Just thought I would post that I have finally made my first guardian since starting SP. Conveniently named Skelemancer, he is a skelemancer/fishymancer. Took about 1 month to get all the way through untwinked. Spent lvls 82-87 doing meph runs and finally gaining his guardianship at lvl 88 (just a fraction from 89 :))

Notes:

Played normal and nightmare all on /players8 and naturally the only hassle I had was maggot lair and arcane sanctuary. Toned down to /players1 for the rest of hell except when I forgot to change back to players 1 when opening chests ;-). I do plan to take this character to lvl 99 once I have optimized his gear and rolled some decent summon charms.

Think my next character will be a pure blizz pindle sorc to get me that gear!

This is your standard Fishymancer with spare points in Dim Vision and Golem Mastery. For gear I focus on MF and GF, plus some good RES. I will use him to run many different areas, I got really lucky with my map seed. Great maps for Andy, Meph, Pits and WSK. My merc is a killing machine, bosses go down in seconds on P1 and reasonably fast on P3.

This was a very boring character to play. I hate the fishymancer; soooo ridiculously boring. It was boring. Did I say that I was bored yet?

Anyways, that was the main reason it took so long to finish. I had a few near death experiences, but nothing that bad. Overall I think that I like hardcore, but I like softcore more. I have another few chars in progress in hardcore and eventually I'll get around to finishing them. But, I'll probably have a few deaths before I get the next one because I started playing sorceresses, fewer tanks means more death and destruction for me.

No really good finds aside from the reapers toll. I had decided to do a few pit runs when I first got to hell to find a better merc weapon. After the reaper dropped I just played through the game wit ought any more runs. I had a lot of mf, but despite that my drops were only mediocre, even with the mf I had.'

The journey:
Normal and Nightmare were played on /p8 all the way, and Hell on /p1. Bone Spear and Spirit are a little low on damage, but the damage is very consistent. Having a synergized Bone Armor, 50% blocking, Clay Golem, Revives, Decrepify, Dim Vision and heavily stacked resists (watch me show off my resists under Conviction), this character really doesn't have a lot to be afraid of. To be honest, this character was a tad... boring at times. Luckily, Corpse Explosion is always there to make some fun (<-- oh, Hephasto happens to appear on that last one)!
Blah blah Diablo blah.

Act 5 was a little more tough, but was rather uneventful, on the whole. The gloams in the River of Ice were a challenge, but nothing too difficult. I did use Dim Vision a couple of times here, though. Still, gloams are overrated, in my opinion.
The Ancients were a joke. I didn't even take note of their mods, but you can see Korlic and Madawc and Talic yourselves. My Talic screenshot failed, though. The WS K was easy, the waves were a piece of cake and Baal was only a nuisance, though he did more damage than I had expected. I still didn't go below about 2/3 of my health, though.

Normally I take more screenshots and talk a lil' more, but this character just wasn't as exciting as the others. Not that I wouldn't recommend you to make one; it's just that there aren't as much OMG moments as with other characters. Also, accidently closing Google Chrome while making this thread doesn't help motivate me to write moar ^^. I was prepared though, as I occasionaly Ctrl+C Ctrl+V everything in a text document. Not much was lost, but it's getting late, so... yeah. Sorry! :scratchchin:

Q&A time!

Q: What would you do different next time?
A: I'd probably make a HotO for a little more offense. I could've made one with the runes I had, but I decided that I could make more fun items (i.e. 'build enablers') with them. As for other items, hopefully I'd have items like Homunculus, Arachnid's Mesh and maybe even an Enigma by that time. Stat-wise I'm really happy with him; I suppose his block% could be lowered a little, but he's fine the way he is now. Skill-wise it'll probably be similar, if not identical.

Q: Why did you not finish Trang-Oul's Avatar set with the helm:
A: That would give him an extremely slow cast rate. Also, I don't have the helm, which makes the choice pretty easy. ^^

Q: What are your future plans with him?
A: I dunno, actually. His safety and versatility warrents a nice WS K runner, so maybe I'll do that. Or maybe I'll just retire him. Haven't decided yet.

Summary
Well, this character was something different! In all my years of playing I've never made a poison-based character. I was a bit worried at first, but he turned out to be quite powerful! Full Trang's works really well. The FCR bug sucks big time! Poison Nova doesn't require fast casting, but it renders you immobile for a long time, especially by HC standards. Still, skellies provided a lot of safety. He had a small bit of safety from Bone Armor, which absorbed 160 damage. 50% blocking is a nice amount on this char. The only real two weaknesses of this character is the lack of stacked lightning resist and his low amount of life, which I was a bit unconfortable with. I didn't bother casting any AI curses, as I never found it necessary. Saving Anya was very dangerous without these skills, though, as I had both Souls and two types of whiches beating the undead crap out of my army (and me, every now and then).

Anyway, Gear-wise I was satisfied to say the least! Maybe I should have switched the Sandstorms with the Natalya's Soul I've recently traded with FredOfErik for some more stacked resists, but that would've cost me a FHR (and a blocking?) breakpoint, and some life as well. I probably should have used life/resist charms instead of the two P&B skillers. Oh well... :)

As awesome as the set is, I didn't find much use for the fire spells from this set; LR breaks most immunities, and the merc/summons could take care of anything else with Amp. I did have Fireball on my left mouse skill, for when I accidently click on a monster. Meteor was somewhat useful against those Act 5 barriers while the merc/minions were busy with something else. Firewall? Only used for ****s and giggles like, once or twice.

i've been playing him quite a bit using him as my base magic find character he started out doing pits until i felt he'd leveled enough to take on chaos sanc (my favorite spot), act 5 supers, and wsk. i've restatted him five times now and believe that i've got him where i want him so i figured i'd post here.

