist, infernostrides, nightsmoke belt, fcr rings, and a random skill ammy. From there items were replaced as end game equipment became available, consisting of Occy->Hoto, spirit shield, shako->griffon’s, aldurs boots, trangs, better fcr rings and ammy, and arach. Merc changed from insight to infinity when equipable and uses my standard setup of tals+treachery. I completed the game using a 200 fcr setup, as it was the first time I had griffon’s available for use and made it viable. I plan to switch this gear setup by changing the vmagi to 1.07 ark’s for the massive life boost, which will require some other gear and charm changes to maintain max resistances and settle into the 117 fcr bp.

Questing and Gameplay:

I think this sorc was originally created to play with one of Goldtru’s remade zons (She died a couple times on our way guardian so each time I would just make a new character to roll through normal again with her). She was then parked in Act 1 normal for a while as the other char’s questing continued. I used Shenk/Eldritch/Pindle runs to get her up to level 42 as I do with most characters who stall at the end of normal. I don’t recall any of nightmare, although nightmare is usually the difficulty where you can push through most everything without trouble. I then once again used shenk/eldritch/pindle in NM for more leveling before getting to a comfortable point to progress into hell.

Hell mode wasn’t difficult. Lightning immunes were a slight annoyance before I had infinity available/equipped as is the case for any single element sorceress, but once infinity was added, the game was essentially steamrolled. When arach became equipable I was able to hit the 200 fcr breakpoint, one of the few times where I wanted to play with the breakpoint just to experience how fast it was, and it is indeed fast, teleport can zip you around anywhere and most monsters are too slow to lay a finger on you. It’s neat and fun, but in a mp game half the time the teleport jumps you back anyway because it’s “too fast”. I also rather switch to a safer/more mf setup anyway which is where ark comes in. I played through on my own (with BO from barbarian) until essentially the very end where I joined up with Cyrax for Baal as we had just completed a different set of characters that needed some levels. Normal and Nightmare were played on P8, Hell was never played on anything less than P5.

Interesting finds:

I don’t remember anything particularly exciting. Hellforge was a Lum. Although I did run into a fan favorite in my travels, so if someone feels like making an entry feel free, I’m too lazy =P.

Future Plans:

Baal runs (hopefully mostly in MP), for the time being I’ll probably drag along one of my barbs for the BO until I settle into a good rhythm and see what my ending life is with ark’s equipped.

Ramblings
Ok, now the merc. Yes, I did use all 3 weapons on the merc. The Insight for general questing, and when FI's weren't an issue. The Obedience in Hell Chaos Sanctuary (lots of FI's,) and the Riphook against Hell Ancients.

Against strong FI's, such as Chaos Sanctuary, I'd divide and conquer. Pull off 1-3 at a time, and lure them away. For unique minions who don't run away from their unique, I tp bugged them so they did chase me, and static/tk'd them while the merc did most of the damage.
Against non FI's, they went down very quickly.

Hell
As I was rushing her, the merc was very underlevelled (as was I, but at least I had something to kill most things before they got close.) I teleported past most areas, and killed mostly only what I needed. I skipped many side-quests, and took down most champion/unique packs I came across.
I reached Hell Act 1 at level 51, which I laughed at because I normally finish Normal at ~45 before moving to NM. Surprisingly, the experience was decent, and the unique packs definitely helped. Unfortunately, the merc could hardly stand up to anything, and extra fast spawns were very dangerous - think HC, ~600 health and you get the idea. :)

Despite porting through most areas, she levelled pretty well, and ended up at level 70.

Many... With such gear with low hitpoints, it did worry me a bit.
Not surprisingly, the Oculus was a pain. When I really needed it to teleport me away, it wouldn't trigger. When I was completely safe, it teleported me into numerous packs, multiple times in a row.

Hell Ancients (thrower) nearly killed me on my first try. One axe took me to below half health, so I was lucky the other one missed me.

Random teleporting. Do I need to explain? Teleporting blindly with such low hitpoints is dangerous. Teleported into walls numerous times, only just making it out, just to see the Oculus teleport me into another pack. Lot's of fun. :rolleyes:

Random charging zombie pack through random teleport. I could only just see a little red in my life bulb before I hit "3" Juvie and got out of there.