my only close calls have been when i got careless around multiple soul boss packs so about the only thing i'd change on my gear would be to use tgods. i'd like to use homunc too, but alas, i havent found one yet. i'm also partial to the mana, fcr, and goodies on spirit so i'm not quite sure if i would change if/when i find it. so that i could either have an awesome amount of life or go max block (would naturally like to have block, but i have had so few close calls that involved physical attacks that i doubt i would).

edit: since starting to write this thing; i've found a tgods, a homunc, and re-specialized about 3 more times. i have a great ammy for maxing block and tried it out once i got the homunc, but i rather liked the life total i got from no block and respec'd (again).

after using white for the longest time i decided to give hoto a try since my sorc wasnt using it at the time. i was also set on restatting (3rd time) and had a token so i decided that i'd give it and a new skill package a try. i found that +all skills were much better for my curses and my golem. while previously i had to spam confuse all over the place, now i just had to aim it in the general direction. my golem also tended to stay alive though i wind up recasting him quite frequently to get rid of curses and/or poisoning.

playing this guy has been a blast. as i've stated in a few threads, i really prefer confuse to attract. i used prison quite a lot in norm and early parts of hell, but once i got my gear/skills a bit better, i usually just use confuse so i dont have to wait on prisons to expire. i've fiddled with this guy's stats quite a lot and havent really had any be tons better than any of the others. i can state with certainty that this build can take any amount of fiddling w/o risking a fatal gear/skill mistake.

imma make this a quick 2fer and throw in my hammerdin. i made him because i actually like hammerdins. yes, yes, i know what people say about them and i understand. it's a love/hate with me too, but no one can dispute their power. if you do dispute it, you have blinders on. this time around, i wasnt going to make a hammerdin! so i made a tesladin and thoroughly enjoyed him up until late nightmare. i then was wanting another area runner to compliment the above necro and to give me something to switch to when i got a little bored (variety people!). i changed him to a typical hammerdin, but this time i did something i have never done before w/ a hammer and used HoZ. the dang thing is so vastly over-rated and i've openly scoffed at it, so i figured since i'd found one, i may as well give it a try. 'meh' it lets me get a bit more damage than a spirit would, but i'd still rather have a spirit. at one point the nec and the hammerdin were sharing all but shields and amulets, but they're different enough now that they only share shako, skulders, and hoto. it's a bit of a pain to swap gear, but i havent found dupes yet and am stuck. i doubt i'll make another hoto for a while in any case (it's further shared with the two sorcs i have as well).

BoneColdKiller is based on Mouseman's Explosionmancer. When I found a near suitable base wand (+1 Attract/+3 Decrip), BoneCold was born to thwart the plans of the Prime Evils. And what a great build he is. Good defense with synergised Bone Armour, good damage with BS, awesome pwnage with CE and Amp, crowd control with Attract and a durable tank in the Clay Golem. Why is the AI of the CG so much better than the merc? The CG would always stay close to me until he sights a monster and attacks. Then he returns to guarding me when the fight is over. The merc on the other hand often takes a :coffee: break in the middle of a fight or he gets lost in a side room. Really irritating. I would often use my CG as a scout to see if enemies are lurking around corners. If so, I'd hit an attract, just to further control the situation, Amp the lot, spam Spear until merc finally decides to get involved, then CE once the first corpse goes down.

Hell Ancients were very easy as were all Act Bosses: Decrip, CG, Kelpie, Guilliame's for CB, BoneSpears. My teleport circlet is now my fave way to separate the Ancients. It really does help. All good stuff. Hell was played at p/3 except for Act Bosses and the Ancients(P/1). BoneCold can handle, np. No NDEs, very safe char. Future plans? RoF and Pindle for items and exp.

„Darkness falls across the land…“

…and in its shadows, a baby was born. Cute little toddlers, those babies, you think? Let me guess: you have no children. During the day, they may look peaceful, cute and lovely, but when night falls…the Horror begins! What horror you ask? Come, and let me show you…

The baby was born into a dark and shallow place, haunted by the Prime Evils. Who its father was or is, is not known, and no one can live to tell, because the mother, Aliza, lost her mind in the first nights: Night after night, the baby just kept crying, without pause. The mother tried everything from soothing and rocking to screaming, but to no avail: The baby just wouldn’t stop crying. The mother, deprived of her sleep, grew more wretched with every day by the horrendous screams of her baby, and on the 13th night, her mind finally cracked. That was the time the baby decided to take down the world. Oh yes, with no father and a mother daft as a moron, what would you do? Exactly. And the baby knew just the way it could destroy humankind…the Worldstone! If it was destroyed, then demons would swallow all mankind, and the baby would finally get to know its father.

So the baby started looking for the world stone, hobbling on a Demon Limb (is a Prime Evil after all its father???), its crazy mother Aliza watching over it and protecting it relentless with the hot fury only a mother can show when her child is in danger. She helped the baby on its journey towards the Worldstone, thus unknowingly becoming a traitor to mankind herself. And a dangerous journey it was. But, the thirteen days of futile attempts to silence the baby proved helpful in protecting the baby: She shooed the enemies of the baby away or blinded them, which was very helpful, because her baby’s sight wasn’t very well developed yet (-12 Light radius from equipment): That’s how dark the world can be for a baby, or even this dark. No wonder babies turn to the light…

So, how did the baby manage to destroy the worldstone?