The Ancients
Only rerolled once, because two spawned with extra fast. With a level ~65 merc, he could not tank, and neither could I. So, grabbed an Act 1 rogue, and used the Riphook. The first two (thrower and leap) I took on at once, and just teleported back and forth Fireballing them. The third (whirlwinder) was FI, so I just teleported around, letting blood seep into the holy grounds.
I used the Insight myself at times, since FCR wasn't required.

Worldstone Keep
This place was fun, but the Ancients were the only thing that worried me. The rest I thought I could teleport through. Well, blind teleporting nearly killed me 3 or 4 times in the WSK. Mass flayer/fetish guys are fun when they're all grouped, and you happen to port into the ONLY space occupied by them.
Pretty good spawns otherwise. Baal's chamber had dolls, so they were the last hurdle that could actually come close to killing Ariana.

Wave 1: FI shaman. Obedience FTW.
Wave 2: No FI's - 6k Fireball!
Wave 3: No FI's
Wave 4: Fireball didn't do much to them, so I tp bugged them, and they came out two at a time. Obedience merc took care of them, along with Static.
Wave 5: All FI. Go figure... I didn't even realise they were FI, so I just lured them out and parked them.

Baal: Who? He barely touched me. His tenticle thingy's spawned around me a bit, but they weren't really a threat.

Hell HF: Mal!
Other finds: Well, as she didn't kill a lot, there weren't a lot of drops. She was more for safety and FCR than MF. Overall, I started her yesterday when I had nothing to do. Nothing near a 3 hour Guardian, but a very fast one none-the-less, and one which was a bad choice to rush - Fire is probably the hardest element - Chaos Sanctuary is a nightmare. Time for a short break. Hopefully tomorrow will be clear and good beach weather. :)

Yes, finally zumzum made it to guardian. It has been a long journey, with several deeds. Before moving on to the actual char, I'd like to give honorable mention to her two older sisters:

zumzum: I planned to make a chanter with the sole purpose of being a rusher. Fittingly, zumzum was power rushed through pretty much the entire game until she at lvl 2x impatiently entered a not-so-safe TP in a5 Hell. Instadeed.

zumzumII: Again, she was rushed. She did however also quest through parts of the game. She then stopped at NM Baal where Solar helped me level - this was awesome and we had some very unexpected finds including Heaven's Light and a Lo rune. However, I then proceeded to the most embarassing deed of my D2 career - while trying to defend Solar's whatever character that tagged along for xp (multiple .dll) I deeded to baals tentacles at lvl 56 (iirc). Lost a couple of skillers which sucked.

But, along the journey, zumzum wasn't the only one who deeded. May Jason's nova sorc who bit it at NM Trav rest in piece as well. Your deeds of valor will be remembered.

Not much to say about gear and skill distribution. Orb is, as always, an amazing back-up skill and HotO+Lidless was a decent chant/tele switch and also gave some nice extra res. I did consider using Mang Song's instead for the style, but never got around to it - also, lvl req.
I went with the Holy Freeze/Reaper's/Delirium merc for CC galore. Didn't really need an Insight merc as max warmth provided great regen. Merc generally had very decent survivability.

The Journey:

Honestly, I can't remember how she got to hell. I think it was a mix of questing/rushing and then NM Baaling 'til around lvl 70. She was then parked for a long time, where all she did was help out a couple of other guys with rushing them through normal and NM.
For hell she teamed up with Pyro's furyzon "Freddy_Sunshine" (named after your's truly). The two ranged gals quested through all of hell together - we took a small break as I did a bit of LKing after discovering a war scepter rack, but yesterday we finished A5 where cdm also joined us for the last half.
Overall we (as always) had great fun. I was very pleasently suprised with her kill speed - questing with a furyzon with lvl 43 LF ofc means that she was mostly just there as a back-up for LIs (since pyro carried my CTA on switch), but she did a very decent job on these.

She had a single very NDE as I tele'd into a huge pack of lite beetles somewhere in the maggot lair, but emptying my belt of purples and panic teleing away kept me alive.