The baby used its ability to attract people only to deploy a nauseating circle of smelly death, leaving only rotten corpses behind. Sometimes even, the baby just waited for the right moment to set off a giant explosion of poo and miasma, crippling those near by the stench. And if this wasn’t enough, the darkforce spawn used the poisonous sharp blade found in a black bog*. Not the swamp bog, but the other bog, you know…the loo, the lav, the john, the pot…there are a thousand names for the horror of the bog. Sometimes, when someone was resistant to the smells and stenches of the baby, it used its Baby’s Blessing – that is the power to slow down grownups to a crawl and be all fuzzy-wuzzy with the baby – to bring down Doom among those who dare to resist the stench and refuse to flee in Terror. Of course, the baby wasn’t just wrapped in any nappy, either. Some grownups even felt very decrepit when confronted with such a young being, and the baby drew upon their life with its constant demands and screams. Some were even blinded by the beauty and cuteness, but they weren’t spared. All in all, grownups tend to have lower resists to a baby’s wishes and demands, it seems…

Of course, the baby couldn’t have made its journey without its dearest friend Gumby. Having been thrown to the floor some million times, spewed upon and used to hit the table, he had to be very sturdy and survived even the meanest attempts to get past him to stop the baby. After what seemed years, but were only days, the baby finally finished the Prime Evils, but Tyrael intervened and destroyed the Worldstone himself, robbing the baby of its personal revenge. Instead, people began worshipping it as their Guardian. But the baby is not done yet. Not till mankind is destroyed. It has heard, that Diablo will walk the earth once again soon…

The idea
Being a father since some weeks myself, my wife and I had several talks about the bad sight of our daughter. When I read about the necessity to equip either Darksight Helm or Sigon’s Visor, I discovered the –Light Radius on the first one and thought about building a character with as much negative modifier to Light Radius as possible. I found out that the lowest LR you could get was -12 (and updated the wiki) and chose items to meet that threshold: Darksight Helm (-4), Cresent Moon Amulet (-2), Gloom Dusk Shroud (-3), Nosferatus’s Coil (-3). At first, I experimented with an upped Umbral Disk (to Luna - even had it already socketed) and Highlord’s Wrath instead of Crescent Moon, till I noticed, that Hit Blinds Target and Life Tap don’t work well together and I’d lose the -2 Light Radius from Umbral Disk as soon as I used the weapon switch. That’s why I went with Moser’s Blessed Circle and Darkforce Spawn instead (and Crescent Moon Amulet).

That’s only half of the idea though. The rest was based on our sleepless nights: People would always say about our daughter: “She’s so cute! So lovely! And so good and quiet! I could take her with me right now!” and we used to respond: “Go ahead – as soon as night falls, you will beg us to take her back…”. So I thought: Well, being parents can be a nightmare, too…the lost sleep, the smell, the cries…we look like zombies some days, but still we have the unbreakable wish to be there with the baby and unconditional love, no matter how bad some nights (or nappies) might be :) That's where the idea of the Rogue merc as mother came from. (Disclaimer: I really love my daughter dearly and have no bad feelings whatsoever about her. But life with a baby is not as shiny and easy a life as non-parents picture it either. Hence the introduction of a baby in the Horror theme).

Gear
My main goal (besides the –Light Radius) was to get AR (AR charms, Raven Frost, Rare ring with AR, Argent Jewels, Demon Limb), then resists (Scintillating charms, Um rune) while keeping true to the idea. Plus, I needed a lot of IAS for the zerker axe (used the only 3 argent jewels of Fervor I had). There weren’t as many items as I wished there would be for the baby theme (Orphan’s Call sprang to mind, but it offers a lot of +Light Radius…), so I filled the spots in question with items to make the build somehow viable (IK boots and gloves for example). Gameplay
-12 Light Radius left me with no light whatsoever on the character. Additionally, I only played the character after dark, because that’s the time babies start to be awake and keep you awake. I thought about only walking instead of running (babies aren’t too fast after all), but dismissed the idea as soon as I tried it out (gosh! Did the journey take long walking!!!). So what? Sue me! I mean, subtract style points! 😉

I was able to equip everything I wanted to equip at level 69 (upped Blackbog’s Sharp), which was in Act 5 NM. Up till then the game was very easy, because Poison Nova really is overpowered, and the Baby used its favorite rattle "Bonesnap", first as Maul, then as War Club. Once I got Blackbog’s Sharp and Darkforce Spawn, things got even worse for my enemies. 30% FCR is enough for Poison Nova/Explosion, and Poison Dagger is great with “Hit causes monster to flee” (Dol Rune in Blackbog’s Sharp). Poison Explosion's radius is somewhat small, so Poison Nova was the main skill used, except for difficult enemies, where I didn’t want to get too close too often (higher damage, longer duration). Poison Dagger was used against bosses, on switch with Doom and Life Tap or Lower Resists or Decrepify, depending on what was needed.

The curses, the Holy Freeze aura from Doom and Silence on my merc made this a very safe character, esp. as Gumby got stronger and stronger. He could handle some boss packs even on /p5 in Hell, but most of the time /p1 was more than enough. The Ancients were actually a piece of cake: Decrepify and slow from Gumby to separate them, then Decrep/Life Tap and Poison Dagger/Doom/shooting from my merc to take them down one by one. The hardest fight was probably NM Lister on /p8. I didn’t have a sturdy Clay Golem back then and those guys are immune to some curses, so it was a lot of hit and run (IIRC Lister was extra fast).

Overall, it was a fun character and I was surprised by the killing speed of Poison Nova and my merc…Silence really is an option for an Act 1 merc in my books from now on, even if the “hit blinds target” mod overrides curses – but only from one monster most of the time, because the merc concentrates fire on one target. The chance to flee from the Dol rune and Silence were a nice addition, too, especially with the poison damage and added safety. The chance to cast Dim Vision from Gloom was a life saver in two or three situations, too. So all in all I’m glad I tried something different for a change and am proud to announce my first Doom Guardian :jig:

Oath for the ctc Bone spirit on striking. Scourge is possibly the best weapon for this build as it has a nice balance of speed and damage.

Bone armour isn't exactly necessary, but it was a nice choice for the build as it has some ctc effect, skills and resis. Treachery would have been more effective in every way than bone, but I wanted to try it for fun.

White wand is to play as caster if real nasty packs come.Didn't have another homunc so I had to switch the same one.(didn't have much use of this though)

Other stuff :

AR was my primary concern , without enchant his ar was absolute crap.One nice advantage with an oath PB is that we can refesh the no of HoW charges, which would have made a lot of difference.

Basic idea of the build is very simple, divide and rule. We do not have a mass killing skill(Ohh and forgot mention I didn't use Corpse Explosion as it was making the necro seem like a summoner; had to use it at Listers'), so I had to seperate monsters using Bone wall and kill each of them seperately.

He wasn't a fragile one like thought. Decrep was my main curse, so I had very less troubles of danger. Also I used to reposition CG, bone wall whenever necessary which made him pretty much safe. KT tanking two cursed ancients

ctc bone armour from "bone" was also very useful as it was cast whenever any troublesome mob attacked(or when I forget to decrep things).

NDE's : One at catacombs because of a conviction/ ligtning enchanted extra strong boss pack of afflicted, no idea how he survived.Another in CS with the pit lord seal boss.No other serious troubles anywhere else.

I was attacking at 12 fpa, 10 fpa can be reache d easily with Treachery(Or with oath PB)I didn't find this attack speed much troublesome (guess why? I have been pllaying a impalezon before this char. OMG.... nagisa(iirc) seriously deserves a standing ovation for matting her ).

btw, this is a 1.13 char.After losing two of my chars to IM and FE bug respectively, I lost almost all my 1 month HF rushed runewords, so I had to come back to 1.13 now.

I'm proud to present my 3rd guardian, Espiritu_Hueso. He's a bone necromancer who played through normal/nightmare on players8 and hell on players3. He finished at lvl 86. This is v1.14b, but he was started in 1.13, maybe earlier. GoMule is the only 3rd party app I use (no RWM). I did not do full clears with this guy, but he did complete all his quests (still a few rewards to collect), find all waypoints, and hunt down all superunique monsters. Many times that meant I full-cleared an area. He was twinked, using the best items I had available from my stashes. But as my HC wealth was even less than what I have now, he was self-finding things through Hell. He also got a lot of upgrades by Act 4 & 5 Hell from my MF druid running Mephisto.

His core skills were probably finished by ~lvl75, so at that point I was playing with things, hence the 13 hard points in Teeth. I figured I had enough DR from Bone Armor, and Teeth gives the same synergy bonus to Spear/Spirit. But I never did use Teeth; I don't even think maxing it before Bone Wall would have made its damage high to be a usable skill in Hell.

Notice the 3 non-hard points in Revive, and check out his gear to see the sweet Necro head which gave that bonus. That also saved me 3 hard skill points. With + skills he had a total of 4 revives, 6 through the final act.

100 base energy?!? Am I crazy? Maybe, but those points are because I don't get Infinity. Tired of chugging mana potions, and with a ton of leftover stat points, I decided to up my mana pool. It was totally worth it. This was way before I found a Shako for him to wear. His MF was higher and his resists a little lower through most of Hell. His fire resist is maxed at 85 since he is wearing Infernostrides.

When this character got into Hell, I really did not have many great A2 merc weapons. But I did have that nice 3os ethereal Legend Sword, so I made the Crescent Moon. Wulfstan was a great companion for this guy, and it was nice to jump off the Desert Mer

Notable (read: rememberable) finds include Arkaine's Valor in WSK1, an Ohm rune while questing in Act 3 (still need to make my 1st ever CtA) and a Gul from Hellforge. I'm sure there were plenty of other good ones (definitely a few of those charms in his stash).

As for this guy's future, I am undecided. I have a Wind Druid which does most of my MFing and has a great Meph map (1-2 teleports from lvl 3), but this guy has the BEST meph map, with the stairs right next to the WP. So I may regear him to see how he does with Mephisto runs.

I might use a respec to redo some of his stat/skill points. But those would just be minor tweaks. He'll probably take a break for a while, as I have several other HC projects I am working on, and I only get so much D2 time nowadays. I do have this wand which I will hope to get 2 sockets from and upgrade his White wand:

Haematopoiesis, my bone necromancer, has made it to guardianship. Honestly, he is a safe character and bosses are a joke as you can see in the video. Often prison wasn't actually required, but it was quite fun for The Ancients :p He may have an endgame role at some point, possibly running CS. I hope that somebody will get the joke in the title, it's my favourite so far, albeit a little dark^^

There were a couple of decent drops; Drac's, Bonehew and some miscellaneous charms. I haven't had a skiller in a very long time... No high rune either, shocking! As is standard for my guardians, he was P8/P8/P3. He could've gone higher in Hell but I never really bothered raising it. I have no idea what build is coming next. I have full Trang, so I may have a second go at the first edition of my 'Saviours of Sanctuary' sept, since Luna didn't quite make it...