All in all a very very fun character that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Finds:
Nothing major that I can recall. Gul, Pul, Mal and a couple of decent charms in LK.

Plans:
Her purpose is to be a rusher (for NM and norm at the least). Aside from this, she will probable run a bit of sporadic LK and tag along on whatever MP runs for some levels.

Inventory is crammed full of charms. And by full I mean full. :D

I guess it's pretty obvious what most things are for: Ribcracker provides damage & CB, Demon Limb has level 23 Enchant, Gloom takes defence to good levels with the ribcracker bonus & Shiver armour. SoE for leech & PDR, Angelic Jewelry so I can actually hit things and gore rider for more CB & DS.

But the most important item for this build was the Darksight Helm. Yes, you heard correctly. And more specificly, the 30 level 5 Cloak of Shadows charges on the helm are the one thing that take this sorc from "barely viable" to "Holy Crap!". If you've played an assassin you know how powerful CoS is and it's even more powerful on a fragile sorc with now crowd control of her own. I didn't use the helm on my first try and really struggled through the game until I got owned leveling my sorc at NM Baal. Doing some MF runs with my necro this baby dropped (again, already had 5) and I finally noticed that this is just what I need. And the second sorc was a breeze to play except for a few situations. More on that later.


Merc

I use a Might merc for this one. Yes, might. The ribcracker has excellent base damage and might fits that just perfectly. He uses a Reaper's Toll, Shaftstop and either Vamp Gaze or Guillaume's Face, depending on what I need.


Thoughts

Truth to tell, when I first started this lady, or rather, her predecessor, I thought she might make it through hell but I was convinced that it would take ages and be a pain in the ass to play. And it was on the first try. But with cloak of shadows it was actually quite easy.

Not actually getting enchant safes me a lot of skill points which allows me to play this a truly tri-elemental sorc. Shiver armour provides good defence and the cold effect lasts for 5 seconds in hell which is really helpful. Mana Shield is pretty damn good, too. At first glance you might think it's not that useful because I only have 7 points in there but that's still about 50% of the damage that gets absorbed by mana and with maxed warmth mana comes back fast.

General strategy was to just teleport / run into bigger mobs of enemies and cast cloak of shadows. By the time it ran out the remaining monsters were no big deal anymore. Gloom also helped out against ranged attackers like gloams or archers.

The most dangerous area was actually the chaos sanctuary since it was really crawling with OKs and my merc went down all the time. A couple bosses in various acts spawned with nasty mods, too, but nothing really unsurmountable. The ancients were extremely anti-climactic, got them on the first spawn with barely half of my potions used. Mods were really lucky, just one extra strong and that guy wasn't immune to fire. CB really owns those guys hard.

Hm, what else? Ah, yes, she did find a couple nice items for me: A stone crusher and a couple decent runes. Mal from the Hellforge and a Lem from the crystalline passage. Also 2 dols from the hell council. She's probably my rune-luckiest char ever.


Well, that's it, thanks for reading. :D I usually turn my more successful chars into guides but I think I might pass on this one since she seems to be too out of the ordinary. You might want to keep the darksight helm in mind, though, just in case you ever have a char that is almost viable but lacks crowd control. It worked even better than the delirium I had on my merc at first.

I think you can guess almost every item. The Visceratuant is upgraded, the rings are 2 Jordans I had gambled in HC classic. Cheesy but whatever. Charms are mostly life and some resis.

Merc was might, of course. Reaper's Toll, Vamp Gaze and Fortitude Armour. He did most of the work most of the time. Not for lack of trying, but it seems every second area is completely fireimmune or at least massively resistant and he just kills so much faster.

Yawn. And Hydra still sucks. My fireball kills faster. Good thing about hydra is you can cast it and run around screaming like a little ***** instead of standing in place. So vs Fireball, Hydra still has something going for it (also it costs less mana). But vs meteor it just loses outright and badly.

So yeah. Her way through the game was pretty uneventful. A few fun moments when I teleported instead of casting a Hydra. In Act 5 Hell, Ancients way I found a pack of 40 Lancers this way. That was close but max block is win.

Hellforges were Um and Fal in NM and Hell respectively. Her best find was Sander's Cap (!!!) from Hell Meph on his quest drop. Whee! Another hard one off the grail.

Biggest nuisance was the chaos sanctuary. I thought I'd never get that done. Oh my god, it's full of immunes -.- Go to hell 3 / 3 of the seal guardians were FI. Screw that ****. Merc died a million times to Iron Maiden, too. Diablo was easy, though. Hydra is very good vs bosses for some reason. I don't quite get why.

I was a bit worried about the ancients and the first one spawned cursed so I rerolled them after my merc went down in 2 Hits. Gulp. Second spawn I just checked for FIs and since 2 were non-FI I started spamming hydras and ran circles around the old people, after heroically tanking them for 2 sec to cast static field, again, max block was win. 2 of them went down really fast and FE Whirler belonged to my merc. Had I not forgotten CB gear it would have been over in under a minute. Used one potion on the merc and that's it.

Well, that's it for her. I learned that a lot of things are FI and that this char is going to be retired faster than you can say "OMFG, HYDRA SI TEH SUXXOR!!!!".

19 down. Uh... (7 x 7 minus 19) *thinking* ... 30 to go! Ha! Piece of cake...

Next up... Lightning + Fire Blast Trapper. Maxing the complete trap branch, getting burst of speed, CoS, Weapon Block and we're set. Maybe I'll even skip a merc for her... Then again, maybe not.

Build and Gear Progression:

The build is as standard as it gets for a pure fire sorceress, max out fireball and meteor, pump the fire bolt synergy and fire mastery. I put one point into all of the other standard skills (Static, teleport, ES, Shiver Armor) as they became available. I believe the order I maxed them in was fireball, then meteor, fire bolt, fire mastery in that order. With all the skill quests done, the build was essentially complete at level 84.

Stats are standard as always, enough strength for spirit shield, rest into vitality, none anywhere else.

Gear progression worked out to be my standard starter gear, which is a mish mash of various set pieces (cleglaws, harus’s, isenharts, etc, with a gemmed wirts leg), moving up to a ravenclaw +enchant for early game leveling. It eventually moved into lower level caster gear including spirit sword, vmagi, peasant crown, rhyme shield, magefist, rare boots, nagels, and a random skill ammy. From there items were replaced as end game equipment became available, consisting of Oculus, spirit shield, shako, and 3 piece tals. The magefist, nagels, and rare boots stuck around.

Questing and Gameplay:

I don’t remember too much of normal and nightmare, but I do remember some very specific things. The first iteration of this character PewPewPew, met an unfortunate demise at the hand of Lister and company in a normal baal run. I remember specifically playing with pharphis in this run I believe with his necromancer and he was able to recover for me. It wasn’t a huge setback at level 28, but it was enough to make me annoyed and restarted almost immediately. I then brought in some outside help (my in progress enchantress) to make things go a little faster). After getting past the initial setback, I was on my way. I think I was in and out of a couple games with some others, but got to a decentish level and settled into NM andy runs. Here she sat for quite some time, doing the same thing, over and over.

At some point I decided that if I wanted to get some other useful things as well, I could probably run Hell Andy and still have a decent chance at various rings, including BK’s. I can’t really remember who I played with but NM didn’t take very long and was probably rushed through to make it to Hell.

I specifically remember starting to run Hell Andy at level 62, the reason being of course that I could start wearing shako. She found a nice map (6ish ports to each set of stairs) and repeatedly killed Andy many, many times at P1 progressing to P3/P5 as I leveled reaching level 80. It was at this point I started getting extremely bored with running Andy and started doing other things as well, mostly running the mausoleum (no matter how inefficient it was). I even started doing the questing in small pieces to get to the last skill quests, and the stats/life quests in act 3. I thought about questing with some of the other HCers to make it easier, being a pure fire sorc and all, but decided against it as I didn’t want to lose the map. Besides, it was a challenge to show that a pure fire sorc could take on hell mode, despite the number of fire immunes.