I honestly struggled to finish the character, acts III-IV of Hell were done in really small blocks. It was nothing to do with the character (which is great fun), but rather that my mood has been so bad recently and I'm so irritable that I couldn't focus for more than 15-20 minutes before I just had to get up and do something else. I got into this routine of; 10 minutes reading for my literature review, 10 minutes D2, eat an apple, sit and stare at the wall for 30 minutes. I genuinely ran out of apples. I had to replace them with carrots and let me tell you, it just isn't the same. We got there though, so, here is Haematopoiesis :)

Guardian Kalan is guardian #16. He is the first completed character in my 'Saviours of Sanctuary' sept. He started off stabbing away with poison dagger, but the fun really began once poison nova became available. As you can see in the highlights, the addition of fire wall made for a wonderful partnership. The Trang set is of course quite fun given the shape change, but the resulting constant invisible merc bug became a big problem in late hell and nearly got Kalan killed a few times. Ultimately, the whole bug became too frustrating and I just stuck it on P1 and pushed to the end as it was completely killing the fun of the build to be honest.

Kalan did pick up a few nice finds, Um, Mal and a MA skiller. Next up is probably a blade fury sin, but I'm not 100% settled. It's definitely an assassin and almost certainly a MA assassin.

The Pain...

It almost seemed there would be no end. First, there were those "Ancients" that were meant to "test" him. Countless times they forced Lord back to the Sanctuary of Harrogath, but no, at this point, three wizened ghosts of times long gone would not defeat him! After Azreal bravely traded his life for that of Korlic's, Lord and his newly found clay tool, proceeded to play a game of chase with the two remaining Ancients. Luckily it seems there great number of years played in Lord's favor, they were easily distracted by the large clay golem that harassed them at every turn.

Sighing in relief and with new found hope and knowledge, Lord revived Azrael, and prepared for the fight ahead.

"You know this is the last leg of our journey, and it will be the hardest." Azrael chimed.

Annoyed Lord replied, "Of course I know, you don't take me for a fool now do you? I have prepared, studied, and learned many of the dark secrets of Death, and personally, I don't plan on venturing into that void before that foul beast of Terror bows on his knees before me! HE WILL BOW ON HIS KNEES!! DO YOU HEAR ME?! ON HIS KNEEEESSS!!!"

Ahh the Ancients, what a bunch of pricks. xD

So, I PREPARED! xD hahaha

Oh gosh, well, basically, I as soon as Azrael would die, I would escape to town, and that happened, oh, about 20 times, so meh. Then finally he stayed alive long enough for me to kill Korlic, which, is always the Ancient that scares me the most, so I took on Macdaw and Talic by myself with my Gumby.

And then finally, after a bit of run, cast gumby, shoot, they finally granted me passage.

And then, the progression to Baal was fairly easy, there were a few Gloams, but they were only Champions, and between Bone Spear, my Merc, and Gumby, they were in constant Block Lock! Yay! =D

Unfortunately, this was my first "AHH! OH CRAP!" moment hah xD

I didn't even think that they were Magic Immune! And I could only revive my mercenary 2 more times! Luckily, stuffing Super Healing Pots and Antidotes down his throat plus the occasional Corpse Explosion got the job done = )

So then, on came Baal. AHH!!! STRESSFUL!!!

He would always decide to pop out a clone whenever I got him into the perfect position! Luckily, halfway through the battle, I realized I could bonewall him and he would pretty much just stay in place and not teleport away! =D

(And when clones where made, I would just run into the corner until they disappeared =D)

And so then, about 10 minutes (The fight took at least 20 minutes) Baal blew his big demonic chunks on the flow and I was rewarded handsomely.

Yeah right. xD

Well, this character has been in my sig for a while now and I finished him off this morning before work. I have to say, a twinked Bonemancer >>>> most of Hell, seriously, this was almost as easy as the Hammerdin, just not quite as fast. However, compared to the Hammerdin, a Bonemancer is much more fun, Bone Spears flying around everywhere look pretty cool and if a nasty looking melee character is chasing you you can just spam Bone Walls all over the place blocking their path and make them sitting ducks.

I made a Bonemancer back on B.net a while ago, fully decked out minus skillers really, with Enigma, Shako, BK rings, Maras, CTA etc, and he didn't compare to this character, probably because I actually know what I am doing now and am relying on skill rather than 1337 itamz to get me through the game.

The game was rather uneventful throughout really, no exciting finds, no NDEs thanks to having 2 tanks, Bone Walls and an excellent Bone Armor. My best 'find' was a Grand Charm from the Sewers in Act 3 NM, which was the first GC that I found, rolled into a Fungal GC after 3 Pgems, couldn't have asked for a better result 😁

No monster really challenged me to be honest, had one scary moment in Hell when about to face Bonesaw in the Glacial Trail, about him were Fanatic Pit Vipers and Extra Fast Frenzytaurs. The Frenzytaurs munched through my merc and golem in about 0.5 seconds, which made me run all the way back to the Crystalline Passage with them close on my trail. After a quick regroup and a spamming on Bone Wall, the situation was easily dealt with 😃

Ancients were a piece of cake, the Thrower just got Bone Walled in, and with max block and Bone Armor the other two were easily tankable, and they rolled with excellent mods as well for a change so no rerolling needed.

Gloams weren't much of a problem either, thanks to keeping a Wisp Projector in my inventory, which I could replace my SoJ with when necessary.

Merc: Defiance using an insight Bill, Wormskull and the Skin of the Flayed One. Does it show that I'm starting to neglect my mercs? Seriously, though, he was always lagging behind and I didn't really need him anyway so I never bothered to mule him items in nightmare or hell. Starting to play like gohanman... :rolleyes:

Thoughts:
Well, overall I think he's okay. The set leaves a few things to be desired in the inevitable comparison to Tal's Set, namely Life and MF. Still, it's not bad for this build. Walking at run speed (and the extra 40% FRW of the armour) is neat and it gives a ton of resis and decent skills. FCR is obviously not an issue with PNova and the Firewall oskill was actually usefull in Hell to deal with Poison Immunes.

Generally this build is extremely safe, not due to the AI curses or the minions but simply because of the fast movespeed and the nature of poison nova. You can cast, move, cast and stuff is dead. Good stuff. Against immunes the golem is needed to root them for firewall but then they go down okay and once the first one is down CE takes out the trash.

He only had one real NDE, in the chaos sanctuary in Hell, when he got LR'd by a bosspack and champions of OKs. That was a bit more elemental damage than anticipated but 3 rejuvs in rapid succession saved his life, or maybe his undeath giving how he looks? At any rate he was still standing.

Ancients were laughable, didn't even check their mods. Just LR'd them and led them on a merry chase around the summit while casting Nova every once in a while. As easy as taking candy from three bearded old babies.

He's one lucky son of a ***** considering he has no MF at all. Some highlights:

Meat Shield the Act 2 Defiance Merc comes equipped with a Cryptic Axe Insight Stick of Putting the Hurt on, A Fortitude Archon Plate of 300% more Ouch and a Vampire Gaze of Leeching Life and Stuff. Okay, his name isn't actually Meat Shield but he doesn't respond to his real name any better so I call him that.

Ramblings:

Ah, everyone's favorite part, Nightfish rants about yet another guardian. So, what's to say here? The build is extremely straight forward, obviously. Pick a skill and max the synergies.

Damage output is okay but not great. Especially considering the high end gear I put on him. I mean, slvl 37 should rock the house. Seriously. But tbh I kill fastest when I just cast amp damage and CE after my merc puts something down.

On the plus side, he is extremely safe. I think I could die in real life and the necro would keep going. Okay, maybe not quite, but I can watch TV and eat while playing him. Bone spirit basically works like guided arrow and spear can also kill quite safely with a couple walls up.

Generally the prison and wall spells make the way through hell very safe, however they can also stall you at times when you block the entire passage and the walls stay up longer than the monsters. Somewhat annoying. Act Bosses are mostly a joke, though. I just swamped them in walls and spammed the Spirits. GG no re.

Ancients went down in a similar way. I trapped one behind bars and just tanked the other two while spamming the spirits. Luckily they had crappy mods like CE, Spectral Hit and the like. No curse, no FE, no nothing.

So, how does the build rate overall? Average, I gotta say. I think it's both slower and more boring (to me) than a Skelliemancer. Also a lot more gear dependant.

Oh yeah, best finds: Hellforges always sucked. Two good items along the way, though: Baranar's Star and Cranebeak. Not that I didn't have them, but I always enjoy finding higher level stuff.

I think that's about everything for this guy, not overly interesting but you gotta play the standard builds too.

Next up: Amazon tribute build for Thyiad for doing the webpage thingy. Going for Multishot and fire skills most likely.

Thoughts
Never played a necro without curses before and normally wouldn't. But if you want to get some half decent results out of the poison and the bone tree you gotta skip fancy stuff like golems and curses. No regrets here, though. Especially with nova it was a piece of cake to just dance around stuff and cast once every 2 seconds. Mostly one application of Pnova was enough too.

Due to the massive (-68%) poison resist I got from gear I didn't need lower resist either. A great way to save 7 skill points right there. All in all this was surprisingly safe to play, largely due to the shield, I guess. Usually I could just sit there and wait the poison out. This wouldn't have worked for pure bone, though. When I wanted to use those skills I did have to get my merc to tank or shoot – step back – shoot – step back – etc.

There were a few tight spots when it was really touch and go, getting the nova out before I got hit, or breaking into a full out retreat before it was too late. Not having teleport on what is essentially a sorceress requires some thinking ahead. Once, just once, the only thing that saved him was running back towards the merc and having the holy freeze kick in to slow the monsters just before they caught him. Most of the time, however, I regretted picking holy freeze. He survived the encounters other mercs would have survived as well and died in exactly those situations where I would have needed merc support.

Anyway, all in all I like this one better than my pure bone necro, but not quite as much as my summoners or iron golemmancer. Still, kill speed was quite fine, of course in part due to my great items, but even with a few items less he'd still be quite formidable. No real need to max more than one synergy, just like it was on my FC druid.

All in all this comes out at about damage reduced by 67, which is a lot better than you'd think.


Blessed Aim (yes, you read correctly, blessed aim) merc using Eth Honor Mancatcher, Delirium and a fortitude boneweave.

Thoughts
Well, as most pallies go, this one is summed up in one sentence: Run up to stuff, Zeal, the end. Maxing 2 elemental auras and synergies actually worked pretty well. Holy fire doesn't really do that much damage, but 1500 is pretty good. Holy shock is... well, we all know that one is pretty good.

Between the anti-undead bonus from gris caddy and the anti-demon bonus of LoH he also dealt a good deal of physical damage. Nothing spectacular, but good enough. Leechwise he didn't have much, a bit of life leech and no mana leech whatsoever. I didn't really need that, anyway, blue potions were quite sufficient.

The damage reduction part was quite nice, actually. I guess this was my most durable character ever. Oh, not the safest, not by a long shot, damage reduction cannot really replace crowd control, but when it came to taking hits he did pretty well. A lot better than my recent conc barb who had like 25k defence and 3k life. I guess the key thing here is to no stack up on DR too much, so that you don't cripple your build offensively, but just squeeze in what you can without sacrficing a lot of damage. I suppose that is why I will not likely use DR gear again. Baring this set, I cannot see myself managing that.

Anyway, this was probably my most fun paladin to date, largely due to the relaxed way of playing the DR allowed. Of course you are quite durable with life tap or high life leech as well, but it's not as dependable as this. Tap can fail to activate and leave you high and dry, leech doesn't even work at all vs a lot of things. DR kinda never fails you.