Needless to say, progress was made, slowly but surely. There was a lot of teleporting, but if I came across any pack that wasn’t fire immune I was sure to kill it. Some areas are definitely nicer than others in that regard, but overall it wasn’t too difficult. I was able to play through hell steadily at P3/P5 except for a couple of cases (chaos, ancients, and lister). Anything that wasn’t fire immune was pretty much steamrolled. Fire with maxed out synergies makes some pretty big numbers and it shows.

One of the exceptions where I had to tone down the P-settings was the chaos sanctuary, the sheer number of fire immunes there made me merc support more often than not and anything higher in settings made the merc get swarmed easily. I specifically switched the merc’s hat to steel shade for the fire absorb when facing Infector’s mob. I even decided to restart once since he spawned with holy freeze, and it just wasn’t working out in my favor. Other than that it was smooth sailing. The ancients were also put down to P1, and rerolled once. The first time they all spawned fire immune. The second, only Madawc spawned without fire immune, but the other two weren’t lightning immune so I took it and ran with it, separated them out and static+tk for the two immunes. The WSK levels were decently easy, and fairly short. The only fun surprise was a gloam+serpent+horadrim stair trap once I reached the throne. The minions were handled fairly easily; Ventar’s crowd was slow, but not as bad as in the chaos sanctuary since they aren’t fire immune here. Lister and company was also P1, since they always spawn fire immune. I was originally going to park them, but decided against it feeling that it would seem incomplete, especially since the normal difficulty ones killed my first sorceress, so it was divide and conquer until the last one fell. Baal was cake in comparison.

Interesting finds:

End result of all of the andy runs filled in my rings and ammy collection a little more, including 2 BK’s, 2 Sojs, and many, many others (but never enough ravens). Also found an Ohm rune from one of the countless runs. I think I actually found Andariel’s Visage from a boss pack on the way to Mausoleum which was a first and ironic, but nothing actually interesting in the Mausoleum. Oh and a random oculus from a pack in act 5. Hell forge was a Lem.

Future Plans:

Probably more Andy since the map is so nice, but not for a while. Right now the focus is pretty much only on mausoleum, and she will probably stay here for quite some time.

My merc ws dying like a fly to their powerful attacks. At last I got spawn where 2 of them was FI and 1 CI but no FI/CI. The fight took 30 minutes of teleporting, orbing and fireballing.

Guardian Samantha Strange

This was my first guardian since a complete reinstall and starting with minimal gear. Vipermagi dropped along the way which helped and I had wizardspike from my Paladin find.

Once I hit 25 I equipped a spirit sword. Shield was from stash (remember I lost 4 other HC toons all around levels 74-83) and I made spirit, perfect roll.

Hellforge was an Mal. (Which I lost when ATMA crashed/stash disappeared for some reason, after I picked up an essence of hatred from Meph-anyone know what's going on with why this happens? I lost a lot of gear..)

I respecced her from a Meteorb to a Blizzballer in Hell and am happier for it. I really hated meteor as a spell.

Sorcs are so much fun!! Ancients were a pain as always. Oh, I found eth boneweave and cubed - was going to make 'Stone' but did 'Treachery' due to sockets rolled. This helped my merc a lot.

In summary, for my HC character play so far, I died twice due to ancients, once bad luck with a kicker and once due to me playing badly with my frost zealot or he would have made guardian.

She did most of the game carefully and methodically without too many NDE's. I'd made a similar build to mid-hell previously so there weren't too many surprises for her. The Hell Ancients were certainly an experience (which you can read about in the HC Ladder thread (1st page) if you wish), with the 13th spawn of them being doable for her.

The WSK itself, after an aborted first run was quite easy the second time around, even with Vipers, Spawners and Black Souls on the 3rd level. Teleport really is just about the best skill in the game. ;)

Her best finds were Taebaek's Glory in WSK 3, M'avina's Embrace from Baal himself, the stuff she was wearing, Jade Talon, Titan's Revenge, Spike Thorn, Heaven's Light (eth for uber damage), Trang's Claws, Trang's Wing, Tal's Fine-Spun Cloth, Whitstan's Guard (x2 or 3), M'avina's Tenet, IK SC (x 2 or 3), Dangoon's Teaching (x2), Dark Adherent, Aldur's Stony Gaze as well as a number of Exceptional uniques including 2 Burrito Cannons.

She now retires from the ladder to don some "non-ladder" MF equipment to take on a role as my primary (for now) Grail runner.

When i came back to d2 after a long hiatus (mainly Dota2/World of Warcraft). I wanted to make a sorc for the usual farming (Mephisto/Andy/LK/Pindle). So i created Cassandra, the untwinked meteorber.
Sadly i killed her out of stupidity at act5 hell while farming Eldritch (yes, i suck):

After that rip i was a bit shocked because i had never experienced a death like that. My hardest rip until then was on act1 NM while farming Andariel.
The very next day i was pumped, i wanted to recover the time invested. So i jumped straight to the game, created another sorc and started playing as fast as i could.

The second day after Cassandra's death i was at act 2 hell with Anailuj. After a good session of LK with my untwinked Fishy (Sur + Mal @300 runs) i decided to rush act3 and then go to sleep. What a mistake:

Well now, starting from the name. Speeder was supposed to be a temp name for this sorc. Originally I had similar HC sorc that unfortunately deeded at hell Hephasto. Her name was JemmaHC (inspired by cute suicidegirl that I saw while browsing Imgur ;) ).

Being ominous suicide-girl made me ignore the fact that my defensive act 2 merc was three (3) times one shotted by Hell Hephasto while I teleported around fireballing away. Guess what, I got oneshotted like a victim of a guillotine execution in 1977 France.

After the humiliation from extra strong fana aura Hephasto, I hastely started a new sorc to keep running NM/Hell Mephisto. In a hurry I named my new HC sorc Speeder. I had the luxury of twinking her a little since I had collected some nice items to pass down. So I speeded her right in to Mephistos face yet again in Hell.


Playing on P/8 all the way until Hell act1 and then running to end of act 3 in P1.

I leveled from 81 to 84 by running almost entirely hell meph since I reeeally wanted some decent gear including Shako and Stormshield and some other gear for my new HC characters.


I had some stroke moments here and there when thinking that Gods of Diablo could possibly have some mercy on me.

I could have gone happily with yellow shield and golden shako.
Since I had no luck of finding my shako I started running Ancient tunnels and kept leveling.

Had very little luck there. I was bitter, had a horn on my forehead and considered using this helm to embrace my mood.

After playing quite a few chars to hell in the mean time I decided to go back to grinding Meph.

After a lot of Mephs later I finally found the one item I had in my mind from the beginning of my SPHC career.

It was almost night and I had work the next day so I only run few times to Meph with my new helm.
Had also some extra pay for working so patiently.

So I had gotten my Shako and didn’t daydream of getting a stormshield very next day from Meph. I decided to move past Diablo and resque Anya in act5. Quite frankly I was bit terrified of souls and lighting but kept thinking that I’d give it a try and bail out if my pants caught on fire.


As I proceeded towards Chaos Sanctuary the very first pack of monsters dropped me a surprise.

That drop made me laugh since it was just day before I had gotten my first Shako.

Kept my already socketed Shako on and kept on going.

Teleported around Diablos pentagram and made him easy if just a tad long fight.


Act 5 I pretty much teleported through until I reached Anya and had some really close calls mainly because of souls.

Soon after this I was feeling little confident and went onwards to find ancient waypoint. I also checked where on this map I would find the hole to climb to mount arreat. Guess what? Well of course you guess it since it’s a Guardian thread. I needed to test how would the Hell Ancients feel with my sorc. Rerolled them 2 times since they had some extra nasty mods and immunities. Third try I decided that despite one of them being cursed and I think one was might I would take them on. My merc couldn’t keep his act together for few sec with them so I had to save him constantly and take the Ancients out one at the time (I baked them some Orb-cake and made them eat it).


After ancients I once again had some confidence and made up my mind that it’s about time to try and take Baal’s minions for a walk. No funny business beside souls in WS K lvl3. Minions agreed to come walk with me and despite the fact that I had cleared all of that level for safety, none of that space was needed. Every last one of them was set free in the presence of Baal and his pathetic throne.

Baal himself was of no match to my determination. I knew that if Ancients and Baal’s minions couldn’t stand before me neither could he.