There wasn't really anything super hard or challenging. A couple times he got really swamped in monsters but good timing on potions, being hella durable and dealing decent damage always saw him through. It got really, really close one time when he got hit by charging undead in the WS K while cursed, that's about it. Once the merc went down he really, really starts slowing down, though. Ray Charles would have better odds of hitting something that this guy... The only reason he didn't cut off his own foot is that gris weapon is a blunt one...



Uhm yea, that's abou a wrap for these two. Neither found anything of note, but that's alright.

I'll probably get the last two done over the next few weeks, write a small summary for this entire thing and then I guess I'm done with d2 for good... again... Well, this time for real, though, because I am running out of things to do I didn't do yet... :badteeth:

NDE: Got somewhat swamped once in plains of despair by those hell spawns, with might aura, while cursed, and they packed a bigger punch than their size indicated.

Thoughts: Quite capable character, and safe enough even without max block. CtA helped here I think, although the short duration was a pita. I didn't like attract since I kept killing the target, but confuse is better than dim vision in most cases, and bone prison could take care of uniques.

Damage is only good for p1, but some better gear and especially skillers might help out on that front. Hireling damage was quite poor (600-900 on LCS, 11 fpa), but she stayed out of the way and supplied the vigor aura. I think I will respec to get max CE, and use him to farm cows for runeword bases.

Next character is a Windhammer fury druid.

Explanation:

1)Lower resist - just because only hard points invested in this skill are calculated, while speaking about breaking enemy Poison immunity, i needed maximum available ponts for this skill...Keep in mind, that when immunity is broken, things like -% enemy resist to poison ARE working...
From my experince, not many Poison immune monsters remained after using this skill, so it allowes me to effectivelly use my strongest spell agains them (Nova)

2)Skeleton mastery - i've been really dissapointed by skellies survibillity in Hell, when i played my untwincked Summonmancer, so Revives are much better option from my point of view...And only synergy for them is this skill...

Gameplay events, finds, thoughts:

This was very easy - i never played any Poison based character before, so i doubted his killing speed on the beginning, but he was extremelly fast and fun to play.Poison Nova is very strong skill (especially with so many + skills from gear), so it was real walk through the rose garden...I started always with casting Bone armor and Clay golem and for the most of the game it was enough for holding enemies far away from to be really dangerous...Really, he was so safe, that i need to use Full rejuv potion just once - when Talic in Hell used his whirl direcly against my necro...But still, i'm pretty sure that more then 400 hitpoins was remaining at the end of his whirl...Anyway i called to aid revives in tough arreas (including Arreat), they were very helpfull and personally i consider them as greatest meatshield in the game...

So there we have Guardian picture...

Poison immune - i really did not noticed them...Now seriously, not many of them were remaining after LR, rest of them killed by merc/revives/fire spells

As for finds - with MF around 0% i've been not expecting much, but reallity was worse then i thought...His best finds were Poison skiller in Act 5 NM and Ravenfrost in Act 5 Hell, i do not remember any other finds...

Introducing Guardian OneTrickSkunk, the "Trangomancer" (Magi / Fire Wall Necro). My 19th SP guardian, and my third necro. The first part of this post will be a guide for the build, for PvM, since I haven't really seen this in the necro forum... the second part is the typical Guardian stats and gear, for the curious.

A while back, I finally found the last piece of the Trang Oul's set, and began looking for a build that would make good use of it. But I didn't want to make a typical skellimancer (done that, boring) and I didn't want to try a P&B build (done that too). When I looked at various guides on the forums, I saw lots of "Trang's is great but you really should use Enigma noob blah blah blah" kinds of comments--and where Trang's was mentioned as viable gear, the fire skills were always mentioned as an afterthought, and not the center of a build.

Anyway, I did some thinking, and dug up a retired character I'd used in a Single Player Forum tournament called "The Obsession Tournament.-- In that tourney, you had to focus on a stat (mine was Dexterity), a skill (mine was skeletal mages), and the synergies for that skill. I abandoned the tournament in Act 2 NM because I just couldn't progress well enough... the tournament rules made it impossible to use Lower Resist, which made the mages fairly useless.

Outside of the bounds of that tourney, though, I found that I had a character who could easily be made viable. He already had maxed block (and would forever, with all the points I'd put into Dexterity), along with maxed Mages and SM. He only needed some better gear and some points into Lower Resist. Thus, the Trangomancer was born. I twinked him up, earned him a point in Lower Resist, and put a bunch of levels on him... and finally, at level 65, equipped the complete Trang's set.

From that point on, this character has devastated everything in his path quickly and easily, with nothing even remotely like a NDE (well, OK, one bad experience with some Dolls... but it wasn't *that* close). The combination of Lower Resist and the Trang's fire skills kills anything not FI quite swiftly... and LR will also remove the immunity of most fire immunes you run across in your travels. Your mages will do significant damage; they'll be assisted and kept safe by a crowd of normal skeletons, who will still be effective despite the lack of Amplify Damage (you *will* have a Might merc). In short, there's nothing that can stop you... but unlike a typical skellimancer, you get to PLAY THE GAME while your skeletons HELP (and not the other way around). This is an active character... you don't just watch the action. For those who get bored with a standard skellimancer, this build is for you.