It was no surprise that he fell so easily since all that he had for drop were Arioc’s needle and Bladebuckle (which I already was wearing).

There, it was done and it most certainly was fun. I must admit that I do miss that 34 life 15 allres grandcharm that went down with JemmaHC. I took care of my resists with Mosers with 2 perf diamonds and skin of vipermagi. Also had Tals amu and some rather decent charms like 11Fire res/7mf small charm and such.


Thank you for taking the time to read my rather mediocre journey to Guardian. It was however an important one for author.

I'm already planning on making more of my chars Guardians. After few of those and I know I'm going to try making selffound-only guardian where I can not use any previously acquired items.

Well this sorc was very powerful, all non CI falls very easy even on high players settings and the CI:s takes my merc and Fire Wall care off.

Why this build? I decided that it would be interesting to try a trap sorc:wink3: In fact, I wanted to make a Hydrasorc long ago, but I was afraid of small dmg, which was shown in the skillplanner. But it appeared even more fun than I expected. I placed 5 hydras one after another, each of them made 10 shots and the dmg was great. I used Hydra and fire Ball for all non-fire immune. For others was Blizzard. The build is very fragile, because you need a lot of FCR, this means little res and life gear (for me especially, I was fully untwinked)

The most difficult points were Normal Mephisto (two previous HC sorcs died from his ugly hands) and Hell Ancients. What concerns the Ancients, I was trying to kill them 5 times. 4 of these five ended in save&exit. Imagine my state - the hands are trembling, the back is in cold sweat... I was so scared to make a mistake, that my heart was beating fast even an hour later.
Finally, I managed to kill them. The first died leaper, because I managed to separate him from the other two. Then was the whirlwinder. The thrower died last, 'cause he was light enchanted, and my resists were bad.

The difficulties in gameplay for me were of my SC past habits. It is no need to be very carefull, when you know that after the death you can start again. This time I needed all my attention to overcome the difficulties I met.

And here is my first char since August-'07. In order to recollect and restore my playing skills I created a Sorceress (it's better to start witn an easy character, isn't it?).

I made some twinking. First of all, I decided to use my 30% Death's Fantom (it has been collecting dust in my stash since I got it from Pindle about a year ago). From the very moment I got Glacial Spike, the game was a breeze. AoE + 100% Freeze + no delay = both strong and safe PvM sorc. I can't remember any monster in Hell that I couldn't kill in 6-7 spikes or 2-3 meteors. Both skills worked surprisingly well either as a combo, or as independant sources of damage.

When I reached NM Meph, I decided to make some runs. They were extremely rewarding: within ~20 runs I got Shaftstop, Magefist, Silkweave, WWS, Tal's Orb and a whole bunch of normal uniques and sets (sold to Ormus).
No other notable finds in NM except a Ravenfrost from a gloam at the Frozen River. Hellforge gave me Shael.

Hell was much easier than I expected. When I left NM, my level was 68 or so and I had 500-ish spike and 2000-ish Meteor. However, monsters were dieing quickly. Everything non-CI was frozen and shattered. Everything non-FI was smashed and fried. I made another stop: I levelled up till 73 in Pits and Tower. Pits gave me nothing but exp. Countess was extremely generous. She probably handed me all her Els and Elds -_-.
At level 73 I changed Tal's Orb to Death's Fantom. With this lil' toy, spike damage raised to 900 and Meteor damage increased to 3k. So I tele'd through A3 (no finds) and A4. Hel from Hell Hellforge. Neat -_-. 10 minutes later, a fingermage in Chaos Sanctuary dropped a Lem. Diablo gifted me with a Viscer (socketed it with an Um from my stash) which was actually a nice alternative to Rhyme.
A5 had no notable drops/events. Ancients were easy (though I had to cover the area with a layer of blue potions before touching the altar). Baal's minions didn't pose any threat to me, even Lister's pack (Freeze!!).
Baal himself was killed rather quickly. He dropped a Blood Crescent -_-.

Orni's future is quite clear - /p8 LK chest runs (some day, I'll get a Ber). After a bit of levelling, of course.