SKILLS:
Raise Skeletal Mage: 20
Skeleton Mastery: 20
Raise Skeleton: 20 (max this after the Mage and Mastery)
Clay Golem: 1
Blood Golem: 1 (prerequisite for Revive)
Iron Golem: 1 (prerequisite for Revive)
Revive: 1 (1-point wonder, for the extra tanks)
Golem Mastery: 1
Summon Resist: 1
Lower Resists: 1+ as many extras as you like. This is your main curse.
1 point in all prerequisite curses (which will get you Amp and Decrepify, which will see some minor use against PI/FI monsters)
1 point in Teeth (prerequisite for CE)
1 point in Corpse Explosion

With these skills, the basic build is complete at level 67 (including 8 points from quest rewards in NM and Normal). All additional points can be used wherever you like. I recommend extra points in Lower Resists, and if you like, Corpse Explosion. You could also beef up your golem or revives, though. Whatever... you have points to spare.

STATS:

Strength: you need to have 91 strength to equip Trang Oul's Set (assuming you socket a Jewel of Freedom or Hel rune in the helm, which I recommend).

Dexterity: enough for maxed block, about 200ish in hell, depending on your character level. One great bonus of this set-up: Trang's makes you move so fast, you can hardly tell any difference between walking and running... so walk everywhere with maxed block!

Vitality: everything else.

Energy: nothing, nada, zip, zilch, zero.

GEAR:

This is a set-dependent build, so some of these pieces are required.

Armor: Trang-Oul's Scales. Requires 84 strength, and is available at level 49. Until then, use a Skin of the Vipermagi. Stick a socket in it with whatever suits your needs... I put a ptopaz in mine.

Helm: Trang-Oul's Guise. Requires 106 strength, which would be your worst str requirement... but stick a Jewel of Freedom in it, with a good second mod, and the requirement goes down to 90, which is closer to the belt. Available at level 65, your last piece of the set. Until then, use a good rare circlet or Peasant Crown.

Shield: Trang-Oul's Wing. Available at level 54. Until it's available, use a Sigon's shield or a Homunculus or whatever tickles your fancy. Once again, socket it with whatever you need... obviously, a pdiamond is a cheap and easy choice that will take pressure off of the rest of your gear, but if you have Heart of the Oak (see below), resists won't be necessary.

Belt: Trang-Oul's Girth. Available at level 62. Requires 91 strength, which is your worst Str requirement.

Gloves: Trang-Oul's Claws. Available at level 45.

Wearing the complete set will give you (along with less useful mods that I've left out):

What do we still need? A weapon, jewelry, and boots. You have four spots to play with. You want to pack as many "+ all skills" bonuses into those spots as possible, since they boost your fire skills and your skeletons... and you also need to max out your resistances and increase your life.

Weapon: Heart of the Oak is the best choice for the build, if you can afford it. It will bring you very close to maxed resistances, and give you +3 to *all* of your skills... and since the +3 will affect not only the attack skills themselves, but also Fire Mastery, the difference it makes in your damage is tremendous. If you don't have HotO, then the Arm of King Leoric is a good back-up choice... it won't help your fire skills, but it will give you slightly better mages and skeletons than HotO will. Either is a good choice. Until you can equip one or the other, Suicide Branch is a great choice.

Switch Weapon: The Call to Arms runeword is great, if you don't mind losing a couple mages and skeletons when you switch. The life and mana bonus is worth that annoyance, if you have a CtA to use. Otherwise, no switch is necessary for the build.

Amulet: Mara's Kaleidoscope is the best option here... the combination of Mara's + HotO will give you maxed resists in hell with the Trang's set (or darn close to maxed resists, at least). If you lack Mara's, then Telling of Beads is a great second option, with Highlord's Wrath (+1 skills and +35 lightning resist) a third. This is also a great spot for a rare with necro skills and resistances (though it won't help your fire skills at all).

Rings: Bul Katho's Wedding Bands are perfect for this build, with skills and life. SoJs are another good choice, but since I play HC, life > mana for me. You won't really need the extra mana anyway, and blue potions are easy to come by. If you don't have BKWBs or SoJs handy, then go with rares that fill your needs.

Boots: Only one set or unique boot will give you any bonuses to your skills at all: Marrowwalks. I tested Marrowwalks, and wasn't impressed with the difference they made in my skellies' damage or life. If you really do want the +2 to Skeleton Mastery, though, you'll need 125 strength... personally, I used Waterwalks for the extra maximum Fire Resistance and the big life bonus (and instead of packing on strength charms, I used those inventory spots for even more vita charms, and skillers). If you don't have HotO and/or Mara's, you will probably need this spot to help with your resists... a good rare can do wonders here.

In total, if you can swing the recommended set-up, you will have +5 to your necro skills, and an additional +7 to all skills... so +12 to your necro skills, and +7 to your fire skills. That brings your Fire Wall to slvl 20, with level 10 mastery... and your average damage with it will be about 2500, which will then be multiplied by Lower Resist. Let the barbecue begin! :cool: Your skeletons and mages will be at level 32... I had 35, with a boost from CtA and two Graverobber's GCs. At that level, they did great damage, and rarely died.


THE MERC

No substitute: get yourself an act 2 Might merc, to help your melee skeletons' damage. Nothing else compares in terms of usefulness. For your merc's gear, go with any of the standard choices... but make sure you avoid anything with a chance to cast a curse. You don't want CtC curses to trigger and override your Lower Resist.

GAMEPLAY

This character is a TON of fun. Until you can start equipping Trang's items, you're basically playing a summoner. Suffer through it. By the time you reach level 54, you'll be able to equip three Trang's items: the gloves, shield, and armor. This will give you Fire Wall (yes, you could get Fire Ball at level 49, but it eats too much mana for my liking, and does too little damage). Once you have Fire Wall, along with LR, things get much more interesting. By the time you reach NM Act 5, you should be able to equip the entire set, and you'll gain both Meteor and Fire Mastery. At this point, your killing power becomes completely absurd in NM, even in an 8-player game, and remains quite fast in Hell difficulty on lower players settings.
